A little Matths: as at 2015, the minimum wage was 18k, & dollar exchange was average N180. That means Nigerians were receiving $100 as minimum wage. Fast forward to 2018, de minimum wage is still 18k, & de exchange rate is N360 average. That means, Nigerians are receiving $50 as minimum wage. Going by de calculation, de minimum wage should be N36k+ periodic variation of at least 20%. That is de total minimum wage should be N43200. Our govt is a fraud!
Decent analysis, but you missed out balancing these figures out with the price of oil at these two period and how difficult it has been for a lot of State Governments to pay the current minimum wage, with the Federal Governmental even needing to bail some states out for this reason.

That being said, if the masses are going to suffer, let's all suffer. The allowance of our Federal Legislators at least needs serious review; the current way things are is unfair.

Nairaland / General / Re: Something Is Generally Wrong With Nigerians!!! by mechouk1: 9:23am On Oct 22, 2018
Your post is really straight to the point and your observations are all correct. The behaviour you described is what Ex President IBB called "the Nigerian Factor". The Nigerian Factor was considered by his Military Government in things that involved planning and application of models and systems that had worked perfectly in other countries to Nigeria. They usually didn't work in this country unless tailored to our environment.

Hence, I am not a proponent of democracy as practiced abroad at this time because we abuse it. I am also not a proponent of Human Rights as practiced in the more civilised parts of the world. It doesn't work for us currently, as is evident around us.

The long and better fix would be a revamping of our educational system, with mass sensitisation of the populace. This will take at least a generation.

The quick fix would be a patriotic, but strict, detribalised and BRUTAL military regime for 10 to 15 years!

I know most won't agree with me, but remember that we are a people that have and are constantly glorifying and choosing corruption over more noble ideas and deeds.

For example, in the PDP Presidential Primaries amongst the candidates was Dr Datti Ahmed who was (in my opinion) the best candidate for a progressive Nigeria. He polled only 5 votes because he couldn't make "Dollar Rain".

Religion / Re: Pastor Shaves A Lady, Removes Her Panties During Deliverance In Church (Photos) by mechouk1: 2:15pm On May 01, 2018
Pharaoh001:
AGAINST WHO ARE 'CAN' PROTESTING IN CHURCHES ON SUNDAY?

Almost all the newspapers, electronic media and online news portals today were awash with the news of the arrest of the kingpin or mastermind of (most) of the killings that have been happening in Benue State under the cover of "Fulani Herdsmen", and the man is reported as a confirmed "Boko Haram" escapee who got appointed as Special Adviser to Governor Samuel Ortom!

Whatever motivated Governor Samuel Ortom to appoint him as his Special Adviser cannot be divined by me here, but it is very easy for me to wager that the killings in Benue State have been very profitable for four groups of people:

1. Governor Samuel Ortom who has nothing to show for his 2019 reelection campaign except to provoke sympathy votes on the basis of killings in his state by "Fulani Herdsmen"!

2. Closely following Governor Samuel Ortom in the benefits list are the " Burial Business Contractors" (BBC) in Benue State! There are allegations that mass burials have become a very profitable business in Benue State, especially in the wake of the well staged mass burial of the "71 coffins" said to be victims of "Fulani Herdsmen" attacks in January this year. It's alleged that Governor Samuel Ortom spent about 250 million naira for that particular mass burial. When you do your simple maths by dividing 250 million by 71 coffins you will know how much it costed to bury just one coffin!

So you can easily see that these Burial Business Contractors (BBC) will want this "profitable" business to continue just like those who sell coffins on the roadsides always want people to die so that they can sell!

3. The third group on the benefits list are the chronic ethno-religious bigots who will always clutch at any straw or any sinking debris to let off steam temporarily by venting their bigotry and lies against President Muhammadu Buhari as the architect and head of the killings in their "Christian Middle Belt". To this group, the killings by "Fulani Herdsmen" in Benue State or the Middle Belt did not start 9 years ago but started immediately Buhari became President in May 2015! And to them also, if Fulanis are butchered in Taraba or Adamawa or burnt alive in the same Benue State it doesn't matter, and neither does it matter that people (Muslims) are also being killed by the same killer squad in Zamfara, Katsina and Jigawa states!

4. The fourth group on the benefits list is the marriage alliance of the PDP and CAN.... In this instance, CAN here represents the National Association of PDP Pastors (NAPDPP) whose footsoldiers are members of Group 3 above! Having been beaten mercilessly and disgraced out of power in the 2015 presidential election, anything such as these killings will be exploited by them as a payback to those who disgraced them and deprived them of the juicy flow of stolen public funds!

So, I ask CAN: with the facts coming to light regarding the killings in Benue State and possibly other so called Middle Belt areas, who are they protesting against? Hypocrisy or self-deceit or self-delusion or all of that?

By the way, when "Boko Haram" bombs were blowing off hundreds of thousands of Nigerians to death, and the insurgents were capturing city after city; town after town, and village after village in northern Nigeria between 2012 to 2015, was CAN not aware to organize any protest against those mass killings or was the soul of CAN dead at that time and only got resurrected now?

You bet, these were the kind of people John the Baptist looked in the eye and said "You brood of vipers...."

Most of the comments on this thread really sadden me with their unpatriotic and etho-tribal undertones. A soldier died for our country albeit a "st**hole". These soldiers would rather be elsewhere than in the forests and bushes where they currently are. They have families aand loved ones and are probably also not happy about the state of the country, our country. If soldiers and other personnel of our armed forces were to be withdrawn, then you would know what insecurity really is. If Nigeria is a zoo, we made it so, and by extension we must be animals as is evident from our daily conduct. We make such comments and then dress up and enter our Churches and Mosques to pray. God is truly merciful.

Politics / Re: South-East Governors Ban IPOB Activities (Photos) by mechouk1: 7:41am On Sep 16, 2017
Throwback:
I have always said it.

IPOB is nothing.

The SouthEast already has a recognised and constitutional democratic leadership who can make demands and even cry out to UN or US.

IPOB is just a pressure group that ought to first win the approval and support of the constituted authority of the SouthEast who would then channel whatever demands to the national assembly and even file law suits as to the legality of their demands with respect to the Nigerian constitution.

Instead we had an animal with a loud mouth who was abusing everyone and intimidating fellow Igbos and even the Igbo leadership and threatening anarchy , then he will cry to the UN and US claiming victim.

All the referenced Scottish and Catalonian campaign for independence were/are championed by the recognised constitutional and democratic leadership of those regions in their current country.

Yet that half baked hunchback would be claiming UN convention, civil rights, and calling the country a zoo, when he himself is a fundamental illegality.

I repeat, no sane country will tolerate all the words that were coming out of Kanu against the country, the different tribes, the Army, the president. Yet this animal from the jungle continued to freely operate in a zoo which is a luxury not afforded in any European or American zoo.

But IPOB was a butterfly that thought itself a bird. Then came the continued use of outright stinking lies claiming Trump will give them Biafra, Putin will destroy Nigeria, bla bla bla.

Can IPOB manage a country? Can IPOB tolerate any dissenting opinion within Igbo land? Can IPOB have a diplomatic engagement with global agencies who might not agree with their demands only to call the leader of that agency an Afonja or Hausa goat?

Would IPOB not have attempted to promote Igbo purity by exterminating any impure Igbo amongst them. Would every Igbo not have had to rehearse his family history to recite on demand when accosted by the IPOB Nazi militia?

God punish the beast called Kanu. He is an animal who has no rights, and he will be exorcised from this world.

All IPOB terrorists and their sympathizers will be mercilessly run over.

As for SouthEast leaders, they did not learn anything from how the initial support of boko haram by the Northern elders, led to the destruction of the North East.

Like Sambisa, like Aba. Like NorthEast, Like SouthEast, Like Yusuf, like Kanu. In the end, the hate consumed growth and development.
This is absolutely well articulated and to the point. Well done!!! Every economic woe in our beloved country is being experienced by everyone regardless of tribe & has been caused by our past leadership also regardless of tribe. The politicians actively or passively support tribalism and ethnic divisiveness because it diverts attention from their crimes. The sad part is that our educational system has been so compromised that the youth largely find it difficult to figure this out for themselves; then comes Nnamdi Kanu, the cheap imp, to capitalise on this.
HE NEEDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!!!!!

The Nigerian democratic experiment is not going well at all. We have shown that we lack the maturity to practice true democracy; although that hardly exists anywhere in the world. The NYF's statement is well worded and intelligent, but most of us on Nairaland due to a laziness to read and a rush to be FTC would not read the full statement before commenting. My only grouse with the statement is their stating that they would not allow a Southern President in 2019. The truth is, nobody so far has won an election without the North. Nigeria has always played regional politics, with the exception of the annulled June 12 election in 1993. We have a chance to take our country and move it forward regardless of ethnicity or tribe if we stop the dangerous trend of hate speeches, etc. Otherwise, we may soon truly learn what it means to be marginalised when we are refugees in neighbouring African countries. Let's unite & build!
