Drop deep? What is a player like Joel Obi who starts for Torino doing there? If we are to excuse Onazi that he plays for Trabzonspor.

Experience is really overrated.

We need Ndidi back to starting line-up with Etebo(where pace is necessary) or Ogu make those two wey dey look for who go cover them go rest.
football is not about each player doing there own business, they all need to defend when they are on pressure. i sey see Ronaldo defending abi do we have any ronaldo in our team

The defensive midfielder's Primary role is to shield the defence and cover gaps created in the defence due to marking players. As soon as the defensive midfielder is not doing this, the team is in trouble, especially against technical sides that are Quick in finding gaps and exploiting it.

That midfield combo was not stellar in these games but it was still better than the Onazi - Joel combo we have seen recently.
nice observation, joel and onazi messed up but the whole team also did...are you sure is about our midfield 2, and why is no one pointing at mikel for the first half collapse.

His the captain, i was expecting a lot of verbal and body language in that first half, i was expecting alot not just play wise...i see other team captain shout on some players messing up.

I still believe the collapse in the first half was more mental and rohr second half talk did the magic.

Rohr and mikel need to talk more during the match

Benteke Dropped, Kompany, Januzaj Included As Belgium Name World Cup Squad
June 4, 2018 10:54 am

Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke has been dropped from Belgium’s 23-man squad released on Monday ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Benteke’s omission was reportedly due to injury. Romelu Lukaku’s younger brother Jordan was also excluded, along with Watford’s Christian Kabasele.

However, Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany was included in the squad despite going off with a suspected injury in Belgium’s friendly against Portugal a few days back.

Former Manchester United youngster Adnan Januzaj, who missed out on a place at Euro 2016 after a difficult season, is back in the squad and will play in his second World Cup.

Meanwhile, notable names like Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, Thomas Vermaelen, Jan Vertonghen, Dries Merten, Moussa Dembele and Maroune Fellaini made the final squad.
Belgium are in Group G at this summer’s World Cup and will face England, Tunisia and debutant Panama.

Germany Drop Sane, Name Ozil, Rudiger, Neuer, Kroos In World Cup Squad
June 4, 2018 11:53 am

World Cup champions Germany have released their 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia with Manchester City winger, Leroy Sane, the biggest omission.

Sane, 22, played a key role for Manchester City who won the English Premier League title and Carabao Cup.
He scored 14 goals and made 17 goals in al competitions for the Citizens.
He will, however, play no part for his country in Russia this summer after being cut from coach Joachim Low’s 27-man preliminary party.

Sane has failed to translate his club form to the national team, scoring no goal and getting only one assist in 12 appearances.
The three other players dropped are; Bernd Leno, Nils Petersen and Jonathan.
Sane Manchester City teammate, Ilkay Gundogan was however included in the team as well as regulars like Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira and Jerome Boateng

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer gets the nod despite his recent injury struggles, while Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus will get the chance to put his previous fitness issues behind him – with the 29-year-old having missed out on a successful World Cup campaign in 2014.
Germany are set to open their 2018 campaign against Mexico on June 17, before going on to face Sweden and South Korea in their other Group F fixtures.

THE FULL SQUAD

Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (PSG)

Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Mats Hummels (Bayern Munich), Niklas Sule (Bayern Munich), Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea), Matthias Ginter (Borussia Monchengladbach), Jonas Hector (Koln), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Marvin Plattenhardt (Hertha Berlin)

Midfielders: Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Sami Khedira (Juventus), Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City), Leon Goretzka (Schalke), Sebastian Rudy (Bayern Munich), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal), Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich), Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Draxler (PSG), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)

Forwards: Mario Gomez (Stuttgart), Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

No matter the situation in the Nigerian context officials think personal interest before National interest.

Rohr has been coaching in Africa for near a decade he understands how to navigate our politics. That means he will concede and compromise with his paymaster. This will enable him to carry out his job with limited contention.

I really can not see how you can justify players inclusion after performing poorly on the basis of returning from injury, not fit, etc

Football politics at play.

Believe me,if Rohr and Wenger had utilized Iwobi very well in midfield than wasting him on the wings,he would have been very much better in that role..
He still need to improve on two things though..
1) His shooting: I really don't get why he I'd afraid to take shots from d middle... there are times when playing for both arsenal and Nigeria he would find himself in a position good enough to shot, but he would rather pass.. He should work on that oo...

2) His defensive contribution.

I very much believe that playing him in d middle will go a long way in adding creativity to our midfield even with Mikel not in it..
our best midfield pairing now are

Ndidi - Ogu - Mikel
Ndidi - Mikel - Iwobi
Ndidi - Etebo - Mikel

any midfield combo without Onazi and Joel will do jare grin
iwobi was groomed by arsen wenger, you know nothing about him.

iwobi is like iniesta, in as much as they can play in the middle they can also play in the wing and drift in to play with the guy in the middle, even if you play them in the middle they will drift out wide with one two touches with the guy on the right and left.

his not been wasted by arsen, who was molded by him.

watch iniesta play and you will understand iwobi more

Note that I am not "we all"... And I definitely was never involved in any banter on Etebo performances that much. So I am not part of the "We all"...

Etebo had a good game in Uyo vs Algeria. Have you forgotten? In a deeper midfield role (CDM) Etebo is yet to put a foot wrong. This was a game Onazi also featured in, in a double pivot with Etebo. Etebo played his role very well... so very well in fact.. but Onazi's positional indiscipline came to the fore even in that game. It was his indiscipline that created the gap which Bentaleb exploited to rifle in that strike that beat Akpeyi hands down.

Etebo has only wobbled and fumbled when he is played as an AM. It is so obvious he is not cut out for that role in the SE. But as a box-to-box MF, A CDM (DM/CM) in a double pivot or so... he has always done very well. He can also play LM/LW if the need calls for it.

So yes, in the DM role, I repeat, Etebo right now is a safer bet than an Onazi.
blue music coming in for Etebo very soon we go still hear regea

Etebo plays the CM and DM position well against Algeria in Uyo, but Rohr wanted him as a back-up to Mikel that's why he played him as a 10 in subsequent matches.

Onazi is obviously refusing to shoulder the major responsibility for his shambolic outing so he is subtly resorting to the silly blame game. Truth is he was our worst player on the day and all his runnings were bloody meaningless. He should own up to his shortcomings and shut the f**k up. Can he do what Mikel does for the team? Can he even deliver like an Ndidi? Even an Etebo or Ogu trumps him now. Onazi should shut it and own up to his failings so that he can get better and show us he is still relevant to the Eagles. Nonsense.
Etebo trump onazi after just one match, shebi na thesame Etebo we all wan kill with mouth...the truth remain that the whole team had a bad game and mikel positioning should be corrected...there is not sacred cow.

mikel was to forward in that match even when we were having issues, was expecting him to come deeper and settle the game with some passes but rather he was even ahead of Ighalo.

After some bits of good research i have come to conclude that the best option we have going foward in a 3-5-2 formation is pairing Simi and Musa. Moses should never be played as a foward if we truly want to maximize what we have in him. Ogu is a better as a midfielder, but looking at what happens to our defense when under preasure, his composure, grit, positioning and an uncanny ability to read games will stabilize the defense and bring about a smooth transition from defense to midfield without us having to lose ball possession. Ogu should be part of our 3 man defense, but i prefer him as a midfielder.
ogu can't start ahead of Omerou in 3 man defence....Ogu is a midfielder, him playing there that day was tactical, we have very good defenders

Sir how is your stake on Shehu now, remember how i rate Shehu but am more convinced that Ebuehi is better.

Also on Joel performance so far, with four solid friendlies the guy was damn too poor, making the team tells me sentiment

Onazi Ogenyi is out of shape. After England match i need to reevaluate my stance on him,not good enough for this WC,hope to see Ndidi back in action.
Aina was to displace Echiejile and he didn't, Echiejile already lost his spot as the starter, Aina could not convince Rohr...remember after Aina debut he played more games that Echiejile and nothing come out.

Colin udoh- The fickle nature of Nigeria football fans. You’re like kids, always looking to discard the old toy once a shiny new one pops into view.
And always so comically predictable.
Each time the cadet teams (U17, U20) Do well at the world stage, the immediate refrain is, yup, you guessed it “keep them together”. As if it’s possible for a national federation to keep and maintain players like a clubside.

When national team players have a bad day at work (like Onazi Ogenyi Eddy and Joel Obi at Wembley), they are instantly declared “finished” and a posse of new names trotted out in their stead as the savior.

The same Onazi that was once hailed by these same folks as the savior. Yes, I remember when NIGERIA failed to qualify for the 2012 Nations Cup, these people savaged the entire team, and the coach for not calling up Onazi, stopping just short of saying he could not only qualify for the Nations Cup all by himself, but could possibly win the whole damn thing too, then bring the trophy home by walking on water!

Today, the same Player has become their villain of the piece. Joel was hailed as the next best thing since sliced bread. There were even whispers of how he could bench everyone in that midfield, including Mikel kpakpa. Today, he should not go to the World Cup.

Now there’s a shiny new toy to sink those grubby fingers into. His name? Kelechi Nwakali.

Just like Onazi in 2011, Nwakali has barely two seasons of senior club football under his belt, but after watching him in one excellent game, against an arguably jaded team, folks want him to take over the world.

Deja vu anyone?

All of a sudden Gernot Rohr, who has watched the player over and over again, has tapes of him, and even invited him to come play the game where our Royal Ficklenesses saw him, does not know enough to leave the Player out of a WC squad he thinks neither Nwakali is ready for.

But all of our Royal Ficklenesses, majority of whom have never been 100 feet of the Nwakalis, feel they know more and better than a man who put them in that spotlight in the first place!

Yes, Onazi had a bad game. Yes, Joel had a bad game. And yes, both deserved to be subbed and need to work extra hard to prove themselves again.

But that knee-jerk reaction of throwing them under the bus, is just not the right way to go. Not any more.

Nigerian football fans must learn to be wiser and think a little deeper than just skin deep.

Players will have bad games. Including the shiny new Nwakalis. Feel free to criticize them. On the basis of that bad performance and let them know they have to improve. But don’t be too quick to cast players away.

We must learn to get behind the players when they fall down and support them to get back up.

They will give you more and lay down more in good times when they see you have their backs in bad times.

O pari

Aina primarily is a RB to have a level playing field he should be tried in his preferred position. However, that not withstanding did he get a fair chancehuh

How many minutes of SE playing time did he actually get.

Finally, how on earth can we be taking a player who has started to decline so badly that he failed in lowly Turkey went to Belguim and started playing 2nd division in Belgium and not even first choice. Finally this player has lost pace he is now a liability. That player was taken ahead of Aina.

Controversial opinion, but honestly speaking Aina doesn't look to me a solid player. Even while he played LB, he never made daring runs that suggests he has it in him to offer something extra. He made a dogs dinner out of the chances given to him.
After the the world cup, he has a big fight to claim either of the fullback roles in the team because certainly, Usman Mohammed will come back to fight out the RB spot with Ebuehi.
The confidence of the team managers to hand him the captains band against Athletico and the yoe man's job he did in that game suggests to me that he is the guy Ebuehi will contend with. I dont care how anyone feels about it but Aina doesnt hold a candle light to Usman Mohammed, expect of course we want to be economic with the truth and common sense flies out of the window because Aina is London born.
