i do not want to sound like a pessimist but a few issues will not be out of order.
the crook called Odili tried something like this a while back in PH.months later the cars were turned to private cars and were intially bought up by politicians and their fronts who paid less than a tenth of the cost as down payment and ran away (literally) with the cars']
=
'we returned to status quo. no better transport and lots of cars meant to be taxis converted to private use.
the question about roads to accommodate is a very genuine question.
i have been in lagos in recent times and in my view, any solution that does not incorporate reducing the number of cars on the roads of lagos will only end up compounding the problem. adding an extra 1,200 cars on those roads i see in gidi is a serious matter.
Fashola is an intelligent and purposeful leader, i know he has covered most of the areas in his plan for this.so i wish him the best.

Enquirer, i am sorry but i disagree with you.
her passion is not in doubt but passion is just not enough.
she is ignorant of the thing she talks about and i am begining to think she has some hidden agendas and may not be as clean as claimed (i am cynical about office holders).
what do you mean establishment? she is part of it.
the whole rebranding thing smacks of hypocrisy of the highest order.
anyone who seeks to rebrand this country in sincerity, will either start from the top and try to rebrand the leadership (rulers) of this country and try and give the suffering masses a break.have we not tried. they rape us blind, yet we are still smiling.
rebranding indeed.
i prefer people like tony anenih and ibori who just chop and keep quiet not pretending to be what you are not.
if you cannot tackle those criminals, just keep quiet, afterall no be by force.
Politics › Re: Madam Rebranding Has Come Again by mbulela(op): 9:29am On May 28, 2009
my take on this matter.
this is what happens when you mix passion with ignorance.
this is a classic example.
how do you just wake up and announce tariff reduction like that? just by executive fiat?
these are going profit making business concerns not NGOs.
if you are so keen on tariff reduction, start with Mtel or whatever that crap is called that is owned by Nitel (or whatever name the crooks call them now).
everyone keeps saying that mobile rates are expensive in Nigeria, fine.
this is a global forum, take samples of opinions from people around the world, compare rates and you will find that relatively, it is not more than they charge in other countries.take a sample and see.
i am not a shareholder in MTN, Zain or Etisalat not Glo (although i wish), so their profits do not benefit me.
the issue is, what are the factors limiting tariff reduction?
to answer that question, what are the largest contributors of Opex in these companies?
how much does MTN for example spend on diesel monthly? (i will get back to the value later).
how much do they spend monthly repairing and replacing vandalised parts in BTS sites? (ask Marapco and you will be shocked).
how much is spent in importing and installing 2 generators per site and its maintenance?
these are the things that govt should try to address first, then ask for a reciprocal reduction in tariffs.
it is a simple economical fact that monopolistic competitive firms set price at a level to maximize profit.if some of these issues are looked into, costs will reduce and the price needed to maximize profit will reduce. it is not rocket science.
before anyone raises it, there are issues with the quality of service and NCC can still do more in that regard.
some progress has been made but more can be made on that front.
why will NCC support her cause? the man at the helm of affairs there is a professional and understands the business of telecommunication.he does not need to run his mouth like madam rebranding.you need to think and engage people before opening your mouth.
this woman needs a rebranding and very fast too.
just picking irrelevant fights all around the place is a bit irritating.

Akunyili: NCC’s Not in Support of Tariff Reduction

Minister for Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili, has said that the national telecommunications regulatory body, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has not shown its support for tariff reduction.
Tariff reduction was one of the promises made by Akunyili when she assumed duties as a minister in December 2008.
According to her, "I promise Nigerians that at the end of January 2009, operators in the telecommunication industry- MTN, Glo, Zain and other companies will reduce their tariffs. Nigerians are not satisfied with the quality of service and the tariffs that they are paying for such services."
Akunyili stated that the non-cooperation of the Commission to actualise this dream is aimed at embarrassing and ridiculing her by the authorities involved.
"I am not receiving support from the regulator on this matter. You are making me say what I do not want to say. There were sponsored write- ups against me. I started feeling sorry for myself , so I started calling all these providers one by one. They were giving me commitments. Even as they were doing so, you can see that people are afraid of their direct bosses.
"I begged them not to make me an object of ridicule since I have openly promised Nigerians that by the end of January, tariffs will be reduced. I am really scared of being entangled with what I do not know about," she said.
The minister disclosed this in her Radio House office while fielding questions from members of the House Committee on Communication, who had come for the yearly oversight function of the ministry.
Akunyili who , among other things, clarified issues on the rural telephony's connectivity and transfer of ownership, said: "We felt that there was a lot of grievance on the part of the companies that took part in the bidding.”
Since President Yar'Adua approved the companies and said that we should follow due process, we contacted the Attorney- General's office to look into the results of the tender. We have not issued letters of contract to the winners yet because we want to be sure that we are doing the right thing. Since then, the report has been on the Presidentís desk."
Responding, House Committee Chairman , Dave Salako , said that the Committee was not happy with the way they were treated at the Ministry. He claimed that they were kept waiting for long time on end, saying: "The re- branding initiative should begin in the Ministry."Akunyili , however, apologised on behalf of the Ministry for the delay.

Politics › Re: Yar’adua Tips Lamido Sanusi For CBN Governor by mbulela: 8:23pm On May 25, 2009
sartorius:
What set the beginning of Mr. Lamido’s name coming into touch with as well as popularity in the Nigeria’s corporate business circle, banking industry in particular, was when he first took an appointment with the defunct Icon Limited (Merchant Bankers) in the mid eighties. Lamido’s hard work, resilience and exceptional dedication to his duties paved his way to rising to the position of the Area Manager, Kano. His desire and unflinching commitment to knowledge and its continued pursuit, informed his voluntary resignation from the then Icon Limited in order to pursue higher education in the far away Khartoum, Sudan. Among the many experiences he gained while in the Icon Limited include; financial advisory services, debt conversion, credit and marketing knowledge and its applications.
After Lamido’s successful further studies in Sudan, United Bank for Africa (UBA) searched for him and appointed him its Principal Manager II in the Risk Management Division of the bank in the month of May, 1997. As usual with Lamido, his managerial expertise and being time bound in discharging his duties in this division made him rose up to the position of the Principal Manager I in January, 1998, and its Assistant General Manager (AGM), that same year. According to a source in the UBA, Lamido proposed and spearheaded the establishment of the Group Risk Department of the bank. He was appointed to head it and tasked with the responsibility of transforming the previous Credit Risk Division into an Enterprise Risk Management Sector of the bank.
Lamido’s impressive performance and rich profile in credit risk management left the First Bank Nigeria Plc with no better choice, than to invite him and appoint him its Executive Director Risk Management. “Dan halas” meaning “genuine son in Hausa” did not disappoint the management of this Elephant Bank (as it is widely known and called across the country). He opened the treasure of his wealth of experience acquired over the years and appropriately applied them in discharging his duties in this post. He, within a short time, reformed the bank’s risk management structure by breaking it into four departments; Operations Risk Department, Market Risk Department, Credit Analysis and Processing Department and Credit Monitoring and Control Department.
Sanusi Lamido’s golden cap of success in the First Bank before his new appointment to lead it, was taking the credit risk management profile of the bank to an unprecedented level, through effective and maximum utilization of the natural disposition of all the staff under his control.
On the educational side of his life, Lamido is a 1981 graduate of Economics from the famous West African University, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. Before then, he satisfactorily attended St. Annes Primary School, Kakuri, Kaduna, and the prestigious Kings College Lagos between the years 1973 – 1977. Not too long after his graduation, Lamido went back to ABU for his Post Graduate Studies. Between the years 1991 – 1997, he was at the International University of Africa, Khartoum, Sudan, where he first studied Arabic before obtaining a second Bachelor’s Degree, this time in Islamic Law.
From the beginning of his banking career to date, Lamido has attended numerous in service training courses both in Nigeria and in the over seas. His mastery of Credit Risk Management knowledge made him to be the first choice of organizers of public forum that has to do with business risk management both locally and abroad.

I have long stopped being impressed by CVs of Nigerian's in the corridor of power. at the end of the day, it never tallies.
all the Dora Akunyilis and Olusegun Adeniyi had seemingly enviable Cvs before they sold their souls for the mediocrity called Yar Adua's govt.
look at their performance now.
I just hope Mr Lamido sorts out this forex issue and try and get govt to stop depleting foreign reserves in the name of fiancing budget deficit that will have no effect on GDP.
those are my only 2 prayers.

i really wonder when we will have an independent CBN governor who will run just tailor monetary policies to suit aso rock.

kshow1:
@ poster: it is nearly imposible for money to be withdrawn from your account with your ATM card except there is a compromise somehow.
1. your ATM card was used by someone who has access to your card and PIN.
2. The card holder has released card details to scammers who usually send mails to the suspects to reveal to details cos they are upgrading the software.
3. The card holder have planned with a third party to use card, then go back to the bank to logde a complain.
4. The card holder have decided to defraud him/herself by withdrawing and going back to complian to the bank that money has been withdrawn from his/her account.
5. A bank official might have compromise your card by having all your card details.

All these are statement of facts cos i was once a head of operations in a nigerian bank.

ensure you follow up on them with the investigation cos the culprit might be someone you know.

Good luck.
In the case i narrated above, the act was perpetrated about 25 mins after he used the PHB atm near the wharf.
2ndly the alert said the 20k* 5 was withdrawn in lagos at Zenith bank, VI.
the card was in his possession.
so that rules out option 1,3 and 4.
i am also doubtful about option 2 cos the timing between the fraud and his own usage of the card does not seem coincidental.
if they were the type of scammers you are referring to, they did not need to wait for him to use the card before striking.
I have a sneaky feeling that this group of scammers have a mole in the bank.

i was just asking a question because their seems to be an aggression directed at someone.

i might be an exception but i use it often.
whether in Nigeria or out of the country, i have had regular transactions with Nipost on the average, twice a month in the last 6 years.
Have i been disappointed? a bit.
Has any of my stuff been missing? never.although once, i had an go to the mail warehouse myself after the postman told my folks i had a couple of letters in their warehouse but he was not sure he will deliver them as i was not dropping 'something for him'. i went and found 2 undelivered magazines.
on an occasion, i posted foreign foreign currency to address in Nigeria.it arrived intact and in less than 2 weeks (it was posted from Europe)
there was noticeable difference when that postmaster general that died in one of the air mishaps years back, was there.
after his death, as a regular user, from afar i could see the difference he made.things have deteriorated since he died but they are no way near as bad as they were.
truth is, postal service is bad, the world over.they are mostly govt agencies and their services are typical of govt services.
the summary is that i use Nipost and it is no way as bad as it is made out to be.In my opinion.

rubbish generalization. years after graduating from a couple of good schools (by any standard), i still make mistakes and use spell check on MS Word and my email.
so i wonder how that makes me a bad graduate?
their are genuine problems with the nigerian educational system, issues like an excessive emphasis on cramming and very little real knowledge,
a lack of updated knowledge by the teaching staff, ill structured system, lack of qualified teachers, prevalence of short cuts to good grades and admission of persons who have no business being in universities.
these are some of the genuine problems and issues that warrant tears not misspelling 'graduate'.
