Obasanjo's Letter, Coup Baiting: Afenifere Warns Political Class

By Yinka Odumakin

Afenifere is compelled to issue a timely warning to the Nigerian political class and their military fronts on the dangers of resorting to the military option as the final act in the orchestrated hysteria being created in the polity as the law of unintended consequences does not unfold until after the event.

We are issuing this warning, as we can no longer ignore the rumor that has been very thick in the air that some forces that want to abort the proposed National Conference are scheming to exploit the challenges of our democracy to cause an unconstitutional change in the polity.

All citizens of our country with a sense of history would have been able to draw a parallel between General Obasanjo’s December2 letter to President Goodluck Jonathan and a document circulated in January,1976 entitled "FACTS  TO KNOW ABOUT MURTALA-A WARNING TO THE NATION".

Gen.Murtala Muhammed was assassinated a month afterwards. Interestingly, General Obasanjo was prominent among those copied the document.

Also,in the days preceding the coup against the Alhaji Shehu Shagari government in 1983,Gen.Obasanjo was very loud in criticizing the government.Thirty years after that act of treason,Mr Max Suollin in SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE has righty captured what was happening as "coup baiting" with generous quotation of IBB's confessions that those who staged the 1983 coup actually asked Obasanjo to come and lead the government,a request he turned down while encouraging the putsch.

"    Question:  “It was also said that those of you who ousted Shagari actually wanted to bring back General Obasanjo as Head of State in 1984. Is this true?”

Babangida: “It is true. But to be very fair to General Obasanjo, he rejected the offer. He said no. He said it would destroy his integrity, that he handed over to Shagari and that it is not right for him to get involved. But he (Obasanjo) said he was not stopping us from going ahead with the plot”."(Soldiers Of Fortune,Max Siollun,Pg 14)

It was little wonder that while Gen Obasanjo issued another in the series of his infamous letters against Babaginda Military Junta in 1992,the "evil genius" quickly ran from Abuja to Otta and followed up with reshuffles in the military high commands. The same IBB is the first person Obasanjo copied his letter.

This is why we in Afenifere are not impressed with the sinister letter from the ever manipulative and evil agenda setting General who has never shown any pure motive since he started his interventions in our national affairs.

It is therefore the height of foolhardiness and or a lack of any sense of history for members of the political class to be enabling these Generals who have not been known to act in the collective interest in their infamous careers.

Have our politicians forgotten so soon what the country went through for six years when Abacha was enabled to overthrow the Shonekan Interim Government in 1993?

We do not argue that Nigeria does not have serious challenges at the moment but we refuse to accept that the solutions to our problems would come from any group of military adventures. It is a jaded option that we have been offered over the years and it has always created more problems than the ones it promises to solve.

On a more fundamental note, there is a delicate balance in the country at the moment which has made the proposed National Conference the most veritable platform to address the crises facing Nigeria and for which the nationalities are rearing to go.

To attempt to stop that process by staging a coup would amount to rushing Nigeria to a major catastrophe as any group of military adventurers may discover there is no space for them to preside over.

It is therefore in the best interest of all that all those who are possibly plotting to cause crisis in the country perish the thought and allow the National Conference to proceed seamlessly so that the people of Nigeria can proffer their own solutions to our challenges so we can emerge a united and prosperous entity from the table of brotherhood.

This is our patriotic approach to nation building, which we commend to all reasonable Nigerians.

Yinka Odumakin.

National Publicity Secretary,
Afenifere

You sound insecure. Nevertheless, let's not quibble over terminologies.
My question still is, where does Afenifere come down in this present disagreement?
Hausa says it must be based on population (a convenient advantage for the North)
Igbo says tribes, zones should be equally represented.
What do you say?
Feel free to inch towards the North's hankering, but at least have the decency to inform the rest of us.

Finally, that unnecessary detour to demonize Ojukwu and your simplistic account of the events that led up to the civil war both make your argument inconsistent, and without depth.
Nairalanders are genus, so una still managed to turn this into Yoruba vs Igbo leaving the originators to park well and watch. Nawoaa

[quote author=Acidosis]One thing I've noticed is, some particular churches are always eager to bury the dead.. Infact, they fight to make sure they get the slot of burial..

1. ******** ******
2. ECWA (Evangelical Church of West Africa)
3. Anglican church
4. Baptist Church
5. Methodist

My Grand mom before she gave her life to Christ was a Methodist fanatic..
According to her, her Reverend in Church always tell them (old women) not to miss church services so the Church can organise a good burial for them, and by so doing, all the aged women can meet their husbands in "heaven" (some of whom died as a drunkard) grin

Some of these churches are occupied by old and aged men and women.. ECWA is a typical example..

In such cases, they have no choice but to continually bury the dead...

@Op, and who told you these Churches do not make money during burial?
Lol.. why do you think they're always interested in buring and buring?

I'm a man that loves to speak the truth, don't blame me grin

If I begin to tell you the money these Reverends make buring the dead, you'll be surprised.. Infact, they make more money than wedding events grin

I've met so many of them, I know their ways o... grin

You think they really care about the soul of the departed..
Oh you think, the "Egbe Obinrin" and "Women of Honour" that wear the same attire really care about the departed? lol

Abeg I nor fit laugh jare...

Thats not to praise or edify those pentecostal Churches who ignore that aspect.. It doesn't speak well of a Bible believing Church especially those that claim to have heaven and earth in their wallet.. Typical Pente-rascals, swaggerlistic-jerry curl tinted deceiving candidates of Hell..

In conclusion jare, burial ceremony shouldn't be a thing of joy except you're sure about the life of the dead..

Some of those you're celebrating here on earth are roasting in the lake of fire...
If only we could see them; those multi-coloured attires would change to rag in anguish and loud cry for mercy..

and did I also tell you that some Churches are pre-dominated by youths and men who do not see death forthcoming...
abi you want make them bury one another alive?[
/quote]

I'm a Methodist, when my mum left this world we gave money to no Reverend, like I said in my previous post, the church and especially members of the Women Fellowship were tremendously supportive.

when you talk of churches being dominated by the young, are u trying t say that death is now age based? The young dont die in your village abi?

When my mum left this world in 2009, it was almost as if the family was invited guest to the burial, Methodist Church took charge completely, in fact the leader of the women fellowship told me that the corpse belongs to them, members of the women fellowship waited and received the ambulance miles away from our house. I was so touched watching these women run after the ambulance singing "onye nso alawo elu igwe iga zuru ike".."the saint has gone to heaven to rest". It really looked like what it was, a transition to eternal rest!

I rededicated myself to Methodism and Methodist family after that!

PoliticsNational Carrier To Begin Operations With 50 Aircraft by Mekky2010(op): 9:19am On Jul 12, 2013
National Carrier to Begin Operations with 50 Aircraft

 Stella Oduah, Aviation Minister

Chinedu Eze

The federal government and its private investor partners may have concluded that the new national carrier, known as Nigeria One, would start operation with 50 aircraft that would be delivered before the end of next year.

Among the aircraft types that would be operated by the national airline include Embraer, Bombardier and Boeing.

THISDAY gathered from authoritative sources on Wednesday that while Embraer short haul aircraft types would be used for domestic operations, medium haul Bombardier would be used for regional services and Boeing planes would be used for long haul international flights.
All these aircraft would be delivered from the manufacturers, but it is not known yet whether they would be leased or they would be acquired by outright purchase.

As government is planning on how to establish the airline, it is also brainstorming on route development and THISDAY learnt that right now the body set out to establish the airline is meeting with some airlines for possible code share and other partnership with the future airlines, and in recognition of this the federal government is streamlining its bilateral service agreements with individual countries, aware that it would soon have its national carrier.

As the Ministry of Aviation has reiterated, the federal government does not intend and will not fund the establishment of the airline as it has designed an arrangement where the airline would be funded on public private partnership (PPP).

The private sector will drive the airline while government intends to own less than 25 per cent equity while significant percentage of the equity would be sold to the core investor, which is an international carrier, that will also influence the establishment of a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO facility) that would be completed shortly after the take-off of the national carrier.

THISDAY learnt that an international carrier from the Middle East has indicated interest to partner the airlines and an international business tycoon may put his money in the airline as a significant investor.

In spite of the bleak history of airline operation in Nigeria and the failed Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Nigeria partnership, the plan to attract foreign investors for the new national carrier attracted surprising enthusiasm from overseas.

This is attributed to the burgeoning air transport market in Nigeria, which an insider from one of the major airlines said would explode when effective and consistent competition crashed the fares to domestic destinations, “which a successful national carrier will do.”

The source told THISDAY, “We have concluded plans to acquire 50 aircraft. Yes, it is good to start small but we don’t want to do that; we want to hit the ground running because we know the market is there. I know that it will surprise you to know that an international airline from the Middle East has invested in the national carrier together with other rich investors from outside Nigeria. Our strategy is that it will be operated on PPP. FG is not investing any money but will not have many shares.”

On how organisations and individuals are investing in the new airline, the source said, “What we are doing is that we are selling shares on paper until the company is incorporated and the shares are being sold in percentages. After buying the shares you will then know the authorised shares.”

Many Nigerians are sceptical about the planned national carrier; very few are giving it the chance to succeed due to hind sight, including the parlous history of Nigerian Airways, but the source told THISDAY that such cynicism was to be expected because “It is a typical Nigerian attitude because of the people that ran organisations aground in the past. They lacked expertise and they did not want to seek expertise. They were not really sincere but this one is different.”

Science/TechnologySatellite To Bring CHEAP And FAST Internet Launched!!! by Mekky2010(op): 11:54pm On Jun 25, 2013

Satellites to bring 'fast, cheap' Internet to 'under-connected'

AFP - The first four of 12 satellites in a new constellation to provide affordable, high-speed Internet to people in nearly 180 "under-connected" countries, will be shot into space on Tuesday, the project's developers said.

The orbiters, part of a project dubbed O3b for the "other 3 billion" people with restricted Internet access, will be lifted by a Russian Soyuz rocket from Kourou in French Guiana at 1854 GMT.

"We are very close to launching a network that has the potential to change lives in very tangible ways and that is a tremendous feeling," O3b Networks chief technical officer Brian Holz said in a statement.

The project was born from the frustrations of Internet pioneer Greg Wyler with the inadequacy of Rwanda's telecommunications network, while travelling there in 2007.

"Access to the Internet backbone is still severely limited in emerging markets," Wyler said in unveiling the O3b venture in 2008 -- promising multi-gigabit Internet speeds to countries "whether landlocked in Africa or isolated by water in the Pacific Islands".

"Only when emerging markets achieve affordable and ubiquitous access to the rest of the world will we observe locally generated content, widespread e-learning, telemedicine and many more enablers to social and economic growth, which reflect the true value of the Internet," he said.

Wyler's plan was to bypass costly ground-based infrastructure like fibre-optics or cables by deploying a constellation of small satellites around the equator to serve as a spatial relay between users and the world wide web using only satellite dishes.

Such a system would cover a region between the latitudes of 45 degrees North and 45 degrees South -- the entire African continent, most of Latin America, the Middle East, southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

There are already geostationary satellites providing this type of services, but at a prohibitive cost for many end-users.

Existing satellites generally obit at an altitude of some 36,000 kilometres (22,000 miles) above Earth, weigh in at a hefty four to six tonnes each, and take much longer to bounce a signal back to Earth -- about 500 milliseconds to be exact, according to an O3b document.

"It is such a long delay that people speaking over a satellite link will shorten conversations, interactive web has an extremely poor experience and many web-based software programmes just won't function," it said.

The O3b satellites, built by the Franco-Italian company Thales Alenia Space, will orbit at 8,062 km and will weigh only 650 kilogrammes (1,400 pounds) each.

Crucially, they will communicate with Earth four times faster, said the company, and six would be enough to assure permanent coverage.

"O3b's prices will be 30 - 50 percent less than traditional satellite services," said the document.

And it added that a country like the Democratic Republic of Congo could move from being one of the most poorly-connected on Earth to one of the best.

Launch company Arianespace, which will put the satellites in orbit, said the O3b constellation will combine "the global reach of satellite coverage with the speed of a fiber-optic network".

Project investors include Internet giant Google, cable company Liberty Global, satellite operator SES, HSBC bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.

The first four satellites were due to be boosted into space on Monday but the launch was postponed by a day due to unfavourable weather conditions.

The next four satellites will be launched within weeks, according to Arianespace, and a final four "backup" orbiters early next year.

To refine its coverage, the constellation could in the end have as many as 16 supplementary satellites in addition to the 12 main ones, said O3b networks.

Before you blame the Ambassador and Embassy officials plz try to get your facts right, I studied in Russia, though not on Fed Sch progrm, I was however privileged to witness the plight of these students.
1. Russia offers Nigeria about 50 slots of scholarship yearly, they equally pay $40-50 monthly allowance for transport which all scholarship students (and believe me there are in their thousands from different countries) receive not later than 27th of every month. They never defaulted for all the yrs I spent there.
2. Standard hostel accommodation is usually provided FREE of charge but if you so wish, you can upgrade at your own cost.
3. Basically, Nigerian government only pays for upkeep, I hardly can remember any period payments were made as at when due.
4. A lot of students have contacts in the scholarship board and can easily attest that the money is usually held down in Nigeria, a couple of times, the Embassy resulted to borrowing from wealthy Nigerians in Moscow to pay students, there were cases where they denied themselves salaries to pay the students while battling with scholarship board. They do all that, not necessarily out of human kindness, but because they directly feel the heat of the protest which most of the times gets violent, a hungry man is an angry man u knw.

Free education, free accommodation with small allowance provided, na to feed ur pikin remain, still u say lie lie ...naija i hail thee!
