During his monthly media chat, Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians, the governor dismissed calls for further negotiations on the matter, accusing the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) leadership of bad faith and political manipulation.

"Once you start from a dishonest point of view, I cannot deal with you. If you like, twist the equation 100 times, I will not deal with them because they are very dishonest. But the pensioners themselves are happy that they were paid," Otti asserted.

He alleged that the controversy surrounding pension arrears was politically motivated, blaming the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) for fueling the dispute. According to him, even the lawyer representing the pensioners is linked to the PDP, a party that allegedly neglected retirees for years.

"I have investigated it and found that it is the PDP. Their lawyer is a PDP lawyer. Why would they hire someone who owed them for years to now attack the person who is paying them?" he questioned.

Governor Otti maintained that his administration has been consistent in paying pensions fully and on time, adding that those unhappy with their payments are free to return the money.

"If somebody is unhappy that he's being paid his 100% pension every month, he should return the one that he has been paid and continue wearing black," he stated.

He further declared that he would not engage in any further negotiations with the pensioners’ leadership, insisting that the matter had been settled.

A Mobile Court sitting at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Umuahia, Abia State, presided over by Chief Magistrate P. N. Lekwa, has ordered the remand of one Ebochue Kingsley Uzoka, aged 40, over his alleged involvement in the murder of Chimaobi Anya Ojo.

ABN TV reports that the suspect was arraigned on Monday, January 28, 2025, on charges of conspiracy and murder.

According to the charges filed under Sections 324 and 319(1) of the Criminal Code, Ebochue Uzoka, along with others who are currently at large, is accused of conspiring to murder and unlawfully k!lling Chimaobi Anya Ojo on September 20, 2024, at Nkata Ibeku in Umuahia North.

The court adjourned the case to February 19, 2025, and directed the Chief Registrar of the Magistrate Court, Umuahia North, to transmit the original case file to the Attorney General of Abia State for further prosecution.

The victim, Chimaobi Anya Ojo, a 36-year-old native of Elu Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area, had returned from Poland in February 2024 to meet his newborn daughter and prepare a comfortable home for his family. Tragically, his life was cut short shortly after celebrating his daughter’s first birthday on September 8, 2024. Speaking on the issue, Udensi said: “Governors across the country are blatantly disobeying the Supreme Court order. They not only divert these funds but also create obstacles to ensure financial autonomy for local governments does not work.”

According to him, only four states have complied with the directive to submit local government account details to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), a move aimed at ensuring transparency in fund disbursements. He described the actions of non-compliant governors as a direct attack on grassroots development, adding: “Funds meant for salaries, infrastructure, and services at the grassroots are being hijacked by state governments. This practice undermines governance and leaves rural communities stranded.”

Udensi stressed that the diversion of local government funds has paralyzed essential services in rural areas, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. He noted that the failure to empower local governments has widened the gap between urban and rural communities, leaving many Nigerians without access to basic amenities.

The security expert called on anti-corruption agencies, including the EFCC, ICPC, and NFIU, to intensify their monitoring of fund allocations to local governments. He warned that he has evidence to expose state governors involved in the mismanagement of these funds.

The Abia State Police Command has issued an urgent call to the public for assistance in locating a missing man, Chidiadi Solomon Onyema, a 38-year-old resident of Aba and native of Umuode village, Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area, [/b]ABN TV reports.

In a statement released by the Commissioner of Police, Abia State, through the [b]Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, it was revealed that Chidiadi was last seen on November 25, 2024, when he left his residence on Ibegbulam Street, Omuma Road, Aba at about 11:00 am, riding a motorcycle to his village. He has not been seen or heard from since.

His brother, Mr. Chinedu Onyema, filed a distressing report of his disappearance on January 17, 2025.

Chidiadi is described as 5 feet tall, with a fair complexion and no tribal marks. He is fluent in English and Igbo, making communication easier for those who might encounter him.

The Abia State Police Command has appealed to members of the public who may have any information about his whereabouts to contact Mr. Chinedu Onyema, visit the nearest police station, or reach out to the Office of the Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command.

A retired medical technologist and philanthropist, Mr. Anya Inyima Ojiabo, based in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, has embarked on an extraordinary road construction project in his hometown of Ebem Ohafia, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

The self-funded project, which utilizes advanced cement rigid pavement technology, is complemented by strong drainage systems on both sides of the road and features top-tier engineering standards to ensure durability and longevity.

Explaining the technical details of the project, Mr. Ojiabo revealed that the construction involves a thickness fill and compaction of up to 300mm, followed by casting with reinforced concrete. The concrete is reinforced with high-tensile (8mm to 10mm) wire mesh reinforcement bars over a stabilized base course. This is treated with a prime coat before being layered with asphaltic concrete for added durability.

Speaking about his motivation, Mr. Ojiabo shared: "I love Ebem as a village. Over the years, I noticed that the lack of good roads remains a major challenge despite the beautiful buildings here. The dust from unpaved roads also poses serious health risks. I decided to construct a concrete road, starting near my house in Abukafia, popularly called Timber Shed, and to incorporate strong drainages on both sides to prevent flooding. My goal is to extend the road as far as God permits, linking Asaga Road and Arochukwu Road."

So far, the project has covered a distance of 300 meters, and Mr. Ojiabo remains determined to continue as far as his resources will allow. He emphasized that the initiative is entirely self-funded with no government collaboration: "This project is financed entirely from my retirement savings. I believe it’s the best way to give back to my community. Improving the environment also improves health for everyone living here."

The project has drawn widespread commendation from the community. Several dignitaries visited Mr. Ojiabo’s residence to express their gratitude, including HRH Engr. Eze Awa Nwankwo (Ezie Ogo of Amaekpu Ohafia), Rev. Dr. Onyema Agbai, Chief Uduma Nnate, and Mr. Ifeanyi Okali, Publicity Secretary of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU).

The Abia State Government has issued a stern warning to individuals or groups attempting to extort or defraud applicants in the ongoing recruitment of over 2,000 teachers for public schools in the state.

According to Hon. Nkole, Ohafia and neighboring communities are plagued by erratic power supply due to systemic inefficiencies and outdated infrastructure. He revealed that the energy allocation to the region is far below the required 500 megawatts, leaving communities in darkness and stifling economic growth.

"The substations in Arochukwu and Ohafia are in deplorable condition, with some vandalized or completely non-functional. Transmission towers are lying on the ground, and the infrastructure is in shambles," he said, urging EEDC to rehabilitate substations and replace fallen poles to restore transmission lines.

He was particularly critical of EEDC's estimated billing system, accusing the company of imposing arbitrary charges on households without proper metering. "Communities are being charged billions of naira without justification. This practice is unfair and erodes trust in the electricity provider," he added.

In another operation, the police arrested Sunday Okwo Ade, Monday Solomon, David Emmanuel, and Shakiru Badmus, members of a notorious group specializing in motorcycle theft from farmers in Lagos and Ogun states. Fifteen stolen motorcycles were recovered from the suspects.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun praised the efforts of officers and reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to its core mission of protecting citizens and ensuring justice. Tensions have escalated in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State following a violent clash between the people of Ndi Isu and residents of Mbiabong Ukwa in Odukpani LGA, Cross River State.

In the wake of the confrontation, three members of the Isu community remain missing. The President General of the Isu Progressive Union, Engr. Amarachi Kalu, decried the continuous encroachment on Isu land by the Ukwa people. Speaking to journalists, he expressed deep concerns over the recurring attacks, which he said have led to the displacement of many Isu residents since 2018.

“These invasions have caused immense suffering for our people. The attack on our fishermen at Okpa Isu Pond is the latest in a series of aggressions. We are calling on the State and Federal Governments to intervene urgently and address this crisis before it spirals further out of control,” Engr. Kalu stated.

Residents of Ndi Isu have voiced fears of escalating violence, urging authorities to provide adequate security to prevent further attacks and protect their livelihoods.

ABN TV recalls that in September last year, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, expressed optimism that the lingering boundary dispute between the Isu community in Arochukwu LGA and its neighbors in Cross River would soon be resolved.

“This road has been a nightmare for years. Over the Christmas holidays, I witnessed firsthand the difficulties our people endure here. While we await a lasting solution from the federal government, we’ve undertaken these palliative measures to temporarily ease movement,” Hon. Osonwa said.

The lawmaker explained that despite concerted efforts, including written communications to the contractors since July 2024, no tangible progress has been made. “To date, the contractors claim they are owed significant sums for work already done, but they’ve failed to justify the expenditure. Meanwhile, our people continue to suffer,” he lamented.

The palliative work involves leveling and filling critical road sections to ensure temporary usability. According to Hon. Osonwa, materials, including sand and stones, were delivered to stabilize eroded sections. However, he acknowledged that the repairs are short-term and may deteriorate during the next rainy season if comprehensive rehabilitation is not undertaken.

“Our intervention is far from perfect, but it’s the best we can do under the circumstances. Without a proper reconstruction by the contractors, this road will continue to be a risk to lives and property,” he said.

Hon. Osonwa extended his condolences to families who lost loved ones in recent accidents on the road. He criticized the government’s slow response and urged both the federal authorities and the contractors to prioritize the completion of the project.

“Sending condolence messages after every tragedy is not enough. We must act decisively to prevent further loss of lives. I will continue to advocate strongly for this project in the House of Representatives,” he assured.

The Deputy Speaker said that the defection is a reflection of the people's gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who has shown commitment to Igbo people's development, especially through the creation of the South East Development Commission (SEDC).

He said that the establishment of the Commission will essentially cater for the region's infrastructure needs.

It will be recalled that Nkwonta, who chairs the House Committee on South East Development Commission recently defected to the APC from the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Kalu said: "The President has tried for Ndigbo. He is still trying for Ndigbo. He is the only man who remembered Ndigbo after 54 years when a promise of reconstruction, reconciliation, and rehabilitation was made to Ndigbo. He came with the spirit of equity and fairness. He is a leader who believes in development. He signed the bill into law so that the damage caused by the Civil War would be rebuilt. As the leader of our party, he has asked us to galvanize the grassroots and bring them closer to the politics of development that he is bringing to the Igbo land.

"For taking this decision to join APC, it shall be well with you. APC has come closer to the people. On behalf of our party, we welcome you. We know who you are and what you are capable of doing. When this caliber of people left PDP and other parties and joined the APC, what again is left? The parties have collapsed. Everybody is here. We will empower you to empower others".

As Christians worldwide prepare to celebrate Christmas, Sir Chikwe Udensi, a security consultant with the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), has raised concerns over the tragedies overshadowing the festive season in Nigeria.

Speaking with ABN TV, Sir Udensi described Christmas as a time to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ and reflect on its joyous significance. However, he lamented that this year’s celebrations have been marred by incidents of violence, kidnappings, and road accidents.

“Christmas is a time when we remember the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and celebrate joyfully. Unfortunately, this year, the celebration has been overshadowed by tragic events,” Sir Udensi said.

He highlighted a recent road accident in Abia State, where lives were lost as people traveled to reunite with family for the holidays. “What happened just days ago in Abia State, where people died in large numbers while trying to receive loved ones, is heart-wrenching. This is not how Christmas should be celebrated,” he stated.

Sir Udensi emphasized that such tragedies are often avoidable, calling for better safety measures and increased vigilance during the holiday season. He urged Nigerians to embrace the true spirit of Christmas—peace, joy, and love—and to reflect on ways to worship meaningfully and safely.

“Let us not allow these avoidable tragedies to define the season. Christmas is a time for unity and celebration, not sorrow or gnashing of teeth,” he concluded.
