The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the immediate and indefinite suspension of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Chairperson for the Edo State Police Command, Mrs. Helen Atekha Odemwingie. The Force equally decried the illegal use of police uniforms, kits and accoutrements by non-police individuals and groups. According to a statement by the acting Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday, the suspension is coming on the heels of a trending picture of the PCRC chairperson and other members at a function held at the Edo State Police Command wherein the PCRC members were seen wearing black uniforms similar to that of the Nigeria Police Force. The uniforms were worn with accompanying insignias and various inscriptions which contravene the provisions of section 214{1} of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and section 101 of the Police Act, 2020. In line with the extant law, the IGP hereby warns that henceforth, any individual who adorns themselves illegally in police uniforms would be made to face the full wrath of the law. Similarly, the IGP has ordered the police disciplinary units particularly the Force Provost Marshal, the IGP X-Squad and Monitoring Unit to clamp down on persons who engage in the illegal sales of police uniforms, kits and accoutrements, outside of police approved stores and the office of the Quartermaster.

THE ORIGIN OF LAGOS When Nigeria was governed on the basis of tribe Northern (Hausa), Western (Yoruba) and Eastern (lgbo) regions and the colonial Lagos older than Nigeria itself was being claimed as a part of the Yoruba Westem region, by virtue of its location and Yoruba origin with reference to its Benin (Edo) royalty as far back as late 17th century and the American and Caribbean ongins of the descendants of the Ologbowo and the Popo Aguda (Brazilian) returnees of the 1840s. of course, original Lagosians of the time challenged the Lagos belongs the West theory; successfully proved the independence of the old Lagos (gede be L' eko wa) not only stopped the attempt to merge Lagos with Westem Nigena but also got Lagos State as one of the first twelve states of Nigeria created in 1967 Since 1967, cosmopolitan Lagos has moved from being the capital of Nigeria to a mega city of excellence which now sets the pace of political, social and economical development more than it has ever done in the past. This is because, the ongin of Lagos has been influenced by mot only the (Idejo) chieftaincy, the Benin (Edo) Oba Ado royalty, the civilized and educated Saro (Olowogbowo) and Brazilian (Popo Aguda) returnees of the 1840s, the Tapa (Bida/Nupe), the Black Americans and the Caribbean (artisans of the early 19" century Lagos). These lots constitutes the force that built up Original Lagos (Eko Akoko) before the cessation of the colony of Lagos to the British crown in 1861, long before the creation of the British protectorate of Nigeria in 1914. The original Lagosians established family compounds and business centres as far back as early 17th century, e.g Iga Aromire, Iga Iduganran, and the agboles (compounds) of the four original settlements Isale Eko, Olowogbowo, Oko Faji and Popo Aguda. These settlements of Lafiaji/lkoyi, Ebute Meta/Yaba were added during the colonial days. By virtue of the above stated, original Lagos (Eko Akoko) produced Nigeria’s first modern day professionals such as lawyer Sapara-Williams (1880), Doctor J. K. Randle, Engineer Herbert Macaulay, Journalist Kitoyi Ajasa, Chartered Accountant Akintola Williams e.t.c all of them from the early Olowogbowo settlements. In my own opinion, those who fabricate the very recent theory that Oba Ashipa was a Yoruba from lsheri instead of a Benin Prince from the Oba of Benin (Edo State) were mischievously, politically motivated to historically confirm the story of politicians of the 1940s who claim that Lagos belongs to the West; Yoruba/West of the regional Nigeria. The then Lagos politicians of the Action group Party controlled Western Nigeria went as far as to claim that some well known families of Lagos originated from Oyo, Ekiti, Ijebu, Egba, ljesha etc. in order to qualify them for membership of the Western Nigeria house of assemble or the Nigerian senate needless to say some got their fingers burnt when they were challenged by indigenes of the cities claimed in the 1940s. |

Senate has asked the Nigerian Army to vacate a large expanse of land currently being occupied by its Signals Barracks in the Apapa area of Lagos State. The Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions’ Committee of the upper chamber at its sitting ruled that the contentious 20.652 hectares of land rightly belonged to the Kazuma Shipping Company Limited, based in Lagos. Chairman of the Senate panel, Senator Ayo Akinyelure gave the verdict brought before him by the law firm of Messrs Muiz Banire & Associates. A copy of the petition signed by Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN), and dated November 21, 2021, was made available to journalists by the panel. In the petition, Banire explained that the land was originally owned by the family of the late John Saint-Matthew Daniels, from whom the Kazuma Shipping Company Limited, bought it in 2002. He alleged that the Nigerian Army encroached on it despite the fact that it was outside their barracks. He said the owners of the land commenced series of litigations against the Nigerian Army and got favourable judgments at the High Court, Appeal Court and Supreme Court. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria explained that the Supreme Court while delivering judgment in Suit No SC/68/71, had declared that the land, which borders the Nigerian Army Signal Barracks, Apapa, Lagos State, belongs to the children of the late John Saint-Matthew Daniels. Banire said, ” After the judgment, officers of the Nigerian Army began to trespass on the land by depriving the original owners, access to the large expanse of land on the pretext that the said land belong to the Nigerian Army. “Upon a petition to the relevant authorities by our our client’s predecessors and in compliance with the said judgment, the Chief of Army Staff vide reference No. NA/412/A, dated April 3, 2002, directed the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Signal, Arakan Barracks, Apapa, Major General S.E. Asemota, to formally hand over the parcel of land back to our client’s predecessors-in-title.” Banire further explained that the Daniel’s family formally sold the land to the Kazuma Shipping Company Limited after the handover in 2002. He said the company spent N400m to sand fill the land after purchase between 2002 and 2009. He, however, lamented that men of the Nigerian Army, allegedly disregarded the court judgements and invaded the land in 2009 and chased away the workers who were doing the sand filling. Banire said: “upon several outcry and complaints, the Chief of Army Staff directed through a reference vide No.NA/COAS/G4/67/1 dated August 15, 2011, that the Nigerian Army should again, hand over the parcel of land to our clients predecessor-in-title. “On November 30, 2011, the Nigerian Army, represented by Brigadier General S.J. Davies, the Commander of 45 Division Engineer, conducted another handover ceremony.” The Senior lawyer further lamented that men of the Nigerian Army did not respect the handover which was directed by its superior officers by erecting perimeter fence around the land with a signpost that it belonged to the Nigerian Army. He therefore implored the Senate to intervene in the matter. The representative of the Nigerian Army at the Senate panel session, Lt. Col. M. Biambo, however told the senators that the case was subjudice because a suit instituted by the Army was already pending before a Lagos High Court on the matter. Members of the panel including Senators Uche Ekwunife, Smart Adeyemi and Sam Egwu rejected the submission of the Nigerian Army. They insisted that the court of lesser jurisdiction could not upturn a verdict of the apex court. Chairman of the panel, Senator Ayo Akinyelure therefore ruled that the Nigerian Army should vacate the land immediately. He said the report of his panel would be be submitted to the Senate in plenary after which he said the verdict would be communicated to the highest authorities of the Nigerian Army |

The Nigerian Army has refuted the reports that two officers connived with internet fraudsters (aka Yahoo boys) and collected illegal returns from soldiers at checkpoints in Edo State. Soldiers at the 4 Brigade, Benin, Edo State, had protested the alleged criminal activities of two officers; Lt Col Emmanuel Ayegba, and Captain Eddyson Okakah, who connived with internet fraudsters, popularly called Yahoo boys, to make huge sums of money. They were also allegedly involved in other illegal activities, which they denied. Ayegba is the Commander of Operation Wabazigan, a security outfit set up by the Governor Godwin Obaseki administration in Edo State, while Okakah is the Officer-in-Charge (O/C) of Military Police at 4 Brigade, Benin. The aggrieved soldiers pleaded with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya, to intervene, in order to restore sanity to the 4 Brigade and the entire army. However, Captain Yemi Sokoya, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, dismissed the report on Tuesday, in a statement, noted that the report was “bereft of truth and therefore entirely misleading”, saying the report is nothing short of an attempt to spite the image of the Brigade and by extension the Nigerian Army. “The unsubstantiated allegations could be viewed as an attempt to defame the Brigade, despite the selfless efforts of its troops in ensuring security in Edo and the contiguous states. “The Brigade exercises zero tolerance on troops engaged in activities detrimental to service discipline as defaulters are always sanctioned accordingly,” the statement revealed. |

The Kaduna residence of popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi is on fire. POLITICS NIGERIA cannot yet determine the cause of the inferno, but we can report that the part of the residence on fire is the area housing the female students. Efforts are ongoing to extinguish it. Gumi is the current Mufti and Mufassir (Explainer of the Holy Quran) at the Kaduna central mosque Sultan Bello. Due to the insecurity experienced in northern Nigeria, Gumi was negotiating with bandits and kidnappers ‘to lower their arms for a safety Nigeria’. He often enter the forests, reaching out to their various bandits camps in their hideouts to embrace peace. He travelled to Katsina, Zamfara and Niger states, urging bandits to stop attacking people. However, when the gazette proscribing bandit groups in the northern part of Nigeria as terrorists was made on November 25, 2021, the cleric stopped interfering in their matter. |

The Nigerian Army (NA) has been notified of a publication by Sahara Reporters alleging that personnel of the Nigerian Army lamented delay in payment of their January salary, with many paid peanuts, while Generals feed fat. This report is not only misleading, but a grandiose attempt to incite personnel against established precept of discipline in the NA. For avoidance of doubt, since the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya assumed command, he has prioritized the welfare of officers, soldiers and their families, including ensuring prompt payment of salaries, allowances and all statutory entitlements to personnel. Therefore, the allegation suggesting delay and non implementation of new salary increase is a reckless falsehood in all its intent and purposes. It must be emphasised, that over the years, the NA has built a reputation and unbroken record of prompt payment of salaries and allowances. Officers and soldiers get their monthly salaries and allowances as at when due. Additionally, if there is any envisaged delay, troops are usually communicated through the internal communication mechanism. It is therefore instructive to state that for the month of January, all salaries and allowances have been paid. The attempt to stir up discontent and whip up sentiment with regards to the unsubstantiated and baseless report that Generals feed fat is an outrageous frivolity. It is an attempt to incite personnel against the institution and cause disaffection in the ranks and should therefore be outrightly discountenanced. The NA wishes to call on all credible media to distance themselves from the apparent unprofessional and disgraceful yellow journalism practiced by some media channels and purveyors of fake of news. Our troops are in high spirit and would not be distracted by any mischievous submission by agent provocateurs. ONYEMA NWACHUKWU Brigadier General Director Army Public Relations 4 February 2022

A hawker has melted the hearts of many after he was spotted giving out freebies to prisoners in a correctional service vehicle. It appears the prison bus was taking them to jail after being sentenced, and while in traffic, a hawker felt the need to assist in his own little way. He gave out some of his money to the prisoners hopefully so that they can be able to purchase some necessary items while inside as is done in some facilities. A motorist who noticed him captured the moment on tape and it moved people to emotions.
