The issue of Jonathan being a coward does not arise. Blame your constitution.
First Yar'adua has to write the senate that he is not fit before Jo can be made acting president. Yar has not done that, it is not even mandatory for him to do it.
Secondly, the FEC has to declare Yar unfit, if Yar did not write, The FEC has not done that. dont forget you need 2/3 majority in the FEC to declare Yar unfit.now yar has loyalists in the FEC, it may not be easy to get 2/3 majority at the FEC.
third, in the case the above did not happen, senate may proceed on impeachment process. again you need 2/3 majority to do this.

In effect, Jo is NOT acting president going by constitution, its just a political arrangement to fill a vacuum. so anytime yar shows up. Jo automatically is a VP.

It is the constitutional problem. That is why senate has just amended the part of transfer of power to vice at the federal and state levels.

Going by this, it is wrong to call jonathan a coward.
the same constitution that empowers Turai, right?

Politics › Jonathan: His Return, Pointer To Answered Prayers by mbulela(op): 8:36am On Feb 25, 2010
From George Oji in Abuja, 02.25.2010

Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has described the return of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to the country as a pointer to God's answer of the prayers of Nigerians.
Jonathan thanked Nigerians for their continual prayers both for the president and the entire country.
In a statement by the spokesperson for the Acting President, Ima Niboro, he assured Nigerians that the ship of state was on course.

It said the Acting President called on Nigerians to continue to earnestly strive for the well being of the nation, noting that "it is at times like this that all patriots must rise to the occasion, and place the interest of the country above every other consideration."
According to him, Nigeria is still battling with the pains of development and progress; therefore all hands must be on deck to ensure that the integrity of the nation is maintained at all times.

Jonathan, the statement said, urged Nigerians to continue to work for peace, security and stability, stating that, "we have only one country that we can call our own; we must therefore single mindedly pursue our national interest at all times."
Politics › The Power Behind The Throne by mbulela(op): 8:35am On Feb 25, 2010
By Nicholas Ibekwe

A story is told of how prior to the 1991 governorship elections in Nigeria, a group of Umaru Yar’Adua loyalists visited the influential late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. Their objective was to persuade the retired General to help ensure that his younger brother became the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the elections. It would have been a simple task for the elder Yar’adua who was the de facto leader of the party, and of Katsina, their home state.

“Is it Umaru that wants to be governor or Turai,” the General reportedly asked. None of the lobbyists answered. The younger Yar’Adua didn’t pursue his ambition on that occasion, but the comments by the elder Yar’adua have been cited as evidence that even back then it was clear to those close to Umaru Yar’adua that he had a wife who wanted power and had enough influence on her husband to ensure that were he to get elected into office, she would play a significant role.

The comments attributed to the Senior Yar’adua seem even more insightful when viewed in the context of unfolding events in Nigeria.

However, not much was known about Turai, outside the family circle but all that changed in 1999 when Mr. Yar’Adua was elected the governor of Katsina State long after the death of his brother. As the First Lady, Mrs. Yar’adua is reported to have exercised considerable power, way above what one would expect of a mere consort to a governor. Physically, Mrs. Yar’adua’s has a quiet mien and from her appearance alone one would be hard pressed to imagine her capable of the political manipulations and intrigues that have been credited to her in the past few months.

Easily recognisable by her shawl and make-up, she got married to President Yar’Adua in 1975.

She attended Government Secondary School, Kankia, in present day Katsina State, and Katsina College of Arts, Science and Technology. For a while she worked as a teacher before retiring and becoming a full time housewife. Her modest Curriculum Vitae would indicate a woman who didn’t do much prior to becoming the first lady of Katsina State. From then on, she seemed to have steadily risen and become the driving force behind her husband’s government.

Government insiders believe Mrs. Yar’Adua has actually been running the government for sometime as the president has been too ill since assuming office to preside over the affairs of the state effectively. For a handful of those who knew Mrs. Yar’adua way back in Katsina, this apparently comes as no surprise.

Politics › The Turai Coup D'etat: How Turai Yar’adua Seized Power by mbulela(op): 12:47am On Feb 25, 2010
Written by SaharaReporters, New York

The sudden return of Umaru Yar’Adua to Nigeria in the early hours of this morning, which is now being referred to in Abuja as the “Turai coup d’etat,” was long in coming. Saharareporters had reported persistently that Turai Yar’Adua and her husband’s core political associates and so-called “kitchen cabinet” were afraid of permanently losing power, and the longer Yar’Adua remained sick, the more obvious that reality became. The key plotters of Yar’Adua’s audacious midnight “return” to Abuja, as earlier reported by Saharareporters, are Hajia Turai; James Ibori, the former Delta State Governor; Tanimu Kurfi, Yar’Adua’s Chief Economic Adviser; Adamu Aliero, the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory; and Gen. Sarki Mukhtar(rtd) the National Security Adviser.

The plan involved securing oil blocks allocation to the Chinese government and another gas deal with Russia. While Yar’adua was away, the hawks succeeded in getting him to “sign” the national Appropriation Bill and also succeeded in approving oil-lifting contracts in December 2009

Although, Yar’adua’s return was carried out by members of the Kitchen cabinet, facts are now emerging as to how the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, was co-opted into the deal that saw the deployment of two battalions in Abuja last night. According to a petition sighted by Saharareporters, the COAS, through the Ministry of Defence, had awarded “Peacekeeping” contracts worth N9 billion to fictitious companies reportedly owned by James Ibori, an Isreali arms supplier, Alon Neiken (the owner of Megaplaza in Lagos) and himself (Dambazau). Four companies: HIS Nigeria, Nurit International, Yommy Logistics, Mass International, Arsenal International and M-2 International, were reportedly involved in the scandalous contract.

Yar’Adua’s core loyalists from the office of the NSA used the petition to confront Dambazau, it had been submitted to the EFCC and copied, to the NSA last Monday. The team with their knowledge of the peacekeeping contracts blackmailed him. Dambazua, a Lieutenant General in the Nigerian Army, reportedly objected to earlier calls to take over power and fought back initially. But he soon gave in and started taking orders from Yar’Adua’s ADC, Mustapha Onoedieva and an army infantry colonel, to deploy troops without question. Neither Goodluck Jonathan, neither the DG of State Security Services nor the Inspector-General of Police knew what was going on.

Since Yar’Adua’s return to Nigeria this morning, members of the kitchen cabinet have engaged in several manoeuvres as a way of moving forward. They include trying to dissolve the cabinet today, but that plot was shelved because they knew that would be impossible without Yar’Adua putting up a physical appearance to explain himself to the nation or approach the Nigerian Senate to approve of new ministers.

Saharareporters had reported that Yar’Adua’s return would mean that he will “go to sleep” upon arrival while his minions figure out what to do about him. That situation has not necessarily changed, given all the trouble Team Turai has taken to ensure nobody meets sees Yar’adua in the foreseeable future, if anyone ever does. The residence where Yar’adua lie comatose has been medically fortified and secured by Nigerian soldiers and access is highly restricted. Our sources said several medical doctors imported from Saudi Arabia would manage Yar’adua’s so-called “recuperation”. There is no timeline for how long this would last but sources said it will be on for as long as the associates to hold the farce in place.

Meanwhile, Saharareporters has learned that the sudden return of Yar’Adua was as a result of the decision of the Saudi authorities to minimize the diplomatic pressure that his indefinite stay in the Kingdom was inflicting on them.

Also, Yar’Adua’s wife chose to move him out of Jeddah yesterday because some of the Ministers visiting the kingdom were insisting on seeing him, going through the Saudi government. Sources in Saudi Arabia told Saharareporters that Turai had contacted the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ojo Maduekwe, to delay the trip and re-route the six-ministers to Riyadh first.

That was contrary to the original plan of the Federal Executive Council for the six-man team first to visit Yar’Adua in Jeddah, and then make a “Thank You” visit to the King of Saudi Arabia before returning home. Maduekwe, playing his part in Turai’s script, connived with Aviation officials at the Presidency to delay the trip by one day. By the next day and to the utter shock of the other cabinet ministers who took the decision to send the team to Saudi Arabia, Maduekwe had unilaterally changed both the mission of the team and its itinerary.

Meanwhile, the time Maduekwe had bought for Team Turai was being taken advantage of. Thus, by the time the FEC delegation arrived in Saudi Arabia, Turai had succeeded in packaging Yar’Adua into an air ambulance and left for Abuja. The Ministers—besides Maduekwe—were shocked, and found themselves scampering back to Nigeria early this morning.

Yar’Adua’s arrival was a dramatic display of desperation and power-grab by his wife and 10 other acolytes who have vowed never to allow Goodluck Jonathan to be President even for one day.
Their plan is to use Yar’Adua’s “presence” to commit as a trump card to ensure that Jonathan’s tenure does not gain any traction, and it has not escaped Nigerians that this morning’s statement by the presidency did not once refer to Jonathan in his acting capacity. An e-mail heralding Yar’Adua’s return, which was sent by Turai and partly written in Hausa to his foot soldiers shows that she was having difficulties reaching some of them. This is probably because she had announced to them that her ticket to power and privilege, Yar’Adua, would be back in 10 days, but she was six days early!

Several sources in Abuja have told Saharareporters that the game has changed and that Turai has fully taken charge of the government, a situation that seems confirmed by Jonathan’s announcement that she will meet with her this evening. Our sources also say that she is on a mission of vengeance and her co-kitchen cabinet members are no longer hiding their confidence and pre-eminence. And to demonstrate their confidence, the former Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondokaa, is said to be returning from self-exile in a matter of days, a kitchen cabinet source told Saharareporters.

Tension is high amongst government ministers as rumors circulate that their replacement would happen in the fullness of time.

Meanwhile, no one has seen or heard from Yar’Adua officially since his secretive return early this morning except the snippet of controlled information passed on to diplomats claiming that Yar’Adua was only resting because of the long flight and another group claiming that they saw him walk into the Ambulance or descend from the air Ambulance by himself.

The National Assembly is keeping mum as to how they interprete Yar’Adua’s return in view f their resolutions installing Jonathan as **Acting President, but a highly-placed lawmaker told Saharareporters that Yar’adua’s return early today was to disrupt the Wednesday FEC meeting that might have declared him incapacitated if he had not returned.

Tensions are understandably high in government circles, with the definite possibility of a coup in the air. Several Saharareporters sources seem to feel the tension, as they speak in whispers. But a military coup, as opposed to today’s civilian version by Turai, could be expensive for Nigeria. Niger Delta militants and some Igbo groups told Saharareporters today that should they hear those two words, “Fellow Nigerians,” by which coups are usually announced, they may not be a part of Nigeria as it is currently known.

unfortunately, i am unable to read every post here before posting mine.
However, a few things are certain;
- this scenario we all thought was a small matter and as in usual manner decided t o leave in God's hands seems to be heading to engulf the country in its entirety.
- The docility of Jonathan that often intelligent persons like Beaf tried to convince us was tactical intelligence will be his greatest undoing. in the present scheme of things, he will be taking orders from an illiterate house wife.
- If only we learn our lessons, we will begin to take elections serious and guard our votes and right to vote with our lives. If only we took the last election serious this slowpoke called Yar Adua and his docile vice would have no business around Aso rock and this illiterate Turai who can barely make a coherent sentence let alone writing one would be no where near holding the destiny of a nation to ransom.
If only a our politicians had the ability to see beyond their selfish interests, collectively they would have nipped this shameful crisis in the bud long ago and our psyche as a nation would not be traumatized and brutalized by these barbarians in this manner.Instead, most sat on the fence waiting for the pendulum to swing to enable them pitch their tents where their pockets will be better lined.
- Having dithered in the face of this monumental disgrace, the politicians have opened a pandora box and the genie has been let out.
- make no mistake, no one, i mean absolutely no one knows for sure how this will play out.The worst is very, very possible.Especially when you are dealing with an unsophisticated bunch like these.

Believe in you? Who do you think you are? A god?

Who wants or has that kind of emotional investment in a distant golfer? We don't believe in you and we never have. This isn't an insult. Why would we? We don't know you. We don't expect anything except golf from you. The rest is surely irrelevant to us. You are not that important to almost all of us. We have our own lives going on. We don't hang on your every move.

Tiger may inspire you to play better golf but his job on earth was never to set you an example of how to live your life, even though he was apparently seen by many corporations and indeed by himself, as being exactly that. Wrong. The exact same thing goes for high-profile footballers who are dragged through the press for their 'indiscretions'.

This is part of the industry of hysterical celebrity culture which has made some of the public think such people should be other than mere mortals. In this world they are 'icons' and 'role models' and 'ambassadors' whereas you and I know that they're just Hot blokes with money and endless temptation.

The six-man team of ministers that was last week raised by the Council of Ministers to visit Saudi Arabia is travelling to the country, but not to see the ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua. Their mission is rather to thank the Saudi king for his generosity towards their employer.

Foreign affairs minister Ojo Maduekwe confirmed to State House correspondents on Monday that the ministers’ mission was not to ascertain the state of the president’s health.

Mr. Yar’Adua left the country on November 23 last year for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia for an ailment his personal physician, Salisu Banye, described as pericarditis. He has not been seen in public since and has not received any visitor from Nigeria except his wife, Turai.

The ministers’ trip was rescheduled from Monday morning to evening due to what Mr. Maduekwe called a “normal issues of process.” The Foreign affairs minister also said the Federal Executive Council delayed its decision on Mr. Yar’Adua because it “did not know the president’s trip would last that long.”

‘We come with thanks’

On the purpose of this visit, he emphasised that his team will only be thanking the Saudi king for taking care of Mr. Yar’Adua.

“We will be expressing our deep appreciation to the King of Saudi Arabia for the excellent and generous attention the government and people of Saudi have given to our president, who unfortunately has been away for almost three months now for medical treatment, and it’s enough reason for a strong team from the government to go,” he said. “We didn’t know that this thing would last two weeks, and it’s close to the third month. We couldn’t have done it much earlier because we thought it was just for a few weeks, but it’s entering the third month. So we felt there is need to be on record. We don’t want it to be on record that when our president comes back, that for the three months he was there we didn’t go to Riyadh to thank the king. It is better to go physically to do the thanking. We can write a letter to thank him, but this is the king of Saudi Arabia and nothing less than what we are doing is adequate, that’s all.”

Mr. Maduekwe explained that the team could not travel earlier because of the arrangements it had to make.

“We are leaving in the next few hours,” he said late last night. “You don’t fly into other people’s countries without getting all the facility clearance. There are things to be sorted out. Remember the request was made close to weekend, and the offices opened on Sunday. Your request to come into a country is received, is processed and we have a very good relations with the Kingdom and there is no problem and our desire to be there is accepted.”

He said the team received its travel papers close to midnight on Sunday. “So, we couldn’t continue because we have to get the people on the delegation to know. You don’t just tell them five minutes to the time that you have got to leave. So there is no problem and the Saudi have responded to our request very promptly, with a lot of speed,” he said.

What’s going on?

The decision to send a delegation to Saudi Arabia for an update on Mr. Yar’Adua’s health in the first place had generated mixed feelings, considering that previous efforts failed.

Mr. Maduekwe, however, said the ministers’ trip would not suffer the same fate. “We are not going as private citizens; we are going there as government officials and on the basis of reciprocity, like if the Saudis come to Nigeria they will be properly received at the airport. So, when we go, we will be properly received at the airport,” he said.

He added that more details will be released when the team returns from the trip.

He however made it clear that Nigerians should not expect that the team will be coming back with report on the president’s health status. “We are not a medical team. We are not a medical panel,” Mr. Maduekwe said; adding that the presence of the minister of health does not make the team a fact finding one.

He said: “The fact that he is the minister of health does not make him a member of a medical panel. An engineer can be minister of health; even a lawyer like me can be minister of health. The only position in the executive council, which by constitutional provision requires a particular profession to head that ministry, is that of the office of attorney general; it must be a lawyer. The fact that the minister of health is on this team does not automatically mean that he is going there as a medical doctor.

“The purpose of this visit is exactly what I have told you: to express appreciation to the King of Saudi Arabia and also express our solidarity with the first family and register our prayers and the best wishes for the rapid recovery of the president and of course give assurances that under the dynamic leadership of the acting president, Goodluck Jonathan, governance is going on. The Executive Council remains focused, united and that every issue whether it is infrastructure, health care or education or even diplomacy has been proceeding normally.”

He also said the trip will not last a week. “We leave tonight and we are not going to be there all week. As soon as we carry out the purpose of our going there, we start coming back,” he said.

Has someone seen the president?

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Abdulla Aminchi, said in an interview in Jeddah on Monday that he has seen the president, adding that the previous failure to see Mr. Yar’Adua had been based on the decision of the medical team attending to him.

Mr. Aminchi said he visited Mr. Yar’Adua last Saturday and that the condition of the president, who has not been seen in public for three months, was improving after treatment for a heart ailment.

“I saw him the day before yesterday , He’s really feeling better now,” Mr. Aminchi said.

In the last few weeks, several delegations to see the president have been turned back. A delegation from the House of Representatives was not allowed to see Mr. Yar’Adua, while another led by the chairman of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, Vincent Ogbulafor, was also not allowed to see him.

The refusals were said to be at the behest of the Saudi authorities who have allegedly taken over the security of the president.

However, a source told NEXT last night that the ministers’ itinerary had to be changed because the Saudi King at the weekend sent a letter to the federal government informing it that Mr. Yar’Adua was not in a state to receive any visitors.

As a follow up to my earlier response, i find it intriguing and highly disheartening that the BBC measures the authenticity of that phone call by the integrity of a presidency that has elevated lies to a conscious policy of deceit and subterfuge.
These men and women who lack integrity and can go to any length to act true to character and admonish us on the need to pray while the ship glides inexorably to a stormy weather, have found a willing ally in the BBC.
These is a shame and must not be allowed to stand in civil and sane societies.
I however do not wish to address the argument of Mr Liman's 'experience' as it is irrelevant to the determination of the authenticity of that interview.
Once more, i call on the BBC to investigate the authenticity of that interview thoroughly and be very mindful of its role in present developments in Nigeria, so as not to be tools in the hands of political jobbers and the scum of this clime.

Regards,
