The whole Iraq adventure (and all that accompanied it) remains a mistake,
No doubt about that. However, I highly doubt anyone in the English government is thinking about attacking Iran.

Afam:
@Mariory,

I am clear the people in US are not starving but that's because the US feeds on the sweat of other nations and they do not depend on aids from other nations, they arm twist other countries to do their bidding and that's wrong.
I am not going to discuss your opinions on the US. That's for another thread.

Afam:
Have you bothered to ask why US is heavily indebted (over $7trillion as at 2 years ago) and is seen as making progress whereas Nigeria just cleared a total debt of about $32 billion some months ago?

Have you checked to see if the US really pays for oil or just prints out the money while it gets oil for free?
The US paying it's debt which stands at over $8 trillion (64% of GDP) is not as straight foward as simply paying it off. There are risks associated with attempting to reduce the debt by paying it off. That much I know. Just look what happened to Japan's debt profile in the 1990s. However, I do not have nearly enough knowlegde in that area to make factual comments.

As far as paying for oil, I have no clue what you're going on about there.

Afam:
Maybe you failed to notice that Iraq or Saddam became a problem the moment he decided to sell crude oil in a currency other than the dollar?
Iraq and Saddam became a problem (not just to the US but to the entire Middle East) when he attacked Kuwait, threatned Saudi Arabia, and gassed Kurd villages. It is better to argue based on facts rather than on theories.

Afam:
Why isn't anyone answering the following question?

When did the people of Palestine begin to depend on aids to survive, before or after the creation of the state of Israel in 1948?
When they decided to form their own government and have an independent state. Before that the Arabs now called palestinians and the Land were ruled by empires. More recently, the Otamman and British empires respectively. The call for an independent palestie came about after the defeat of Egypt and Jordan by Israel in the Six Day War.

@Mariory,

Yes, the people of Palestine may not be happy because a syndicate have decided to withhold funds that was supposed to come to the government (since the criminal introduction of aids dependency) just as a lot of people in the US are not happy with the Bush administration for the many lies and increase in the state of insecurity the world over.
The people in the US are not starving because of Bush's religious ideaology. The two scenerios you compared don't even come close to each other. Basically, Hamas is willing to sacrifice the fragile Palestinian nation in an attempt to achieve the religious ideaology of a minority. And you support such a stance simply because it is directed against Israel and the West? or is it because you believe in the idea as well?

You are basing your jugdements on terrorism. What about Public transport safety? What about health care? What about road safety? what about food safety? What about about water (access to clean water) safety? what about emergency response that saves lives? What about violent crime that usually ends in fatalities? What about collapsing buildings in Nigeria? What about poor sanitation and living conditions in Nigeira? What about fire safety? What about communal clahses that claims tens -> hundreds -> thousands of lives in Nigeria? And ofcourse as seen in Kenya, Africa (and especially Nigeria which is now attracting a lot of investments) is not safe from terrorism. Nigeria got special mention from Osama Bin Ladin.

These are some some of the factors that make safety in Britain far exceed that of Nigeria.
Crime › Re: Britain Is Now 'Worse Than 20 Years Ago' by Mariory(m): 4:00pm On Sep 05, 2006
I think you'll find Britain is far safer than Nigeria. I'm not disputing that it may not be as safe as it was 20 years ago but, there is no comparison with Nigeria.

[sacarsm]Yes, the Israelis should sit down and negotiate on how they will pack their bags and become nomads.[/sacarsm]

http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_context=7&x_issue=11&x_article=1158
One of the central reasons for creating Hizbullah was to challenge the Zionist program in the region. Hizbullah still preserves this principle, and when an Egyptian journalist visited me after the liberation and asked me if the destruction of Israel and the liberation of Palestine and Jerusalem were Hizbullah's goal, I replied: "That is the principal objective of Hizbullah, and it is no less sacred than our [ultimate] goal. The generation that lived through the creation of this entity is still alive. This generation watches documentaries and reads documents that show that the land conquered was called Palestine, not Israel." We face an entity that conquered the land of another people, drove them out of their land, and committed horrendous massacres. As we see, this is an illegal state; it is a cancerous entity and the root of all the crises and wars and cannot be a factor in bringing about a true and just peace in this region. Therefore, we cannot acknowledge the existence of a state called Israel, not even far in the future, as some people have tried to suggest. Time does not cancel the legitimacy of the Palestinian claim. (Hasan Nasrallah, interview, Egyptian television, June 2, 2000).

Afam:
Hmm!!

@Mariory,

What constitutes the truth?

Well, if the title of this thread is wrong, maybe you need to start another so people can discuss based on the title you choose.
This thread was created to discuss the Israeli vs Hezbolla conflict. That is clear from the first post made by the thread creator. Therefore the title is wrong. The thread title by the way was changed by Seun and I don't know why he changed it.

Afam:
Round and round and round and round, nothing new, facts ignored, truths manufactured.

Where do you stand?

My stand since morning has been that Israel was over reacting and that war wasn't a solution.

Before you mislead anyone, Hezbollah wanted a prisoner exchange deal and never hinged any discussion to a particular person as you are wrongly trying to sell that one, tomorrow you will start talking about truth.
Where do I stand? I support the Israeli retaliation against terrorists who won't leave them alone in peace. The Israelis have already exchanged prisoners before after an hezbolla attack. Turns out that wasn't the solution either. So what's your solution? That they pack up and depart? Not going to happen. The Israelis have shown they will repay you for violence against them with interest. And Mr Hezbolla himself has seen this first hand and has taken note.

No facts have been ignored. No truths have been maufactured. The turth has been pointed out by displaying the facts. Analytical and Historical. Instead some folks on here prefer to argue on what appears to be "my friend said"

Afam:

Wrong! The leader of Hezbolla has openly said it before that he will kidnap Israeli soilders to trade for that particular man I spoke of. Hezbolla have also unsuccesfully tried twice to cross the border and kidnap Israeli soilders in the 6 years that Israel withdrew. One one occassion 3 Israeli soldiers were killed . On that occassion the Israeli's exchanged prisoners for the bodies of the 3 service men. Fat load of good that did them. This time, they had their thinking caps on.

I only called you clueless because you are. It's not to insult you. I was just stating a fact. The thread title is wrong as this is not an Israeli vs lebanon conflict. Again this has been pointed out clearly in the previous 35+pages. Yet you refuse to accept the truth.

Hezbolla does not represent Lebanon. This has been pointed out in length in the previous pages backed up by links with historical and current information. Yet you refuse to accept the truth.
@Mariory

The title of the topic is Israel vs Lebanon if you had not noticed especially as you have stressed Israel is not fighting Lebanon. Israel did not achieve its aims, which was to teach the Hizbollah a lesson they would never forget and put fear into their hearts and so therefore lost.
Even the leader of Hezbolla himself apologised and said if he knew what the Israeli reaction was going to be, he would not have ordered the kidnap of Israeli soilders. Yet you refuse to see the truth.
Meanwhile Hizbollah not only gained more support, they have now entered into negotiations for prisoner exchange, something they wanted in the first place. Israel is losing her PM thanks to their underestimation of the Hizbollah. Does that sound like a victory to you?
Where is the PM resigning? The negotiations do not include the prisoner Hezbolla actually wants, the Israeli's have insisted on that. Instaed the negotiations are centred around low risk individuals and bodies of dead hezbolla fighters. If you want to know who that prisoner is, get a clue and read up on it.

The UN resolution calls for the disarming of Hezbolla and the return of the soilders. Hezbolla is severly weakened to the extent that people in South Lebanon are openly speaking out against them. Israel currently occupies former Hezbolla strongholds and has refused to depart these areas until UN forces+Lebanese forces arrive to take them over. Hezbolla cannot do anything about this despite their rethoic as we can clearly see. Yet you refuse to accept the truth.

I sure hope you now understand why you are clueless. All that needs to be said has been said.

This has always been the case since the first war.

If Israel and Iran were to do battle, Tehran would literally become a desert. This is why Hezbolla exists. To wage a proxy war on Israel because Iran dare not comfront Israel directly.

The war in iraq is a different ball game entirely and is not relevant to this thread.

You have to have a grasp of military planning to understand. Most countries have contingency plans to deal with hostilities with unfriendly neighbours should war break out. This does not translate as an intention to attack. This is simply sound militery planning and has been used for years. If Isreal wanted to attack Lebanon it would have stacked up on bombs and would not have needed emergency supplies rushed over from America a couple of weeks into the fighting.

Conspiracy theories are fun for a while but, don't worry you'll outgrow this phase and come to accept the truth staring you in the face. Until that happens, I wouldn't travel to Islamic countires that are fundamentalist. You may have a rude awaking.

Majority of the people you will see supporting hezbolla are Shites. Majority of the other Lebanese oppose hezbolla. This has been the case before the war and it is the case now. Hezbolla is only active in places of concentrated shite population in Lebanon.

Your claim that hezbolla has gained more support from the people of lebanon is therefore flawed. On the other hand, we are starting to see people (at the moment, mostly non-shites) in Southern Lebanon (Hezbolla's power base) starting to speak out against hezbolla. This kind of critisism of hezbolla in Southern Lebanon used to be almost unheard of.
