Politics › Ogbulafor, Governors Unable To See Yar’adua by mbulela(op): 4:28am On Feb 16, 2010
From Chuks Okocha in Abuja, 02.16.2010

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) have joined the array of supporters who made the journey to Saudi Arabia but could not gain access to ailing President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
Similarly, Governors Gabriel Suswam of Benue, Ibrahim Shema of Katsina and Isa Yuguda of Bauchi, who jetted out of the country last Thursday for the same purpose, could not see him.

Yar’Adua has not been seen in public since he left the country in November 23, 2009. His only public utterance was a BBC interview in January meant to refute rumours that he was dead. It lasted less than three seconds and he spoke with much effort.
Several groups including members of the House of Representatives who embarked on a fact-finding mission to Saudi Arabia came back without seeing him.

THISDAY learnt that efforts by the Ogbulafor team to see Yar’Adua were rebuffed by Saudi security officials attached to the President.
Instead, they were allowed to meet with the first lady, Turai, and the Nigerian Ambassador to the country, Abdullahi Aminchi.
Others in the team were the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Dr. Haliru Mohammed, the National Secretary, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, and the Deputy National Secretary, Dr. Musa Babayo.

They arrived Saudi Arabia last Saturday and secured an appointment to see Turai that night. The governors also saw the President’s wife and his ADC.
“All I can say for now is that Isa Yuguda, who is an in-law to the President with Garbiel Suswam and Ibrahim Shema, the governor of the President’s home state, have seen and discussed with the wife of the President,” said a source who spoke to THISDAY.
He continued: “The Nigerian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia facilitated an easier way for the discussion, but they are yet to see the President as we speak now.”

Meanwhile, the PDP chairman has headed for India for treatment after the botched visit while others in his team left for Nigeria. The three governors are said to have headed back to the country via Dubai last Saturday.
In the absence of the President, the National Assembly passed a resolution last week empowering Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President.

This follows failed attempts to get Yar’Adua to send a vacation letter to the National Assembly, which would have served the same purpose.
The action has both been hailed and questioned. Those who hailed it insisted that Nigeria must go on in the absence of President Yar’Adua. Those who questioned the resolution said it was unconstitutional.

Stop insulting God.I beg you.
Tell you looters called leaders to disappoint me.
That will make my day.
Why will the amnesty program succeed?
Have you ever heard of a scenario where you grant amnesty to criminals?
This thing was just a project designed to scam the public and share money between the looters in power and the criminals from the Niger Delta.
The painful thing is that the ND problem remains unattended. The so called militants have a singular ideology, called money.
They are not fighting for the interest of the people of the geo political zone.
They are no different from the political elite. The only difference is the methodology.

Politics › Jonathan, Governors In Secret Deal by mbulela(op): 11:08pm On Feb 13, 2010
By Our correspondent, Published: Saturday, 13 Feb 2010

Plans for the dissolution of the federal cabinet are at an advanced stage, Saturday Punch has learnt. The imminent dissolution, sources said, was part of a secret deal between the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and governors. The deal led to the emergence of Jonathan as Acting President after the governors had prevailed on the National Assembly to so resolve.
The other important term of the deal, which the Acting President has fulfilled already, is the sharing of the $2bn excess crude oil earnings among the federal and state governments.
On assumption of office on Wednesday as the Acting President, following a resolution of the National Assembly the previous day, Jonathan had redeployed the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, SAN, to the Ministry of Special Duties, while the erstwhile Labour and Productivity Minister, Chief Adetokunbo Kayode, SAN, was asked to take over the AGF and justice ministry portfolios. The former Minister of Special Duties, Alhaji Ibrahim Kazaure, was also moved to the Ministry of Labour.
A reliable source in government told Saturday Punch authoritatively on Friday that the cabinet reshuffle would not result from the clamour of Nigerians for the removal of the minister, but in fulfilment of the deal Jonathan reached with the Governors Forum as part of the horse trading to make him the Acting President.
The Governors Forum had shown initial resistance to make Jonathan Acting President, following the over two-month absence of President Umaru Yar‘Adua, who has been undergoing medical treatment in Saudi Arabia since November 23, 2009.
Chairman of the Governors‘ Forum, Dr. Bukola Saraki, had insisted on behalf of his colleagues, while speaking with journalists after a meeting on January 6, 2010, that there was no vacuum.
”People should be called to order. We must warn anti-democratic elements. All the organs of government are working and functional at all levels. The President‘s health is improving,” Saraki had said.
But the governors made a volte-face and decided to throw their weight behind Jonathan after allegedly giving him two major conditions, which included the dissolution of the FEC and the sharing of funds from the Excess Crude Account that had not been touched since Yar‘Adua travelled on medical grounds.
The ECA currently holds $6.2bn, which the governors argued could be used to beef up the monthly allocations to the states in the event of funds shortage from the Federation Account.
Saturday Punch was informed that a good number of the governors were unhappy with the ministers, most of who were alleged to be battling the governors for the control of the ruling political parties in their respective states.
The governors were believed to be worried that some of the ministers were either planning to take over their positions or sponsor candidates to challenge them or their handpicked successors in the 2011 general election.
Our correspondent was told that Peoples Democratic Party governors, in particular, were not happy that they were not given the opportunity to nominate the ministers representing their respective states. Most of them claimed that the stiff opposition they were facing from the ministers was related to the issue of their nomination by those who are close to ailing President Umaru Yar‘Adua.
It was gathered that in many of the states, which have members of the PDP Board of Trustees, the governors were not consulted on the issue of nominating the ministers and even ambassadors.
For instance, in Ogun State, Governor Gbenga Daniel did not nominate the Minister of Health, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, who was elevated from his former position of Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS.
Last year, Chief Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State led a delegation of party stalwarts from the state immediately after defecting from the Peoples Progressive Alliance to the PDP, to President Yar‘Adua, to protest the appointment of his predecessor, Chief Achike Udenwa, as Minister of Commerce and Industry. Udenwa has since been battling Ohakim for the control of the PDP in Imo State.
In Abia State, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief. Ojo Maduekwe, got his job because of his then position as the National Secretary of the PDP, while a former governor of the state, Dr. Orji Kalu, nominated Dr. Chuka Odom, an indigene of Imo State as the Minister of State for the FCT as his party‘s, PPA‘s representative in the Yar‘Adua government. At the moment, Kalu‘s relationship with Theodore Orji is not as good as it was.
Similarly, the present Minister of Environment, Mr. John Odey, from Cross Rovers State, owes his ministerial appointment to his former position as the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP.
The situation is not different in Anambra State where a former Director General of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Dora Akunyili, was picked from Abuja without consultations with Governor Peter Obi who won election under the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance.
Similarly in both Katsina and Bayelsa states which produced President Yar‘Adua and Jonathan respectively, the ministers were not the preferred choices of the governors. In Katsina, the current Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Abba Ruma, and Governor Ibrahim Shema are locked in a subtle contest for the governorship ticket in the next general election.
Also Mrs Dieziani Allison-Madueke is widely believed to be the nominee of Jonathan, who is now the Acting President. It is no secret that there is no love lost between Jonathan and Governor Timipre Sylva.
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State and his Rivers State counterpart, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, believe that the Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr. Odein Ajumogobia, and the Minister of State for the Niger Delta, Mr. Godsday Orubebe, were imposed on them.
Equally, the Minister of State for Works, Mrs. Grace Ekpwire, a former a Head of Service in Delta State under the Administration of Chief James Ibori was nominated by the former governor.
Clearly, Uduaghan, a member of the PDP was not given the opportunity to nominate either of the two ministers from his state. While Orubebe is still a minister because Jonathan rescued him from the coordinated opposition of Uduaghan, Ajumogobia‘s situation is similar.
Although the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, Ambassador Bagudu Hirse, representing Plateau State, is said to have been nominated by Governor Jonah Jang, it is believed that there is a crack in their relationship now.
Also among the category of ministers who do not owe their nominations to the governors of their states are the Minister of Education, Governor Sam Egwu, a former governor of Ebonyi State; Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Ufot Ekaette; a former Secretary to the Federal Government; Senator Adamu Aliero, of the FCT, a former Governor of Kebbi State, who was in the Senate before the appointment.
Politics › ‘obi Not Apga’s Right Candidate’ by mbulela(op): 10:57pm On Feb 13, 2010
By Olusola Fabiyi, Abuja, Published: Saturday, 13 Feb 2010

A faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance loyal to the former chairman of the party, Chief Chekwas Okorie, has said that the governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, was not the right candidate of the party in last Saturday‘s governorship election.
Addressing a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Mr. George Ozodinobi, who was nominated by Okorie as the party‘s candidate before he was dropped by the Independent National Electoral Commission, insisted that he was the right candidate of the party.
He said since the Supreme Court had ruled that it was the party that voters normally vote for and not individual, he was the winner of the election and not Obi.
He therefore said that he and his running mate, Dr. Okey Umeano, were duly elected in the election.
Ozodinobi said the Certificate of Return given to Obi by INEC was done in error and that he was already in court to challenge that.
He said, ”We have always maintained the position that Anambra State and indeed all the states of the South-East geopolitical zone have always embraced APGA as their own.
”Our people‘s solidarity with APGA has once again been demonstrated incontrovertibly. In spite of the leadership crisis in the party that has persisted till this day, the sentiments and emotions expressed by the good people of Anambra State to APGA has remained solid, unwavering and cannot again be overstated.
”However it is our wish to reassure the members of public who remain confused about the suit in which APGA, our party has sued for the Order of Mandamus from court of competent jurisdiction to compel INEC to obey the wish of this party APGA and substitute Mr. Peter Obi with my humble self, George Ibezimako Ozodinobi and my running mate, Dr. Okey Umeano.
”The consequence envisaged therefore is that only political party sponsors candidates for election and only political parties win election.
”I, Hon. George Ibezimako Ozodinobi and my running mate Hon. Dr. Okey Umeano remain the legitimate APGA candidate for the just concluded February 6 governorship election of Anambra State.
The public and INEC should be guided by the Supreme Court Judgment on the case of Hon. Rotimi Amechi versus Mr. Celestine Omehia to announce the party that has won the election in Anambra State, in this case APGA, instead of pre-empting the Court by annoucing Peter Obi as the beneficiary of the mandate of the people of Anambra State to APGA which has always been the party of their choice.
”The just concluded governorship election translates that the election was fought and won by APGA.
”We expect the court to determine who the authentic candidate of APGA is, since the party APGA complied with the rules guiding the election having in their correspondence of the December 4, 2009 to INEC specifying the cogent and verifiable reasons based on which the party‘s candidate should remain George Ibezimako Ozodinobi and his running mate, Dr. Okey Umeano.”

And all the bunch are the same?

You have just signed a check that will help make leading nigeria out of its problems MORE DIFFICULT. will tell you how.

WHEN YOU EXPECT NOTHING YOU GET NOTHING
IF YOU DID THE REVERSE AND SAY WHAT YOU WANT HIM TO DO EVEN YOU HAVE TO SAY IT A GAZILLION TIMES IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU LESS OR MORE A NIGERIAN.

@mubulela again

GOODLUCK IS JUST ONE MAN AND HE CANT BY HIMSELF CHANGE THE WHOLE 200MILLION NIGERIAN OR FORCE YOU TO HELP HIM THINK DIFFERENTLY

Yaradua Corrupt? well you have made it easy for any leader to come in and have a free day and go. Why? because you just EXPECTED NOTHING AND IT IS YOUR UNALLIENATED RIGHT TO GET NOTHING.

you just told the whole world that you have no hope in your countrymen. SO IF YOU ARE DISSAPOINTED WHAT SHOULD WE DO TO YOU? YOU ARE ONE OF THE NIGERIANS THAT HAVE A DEGREE IN PESSIMIOLOGY. SOME NIGERIANS THINK BY HOPING FOR ZERO AND A LOT IT FOR THAT MATTER THE MAY HAVE SUCCESS. ALOT OF THE PARASITIC ELITES NEED PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

You seem to be the leader of the BRUTE FORCE reread all you posted and you will see that you brutalize their minds to hope for nothing. There are lot of nigerians reading on this sites and they read all you say it enters into their minds NOT TO EXPECT NOTHING so the RESULTANT is that the leaders think OF NOTHING AND WILL DO NOTHING.

YOU ARE LIKE A DOCTOR TELLING THE PATIENT BLATANTLY THAT THE PATIENT WILL DIE OF MALARIA IF THAT PATIENT WAS WISE HE SHOULD SHOUT FOR HELP TO BE SAVED FROM YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE WORSE THAN THE DISEASE.

YOU JUST SENTENCED 200 MILLION OF US NIGERIANS. YOU CALLED US BARBARIANS. FINE, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO SO. YOU HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO SHOW US WE ARE BARBARIANS

GOD BLESS NIGERIA AND ITS PEOPLES
I will start from the barbarian talk.I am referring to the thieving elite that have constituted themselves into a cabal that holds the rest of the 200 million (where did you get that stat from?) to ransom. It is obvious that the rest of the country did not vote for Turai's cancer hospital fund raising.

Secondly, i think you are reading too much motivational crap.all this your GOD BLESS NIGERIA AND ITS PEOPLE does not wash with me.Such phrases do not change much,it is only when backed with action that the status quo is altered.

What did he do in Bayelsa? What did he not do?
I expect nothing until concrete steps are taken to change the system.I am not deluded and easily excited by these goons in power. Neither am i moved by the ethnic jingoisms that permeate the air.the ruling elite belong to one tribe and exchanging one for the other makes no difference. This man Jonathan does not have the guts to betray his constituents.
Until there arises a Pharoah who does not know about Joseph, we are stuck.
Politics › Re: What Immediate Action Do You Expect From Jonathan? by mbulela: 3:17am On Feb 13, 2010
I have taken my time to read through all the posts on these thread and these is my 2 cents;

There is very little Jonathan can do because his position is very unclear. The interpretation of the NASS seems to be more of native wisdom than constitutional act.If he does anything that affects the cabal holding the nation to ransom, they will flood the courts and another drama will begin.

Secondly, as long as the state of Yar Adua remains uncertain, the logjam persists. If he has any intention of doing anything tangible, the first step will be to send and empower a high level team to ascertain the state of Yar Adua's health (this must include at least two esteemed medical doctors),even if it means involving the Saudi government.I am not sure that Turai is that powerful to contain the might of the federal government. If Yar Adua is certified to be on his way back, a reasonable and realistic time scale must be provided and Jonathan can just hold forth in the interim. If it is confirmed that the man is in no state to return, then Jonathan becomes the substantive CinC and all those that have perpetuated lies (including that Oluwole budget) must be brought to book.

Thirdly and most importantly,i am not holding my breath for two reasons. One, Jonathan's track record is nothing to write home about.Go to Bayelsa and seek informed neutral observers. The man is a part of the thieving cabal and can not just change overnight.Secondly, he comes across as an inept and clueless person, so i do not expect him to do anything substantial. He has always risen to places he never bargained for (and being fair, places he is ill equipped to function in),he will just enjoy the perks and ceremony of the office while waiting for providence to have its way.

After only 2 days, this guy done dey share money amongst him compadres. On his first day, it was a meeting with ministers to double some hotel building contract from N800m to N1.4bn so as to turn it from a 2-star to a 4-star facility. I really wonder if that should be a Presidents priority on his first day, or is it the price he had to pay to be given the Presidency?

Now its the Governors turn. If the governors feel they have run out of money, they should feel free to use the one they have already stolen to develop their respective states.

Its like these repeated calls for "economic stimulus" has become a ruse for public officials to eat deeper into the national cake.

Okonjo-Iweala set up the excess crude fund for a reason, and that was to bolster our foreign reserves, not to dip into it whenever we feel like.

Politics › Terror Blacklist: Us Gives Nigeria Four Conditions by mbulela(op): 4:41am On Feb 12, 2010
From Sufuyan Ojeifo and Onwuka Nzeshi in Abuja, 02.12.2010

Nigeria would have to meet four conditions before it could be removed from the list of 14 “countries of interest”, a group whose nationals are under heavy scrutiny by the United States for potential terrorist activities.

And in another development, Britain has commended Nigeria for the way it resolved the political crisis caused by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s prolonged hospitalisation in Saudi Arabia.

Removing Nigeria from the terror blacklist is being seen as a major challenge for Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, revealed the conditions given by the US during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs yesterday.

The conditions, he said, are: public condemnation of any form of terrorism anywhere in the world; improvement of security in the nation’s airports; deployment of air marshals on board aircraft and passing legislations geared towards combating terrorism in the country.

Although the meeting held behind closed-doors, Chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Honourable Bature Umar, said it was convened to get an update on the December 25, 2009, botched bombing of an American airline by 23-year-old Nigerian, Farouk Umar AbdulMutallab.

Nigeria was placed on a list of “countries of interest” shortly after the attempted bombing incident.
During the meeting, Maduekwe was said to have briefed the lawmakers on how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been handling the diplomatic row that followed after Nigeria was listed.

Maduekwe also briefed the committee on issues of common interest to the US and Nigeria, particularly the deployment of troops in Sudan; the transformation of the Africa Union (AU) and the recent controversy over the failure of the Nigerian Embassy to pay about $16 million tax on its property located in New York.

The interaction, Bature said, had put paid to insinuations that the inclusion of Nigeria on the watch list makes it a terrorist country.
According to him, “Nigeria was listed as a ‘country of interest’ which requires that anybody flying from or through Nigeria to the United States should be subjected to extra security check irrespective of his citizenship.”

Meanwhile, the resolution by the National Assembly empowering Jonathan to take over as Acting President pending the return of the president has been commended by the United Kingdom.

Maduekwe, announced UK’s statemnent yesterday at an interactive session with the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Maduekwe said that the British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, called him to express the British Government’s profound appreciation at the effective management of the crisis by the National Assembly, the Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF) and the entire leadership of the country.

He also confessed at the session that Yar’Adua’s absence made his assignment in diplomatic circles very difficult.
“Just before I came in here, the British Foreign Secretary called me and he expressed his government’s profound appreciation that a challenging time like this is being managed very well by the National Assembly, by the Executive Council of the Federation, by the entire leadership; that Nigeria has justified the confidence many of Nigeria’s friends have in this country,” the foreign minister stated.

In response to a question on the difficulty encountered in managing diplomatic relations during the period, Manduekwe stated that “One cannot divorce the issue of diplomacy from the issue of the domestic situation.”
He stressed that “all over the world, wherever I go, the challenge is made even more difficult for me with the unfortunate indisposition of the President”.

He added: “Of course, the Vice-President himself cannot travel. Where the President should normally be and he is unable to be there, it should be the Vice-President.

“But if the President is outside the country, it means the Foreign Minister will be instructed through the then Vice-President, now Acting President to represent the nation.

“So, through my encounters with presidents, prime ministers, they asked about their brother, our President, and I had a very difficult challenge to explain things to them, to assure them that Nigeria is going through a very difficult moment.

“We miss our President but the country is not about to implode as they all think. Of course, that has its own security implications.
“But I assured them and the National Assembly has vindicated me in that assurance. I assured them that whatever happened, the constitution of the country; that the robustness of our democracy is intact and that we will come out of this strong, respected, appreciated and will play very vital role in how this country will move forward.”

According to him, “When the National Assembly took the historic decision they took a few days ago, not only did it bring stability to the nation, it also assisted the Foreign Minister in his task of engaging the rest of the world.”

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Jibril Aminu, had told Maduekwe that the Senate Committee on Appropriations had rejected the Ministry of Foreign Affairs proposed miscellaneous budget of N2.4 billion.

He said the Appropriations Committee had maintained its position on working within the framework of the budget and had advised that the Ministry should consider areas of its N44 billion budget where adjustments could be made.
Politics › Jonathan, Obasanjo Hold Secret Meeting by mbulela(op): 4:39am On Feb 12, 2010
•Ag. President swears in new Perm Secs •Aondoakaa, Ogbulafor jet out

Acting President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo met at a secret location in Abuja on Wednesday night, THISDAY can report.

Although THISDAY could not confirm the venue and details of the meeting, it was learnt that the talk did not take place at the Vice-President’s Akinola Aguda House residence in Aso Rock.

The meeting, which started before midnight and lasted for about three hours, afforded the immediate past president, who was instrumental to the Yar’Adua/Jonathan ticket in the 2007 presidential election, an opportunity to offer far-reaching advice to the Acting President.

Obasanjo flew into Abuja in a private jet around 8pm on the day. After the meeting ended around 2am yesterday, he flew out of Abuja an hour later.
An aide to Jonathan, who confirmed the meeting, said the Acting President was open to support and advice from all quarters, as he had already held meetings with other key stakeholders in the polity.

And the wheel of government, which had virtually been clogged with the power vacuum created by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s prolonged absence, is now running in full force as Jonathan yesterday swore in 17 new Federal Permanent Secretaries.
Jonathan also played host to principal officers of the Senate at his residence and promised to start sending executive communications to the National Assembly soon.

Jonathan became Acting President on Tuesday after the two chambers of the National Assembly passed resolutions empowering him to assume full presidential powers in the absence of Yar’Adua who left the country for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia on November 23 last year.
Meanwhile, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Mike Aondoakaa, was also seen at the Abuja airport last night on his way out of the country.

He was said to be heading to somewhere in Europe “to rest” a day after he lost his high-profile job in a minor cabinet reshuffle.
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, and three other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party left Abuja via London yesterday to brief Yar'Adua on the developments in Nigeria.
The decision of the leadership of the PDP to visit Yar'Adua in Saudi Arabia was taken after the NWC meeting with the principal officers of the National Assembly at the PDP office in Abuja.

Three governors, Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina) and Gabriel Suswam (Benue) had left Nigeria for Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to meet Yar'Adua.
The delayed swearing-in of the permanent secretaries had raised concerns as the Vice-President could not swear them in without full presidential powers and many ministries had been operating without the heads of bureaucracy for months.

The permanent secretaries, comprising three women and 14 men, had been selected since November last year through written and oral process but their swearing-in and assumption of office had been stalled until yesterday.

While receiving the principal officers of the Senate in an early morning visit, Jonathan assured them that the executive arm of government would continue to maintain cordial working relationship with the legislative arm of government.
He also thanked members of the National Assembly for their courage in moving the nation forward in spite of the heated debate occasioned by the President’s absence.

Senate President David Mark, who led the Senate leadership on the visit, prayed God to give Jonathan the courage and wisdom to lead the country in the right direction, assuring him that “we will join you to continue to pray for quick recovery for President Umaru Yar’Adua”.

Mark was accompanied by his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu; the Senate Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin; Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mahmud Kanti Bello; Senate Minority Leader, Senator Maina Maaji Lawan; Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Olorunnibe Mamora; Minority Whip, Senator Ahmed Yerima; Deputy Majority Whip, Senator Mohammed Mana; and Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya.

Politics › Anambra: Ngige Calls For Run-off, Heads For Tribunal by mbulela(op): 4:38am On Feb 12, 2010
From Charles Onyekamuo in Onitsha, 02.12.2010

Action Congress (AC) candidate in the February 6, 2010 governorship election in Anambra State, Dr. Chris Ngige, has challenged the re-election of Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

He called for a run-off between him, as the candidate with the next highest number of votes, and Obi, saying the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate in the election did not win fair and square and should not have been declared winner of the poll.
Ngige told journalists yesterday in Akwa, the Anambra State capital, that he was heading for the election tribunal to press for the run-off.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Obi who polled 97,843 votes the winner of the election. Ngige recorded 60,240 votes in the election.

Addressing a press conference, the AC candidate said despite the disenfranchisement of over 83 per cent of Anambra people, violence, ballot box snatching and stuffing as well as monetary inducement, which allegedly characterized the election, Obi did not meet the mandatory requirement as provided for in Section 179 (2) (a) and (b) of the 1999 Constitution and shouldn’t have been declared winner.

He said INEC’s official results showed that Obi scored a quarter of votes in only 13 council areas, “whereas two-thirds of 21 council areas should have been 14”.
Declaring Obi winner of the election, he said, contravened Section 179 (2) (a) and (b) of the 1999 Constitution. Section 179 (2) states that, “A candidate for an election to the office of Governor of a state shall be deemed to have been duly elected where, there being two or more candidates—(a) he has the highest number of votes cast at the election; and (b) he has not less than one-quarter of all the votes cast in each of at least two-thirds of all the local government areas in the state.”

INEC, he claimed, subverted the Anambra governorship electoral process “by announcing a non-winner, thereby truncating a second election or run-off in accordance with Section 179 (3) (a) (b)”.

This section provides that, “(a) In default of a candidate duly elected in accordance with subsection (2) of this section, there shall be a second election in accordance with subsection (4) of this section at which the only candidates shall be—(a) the candidate who secured the highest number of votes cast at the election; and (b) one among the remaining candidates who secured a majority of votes in the highest number of local government areas in the state, so, however, where, there are more than one candidates with a majority of votes in the highest number of local government areas, the candidate among them with the next highest total of votes cast at the election shall be the second candidate.”

Ngige said given the foregoing, INEC was supposed to organize a run-off between him and Obi as the candidate with the second highest number of votes after Obi.

He added: “In other words, the announced winner must meet this requirement in 14 local government areas in Anambra State. Indeed, the announced winner met the requirements in only 13 local government areas.

“Having secured the next highest number of votes and fulfilling Section 179(3) (a) (b) as stated above, I should be going for a second election as stipulated in Section 179 (3) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.
“Because of this travesty meted out to me and the Anambra electorate, I have decided to take my matter to the election court for the invocation of the relevant provisions of the constitution dealing with second election (run off) following the inconclusive election of February 6, 2010.”

Other major candidates in the election such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Chief Andy Uba of Labour Party (LP) and Hon. Uche Ekwunife of Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) have already accepted defeat and congratulated Obi.

Acording to the source, confirmed sources say,

all these crap the press are printing without any shred of evidence.
Where did they see Turai, to hear her vow to deal with Dora.
men and women just pick their noses while in beer parlours and come up with all sort of stories.
a large proportion of these stories are baseless and devoid of any credibility.
anyway, i don't blame them, that is what you get when you run a govt on intrigue, scheming, rumours and deceit.
