Culture / Culture Specific Words In Nigerian English by mayblossom(f): 10:11am On Feb 28, 2018
Hello fellow Nairalanders. I am currently carrying out a study on intercultural pragmatics and I need your help.

I need some culture specific "English" words that we use in Nigeria, those words we made up and use to express concepts with no English equivalent (just because the concept it expresses does not exist in the English culture) e.g. co-wife, drinking hot water(the post-natal sense of it), Jellof, new yam, etc.

Please help a sister.

Thank you

Hello everyone,
I've started getting my documents together for legalisation.
Please how do I get the CTC of my BSc certificate from my school, nobody seems to know what that is... Can my HOD sign the photocopy of my certificate?. Also, has anybody done the PCC recently?, how much did it cost?.
Please help a sister, its really urgent.

CTC should be done at the office of the registrar. It should be on a photocopy of your cert.

Hi all. Thanks for all the info. I have one more question though. I have an appointment to legalize my documents but I'm currently not in the country. Can my sister submit the documents for me? I read from the appointment letter that only legal representatives duly accredited can submit documents on behalf of anybody. Does my sister qualify if she Provides her id or do they mean I should get a lawyer?

Also the ministry of edu refused to legalize my transcript. They said it's a confidential doc and they won't legalize (I applied for a student's copy but it still bears the name of the school where they sent the original)

objifeanyi:

Hiya @mayblossom..
As per CTC yes you will have to do that in your school you can send a photocopy, however these requirements were stipulated by the embassy for us who want to leave Nigeria for Spain (for studies)... Your case is quite new but at the same time very interesting because you already live in Spain and want to study further in the same country... do you need all of these documentation as though you are applying from Nigeria... Please help us understand better

Thanks for your response. The school actually knows I live here. I called them to ask for the requirements for securing admission into the university for a masters degree programme. They told me to get my transcript and my certificate, both legalised at their embassy in my country(I guess to confirm it's not fake). I know I'll need a certified true copy of my certificate because they said they'd only need to sight my original while I leave the photocopy behind for them. They also asked for a letter that guarantees that my degree gives me access to do a masters degree in my country(Maybe to confirm it's actually a university degree because I know that with OND or HND one needs a PG before Masters)

Hey guys! Thank you all for the generosity with info, and God bless you 1andonly for starting this thread. I have read from pages 1 to the last and I'm quite enlightened. I have a few questions though.

1. I live in Spain with my family and want to start the legalisation process for masters in a university here. Please tell me someone can do this on my behalf. And if yes, how do they do the investigation (the lawyer part). A lawyer came to my house when I was applying for family reunion visa.

2. I read on here that my uni has to stamp ctc on each page of my transcript. Can someone pls confirm this.

3. My target school here also requested that letter confirming ti them that my certificate grants me access to do a masters degree in Nigeria. I've asked my school to raise the letter, although they told me they've never heard of this. I read here that it's to be done at the ministry of education. Please how do I apply for this and what is it called officially?

4. Can I submit my English documents for legalisation and translate later when I have my documents with me here in Spain since I'm not applying for a visa, or do they need the translations too for legalisation?

Please help sister. Thanks a lot guys and congrats to the ones who have scaled this hurdle. I'm familiar with the Spanish embassy protocol bruhaha as they showed me nwii when I was applying for my family reunion visa.
Culture / Re: Isi Agu As A Uniform - Your Opinion Needed by mayblossom(f): 2:37pm On Jun 14, 2016
ChinenyeN:
It is simply a matter of convention that Isiagu is not commonly worn by women (it doesn't mean you won't see it happen). There is nothing "cultural" about it other than that. If the women decide to have an Isiagu-styled attire (like a wrapper and head tie), then I don't see the problem. Even if they don't stylize it, and they keep Isiagu as is and wear it, I don't see the problem.

Thank you for your input. I just learned something new too.

You see eh, it's wrong for umu nwanyi Igbo to even conceive that. How can ishi agu of all things be worn by women?

I respect our women but mbanu...
They should go for other wrapper minus Ishi agu ndi nna.

You got some part of the info wrong. The women did not do the "concieving". The group in question is male dominated (but also has female members) hence the decision to use isi agu as uniform(men and women alike).
Culture / Isi Agu As A Uniform - Your Opinion Needed by mayblossom(f): 9:07pm On Jun 13, 2016
So a friend told me how their group, an Igbo association abroad wants to get a uniform and decided on the popular isi agu. This group has both male and female members and because the isi agu fabric is not commonly used by women, the decision is sort of controversial, especially among the women.

I decided to post this here to know how other Igbo people feel about it. The style for the women has not been decided because of this controversy. It could be tied as double wrapper or used to make long skirt, but whatever the style, the top will be a different material (lace)

Pls let's know your honest opinion. Thank you.

“Aside that, the CCTV 3 captured some dust-like smoke coming out of the collapsed building.”Further lending weight to his claim, Agoyi referred the coroner to the oral account of one of the 34 survivors that he said were interviewed in the course of his intelligent findings.“

The panel also interviewed one Taiwo Temitayo Taiwo, aged 28 years, one of the surviving victims of the collapsed building and I quote, ‘Immediately the building was coming down, what I saw or heard was like a thunderous lightning accompanied with a sound, hitting the wall as if someone was using a saw to cut an iron, then the house collapsed,'” Agoyi submitted.

So ordinarily, when it is not controlled demolition, the building should fall one piece a day, without a sound and no appearance of dust? Hmm...which school this pólice man go sef?

100 million naira target !!!!! Haba I don't believe this

Bros better believe it. My target was 150m for current accounts, 130m for savings account and 150m for fixed deposits, and I was told this was just because I was new in marketing, having spent abt 3 years in operations. I just look them finish, stayed for a few more months and left them. Honestly, now, I sleep better. As per your question whether this targe is monthly or yearly, it's what you're expected to have in your books(cCABAL) at every point in time. They take your achieved amount every morning(the amount you have in your cabal) and then do the math to get your average achieved for each month. Your promotion, even survival depends on that monthly average as against your target.

@ op The targets are one thing, the thought of going to work, getting into another meeting and being addressed as a looser is another thing all together. Such meetings leaves one very vulnerable, with a very low self esteem. Pray, tell me, how can one mobilize funds or even be courageous enough to get into serious business talks with his/her clients in such a bad mood? That is what gives the clients the guts to ask for so so and so. Even some staff offer the thing sef before the client thinks of asking. And CBN is still using moral suation? TALKATIVES! CBN stop placing unnecessary targets on the Banks, set a standard and sanction the offenders. JUST STOP SPEAKING TOO MUCH ENGLISH!

Hello Mamas, Pls my legs are really hurting nowadays (from the upper part of the thigh down, its sometimes right and sometimes left) . Sometimes, it hurts so much that i will not be able to move it for like 30mins or more.

This didn't happen with my first. What do i do?
Sorry dear. I think it's normal. From your explanation, I guess you're far gone, like really heavy, so a lot of weight on the poor legs, more blood circulation, more wáter retained in the body, plus your body and joints are now looser from the first pregnancy(you no tight again na, no more sisi things) so it's kinda normal. And remember, every pregnancy is different so don't use one as a yardstick. Try not to walk immediately you get up from a seat or bed. Stand a bit to regain your balance before you step out. Do you see where I'm coming from? It's all about perspective. So I'd say, instead of feeling abandoned(by your biological mum), why don't you start feeling chosen with love(by your adopted family)

You're supposed to register for antenatal as son as you realize you're preggers. Infact, the truth is that you're supposed to start taking folic acid BEFORE you try for a baby. Anyways, just register asap cos the basic measurements they get now from you (your weight, bp, etc) is what they will use to compare and monitor your progress eg weight gain, rise and fall in bp,etc throughout the pregnancy, and the longer you wait, the more those basic pre~pregnancy statistics change. Besides, you need to start taking prenatal meds to prevent birth defects like neural tube defect and othe dangerous defects. You babies important organs and body parts are forming now...brain, spinal cord, etc

hello pushin mamas. 7wks pregnant. always hungry o.no matter wat i eat, hunga go catch me .its worse wen i jst wake up frm slwep.abeg is dis normal.my fear is if i dont eat, pickin for belle go starve but if i chop,i go too fat and baby sef go too big

It's very normal. Just eat healthy. A pregnant woman is expected to take extra 300 calories till she puts to bed. There's a reason for that. Your baby needs it to develop well. Also don't be afraid of making a fat baby just yet, they start adding serious weight in the 3rd trimester-7th,8th and 9th month. As for you getting fat, if you eat healthy and keep being active-like 30mins walk daily, you won't add soo much. btw, would you rather sacrifice a lifelong of goodies, including good health and intelligence fr your baby on the alter of being a sexy mum forever.

Instead of 3 heavy meals, take 4 or 5 small meals, it helps to keep you filled and energized throughout the day and keeps heartburn away. Take your meds religiously, you'll see the results by June 2015. have a smooth 9 months.

NICE WORK BY THE NIGERIA CUSTOMS.
I think the meat should have been tested and if it tests positive for Ebola, then an intensive investigation should be conducted to find out who they are that are bent on bringing in Ebola into Nigeria. If Sawyer(whose actions at the hospital were very suspicious) failed them, or at least didn´t have the amount of success expected, and their monkeys have been intercepted, they could try other means...that is if their is a "THEY".

But monkey meat again...nama don finish?

Nice thread! And timely too. So I´m just a beginner still trying to learn music theory cos I want to be good, very good ie play by ear and also play sheet music and accompany songs as well. I´ve always been able to play any song I can sing(with just my right hand and paying no attention to finger rules). Now I´ve decided to harness this natural talent.
The closest I´ve come to studying music is in secondary school and I was pretty good. I am encouraged by all your posts here(a little intimidated too) and now that I see all you guys do, I´m even more determined to grow.
Like I said, I´m currently studying music theory, from the BASIC. Now I´m trying to get familiar with note duration, time signatures, dots and ties, rest, accidentals. I read on my own from the internet and like someone suggested at the beginning of the thread, I´ve got a friend to guide me once in a week, and now I´ve got you guys too.
Now you have an idea of my level and abilities. please give me tips on what more I need to do, things that helped you as a beginner, etc
I´ll update the house on my progress and will ask questions about what confuses me as I go. please make una dey attend to my small people´s questions o.
Thanks Dramadiddy for all the links. I´ll start reading them right away. And thanks everyone for your contributions, I read this thread from page 1 to last. you all are good. Peace!

Food / Re: The Secret Of Losing The Sour Taste In The Tomato Stew by mayblossom(f): 6:51pm On Jul 31, 2014
chymystique: IMO, the best way is to fry the tomatoes esp the canned paste very well.. It works for me

Exactly!! Fry the tomato well well until it´s done. How do you know you´ve fried it enough? Lift some quantity with your frying spoon. You´ll notice that even in the spoon, the tomato will continue frying (showing heat bubbles) for a few seconds before it stops. Then you´re good to go. Go ahead and add your meat stock and enjoy your tasty stew.My grandma taught me this, so it has been working since like forever. But the ish is that you can´t leave the kitchen o. You have to stay there and continue stirring the tomato while frying to avoid getting burnt and turning black or darker than you like. It takes time and requires patience.

One secret though...you can reduce the water content by boiling the tomato immediately after blending it. When it gets very thick and almost without water(same thickness as tin tomato), then you can start frying. The boiling reduces frying time, thereby reducing the time you get to spend in the kitchen cos while boiling, you don´t need to stir it, just monitor with your eyes.
