The incident happened on Sunday at about 1:30pm near the popular Nmuri Bridge Ebem Ohafia in Ohafia LGA Abia State.

Many of the victims pleaded for help as they endured unbearable pain, but rescue efforts were insufficient to save their lives.

In an interview with ABN TV, Chief Emeka Mba (Bam Bam), President General of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), described the day as a "black Sunday."

"Well, today should be regarded as a black Sunday because of the killings. As I speak to you, many people are still trapped under the truck. I learned that one of the survivors is a lady with her two children sitting in front of the bus. But several others are still under the vehicle, and it's a very helpless situation," he said.

Chief Mba lamented the lack of emergency response equipment to move the heavy-duty truck. "We have tried everything. We could not get any equipment to lift the truck and rescue the people underneath. It’s a very ugly situation," he explained.

When asked about the condition of the road, Chief Mba highlighted the poor state of the area and blamed the tragedy on government negligence. "That section of the road is very low, and we've done a lot of press and documentation to draw the government's attention to it. This is a private road, and heavy-duty trucks should be restricted until proper measures are put in place," he added.

A 21-year-old man was reportedly killed by police in Katsina. The NPF debunked this claim, noting that no incidents of killings were reported in the area on the specified date.

Amnesty International alleged the killing of a protester on October 1, 2024, in Kaduna. The NPF stated there were no protests on that date. A separate incident involving a military patrol and the accidental shooting of a civilian was misrepresented in the report.

The report alleged the police killed two women and a man during protests. Investigations revealed the man died after being struck by objects hurled by protesters, while the claims of police-related fatalities were found to be baseless.

Amnesty International alleged that 12 people were killed by police during protests. While 12 fatalities were reported, the deaths were attributed to violence by looters, vigilantes, and criminal elements, not the police.

The NPF firmly denied allegations of excessive force during the protests, emphasizing its commitment to international human rights standards. Officers were deployed to protect protesters, maintain order, and prevent criminal elements from exploiting the demonstrations. The police reiterated that firearms were not used against protesters, and detentions were conducted within the bounds of the law.

According to him, the police arrived at his house around 4 a.m. in four patrol vans, claiming they were acting on a petition filed against him. However, the nature of the petition was not disclosed.

“They came in by what, about 4 a.m.? More than 40 of them, in four vans. They said they came to arrest me over a petition. I asked them what the petition was about, but they refused to explain. I told them that an invitation would have sufficed, and I would have honored it. Why come to my house at such an odd hour on a Sunday morning?” Dr. Nduaguibe questioned.

“The villagers are here, singing and protesting. I still don’t understand what I’ve done wrong. If they wanted to arrest me, they should at least tell me the allegations,” he added.

Dr. Nduaguibe speculated that the police action might be linked to his recent public criticism of the government’s alleged plans to seize land in Nsulu. He insisted, however, that he had not personally participated in any protests.

“Is it a crime to stand against the government’s actions to forcefully take my people’s land? Have I been seen protesting? This seems like an attempt to silence me,” he said.

When asked about his next course of action, Dr. Nduaguibe confirmed he was preparing to meet the police. “I’m fully dressed and will go down to meet them. If they want to handcuff me or put me in their vehicle, so be it,” he stated.

A tricycle operator popularly known as Keke NAPEP, Mr. Raymond Onoh, from Ututu in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, has been lauded for his exemplary honesty after returning a lost bag containing a substantial amount of money and other valuables to its rightful owner, ABN TV reports.

The incident occurred during Mr. Onoh's routine operations in Umuahia. After dropping off a passenger at Isi Gate, he noticed a bag left at the back of his tricycle while heading toward Umudike Junction.

"I picked up the bag and placed it in front of my keke," Onoh explained. "I hoped to find the owner nearby, but after waiting and searching, no one came forward."

Upon returning home, Onoh inspected the bag with his brother and discovered it contained ₦470,000 in cash, a Dell laptop, school credentials, an appointment letter, and other personal items. They also found a book containing a phone number, which Onoh used to contact the owner.

The bag belonged to Mr. Tangban Eji Ejor, a student at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, who expressed deep gratitude and amazement at the recovery of his belongings.

Ejor explained that he had unknowingly left the bag in the tricycle while traveling from the university to Isi Gate. "I visited several stations to file complaints and was even preparing to announce the loss on air when I received a call from the keke rider," he said.

Upon retrieving the bag, Ejor confirmed that all items were intact. “It’s hard to believe such honesty exists in today’s world. I’m incredibly grateful, and no reward can adequately compensate for his kindness,” Ejor remarked.

An eyewitness, Mr. Otunbade Tobias, owner of Otixi Ventures in Umuahia, corroborated the story. Tobias revealed that Ejor had visited his shop before realizing his bag was missing. "We searched extensively and even considered a radio announcement before the keke rider contacted him," Tobias said.

Tobias added that he helped facilitate the bag’s return on behalf of Ejor, who had to travel to Cross River. "When I met the keke rider, he opened the bag, checked its contents, and confirmed ownership. Everything was intact," he recounted.

Speaking on his motivation, Onoh attributed his actions to his faith and moral upbringing. "My life is guided by the spirit of God and the principle of doing what is right. Good deeds endure longer than bad ones," he said.

He also urged others to practice honesty and integrity, emphasizing the importance of building a trustworthy society.

Tobias echoed these sentiments, encouraging the public to emulate such exemplary behavior. “Returning lost items is not just a moral duty; it also attracts blessings. Despite the challenges in our country, individuals like Mr. Onoh remind us that good citizens still exist,” Tobias concluded.

Governor Alex C. Otti of Abia State has presented the 2025 budget proposal to the Abia State House of Assembly, with an ambitious plan to continue the developmental momentum initiated during his administration's first 18 months.

Speaking on December 10, 2024, in Umuahia, the Governor proposed a budget of ₦750.3 billion, a 30% increase from the 2024 fiscal year.

The 2025 budget allocates 82% of the total outlay (₦611.7 billion) to capital projects, reflecting the administration's commitment to socioeconomic transformation. Major allocations include:

₦55 billion for road construction and rehabilitation, including rural roads to boost agricultural productivity.
₦4 billion for the revamping of the Umuahia Regional Water Scheme.
₦29.5 billion for perimeter fencing in 262 schools to enhance safety.

₦13 billion for agro-industrial processing zones in Bende, Ukwa, and Umunneochi local government areas.
Governor Otti highlighted the ongoing transformation of key urban centers, including Aba and Umuahia, citing completed and ongoing road projects as evidence of progress.

A combined 35% of the budget will be allocated to health and education, with specific projects including:

Rehabilitation of 200 primary healthcare facilities across the state.

Speaking to ABN TV, Mr. Ezeanyagu disclosed that the raid occurred at about 2 a.m. at their residence in Umuobia Olokoro Estate, Umuahia. The heavily armed EFCC operatives, some of whom were masked, forcefully broke the gates and doors with hammers to gain entry into their home.

“The most humiliating part was that my wife, who is over eight months pregnant, was completely naked and asleep when they burst into our room. They didn’t care about her state or modesty; they just ordered us to lie face down, treating us like hardened criminals,” Mr. Ezeanyagu recounted.

According to him, the EFCC operatives refused to disclose their mission or the directive under which they acted. They seized his phone and other electronic devices in an attempt to find incriminating evidence. However, after thorough checks, they found nothing linking him to internet fraud or any criminal activity.

“When they realized they had made a mistake, they apologized and left, but the damage was already done. My pregnant wife was thrown into a state of shock and trauma due to the incident and has been hospitalized since,” he lamented.

ABN TV has been unsuccessful in reaching the EFCC Head of Media & Publicity, Mr. Dele Oyewale, for comments on the incident.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Abia State. In a similar scenario three years ago, EFCC officials wrongfully raided the home of a journalist, Norah Okafor, also in Umuahia. These repeated occurrences have raised concerns about the agency’s operational methods and the lack of accountability for such errors.

Mr. Ezeanyagu has called for justice and urged the EFCC to adopt more professional and humane approaches in their operations to avoid causing unnecessary harm to innocent citizens.

Mary’s life was tragically cut short in a fatal accident just months ago. The accident occurred right in front of the school on March 5, 2024, when Mary, aged 27, had visited the campus to collect her final results and complete clearance for NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) mobilization. As she crossed the road near the school gate, a fast-moving heavy truck struck her, leading to her untimely death. Her untimely death came as a devastating blow to her family, friends, and the polytechnic community, who admired her dedication and academic excellence.

At the convocation ceremony, her absence was deeply felt. Students, lecturers, and attendees reflected on her achievements and the painful reality of her not being present to receive the honor she had worked so hard to earn.

“She was a shining star,” one lecturer recounted. “Mary was not just an outstanding student academically; she was also an inspiration to everyone who knew her.”

The wife of an Abia businessman, Mr. Ugochukwu Ezeanyagu, who is 8 months pregnant, has been hospitalized after officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invaded their home located at Umuobia Olokoro Estate in the state capital, Umuahia, at 2 am on Friday, December 6.

The husband told ABN TV that the heavily armed EFCC officials, some of whom were masked, broke the gates of their home with a hammer and destroyed the doors to forcefully gain access to their room.

He said the officials, who failed to state their mission or on whose directive they acted, humiliated him and his highly traumatized pregnant wife, forcing them to lie face down in a manner that depicted them as armed robbers.

While the horrifying experience was ongoing, the officials seized his phone and other electronic gadgets, apparently to ascertain if there were suspicious transaction histories contained there.

After finding no evidence to link the businessman to internet fraud, the EFCC officials reportedly apologized for the damages caused and left the premises.

"The most painful part is that my wife is over 8 months pregnant. They threw her into crisis last night, with the whole shock and trauma," Ezeanyagu stated.

As of the time of this report, an official complaint was yet to be lodged with the police.

Member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency of Abia State, Hon. Amobi Ogah has presented a motion before the House calling for immediate reduction of security checkpoints in South East region, especially on the Onitsha/Enugu Expressway.

Hon. Ogah said the excessive security checkpoints violate the rights of the people in the region to free movement, as well as affect economic activities.

The lawmaker said the distance covering about 105klm has at least 28 security checkpoints, which include officials of the Nigerian Army, Nigeria police, and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Awkuzu, Amawbia junctions, Ugwoba boundary, Oji River junction, and Onyeama hill are some of the points where checkpoints have been mounted along the expressway.

"These multiple roads checkpoints subject travellers to constant harassment, delays, and extortions of different sorts, in addition to other inconveniences.

"The House may be aware that the installation of numerous checkpoints along expressway violates the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to free movement as enshrined in Section 41 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

"It is also a direct affront to the dignity of the people, particularly in the Southeast, where such levels of militarization are more pronounced. The House is notified that these security checkpoints appear to be more of a tool for harassment than a genuine effort in ensuring security.

"It is in the record that ordinary citizens, especially commercial drivers, are often forced to pay bribes at the checkpoints to avoid delays or harassment", he noted.

Hon. Ogah said the delays encountered in free movement of citizens affect their socio-economic lives as the constant interruptions increase the cost of transportation of goods and other services.

Additionally, the parliamentarian said this discourages investment in the region.

He called for the use of modern and efficient means of managing security in the region without subjecting the people to undue hardship or violating their human rights.

Hon. Chief Humphrey Ukafor Azubuike, a former member of the Abia State House of Assembly who represented the Ugwunagbo State Constituency, is set to be laid to rest following his passing after a brief illness, ABN TV reports.

He was 58 years old.

Azubuike, a prominent political figure in Abia State, served in the House of Assembly between 2003 and 2015. In the 2019 general elections, he contested as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Osisioma/Ugwunagbo/Obingwa Federal Constituency before his eventual defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The family has released details of the funeral arrangements, which will commence on Thursday, December 19, 2024, with a valedictory session at the Abia State House of Assembly. A service of songs will follow later in his family compound at Ihie Obeaku, Ugwunagbo Local Government Area.

On Friday, December 20, 2024, a series of events will mark his final journey. These include the body’s departure from a mortuary in Aba to his hometown, followed by a lying-in-state at his family compound. The funeral service will take place at St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Ihie Obeaku, with interment immediately afterward.

Azubuike, also known as Enyi Oha 1 of Ngwa Land, was deeply respected as a husband, father, brother, and community leader. His legacy as a lawmaker and political leader will be remembered fondly by many.

He is survived by his family, who have requested prayers for the repose of his soul.

The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Olatunji Disu, has announced an immediate ban on the use of tinted glasses on vehicles as part of intensified efforts to combat the rising wave of criminal activities, including 'one chance' operations and kidnappings, in the territory, ABN TV reports.

Speaking during a press briefing, CP Disu emphasized the importance of the measure, noting that tinted glasses have been exploited by criminals to conceal their identities and activities. “For now, the use of tinted glasses on vehicles is prohibited. If your vehicle has tinted glasses, kindly remove them to avoid having your vehicle impounded by the police,” he said.

He explained that the ban is critical for ensuring transparency and safety on the roads. “We are clamping down on all commercial vehicles and individuals with tinted vehicles. We need to see people in their vehicles. Tinted glass is contributing to a lot of lawlessness. Many victims of kidnappings have revealed that the tinted glasses made it difficult for bystanders to notice they were in distress,” CP Disu stated.

The police chief further warned against the deliberate covering or removal of vehicle number plates, describing such practices as enablers of criminal activities. “We will enforce the law on covering of number plates. Nobody has the right to cover or fail to fix registration numbers on their vehicles. These acts are forms of criminality that rob innocent citizens of their safety and peace of mind.”

Residents of the FCT have been urged to comply with these directives to avoid sanctions, including the impounding of their vehicles. CP Disu assured the public that the police remain committed to enforcing all relevant laws to maintain security and order in the FCT.
