By Julius Osahon July 17, 2010 10:04PM As the Nigeria police focus their attention on Abia State in an attempt to locate the four journalists kidnapped last Sunday, three persons were abducted between Tuesday and Thursday last week, in Delta State. Cumulatively, the kidnappers are demanding over N102 million. On Tuesday night, a 70-year-old woman, identified simply as Queen, was kidnapped at Oria-Abraka, with the kidnappers demanding a ransom of N2 million. Two other victims, Johnbull Ejovi, a 56-year-old Warri-based businessman, and his son, Mudiaga, were kidnapped on Wednesday night, at about 8.00pm along the busy Airport Road by Edjeba Junction in Warri, with the kidnappers asking for N100 million. We gathered that Queen was kidnapped by a five-man gun-toting gang while she was relaxing at her home, and taken to the bush at Urhouka-Abraka, home to the Delta State University, where the kidnappers made contact with her relations and demanded the ransom. But the abductors, after a series of negotiations, later settled for N200, 000 and asked that the ransom money be brought to them at a particular spot in Urhouka-Abraka. However, luck ran out of the kidnappers when five of them were arrested in the process of trying to collect the ransom. They are now with the police, while Mrs Queen regained her freedom on Wednesday afternoon. We also gathered that Mr Ejovi, his wife, and son, Mudiaga, were returning home at about 8.30pm when they had a flat tyre at the Edjeba junction, Warri. It was in the process of putting a call to his house at the Bendel Estate for another car to take the family home, that the kidnappers struck, but they freed his wife to go home to negotiate and “arrange the cash”. As at the time of this report, the family said they were in negotiations with the kidnappers. Charles Muka, the Delta State police command public relations officer, said five persons were arrested in connection with Mrs Queen’s kidnap, while efforts were on to secure the release of Mr Ejovi and his son. Mr Muka added that the kidnappers have lowered their ransom to N4 million. |
how is this politics? |
agabaI23:you have a point but no where did i say that Onovo should not be fired. i simply said that it is not the solution. your subsequent comments bear witness with my view point. After Ribadu left, what next? has looting by governors not gone haywire? the problem is the top (aso rock). if we have a govt that would act like ribadu did from the top and develop systems that would outlive them, then we are headed in the right direction. Not this pretentious lot that are no different from the past. |
Emmy Boy:the crux of the matter. I think it is because the system sets up the society to have such police. the police job is a very corruptible job every where in the world. Ours is most decadent and exceedingly corrupt because we have a system that makes it flourish. in other climes, the system makes it very difficult to get away with corruption and even makes it unattractive to pursue corrupt tendencies. i am not convinced that the average Nigerian (including police men) are inherently more corrupt than their colleagues elsewhere. In a system where you know you can get away with anything, you know that as long as it is a government job mediocrity and ineptitude is expected and often celebrated, in such a system you get the kind of police we have. Until we have a political leadership that decides to bulk the trend and match action with words, we are doomed. changing IG is a cosmetic solution which i support but the root cause goes way deeper. I said elsewhere and i still hold that view that the police officers are not more corrupt than most Nigerians, the fact is just that being law enforcers, they have more opportunities and being the enforcers have the liberty to get away with almost anything. When you then factor in the illiteracy in the force, you have a potent mix. |
Dede1:well said but being a realist you know it ain't gonna happen |
the tribalism on this forum is sickening. |
agabaI23:it would not be much different. you are misdiagnosing the problem. the problem is not just the head, the system is rotten. As bad as Onovo is, the police force is nothing to write home about. a good IG would make somne difference but not much. |
The man should go. It will not change anything, but at least it will show that incompetence is no longer rewarded. The new person might not be much different as the problem is the system. the system can only be changed from the top (Aso rock). the present occupant of Aso rock is incapable of effecting the needed change. More importantly, i think the systemic change we need is not the gradual type but a sudden eruptive one. Unfortunately, it has to be truly violent to be effective. |
amaureece:Dude, this thing is called opinion. it is not gospel truth nor inscribed in the Geneva convention. he should retrace his steps to Cabassa. this knew guy is using 9ice to 'learn work'. |
Aloy, what sort of low life posts these kind of fabricated uncoordinated thrash? |
Abagworo:that is impossicant (impossible + can't). Mode 9 is there. |
amaureece:so we should just take your words? on what basis? If the production was right in the past, why did he fix something that ain't broken? singing a duet with KSA does not make it worth 2,000. by the way the cover of VERSUS does not depict that. the guy has talent but he tends to lack proper management and me thinks he is beginning to overestimate his ability in recent times. |
2,000 when we still have the NL request thread?? Na joke be that? I beg free me. I have said it before, this Chibo or whatever he is called, the new producer is not working for 9ice. In my view, the guy dey use 9ice learn work. Why fix a thing that ain't broken? Why not stick with Cabassa? Ibime:When you listen to stuff like Appetizer and even a few of the tracks on the tradition album, the comment above begins to make sense. the gongo Aso album broke ethnic barriers.even folks who did not hear a word of yoruba were singing along to almost all tracks there. these days, his obsessed fans tell us we don't get it cos we don't understand the depth of his lyrics. Well, i wish him all the best. |
candylips:Hating over what the media fed you. someone had to love her and it happened to be him. i doubt he used her. the same thing people say about Ali/Patricia Leon. |

If he sticks to making good music, cut down on the uncountable collabos and get a dope album out, we will see who will be laughing last. Obviously not Kelly. |
Come over Ms Scott, lets take a long walk. Just me and you o! |
M.I. is not as intelligent as i assumed. Can't he just keep shut? Go hard, you won't go hard (or according to some, can't go hard). Ignore the retard (Kelly), you won't ignore him. Dude is falling my hand big time. |

July 15, 2010 11:54PM print email The 24-hour ultimatum given by the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, to kidnappers in Abia State to release four journalists and their driver has come and gone. And the kidnapped journalists haven't been freed. There has been a spate of kidnappings in the Southeastern part of the country; this latest one has provided an opportunity for more people to see how ineffective, careless, untrained and unprepared our security agencies are when it comes to safe guarding the lives of Nigerians. The president of Nigeria Bar Association, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has already called out the Akwa Ibom and Abia State police, including the SSS on the handling of the kidnapping and vowed to hold the security agencies responsible if any harm befalls the journalists. After the news of the incident broke, Onovo with his entourage travelled to Abia State on Tuesday for what was thought to be a well planned and calculated rescue mission. While it was commendable that the police chief sprang to action and moved to the crime vicinity for proper assessment, it is on the current evidence of results, difficult not to see his trip as a face saving mission, a public relations tour de force. On Wednesday, while families and friends of the victims were still praying for their safe release, Onovo was meeting with traditional rulers and his kinsmen begging them to save his job. He is afraid he will be seen as a failure if the kidnappings persists in the East; he will be seen as a doctor who cannot cure himself. How did we get to this stage where kidnapping has ballooned to a daily nightmare of epidemic proportions in a country where millions of naira is voted for security annually? Based on his speech in Abia in the wake of the latest incident, it is apparent the Inspector General has no clue or if he does, he has never given a thought to finding a lasting solution to the latest scourge that has hit the country. We would have expected by now that the police would have raided the hideouts of the kidnappers and released the journalists based on Onovo's tough talk on Tuesday, "For daring the police and the federal government, the police will now face kidnappers squarely as our new method will be too bad for them. It will affect innocent citizens but we must do it as you cannot have omelette without breaking an egg to have it done for one to eat". This statement alone shows how rudimentary the Inspector General's approach to the situation is. Not only has he endangered the lives of five innocent Nigerians with his flippancy, it is also now clear that the Nigerian Police Force has not been approaching this problem with the seriousness required. Many citizens have already lost their lives to these individuals that defy any polite description. Both private citizens and government institutions have lost hundreds of millions to these hardened criminals over the years that kidnapping has become a lucrative business. Yet the IG is just waking up to "face the kidnappers squarely"? Also exactly what does the chief of police mean when he says that his new method will affect innocent citizens? While no one subscribes to kidnapping or the paying of ransom to kidnappers, any plan by the police to break the family heirloom while trying to kill a rat is not welcome. His plan seems sinister, a plan that will put innocent citizens in harm's way. We have seen too many villagers and villages like Odi in Niger Delta, wiped out because of lack of proper security planning to rescue situations like this. Mr. Onovo should also remember that his first assignment is to protect innocent Nigerian citizens. He needs a long lasting solution, instead of this PR and save-my-job reaction he has embarked on. There are ways to safely negotiate in a hostage situation. The way the police chief is going about it right now is definitely not one of them. He is not fighting for the release of the kidnapped, but for his job. And when all is said and done and the journalists have been safely handed over to their families, the Inspector General of Police and Minister of Defense have questions to answer on why a country that has an array of security agencies with appropriate funding from the federal government has to invite Israelis to save us. 234Next |
Abagworo:Lulu is a rotten liar. Is this how much he is willing to trade his mother for money? I detest kidnappers exceedingly but it is obvious this guy is not willing to cough out. raised 1 million from relatives? He must think he is talking to retards. He had better get serious before harm is done to his mother. Those crooks no dey look face o. Where is all the money he made from the world cup? i dont believe this for one second. sani lulu is a criminal. staging the kidnap of his mother to earn the sympathy of the nation will not be a big deal for him considering his criminal ways. nigerians are not foolish, how can he tell us he couldnt even raise 1million naira, that he had to sollicit from the family, that just infuriates me.who does he think he is fooling?? 236,000dollars lost from nfa office,1 million dollars from FIFA and 900milion naira govt grant(all for the world cup) all unaccounted for. not to talk of other private companies like glo that also sponsored the team.wer did al ds moni go? if not to mr lulu’s pocket as well as his co-criminals ogunjobi and d rest. no symathy for this man, whether this story is true or not you must go to prison to reflect on ur actions and hopefully change ur criminal ways |
The same way militancy started. Government was clueless and prancing around. The monster gre so large that it almost engulfed the entire ND. This one has started again and they are docile believing it is only a problem in Abia state. I hope another monster is not breeding in our midst. This docile and clueless government, i hope you wake up. |
