kingkakaone: You spoke like someone in the oil industry. Thanks for the revelations. One thing I want to add is that the joint venture between the companies and the government is also an issue. Government neglected their own part and the companies are bearing all the costs of production to even exports costs. People also need to know that government has over 50% stake in all productions yet they are huffing around. Bros, This is not totally correct. In the old JV agreement, the IOCs are the operators. Costs relating to community relations and development is paid by the operator and in that money, 55-60% of it was contributed by the FG. Problem is that the Niger-Delta folks are not strategy and futuristic in their thinking. |

ePUNK: I have always said this since 2013 - all the IOC's will gradually leave operating in the creeks and onshore. Afterall some of these assets have been producing for more than 20-30 years. What is going on right now is that these IOC's are gradually going deep offshore and also in ultra deep waters (close to water around the JDZ with Sao Tome & Principe) and they can afford to operate from business-friendly environment like Lagos and Ogun state. Also if you must know Lagos is already building a FTZ just like Onne oil/gas FTZ which will in the future hosts all oil/gas materials activity in Nigeria.
Time's up for the Niger Delta I have related this to folks on NL in times past. As far back as 2009, Agip relocated their head office from PH to Abuja. Total that left Lagos and moved their HQ to PH, beat a tactical retreat, built a 14-floor building at Adetokunbo Ademola VI and another in Abuja. Prior to that, they moved their Finance group to Lagos. I said in the past that the trend is moving subtly and will climax soon. Save for not wanting to restate the myriads of experiences workers in the industry relate, Niger-Delta folks hardly learn. Are they not the ones "begging" Shell? Why are they not threatening? ND folks do not understand the basic principle of a safe environment's impact on business |

owopokiri: That line about "government having no business creating jobs" has been so abused in this country that we need to start stoning politicians who wantonly use that dodgy excuse to gloss over their responsibilities,(And this is coming from a person who has never worked for government no another person since youth service!) Why am i saying that? While it is true that Nigerian youths have been so mentally derailed to always wait for government jobs instead of starting something on their own, we have to ask ourselves, how did we get here?
The fact is that it is the job of the government to provide the citizens with the skills needed for them to be able to be competitive in a modern economy! Is the Nigerian government doing so? No! You cant claim to be doing so when what you have is a litany of wayward universities with mangled curriculum! You have to train the young ones to specifics and you have to draw up your curriculum in a way that skilled hands coming of the campuses can easily be meaningful to the society by having the necessary training to start off from areas within the society where their skills are badly needed. That helps make their jobs rewarding.. You don't do that by flooding everywhere with just lawyers and doctors, with sociologists and political scientists. We need more engineers in this country, more scientists, geologists, artists, and more importantly, more qualified artisans.
How many mechanics or carpenters, or masons have you met that acquired their skills in a 'skills acquisition center' where there are set standards and examinations to meet quality skills training in order to insure optimal output? But when that mechanic that learnt his thread by watching his old uncle messes up your car engine, you start to curse and hiss. BOTTOMLINE: The government failed the citizens by not identifying areas in the economy where we need more hands, then building more schools to skill citizens optimally to fill in those areas and providing cheap funds through dedicated bank loans for start up thereafter! Simple! Few things 1. You have made analysis that detracts the thrust of Fayemi's charge to the Youths. 2. You have made seemingly statements tending towards facts, yet you have not backed it up with stats or references. You don't do that by flooding everywhere with just lawyers and doctors, with sociologists and political scientists. We need more engineers in this country, more scientists, geologists, artists, and more importantly, more qualified artisans. Can you show from a credible reference that we truly have inadequate number of scientists, geologists and artists? I think you missed this by a mile. What I think you should rather address is the capability of these professionals to be employable. We churn out graduates in numbers, yet most of them can hardly make it to the interview stage, the little that gets employed are mostly lacking in requisite learnings to fit into a work environment 3. You are right with the skill acquisition/Development and training as needed for many of our current and would be artisans. This is an industry largely untapped. I think it is misplaced to expect government to solely develop this industry. In developed and developing countries, government simply plays the role of regulator. It is the private sector that runs this industry. We private sector guys needs to wake up before foreigners take this industry from us. I have a South African friend that is trying to license private institution to train artisan "engineers" and "technologists". The learning curriculum and contents are already digitally simulated........and it's something revolutionary. In few years time, foreigners will control that space like NIIT and HIITs are doing in IT Training |

kernel501: You are funny man, he was voted Africa's greatest scientist by New African for his work on supercomputer, not for having Phd, He won the 1989 Gordon Bell Prize, which is the“Nobel prize of supercomputing.” Growing up in Africa. Please stop this show of shame, he didn't tell you he's is a doctor, after all he lost the suit. It was only Sahara Reporters paddling rumors of rubbish, why didn't any of those bodies that awarded him withdraw them? Ethnic hatred has blinded many against facts.
Emeagwali is the only living scientist extolled at length by a United States president in a televised speech (August 26, 2000). Bill Clinton called him “one of the great minds of the Information Age” and "the Bill Gates of Africa."
Emegwali was described by CNN as “a father of the Internet” and profiled in the book "History of the Internet." Ok! Let's start deconstructing the lies which Emeagwali himself had abandoned, yet you carry on your head like harvested crops. First let me first point out factually incorrect statements 1. Gordon Bell's price is NOT the Nobel prize of Computing. Rather the Turing Award( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_Award) is. The Turing Award is generally recognized as the highest distinction in computer science[3][4] and the "Nobel Prize of computing".[5][6] . Emeagwali's name is not associated with the Turing Award. Let me also refer to some quotes to give you perspective 1. What are the facts? There are certain things that Emeagwali's name should never be associated with, among them being - 1) A claim to have won the "Nobel prize of (super)computing". (He never won the Turing award, universally accepted as the highest honor in computing). 2) A claim to have "fathered the internet". (No part of his work was ever used, even remotely, in the invention or development of the internet). 3) A claim to have acquired patents. (He has no patents in the USA or anywhere else in the world). It is these fundamental issues that have set him apart as a fraud, not the tooting of his horn, not the color of his underwear.
http://coding.derkeiler.com/Archive/General/comp.programming/2004-07/0699.html The Gordon Bell Prize is one of many smalltime prizes that people who use computers can win, and it is the basis for a lot of bogus or hyperinflated self-promotional claims that Emeagwali later made. The Jewsmedia, including CNN, picked up on Emeagwali's antics and gave them uncritical prestige. Suddenly, we were hearing that Emeagwali invented the idea of parallel processing. He did not. We heard that Emeagwali invented the supercomputer. He did not. We heard that he invented the Internet. He did not. We were invited to believe that Emeagwali's Gordon Bell Prize was some kind of major achievement, on a par with the Nobel Prize. It is no such thing. There are even pseudobiographical anecdotes about Emeagwali to be found online, many of them intended to convey the idea that Emeagwali is one of the most brilliant men ever to live, on a par with, say, Karl Friedrich Gauss. He is not.
It's all lies, mostly invented by Emeagwali and the Jews, and amplified by the Jewsmedia. I should have known better than to believe it. Well, I do know better now. Emeagwali has no Ph.D., having failed twice to convince the University of Michigan that he deserves one. He failed to convince a judge that he was the victim of racism in the matter of his being denied a Ph.D., so he wasn't even able to use the courts to force the University of Michigan to give him a doctorate, which probably means he fell far, far short of deserving one. https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080314154700AA1OBPC 2. The award he won has little to do with computing. He only used computing(parallel processing ) in simulating Oil reservoir models. Hear what Gordon Bell, the owner of the award had to say wrt to Emeagwali Gordon Bell, 76, a pioneer in high-performance and parallel computing for whom the prize won by Mr. Emeagwali is named, said the entry that earned the Nigerian scientist the award had nothing to do with the Internet.
“He was able to get time on the Connection Machine at the right time and run a large program of oil reservoir modeling,” Mr. Bell, a principal researcher with Microsoft Silicon Valley Research Group in San Francisco, said in an email to NEXT.
“The Internet is another thing. No evidence that he had anything to do with the Internet,” he said.
Mr. Bell, who provided the financial support for the annual Gordon Prize, is an influential fellow of the world’s two largest professional associations of computer experts – the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the Association for Computing Machinery.
But when asked whether he was aware of Mr. Emeagwali’s contribution to the evolution of the Internet, Mr. Bell said, “Not that any of my friends who worked on the Internet recall. His bio on Wikipedia is most interesting and in itself seems to be controversial,” he said, in reference to the Wikipedia article on the Nigerian scientist, which only stopped short of calling Mr. Emeagwali a liar. http://www.cbwlondon.org/the-lies-of-philip-emeagwali/ 3. A claim that he had many inventions and he is one of the greatest scientists is also utterly false and more of Emeagwali and his spin Doctors playing publicity stunts Although he is not known to have made any other contribution to science or invented anything since he won the Gordon Prize 20 years ago, Mr. Emeagwali travels around the world, giving speeches and portraying himself as one of the greatest scientists in the world.
Speaking during a visit to Switzerland in April 2009, Mr. Emeagwali said he was the first to program an hypercube “to solve a grand challenge defined as the 20 gold-ring problems in computing. That discovery, in part, inspired the reinvention of supercomputers as an Internet.”
He claimed that by his effort, he was able to set three world records and improve on Newton’s Second Law of Motion.
But of late, Americans and Nigerians alike have raised questions about the claims. Alan Karp, a principal scientist with Hewlett – Packard Laboratories, and one of the judges who selected the Nigerian scientist for the Gordon Bell prize in 1989, said Mr. Emeagwali’s claims were false and exaggerated.
In response to NEXT’s inquiries, Mr. Karp wrote, “To the best of my knowledge, the work he submitted for the Gordon Bell Prize had no influence on the Internet. The material he submitted for the Gordon Bell Prize did not address adjustments to Newton’s Laws.
“Many people programmed the Connection Machines, both the CM-1 and the CM-2 that Mr. Emeagwali programmed. To claim that sending emails programmed is misleading. The work Mr. Emeagwali submitted for the Gordon Bell Prize did not set a world record. In fact, another team produced better performance and better price performance that same year and was awarded the Gordon Bell Prize for performance.
“There were other hypercube machines in use before the CM-2, and others had programmed them to solve important problems. Today, a supercomputer is not a union of supercomputers communicating as an Internet. Individual supercomputers with proprietary internal networks do sometimes coordinate over the Internet, but the work Mr. Emeagwali submitted for the Gordon Bell Prize did not do this,” Mr. Karp said. 4. On his media packaging her this Because his claims had bounced around for long without any major challenge, many people around the world believe them as true, and Mr. Emeagwali enjoyed celebrity status. And from time to time, he adds new layers to what many scientists now believe to be a pack of lies. Even the many of people/bodies who lauded him and spoke in glowing terms have had to beat tactical retreat.....I believe we can conveniently summise that they discovered they had been misled 5. on CNN, Time up to Toyota Mr. Emeagwali’s Internet self-promotion has earned him a lot of attention. He branded himself so well that he became subjects of CNN, BBC, and TIME magazine articles and was able to get on United Nation’s list of former refugees who have achieved special status within a community due to their achievements. He is also widely celebrated in Nigeria and America, where he is a consistent feature of the Black History Month.
In February 2005, Ebony magazine ran a Toyota advertisement describing Mr. Emeagwali as one of the founders of the Internet and as having a PhD; whereas, he never earned a doctorate because the University of Michigan did not find his dissertation good enough.
Responding to a NEXT inquiry regarding why it misrepresented Mr. Emeagwali to the world, Toyota simply dissociated itself from the Nigerian scientist.
“Toyota has no connection to Mr. Emeagwali and is not responsible for his credentials. In addition, Toyota had no involvement with a Gordon Bell Prize.'” said Mike Michels, the company’s vice president, communications. 6. On Bill Clinton's statements, even the American government could not even own the statement, as such referred to it as Mr. Clinton's personal statement Mr. Emeagwali was also once described by former President Bill Clinton as one of the great minds of the information age.
The U.S State Department would not comment on why Mr. Clinton described the Nigerian scientist in that way. It simply directed inquiries to the former president himself. Mr. Clinton’s office is yet to respond to NEXT’s questions as at the time of this report. |

Business expansion and growth is usually inwardly engineered for sustainability purposes.Government should not be engaged in this kind business. Leave it for the micro finance bank and other financial institutions. Government should focus on infrastructure, initial capital investment required for various extractive minerals for export purposes. Construction of atleast one more refinery that has the capacity to refine aviation fuel and others. This petty way of sharing money is not sustainable and should be discontinued. Above all it may encourage inflation. I disagree with you 1. The petty traders are part of the value chain and they are not existing in isolation, hence the need to look into making their sector in enhancing the chain. 2. The government facilitated a season of bumper harvests at the end of 2016, yet based on our current capacity and set up, about 45% of some crops are wasted due to challenges of storage, distribution channels and buying capacity of the so-called petty traders. 3. Let's take Agric sector as an example, are we investing in production? the answer is yes. But even at that we run the risk of not deriving needed value if we increase production and the distribution and sales channels are not addressed 4. I like the fact that you raised the need to stimulate demand, yet I ask, how do you want to achieve this if you don't address peoples' capacity to increase current spending? 5. I also see lots of contradition in your analysis. You applaud stimulating small scale business with loans to yet you want "micro-finance banks" to do so..... First off, govt is not giving the loans directly, it is being handled by a more relevant agency - Bank of Industry. Secondly how do you want such intervention to be effective if they have to get loans from MFBs at high interest rates. What impact will that have on prices? 6. Govts do intervene in the commerce and business so as to keep the economy going. This is pretty standard in most emerging economies like ours 7. You need to understand that govt's role in managing the economy is not a one-size-fits-all. For example, govt has no business building one more refinery. Capital projects of such nature is what should be left to the private sector. Dangote is building the largest single-module refinery in the world and it's likely to come on stream 2018/2019. This refinery alone will accommodate Nigeria's current demand with more to spare, so why should govt waste effort. Govt's role in this context is facilitate the interactions of players in the value-chain. In summary, seeing this as "sharing money" is simply ignorant |

CaptPlanet: The country is in recession and there's no remedy in sight and you think handing money down non interest loans to petty traders will change that?
Do you think that will put food on the tables of hungry Nigerians? How many petty traders are you gonna give loans to?
The problem with "ppl like you" is that you dont see beyond your nose and party affiliation. Free yourself from such thought. Free myself from "such" tots and reason like you? Thanks but no thanks...... I can be that pedestrian.......... 1. "handing down" non interest loans to petty traders will increase their business volumes, they will be able to buy more and sell more thus increase their margins. Which will translate into more purchasing power for households 2. How many petty traders are you going to give? Any is better than none. But beyond your limited comprehension of the strategy, if you've heard of the term "financial inclusion", then you would have understood it better in terms of getting more of the unbanked in to the fray, increase in commerce-capacity for the small scale sectors. Much more facilitating better identification, data gathering and integration of petty traders into the value chain of products in circulation. Have you ever wondered how you can enhance the turn around time of goods from the farm to the table in homes, if you neglect the petty traders who are an important medium to getting these products to the end consume. Brazil for example have over 5 million registered category of home-traders (your equivalent of petty traders) who produce, repackage, distribute and/or sell products from their homes, many who do not even have shops but have been recognized as integral part of the economy........... So to put into perspective your not well thought-through question Do you think that will put food on the tables of hungry Nigerians? the answer is absolutely YES |
