Italian ex-interior minister Matteo Salvini has gone on trial in Sicily, accused of preventing a migrant boat from docking in August 2019. The right-wing politician denies kidnap and dereliction of duty charges. Prosecution witnesses include Hollywood actor Richard Gere, who was on board. Mr Salvini closed ports to rescue boats, leaving dozens of migrants saved from the Mediterranean stranded aboard a Spanish rescue vessel for three weeks in deteriorating conditions. He faces a maximum of 15 years in jail if convicted. On the opening day of the trial, the judge allowed all witnesses submitted by both sides to testify. They also include former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and members of his cabinet. But the defendant mocked Mr Gere’s presence. “I wonder if it’s serious that Richard Gere of Hollywood is going to testify about my behaviour at a trial,” he told journalists outside the court. Mr Gere had boarded the Spanish ship the Open Arms before it docked after 19 days at sea on the island of Lampedusa with nearly 150 migrants on board. Mr Salvini said he was defending his government’s “closed ports” policy aimed at stopping migrants from making the dangerous Mediterranean crossing. Migrants on the Sea But his blockade of the ship caused an outcry and a serious split in the coalition government at the time. His League party was in a coalition with the anti-establishment Five Star, but now he is an opposition MP. In July last year, the Senate voted to strip him of his parliamentary immunity. Mr Conte had called Mr Salvini “obsessed” with keeping migrants out of Italian ports. In 2019 the Open Arms charity filed a legal complaint against Mr Salvini’s block on their ship, which ended on 20 August. Media caption,Mr Salvini defended his actions in the Senate last year By that time, many of the migrants had already been allowed off the ship. The charity’s founder Oscar Camps told reporters outside the trial on Saturday that saving lives should not be politicized. “Rescuing people in the sea is no crime, it’s an obligation not only for the captain but also for all states,” he said. The court adjourned after several hours. A further hearing has been scheduled for 17 December https://uptownmediainc.com/salvini-goes-to-trial-over-migrant-rejection/

As part of our social responsibility, we will be giving out useful, life saving information to Nigerians, kindly help us, save lives by sharing important information. Kidnapping, which is the act of taking somebody away illegally and keeping them as prisoners or hostages, especially in order to get ransom or other benefits before they are released, is evidently giving us cause for concern now. Kidnapping is a serious offence. In fact, in some states of the federation, kidnapping is now considered a capital offence, that is, an offence that is punishable by death. As the Police and other critical stakeholders are doing everything humanly possible to combat it, frankmba.ng is on its own proffering a few tips on some of the ways not only to avoid being kidnapped but also on how to survive when you are unfortunately kidnapped. To avoid being kidnapped, you may consider adopting some of the following security tips: Do not work-out, drive, go to work or take children to school using the same route all the time especially where you have alternate routes. This is because felons may rely on your routines to track you down and look for a time when you are most vulnerable to strike. *Do not accept rides offered by strangers, because you would be at their mercy if they turn out to be kidnappers. Always let someone know your whereabouts or where you are going. Give the name and other useful information of the person you are going to meet, in case of any eventuality. *Do not accept drinks, gums, cigarettes, and food from anybody you are not familiar with. You could easily be drugged and taken hostage. Teach the children not to accept gifts from persons they are not familiar with. It is however important we do this with utmost care so as not to make our children become paranoid. Do not draw unnecessary attention to yourself, especially by making public donations or appearing flashy or spraying money carelessly at events. Note that even when musicians and praise-singers are praising you to high heavens during such events, they may unwittingly be attracting unscrupulous elements to you. The Nigerian Communications Commission on Friday alerted Nigerians of the existence of a new, high-risk and extremely-damaging, Malware called Flubot. Here are some things to know about Flubot: The android phone is vulnerable to the attack 1 – Flubot targets Android devices. Flubot “impersonates Android mobile banking applications to draw fake web view on targeted applications” and its goal transcends stealing personal data and essentially targets stealing of credit card details or online banking credentials. 2 – Circulated through text message FluBot is circulated through Short Message Service (SMS) and can snoop “on incoming notifications, initiate calls, read or write SMSes, and transmit the victim’s contact list to its control centre.” 3 – Pretends to be FedEx, DHL, Correos, and Chrome app This malware attacks Android devices by pretending to be “FedEx, DHL, Correos, and Chrome applications” and compels unsuspecting users to alter the accessibility configurations on their devices in order to maintain continuous presence on devices. 4 – Duplicates fake login screen The new malware undermines the security of devices by copying fake login screens of prominent banks, and the moment the users enter their login details on the fake pages, their data is harvested and transmitted to the malware operators’ control point from where the data is exploited by intercepting banking-related One Time Passwords (OTPs) and replacing the default SMS app on the targeted Android device. 5 – Spreads to other contacts Consequently, it secures admittance into the device through SMS and proceeds to transmit similar messages to other contacts that may be on the device it has attacked enticing them into downloading the fake app. https://uptownmediainc.com/how-to-avoid-flubot-android-malware/ |

A reader sent us this insightful story, quite interesting. The last 19 months has been a rollercoaster, anyone can attest to that. With our entire lives brought to a surprising stand still seemingly overnight by the COVID-19 virus, we had never had it like this before, at least in my life time, the fear of the unknown crept in, there will undoubtedly be some people reading this and beyond who contemplated the broader aspects of their lives and what was truly important to them. Being unable to see or visit family and friends for a long period of time caused sadness and loneliness, shops, malls and restaurants were shut, banks ran skeletal service (not full service), churches and mosques services were moderated online due to the covid-19 pandemic my story. After one month reality questions started to creep into my mind, is this the end of the world? how do we survive when we cant work and get paid? how will our family cope when all our resources run out? is the COVID-19 virus real? was it deliberate by world leaders to depopulate the world? was it an attack on Americas economy to bring it down, so China could control the world economy? since it originated from the Wuhan province in central China. At the same time, this period of reflection left plenty of room to consider our general health. What if we contract the virus? Will I be able to overcome it considering the already bad and failing health system in my country, to compound the issue resident doctors association were on strike to protest poor welfare for their members. British soul diva Adele on Friday released comeback single “Easy On Me”, in which she shares with the world details of the traumatic six years she has endured since last releasing a record. In that period, the 33-year-old megastar said she suffered a “year of anxiety” in which her marriage fell apart. While her voice has lost none of its power, the new single’s lyrics reveal a deeper vulnerability, with every chorus opening with the soaring refrain “go easy on me, baby” sung over a simple piano riff. The Benin Bronzes, some of Africa’s greatest treasures, were looted in 1897. After a chance encounter, two men made it their mission to return them. In 2004, Steve Dunstone and Timothy Awoyemi stood on a boat on the bank of the River Niger. The two middle-aged men, both police officers in Britain, were taking part in a journey through Nigeria, organized through the Police Expedition Society, and had reached the small town of Agenebode, in the country’s south. Their group brought gifts with them from British schoolchildren, including books and supplies. The local schools had been alerted in advance, and a crowd came down to the river banks to meet them; there was even a dance performance. It was a wonderful — if slightly overwhelming — welcome, Mr. Dunstone recalled. In the back of the crowd, Mr. Awoyemi, who was born in Britain and grew up in Nigeria, noticed two men holding what looked like political placards. They didn’t come forward, he said. But just as the boat was about to push off, one of the men suddenly clambered down toward it. “He had a mustache, scruffy stubble, about 38 to 40, thin build,” Mr. Dunstone recalled recently. “He was wearing a white vest,” he added. The man reached out his arm across the water and handed Mr. Dunstone a note, then hurried off with barely a word. That night, Mr. Dunstone pulled the note from his pocket. Written on it were just six words: “Please help return the Benin Bronzes.” A display of Benin Bronzes at the British Museum in London. The artifacts were looted by British troops in the 19th century and are now scattered worldwide. Credit…Lauren Fleishman for The New York Times At the time, he didn’t know what it meant. But that note was the beginning of a 10-year mission that would take Mr. Dunstone and Mr. Awoyemi from Nigeria to Britain and back again, involve the grandson of one of the British soldiers responsible for the looting, and see the pair embroiled in a debate about how to right the wrongs of the colonial past that has drawn in politicians, diplomats, historians and even a royal family. World Treasures The Benin Bronzes are not actually from the country of Benin; they come from the ancient Kingdom of Benin, now in southern Nigeria. They’re also not made from bronze. The various artifacts we call the Benin Bronzes include carved elephant tusks and ivory leopard statues, even wooden heads. The most famous items are 900 brass plaques, dating mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries, once nailed to pillars in Benin’s royal palace. A series of brass plaques are the most famous of the items known as the Benin Bronzes, but the looted hoard also includes items made from wood and ivory. Credit…Lauren Fleishman for The New York Times There are at least 3,000 items scattered worldwide, maybe thousands more. No one’s entirely sure. You can find Benin Bronzes in many of the West’s great museums, including the British Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. They’re in smaller museums, too. The Lehman, Rockefeller, Ford and de Rothschild families have owned some. So did Pablo Picasso. Their importance was appreciated in Europe from the moment they were first seen there in 1890s. Curators at the British Museum compared them at that time with the best of Italian and Greek sculpture. Today, the artifacts still leave people dumbstruck. Neil MacGregor, the British Museum’s former director, has called them “great works of art” and “triumphs of metal casting.” There’s one place, however, where few of the original artifacts are found: Benin City, where they were made.
