Nigeria can't work with the present structure. Unleash the potentials of the federating units by giving them more autonomy and Nigeria will blossom. |
A group of Igbo organisations in the Diaspora and at home comprising Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF), Global Igbo Alliance (GIA), World Igbo Congress (WIC), and Igbo caucus of the Lower Niger Congress (LNC) have called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to organise a referendum for the Igbo people to determine their future in Nigeria. In a joint statement signed by ADF president, Prof. Uzodinma Nwala; GIA president, Dr. Christian Duru; WIC chairman, Prof. Anthony Ejiofor; and the Secretary-General, LNC, Tony Nnadi and made available to the Daily Sun, the Igbo organisations want their demand of a referendum to be implemented by the end of December this year. According to the group, a time comes when the people shall arise to take their destiny in their hands, adding that the new age consciousness sweeping across Alaigbo presently is a pointer that Ndigbo have had enough of the despair in Nigeria and may wish to opt out of the union. “We strongly and unequivocally affirm that Igbo people have a right to self-determination as clearly enshrined in Article 1 (2) of the United Nations Charter (1945), as well as in Article 3, 4 and 5 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (2007). The right to self-determination is also enshrined in article 20 of the African Charter on Human & People’s Rights, which Nigeria ratified and domesticated as a law of Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004 (Ratification & Enforcement Act) Cap 9 article 20 (1), which provides that ‘all peoples shall have right to existence. They shall have the unquestionable and inalienable right to self-determination. They shall freely determine their political status and shall pursue their economic and social development according to the policy they have freely chosen.’ “It is the inalienable right of Ndigbo to freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development; a position that confirms that the right of the Igbo to self-determination is sacrosanct and cannot be denied or taken away. “The call for outright independence or restructuring along the line of regional autonomy has been intense in Alaigbo in the last 12 months. With no clear evidence of where the majority stands on the issue, the Global Igbo Alliance (GIA) undertook an online opinion poll to obtain some level of statistical evidence on the subject,” the group said, adding that their latest position was informed by the result of the poll. www.sunnewsonline.com/groups-demand-referendum-on-igbo-future/ |
Very funny. Noticed also bubu is working hard to appear lively and agile these days. It showed during his meeting with Theresa May. The 'Lifeless' comment really got to him. |
Buhari's own visionless and unproductive leadership is already shaking him. A little nudge from a worthy candidate and the whole administration tumbles over. |
Such a cutie. Confused people mocked this girl dat time. |
We made it unforgettable by going home in the first round? Just acknowledge us for making up the numbers and move on. |

A group, Igbo Ekunie Initiative, which prides itself as a coalition of professionals from Igboland in Nigeria and the Diaspora, has called for the immediate release of some women arrested by policemen in Imo State last week for protesting against the continued disappearance of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB. The group, in a press statement made available to DAILY POST in Awka and signed by the duo of its president and secretary, Messrs Tochukwu Ezeoke and Lawrence Nwobu, said the women did not act beyond their rights, and as such should not have been arrested for any reason. They described the arrest of the women as cowardly, primitive and illegal, saying the innocent and unarmed women were within their rights under the Nigerian constitution, to engage in a peaceful demonstration and protest over the continued disappearance of Nnamdi Kanu. Part of the release reads, “We strongly and unequivocally condemn the arrest and detention of these women by the Nigerian security forces in Owerri led by the Imo State commissioner of Police, Dasuki and hereby call for their immediate and unconditional release. “We are supposed to be in a practicing democracy and we cannot understand why the magistrate Mrs S.K. Durumba before whom the arrested women were charged in Owerri would refuse to discharge and acquit the women or at least grant them bail as prescribed under the law especially as she made it clear in her ruling that her court had no jurisdiction to entertain the suit brought before her.” The group further described the arrest as “The brazen parochialism of the Nigerian security forces”, who it said were ever eager to arrest and detain innocent people from the South-East part of Nigeria but allegedly opt to protect, aid and abet terrorist herdsmen from the Northern part of the country. It said the arrest by security forces was not only a fundamental breach of constitutional responsibility but also capable of igniting an existential crisis of unfathomable consequences in an already fragile nation under the current APC administration. “We find it strange that an organization that goes to sleep when hundreds and even thousands are massacred across Nigeria by Fulani herdsmen can hurriedly embark on arresting and assaulting harmless and unarmed Igbo mothers that are protesting peacefully in Owerri, Imo state. “We are persuaded to believe that the Nigerian security organizations comprising of the Police and the Armed forces have become sectarian organizations that serve the interests of the feudal Fulani in Buhari’s historically sectional administration,” the group said. www.dailypost.ng/2018/08/22/igbo-group-demands-immediate-release-ipob-women-arrested-imo/ |
