I thought Keshi played at the 90 AFCON. There were only two teams playing in the world cup from Africa as at 1990. What stopped Zambia from qualifying as one of the two teams? Back then, there were few strong teams unlike when Senegal qualified |

dk, i still insist that its in Africa we celebrate foreign coaches. England, Portugal, Russia, Turkey, Greece represent an inconsequential percentage of European teams. In Africa almost every team has a foreign coach. Of the 6 teams representing Africa at the mundial only Algeria has a local coach. Besides, if you look at the achievements, trophies, of these foreign coaches, you will understand why the likes of Italy, Holland, Germany would rather groom their local coaches. Scolari could only achieve a second place finish in the Euros on home soil. Hiddink couldnt qualify russia for the world cup, England were poor under Eriksson. Reheagal is about the only foreign coach that won something. As for the Zambian side we knocked out yes they were truly a great side. I still believe the Senegal team we met were stronger. No disrespect to that Zambian side, but if they were so good, they would have made it to the world cup. Keshi also played in that nations cup and was abroad at that time |
I knew this favourite talk was goin to unsettle Spain. They have never performed well under the favourites tag eg France 98, Euro 2000, 2009 Confedrations cup Spains problem is the lack of a plan B. Once you park the plane, they have no answer. They needed to be more direct and an earlier introduction of Fabregas and Torres who have experience of playing direct and swashbuckling football of the EPL would have helped by providing them with another option rather than having possesion endlessly. Jabulani played its part too. Can that beach ball stay down from anything above a metre? Anyways, i tip Spain to bounce back but will really damage their psyche and mental strength is one thing the La Furia Roja are not known for |
the Jabulani cant just stay down. any thing other than point blank range and its soaring over the bar. |
. |
Fabregas and Torres should start every game. They are more direct and pragmatic. |
i seriously think FIFA should start counting point. . . I think Spain will bounce back. They did in Euro 2000. They lost their opening game to Norway and returned with wins against Slovenia and Yugoslavia. Del Bosque has returned Spain to its underachieving years. Aragones is better coach. Iniesta was shite in this match. He should have been replaced with a more direct Fabregas. Fabregas and Torres are more direct because of the EPL! |
add messi to spains attack, what will be the answer? |
how is la-gay-back better than Amodu, no one's been able to answer. I saw Super Eagles worst performance ever on Saturday against Argentina where they had only one attempt at goal yet some people that will accept anything as far as it is from a white man are dancing and jubilating. A game where Lagerbacks game plan was to open the gates of our defence and resort to Enyeama's heroics. Some are even giving the time factor as an excuse. Was la-gay-back not aware of how much time we had before the world cup when he signed his contract? What did la-gay-back achieve with a Sweeden team that had Larsson, Ljunberg, Ibrahimovic and the likes? the farthest they went was the 2nd round of the world cup in 2002. very poor. For those that call that shambolic display against Argentina a good performance, check this link http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=264037&cc=3888&ver=global |
Fernandez and Sanchez are good players. These Chileans will go far |
game's started |
this game will be too latin. It will be like one of those Copa Libertadores matches. I would have given Chile a win but having seen what New Zealand did yesterday, i will go for a draw. Honduras have some good players; Maynor Figueroa, Wilson Palacios, David Suazo, not so sure about his fitness, i think they can hold their own against a Chilean side that finished 2nd and a point behind Brazil in the South American qualifiers. |
@ matinho keep lying to yourself. The technical SE you saw against Argentina could only manage a decent attempt at goal in a game where the they werent ultra defensive. How is La- gay-back better than Amodu? If you dont provide an answer, i'll have every reason to believe you are completely besotted by a white mans skin |
i think they use OPTA |
Brazil always have a rough start and whenever they begin with a 2-1 win, they play in the final Brazil 2 Scotland 1(France '98) Brazil 2 Turkey 1 (Korea Japan) Brazil will play in the final |
Okoro is a very good player. Its time they gave him a chance with SE |
I modified my post while you were posting. you can check it again |
Olympic football is a youth tournament. U-23. If its senior national teams then it would be Cameroon playing in the finals of the 2001 confederations cup, Senegal in the 2002 world cup, Ghana in the 2006 world cup and Egypt beating Italy at the last confederations cup. Besides, i said that the 90's played an important part in getting African football to where it is today and not at par with we have today. In as much as the 90's football was important, it was dominated by a few teams. In 2006, we had 4 new teams participating in the world cup. This couldnt have happened in the 90's even if FIFA increased the number slots for Africa. |
@texazzpete do you know that no team has defeated Mozambique at their home ground, Estadio Machaba, in 2 years. Even a full strength Ivorian could not notch up a win and what do you mean by 'Mozambique qualified us for the world cup'?Mozambique's coach, Mart Nooij, needed to qualify Mozambique for the nations cup or he would have been sacked. If they had lost he would have been sacked so they actually had a lot to play for |
the rise of African football was a slow and steady movement that started even before the 90's. I dont believe that African football is in a declining state. more than ever many teams have become relevant in the continent. That we've not to been able to repeat winning the Olympic gold in football is not enough to say our football is on the decline. Nigeria made it to the finals at the Beijing olympics, Ghana won the FIFA world youth championship in Egypt, not forgetting that they had a good outing in Germany 2006 on their world cup debut. |
Nigerians have consumed so much undeserved disparaging comments about Amodu that they just believe Amodu is not good without reason. He lost to Ghana? So. Nigeria played some wonderful soccer and were just unlucky not to have won. Is there a coach that has never lost? Russia lost to Slovenia in the world cup qualifiers play off, does that make Hiddink a bad coach? Spain lost to USA in the confed cup, i guess that makes Del Bosque a 'dumb' coach. |
Senegal in 2002 made it to the world cup quarter finals beating world champions France. Where were Senegal in the 90's. Even when they staged AFCON they were no where to be found. There are no minnows in African football anymore. We have seen teams like Togo, Ghana, Angola and even CIV play in the world cup. African football have moved from an era where a select few teams will have a walk in the park against other African sides. Now they have to properly for every match. African champions Egypt couldnt qualify for the world cup. They lost against some lowly rated sides in the qualifiers. Most recently, a full strength Portugal struggled to draw against Cape Verde. |
The selection aside, what was our game plan? Was it ultra defensive, gung ho, counter attack? We obviously had no game plan even seasoned espn analysts corroborate this view. The only game plan we had was for Etuhu and the back four to go to sleep and leave Enyeama to save us. We had only one shot on target and its not like we were ultra defensive. Lagerback obviously doesnt know anything about tactics |
Nigeria verdict: Surprisingly, given the tactically astute nature of Lars Lagerback, Nigeria failed to demonstrate any real game plan and looked to run out of ideas when they got the ball in the final third. Playing a zonal marking system against a side of Argentina's quality was suicidal and a shaky defence was fortunate not to have conceded more than one goal http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=264037&cc=3888&ver=global Nigeria approached the game against Argentina without a plan and this same Lagerback is better than Amodu? That game against should go down in history as our poorest ever |
you cant compare the level of African football two decades back to what it is today. True, there were some decent sides but they were very few. Today, almost every African side is good. |
Nigerians and their colonial mental set up |
unbelievable. Slovakia no try at all |
unbelievable. Slovakia no try at all |
The CIV team with Traore were okay compared to a Senegal side that had Tony Sylva, Fadiga, Papa Bouba Diop, Henri Camara, Diouf, etc. Why didnt that CIV team qualify for the world cup? Egypt's fielded an experimental side in the 90 nations cup. They were trying to build a team for the world cup. |
who scored Slovakia's 2nd goal. PHCN don f*** up |
Talking about reading a match, this what i found on a certain website Argentina's verdict: Displayed their undeniable attacking talent, creating numerous chancer and often cutting through Nigeria like a knife through butter-on another day it may have been 6-0, but the Albiceleste were prolifigate in front of goal. Argentina also looked defensively frail at times and a better counter attacking capabilities than Nigeria could have punished Diego Maradona's side. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=264037&cc=388t&ver=global in case u dont understand, the last sentence is saying Lagerback was too dull not to have taken advantage of Argentinas weak defence. |
