So what's up with Gift cards? 99% of all the gift cards you have been buying and that we have been selling come from scams in the US. There are many different types but all na scam. One popular one is loan scams where scammers call people to advertise loans to them but tell them they will pay say $500 or $1000 etc in gift cards. It applies to so many many scam cases, so many on craiglist, you'll see items there are ridiculous prices and buyer will say you can only pay in gift card and he will ship to you. The real buyers of these scams go ahead, head to stores to purchase them, snap the pictures and send the cash receipt to scammer and GBAM, within 5 - 1 hr that card has walked down through
a chain of many sources eventually bought and redeemed by anyone. Another major source is money laundering. in 2017 alone, more than $12 Billion dollars was laundered from the US with gift cards. Drug sellers mostly get paid in cash and use gift cards to remit founds abroad, they have a network of people who use these stack of cash to purchange itunes, amazon, walmart, ebay, bestbuy etc gift cards, they sell them off at half price in bitcoin and send bitcoin to cartels across the boarder. All these cards end up eventually in our hands and many other places, but trust me Nigeria has become one of the major destinations lately. I can go on and on, but you should know that nobody in his right senses will take a $500 cash of his hard earned money into a Walgreens store, buy a gift card with it and sell it same day at half price. Infact many of the gift cards and sold for less than half the face value, after going through a change of 3-5 people who have all taken their profit, you are still able to buy at N250-270/$, in naira-dollar value original pushers of these cards mostly sell at say N120-150, way less than 50%. In some cases those who have been scammed go and report the cards and sites like amazon go ahead to lock, withdraw or block account that redeemed it. In many cases they just move on.

Amazon for example is well aware of these realities and lately have stepped up effort to at least reduce it. It's difficult for them because alot of real customers still use gift cards. Because they have a wealth of experience over time, they system has also been "trained" to detect irregular customer activities especially with gift card as payment method. There is a certain "behaviour" for an average american customer's account activity. The Amazon system raises flags occasionally when strange activity is detected. It is not everytime you receive an email from amazon saying you have used invalid gift card, does it mean you actually used invalid gift card, the system just feels, something needs to be checked.

Now I know why a guy I have purchased gift cards from for years stopped selling all of a sudden as he said something about gift cards dropping and people messing up the system; at least for many years that I have purchased and used his card I never had any issue so I can say he sells genuine cards though at a very high price.

I still believe some cards are purchased genuinely, some cards are given to people as gift but when they do not want to buy anything on amazon then they sell it off. Another group are amazon affiliate as their payments are made in amazon gift cards, and definitely they will sell it at a cheaper rate to get their money. Another group are the one that sends money home and their cheapest and fastest way of doing it is via the use of gift card.
I had met a direct seller of a gift card on a website like that and what the guy does is selling gift cards to like 1000 people in a day but he ends up shipping the cards to like only 50-100 buyers after he has used their money to run another business and perhaps made a lot of profit. That his profit would be shared among him and the 100 buyers while the rest gets their complete money back after a month or 2 months as he made sure his delivery time is pegged as 1-2months so you won't be able to cancel the transaction until after the delivery time had passed.
So in a nutshell, in as much as your explanation is true and might help others to decide and just like singapore1 has said, there are still people selling genuine gift card at a discount rate. I think I would have to stick to some old sellers I trust till I also confirm their cards are also fraudulently acquired make person no give me wetin go choke me Abeg.

some scammers in the USA sell amazon gift card then go back to the store to claim refund, the store will alert amazon and flag the card, making the card invalid , so if you load or buy that type of card, your account get locked ...

don't let us forget that there is no amazon store or itunes store here in Nigeria , all USA amazon cards are from usa and usa only..so any amazon card you see is indirectly from usa from a 3rd party

Yes, I know we don't have amazon cards in Nigeria and that the cards are from third party, I also know that gift cards are gotten in many ways. It is as a result of that I always ask questions before buying but seeing khassy boldly saying that got me saying if there is no genuine cards any longer.
