As far as the law is concerned he is yet innocent until a judgment has been passed. They are using 'opinion of friends' and bias to punish, blackmail and deny him basic human rights. No one should stand in the way of Nigerian laws.

As a Registrar (not even Snr. Registrar) I could do do 80 percent of what my Consultant did. In our days most Snr Regs had passed their part 2 and were just waiting for vacancies to become consultants at the teaching hospital but everything has changed.

The Police again today! I said it the fish rots from the head. The honourable wayout would have been to get her retired and thereafter go all the way with her. The inherent dangers are many. She could get promoted beyond her level of competence. Being so near to the IG she could influence decisions she hardly understands. But there is a way out for all who want police reformation. We must continue to shout and expose them until something gives in.

A lot of difference! The Police is worse. Look at the case in question. The Police refused to take the so called child traffickers before the law preferring to release them after extorting huge amount from them. That means two thing-
1. The police knew they were innocent and would be released under the law, possibly with a civil suit against the police.
2. The Policemen were actually looking for money and not traffickers or other criminals. By extension this is dangerous because you can kidnap take even the President of Nigeria and take him past police checkpoints provided uou have ENOUGH TO PAY THE POLICE. We have seen prominent people kidnapped and wondered how they got past numerous police checkpoints. This could be the answer. LET US AS NIGERIANS SPEAK OUT AGAINST THIS WITH ONE VOICE.

My fear now is that recruiting more policemen when a reform has not been done will worsen an already bad situation. Yesterday I posted a comment about Policemen who collected 75,000 from an old couple at Akabo Imo State who were going to vaccinate their grand child on accusations that they were traffickers. The couple requested to take them to the mother of the child, they refused. They asked to be taken to Police Station where they can be heard, the police refused. The police refused them even making calls and kept the old man (a retired surgeon), his wife and grandchild of less than one month age in the blazing sun sun for 6 hours with no food or water, until they got the 75,000 the wanted. We hear the child died early this morning. When the people burn Police stations, dont blame them much.

When Nigerians describe the Police as the worst in the world, it is because there is no better word left in lexicon to describe them. Who has not been a victim? I have suffered many times. A friend suffered to such an extent that he no longer offers my services to them and their families, and he is calling on other professional friends to do the same. Check points and Police stations have become law courts where cases are decided, and punishments of fines, detention for months and even summary executions are served. We have seen Policemen behave like armed robbers, and armed robbers operate with police uniforms and guns. Could that be what they call 'SPECIAL DUTY'? Armed robbers kill when they are resisted, Police kill even when they are obeyed. PEOPLE SHOULD SPEAKOUT PLEASE. Lets stop suffering in silence.

Africa’s best police service is that of Botswana despite being ranked 47th best in the world. This is according tothe World Internal Security and Police Index (WISPI) released by two bodies, the International Police Science Association (IPSA) and the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

The index ranked the Rwandan policeas Africa’s second best (with global position of 50th) followed by Algeria (58th), Senegal (68th) and Tunisia (72nd) in that order.Completing the top 10 for Africa were, Egypt, Burkina Faso, Ghana, South Africa and Mali respectively.

“WISPImeasures the ability of the police and other security providers to address internal security issues in 127 countries, across four domains, using sixteen indicators,” authors of the report stated. The four domains are, capacity, process, legitimacy and outcomes.

Despite the failure of Africa to break into the top forty, the continent was very prominent in the lower rankings.

Six African countries were in the bottom 10. Cameroon and Mozambique in the 120th and 122nd spots.Uganda, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Nigeria made it an African quartet at the bottom – occupying 124th to 127 slots respectively.

NIGERIA POLICE is a disgrace. Nothing will change until a proper reform of the police is achieved. This is what I witnessed at a police check point today at Akabo in Imo State. Some police men wearing police vests without name tags molested an elderly couple on their way to immunize their grandchild. They called them traffickers, and hit them with gum butts. The oldman told them he is a retired doctor and grandfather and offered to take them to see the mother of the baby. They refused insisting that the matter must be settled there with N300,000 cash despite identification of the couple by passersby and many who knew him and his wife. In the end the kept the mother and child under the sun for four hour until until the couple and sympathizers scrapped 75,000 and gave them. They threatened to shoot people who iwere interceding claiming that nothing will happen since the authorities were aware of their actions. The doctor is saying he would go to court. Nigeria is finished.

Mercy Olamide Afolaranmi, a student of Microbiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has committed suicide.
According to the school’s Chief Security Officer, Babatunde Oyatokun, Miss Afolaranmi, poisoned herself. Students and a neighbour close to the deceased also said she killed herself due to poor grade.

“We got a call that one of our students took poison,” Mr. Oyatokun said. “We got to hospital to realise that she mixed rat poison. She gave us the contact of her parents but before they arrived, she already gave up due to the effect of the poison she took.”

A neighbour, Bimpe Oni, in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, said Miss Afolaranmi, who lived off-campus at Sabo area of Ile-Ife, died on Thursday, after she took “rat poison mixed with battery extract.”

Mrs. Oni said the late student committed suicide because of “emotional pressure.” A student, Aisha, who was Miss Afolaranmi’s colleague in the Faculty of Science, said the deceased had ‘E’ in CHM101 (Chemistry for first year students), a reportedly dreaded course for year one students in the science and technology related faculties.

“Mercy often isolated herself in class and looked depressed,” said Aisha. “She told me she had ‘E’ in CHM101 and has been going around unhappy before this incident.” Another student in the Faculty of Student, Opeyemi, said “she took poison because of result.”

The school’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Isiaka Aransi, also confirmed the news. “Although the reason and cause of her death is yet to be known, the division is aware of the death of Mercy,” she said.

Before her death, on October 10, she posted on Facebook that: “Above all other things, I just wanna see God, see what He looks like, speak with Him face to face. I don’t wanna miss heaven. LORD HELP ME.”
