first of all, i need to thank Chidi Amuta for a wonderful piece.
Pieces like this are not common in present day Nigeria media.
Not just the content but the writing is tfirst class.
To the issue of Abia, while i am uncomfortable with the haste in which folks trhough figures around online and i cannot vouch for the figures Abagworo has posted, i am inclined to believe that it is not far from the truth.
I have asked questions, i have visited the place nd i have relatives and acquintances who have been victims.
At the last count, i know seven (7) persons who have been kidnapped in Abia state, particularly along Aba-Obehie road.
No one reports or even tells of robbery incidents in the state as everyone has become victims.
I said this in a recent thread and i wish to repeat it again, the state of infrastructure in Abia state is worse than what you will find in most parts of Afghanistan and obviously worse than Sudan. You visit Aba and you immediately wonder if you are in a war zone.
there is no need blaming Ngwas or Asa.
The case of total decay in Abia state is a state of emergency, not just for Abians but for the entire country.
You may think you are abroad and your folks are in a far away state.
This was what the elite though when Odili was breeding the present day militants, now hunter is now the hunted and in spite of the fraudulent amnesty, the rich are the victims of kidnapping and other militant activities.
If we do not arrest this anarchy breeding in Abia state, it will envelope the entire country very soon.Afterall, the hoodlums in Abia do not need a visa to get into Lagos or Enugu.
While the state is burning, the inept and clueless soul who is governor is dancing around hoping from one acronym to another and making senseless speeches.
there must be something fundamentally wrong with the Nigerian system that throws up these hoodlums in places of authority.
Which Chi cracked the palm kernel of these barbarians?
Honestly no serious State can use short term funds for long term development. . .
so this is a welcome development. .

If u read the article,u will see they will use part of the bond raised
"to reduce its interest costs, improve the overall cash flow of the state as well as extend the tenor of its facilities to enable it to match its infrastructure needs with longer tenored funds,"

What that means is the state currently has short term loans from banks for which it pays probably 20% plus
It will retire those loans

One thing u gotta know is that it probably costs 2 times more to build infrastructure in the swamp of Bayelsa
than in any other part of Nigeria. .

I dont see anything wrong with the Bond issue
and more Nigerian States should go for it
Paddy_lo, you are too intelligent to believe and trust these gangsters and in the process apply classic economic theories to validate their schemes.
There is nothing wrong with bonds but there is everything wrong with Nigerian state governments goingto the bond market.considering the fact that these men might not be there in two years time, to mortgage a state for a 20 year bond is irresponsible.
Government is Nigeria is not a continous project.
These gangsters will begin some white elephant projects with the proceeds from the bond, then their successors will come and scrap the project while still servicing the bond with taxpayers money.
With the money they get allocated that is interest free and not repayable, what do they do,apart from stealing it?
How can he that is unfaithful with little be put in charge of more?
This morally reprehensible, before God, man and even the devil.

With the inherent risk of default due to corruption and instability of governance, i wonder who is underwriting these sorts of bonds.

if Sani Lulu has perfected his script as claimed in the post above, what stops EFCC from bringing him to book?
Does FIFA prohibit criminal investigations?
Why not send EFCC after Lulu and his fellow crooks while allowing them hold their positions from cell, next door to Bode George?

In addition to sending EFCC after Lulu, why not just starve NFF of funds (i know they will still have FIFA grants to chop but it will not be enough)?
Why not make an example with Lulu to an extent that loafers will be scared of running for NFF elections?
Do the supporters of this silly move realise that if the impending FIFA ban is lifted in 10 years time, Lulu's board will still be reinstated as a pre -condition for lifting the ban?

Wow, alot of ignorant folks on this site.

The reasons why the President decided to stay away from football for 2 years is due to the following:
a. With the Nigeria FA quick to play the "FIFA will ban Nigeria if the Government intervenes" game card, it was always going to be impossible to nail these bloody thieves who have amassed mass wealth by destroying the future of Nigerian football. Now that the Government has decided to "ban" itself from FIFA, the sweeping begins and those bloody thieves are going to be locked up and prosecuted for not only the misappropriation of funds, but also the silly games of forcing players that are not good enough on the coaches.

b. With the politician thieves out of the office, a new change will be brought forth that will enable the true football heads who know what the game entails and have the recipe to get Nigerian football back on track before these politicians totally destroy what's left of it.

c. Bring back diligence, discipline and patriotism back into the national team.
d. Create a new foundation and constitution that will ensure these thieving politicians will not smell the FA office again.
e. Stop the influx of these undercover players agents in the FA who refuse to give the real ballers the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Now, if someone still insist that the above examples are not good enough reasons to "ban" the FA from FIFA competitions, then that person need their head re-examined for brain leakage.
I am not just appalled by your ignorance, what drives me nuts is that your have the effontery to call others ignorant.
you support illegality and banditry and have the guts to garnish it with insults.

mikeansy:
Sani Lulu has put in place all machineries to re-elect himself and nobody could stop him. Not even Jonathan can do that without engaging in what will be an open interference in football based on FIFA's definition.

But Nigeria has a choice to be part of FIFA or Not, and the Nigerian authority has jurisdiction to decide what kind of associations can exist in Nigeria or who associations or agencies in Nigeria can relate to especially if it affects our National Interests and common good.

So the Nigerian Government has the power to severe relationships with FIFA in other to sought its football out and FIFA will have no say in our affairs during this window.

It will be up to FIFA though not to re-accept Nigeria if they feel the reasons for Nigeria banning itself was not for the common good of football.

I think this is a smart move and perhaps the only cards available to Jonathan since Sani Lulu wants to play hardball.
governance is not easy o!
you get several opinions from your advisers that contradict themselves.at the end of the day issues that look simple from the outside are muddled up in bureaucracy and political grandstanding.
Having said that, the haphazard way this Ebele man is going about his job is bewildering. You just can't discern any direction in government policies and directives.

there are various ways of looking at this problem as it is hydra headed.however a few points need to be buttressed.
the problem is not just a lack of facilities, several states have good facilites in LGAs.the problem is maintenance.some of these facilities are abandoned minutes after commissioning.
another problem is staffing.the stories of health centers with one or no doctor abound.you see scenarios where five health centers are run by one doctor.where there are doctors, the government ignores there welfare.two years ago, a state in the south made so much fanfare of building several health care centres.these centres were equipped to the hilt but the NYSC doctors were not paid for 12 calender months.most of them quietly abandoned the PHC centres for PP in the cities.
it makes no sense building primary health care centres, equipping them and not staffing them properly.
you find cases where people queue for long hours to see the doctor, especially since it is free, they go back home frustrated and disappointed.

Career › Re: Medical Doctors' Forum: Let Us Know You! by mbulela: 6:50am On Jun 30, 2010
beneli:
If the role of the NMA is the same as that of their counterpart in the UK, then most of the things they’d be doing would be focused on protecting the interest of the Doctors.

That’s right. It’s not so much about protecting the ‘integrity of their various private practices’, it’s about protecting Doctors interest in a dog-eat-dog-world. That’s what professional associations do! It doesn’t really matter what is on paper, the NMA officials are voted in by other Doctors based on what they plan to offer to the Doctors.

That’s not to say that they are oblivious of their Hippocratic (hypocrites) oath to practice medicine ethically. Far from it, its just that the bigger picture determines how they meet the obligations of that oath. The bigger picture is that so-called ‘systemic rot’.

I think the rot set in because of so many factors.

Obviously Doctors cannot absolve themselves completely of the blame since they (we) haven’t done really that much to change it other than agitate for increased salaries. But can you really blame the Doctors?

Before I left Naija, I doubt I was earning up to 50k per month. Having the toga of a ‘doctor’ around me, there were a lot of responsibilities that started to be thrust upon me, by society, based on the erroneous belief that I was now making loads of money. So because of the demands and expectations upon my meagre income I found myself deteriorating quite rapidly into penury!

To make ends meet I had to look for locums to do, private patients to treat, thereby working round the clock; I was accommodated at my night job, from where I commuted to my day job. I didn’t have a life. I didn’t have access (as in time) for training. I was frustrated. My frustration must have been palpable in my practice, no doubt but I left the country before I snapped.

I cannot speak for my colleagues who are in Nigeria, no matter how I try to empathise with them. But one thing is clear: a hungry man is an angry man, and a lot of our Doctors in Nigeria are hungry. That is a fact.

I think that Dr Ransome-Kuti’s statement also says quite a lot about the system itself.

It is difficult to mobilize all the health workers within the structures currently available. Structures need to be mounted that allows health workers to be better regulated. Structures need to be in place that defines the standards of care that we wish to achieve, striving to make these standards comply with internationally accepted best practices, and making these standards available to all the health providers. Structures need to be in place that penalizes health providers that do not meet up with these standards. That’s how a system that wants to work, works.

Civil society organizations also have a role to play. People should be making demands on their health providers and not adopting the ‘ee-go-better’ attitude. The truth is; ee no go better unless we do something about it!

I don’t know what to say, really. I could go on another rant on how it’s dangerous to get our health advise and prescriptions of the internet blah-blah-blah, but I am sure you know all that, so I wonder if saying ‘sorry’, would suffice.
one of those boring days and i stumbled upon this thread and this argument in particular.
While Ajanlekoko has put his points across as throughly as he always does, i think his expectation is a bit idealistic.
I believe that the problem with our medical sector is a symptom of a bigger problem - a failed and crumbling system. The problem with medical practitioners is no different from the problem with nigerian lawyers or nigerian engineers.Everyone feels the system is sinking fast and wishes to grab as much as possible before the titanic sinks. It may not be a right attitude or approach but unless the system is fixed, you can't get nor expect better.
the second problem is that medicine like teaching are callings not vocations.
many people got into medical school with expectations of venturing into a money spinner.
Alas, they take out there frustration on society when that dream does not materialise.
In summary, Nigerians will get Nigerian doctors.the common denominator is the Nigerian system.
It is futile asking for or expecting anything different.
Ajanlekoko has described his attitude to work (the lad is a true model wink), i am certain there are doctors with similar approach to there profession but they in the minority and are few and far between.the fact the majority migrate to europe/non america and conform is a proof to the fact that the system is faulty. it is the same system that is at fault for the deteriorating quality of medical graduates.the quality is appaling and frightful.
Crime › Ghana-based Nigerian Named In Fraud Ring by mbulela(op): 6:25am On Jun 30, 2010
From Tokunbo Adedoja in New York, 06.30.2010

A Ghana-based Nigerian Ademola Adegoke has been arrested by United States security operatives in connection with a multimillion-dollar West African crime enterprise.

The Nigerian who was brought to US from Ghana on Monday, was alleged to be involved in a worldwide scheme that allegedly defrauded US and Canadian citizens, travel agencies of an estimated $2 million.

His arrest was said to have been the result of a 10-month investigation by US Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), United States Secret Service, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police, with support from authorities in Ghana.

A statement from the US Bureau of Diplomatic Security Services said other agencies and countries that assisted in the investigation include the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the United Kingdom’s Serious Organised Crime Agency, the US Department of Education Inspector General’s Office, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, Amtrak Police Department, US Postal Inspection Service, the Columbus, Ohio Police Department, and the Alexandria, Virginia Police Department.

The statement, which noted that Ghanaian authorities had confirmed that Adegoke is a Nigerian citizen, said the suspect managed the crime ring from Ghana, and had been indicted on multiple federal counts of wire fraud, identity theft, access device fraud, and conspiracy in the Eastern District of Virginia.

"The Government of Ghana expelled Adegoke to the United States. He was flown to New York today (Monday) and will be prosecuted in the Eastern District of Virginia," the statement said, adding, "if the suspect is convicted, the US government could potentially seize several international bank accounts and the nearly $700,000 they contain."

On the mode of operation of the crime ring, the statement said: “First, the group purchased stolen credit card account numbers. Second, they electronically manipulated the credit card numbers onto computer images of credit cards. Third, they emailed those images, along with fraudulent passport and driver’s license information, to travel agencies to facilitate the purchase of airline tickets to the United States. And fourth, they sold the tickets to travelers.”

The statement said Ghanaian Police arrested Adegoke on May 5, and that investigators from DSS and the Secret Service worked closely with the Ghanaian Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Division to track him down. It also said CBP’s Criminal Enforcement Unit at JFK International Airport conducted multiple interviews with those suspected of purchasing the tickets on stolen credit cards to gain more information.

Quoting Todd Brown, Special Agent in Charge of Diplomatic Security’s Washington Field Office, the statement said: “This has been a particularly complex investigation that has required the expertise and talent of numerous US and international law enforcement agencies and personnel.”

Also Jeffrey Irvine, Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service’s Washington Field Office, was quoted as saying, “The methods criminals use to commit financial crimes have evolved significantly over the last several years,” and that cooperation among US agencies makes it possible for quick response to uncover criminal activity like the one involving Adegoke and prevent additional financial fraud.”

I wonder how many people here have passed through Abia state in recent years (i am not even talking of living there.that is a punishment i do not wish on my enemies)?
the place seems to be a war zone devoid of any form of governance.even parts of Afghanistan are better off.there are an average of at least 2 kidnappings every day along the Obehie axis of PH/Aba express road.
Changing party is irrelevant to the vast majority of Abians.
We need to flush out T.A. Orji and Orji Uzor Kalu not forgeting his mother and brothers.
this is not just a case of bad leadership in south east, it is a Nigerian problem.
The chi that cracked the palm kernel of our political elite is a horible, disgusting chi.
