Politics / Abia North: I've No Competitor, I'm Almost Consensus Candidate — Sen. Kalu by Metrix147: 3:03pm On Feb 22, 2023
Senator representing Abia North senatorial district, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu has said he is running his campaign on the record of achievements he has made since his election in the Senate, saying he has nobody challenging him in the Feb. 25 National Assembly election.

Sen. Kalu, the Senate Chief Whip who said he is almost a consensus candidate in the upcoming election boasted that he will record 85% of the total vote cast.

While noting that he has defeated the PDP candidate, Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa in the past, the former Abia governor said he will trounce his opponents at the polls again.

Featuring on Arise TV's Morning Show on Tuesday monitored by ABN TV, Sen. Kalu said his constituents are happy with the massive projects he has attracted both in road infrastructure and empowerment, expressing hope that they will return him to the Senate on Saturday.

"You just read that I was given an award by the press corps of the Senate as one of the best Senators sitting in that chamber, they also gave me an award as best Senator that has human relations to interact with staff of the National Assembly.

"If one or two people decide to call themselves a group to campaign against me, that is a group, all the churches here have endorsed my candidature, I have the Catholic Bishop of our Diocese, I have the Prelate of the entire Presbyterian church, I have the Methodist Church, the Anglican Church, all of them have endorsed me.

"The election is just few days away and the results will show. I am very proud that I have represented my constituency very well, we constructed roads where there have never been roads, places where people used to carry farm produce on their heads to their villages.

"Go to Ohafia local government, go to Umuneochi local government, go to Isuikwuato local government, go to Bende and Arochukwu local governments, the story is the same.

"We are not only doing roads, just five days ago, but we also gave about 496 communities cassava grinding machines because I received a stewardship report and I saw that was a challenge.

"Let me tell you, we are running this election as almost consensus candidate, we are going to make 85 percent of votes cast on the ballots and that is the truth", he declared.

Politics / It Will Be Suicidal To Attempt Disrupting Elections In Abia, Police Talks Tough by Metrix147: 1:30pm On Feb 20, 2023
A combined team of security agencies on Saturday held a show of force in the three senatorial districts of Abia state with an assurance that they are prepared to ensure the safety and security of residents at the Feb. 25 elections and others, ABN TV reports.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KE_uwd37_c
Security agencies who took part in the "Operation Show of Force" include, the Department of State Services, DSS; Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCD; National Drug Law Enforcement Agency; and the Road Safety.

Addressing newsmen at the command headquarters in Umuahia, Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Mustapha Mohammed Bala said that Abia was not safe for anybody hatching any plans to disrupt the election as such attempt would be suicidal.

He assured that necessary security measures have been put in place to ensure that voters go out to exercise their franchise on Sat. February 25.

The CP flanked by the Commander, 14 Brigade Nigeria Army, Ohafia, Brigadier General Adegoke Adetuyi; and Heads of other agencies cautioned hoodlums contemplating disrupting the peace people of the state are enjoying to have a rethink.

The police boss said, ”My advice to hoodlums is to relocate from Abia because the state will be too hot for them. Those who want to foment troubles during the election should leave now because we won’t allow them.

”We are ready for the elections and we have planned properly to ensure the security of lives and property of residents.

”Logistically we are ready, and we are combat ready. That’s why we are on this confidence- building patrol to reassure residents of their protection.”

On the sit-at-home order by Finland- based self-acclaimed freedom fighter, Simon Ekpa, in South East during the election days, the CP urged residents to disregard the order which, he noted, serves no good purpose.

According to him, the security agencies are not taking anything for granted, hence the show of force patrol and other stringent security measures put in place to ensure nobody disrupts the forthcoming elections in the state.

The CP identified Umunneochi Local Government Area as a flash point due to its multi-border points and assured that adequate security measures have been mapped out.

The commander, 14 Brigade Nigeria Army, Ohafia, Brigadier General Adegoke Adetuyi in his remarks said that although Abia was relatively peaceful, nothing would be left to chances, adding that all security agencies in the state are synergising to ensure adequate security of lives and property.

“While Abia State is observed to be relatively calm, largely due to many effective operations by the various security agencies, the security situation remains unpredictable.”

He noted that the threats by some elements to prevent election in South East geopolitical zone presented “a real challenge that requires aggressive posture through precursor operations in order to neutralize it.”

“This informs the call for the conduct of joint show of force march by all security agencies in the SE geopolitical zone, including Abia State, as part of the plans and preparations for the successful conduct of the election.

Politics / Supreme Court Affirms Ikechi Emenike As APC Guber Candidate In Abia by Metrix147: 5:19pm On Feb 09, 2023
The Supreme Court has affirmed Ikechi Emenike as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State.

A five-member panel of the supreme court led by Tijani Abubakar on Thursday affirmed the judgment of the court of appeal delivered in December 2022.

The Abia APC had held parallel governorship primaries that produced Uche Ogah and Emenike as candidates of the party.

On May 26, the APC declared Emenike the winner of the governorship primary in the state.

On November 11, Binta Nyako, a federal high court judge, sacked Emenike and ordered INEC to recognise Ogah as the party’s governorship candidate in the state.

Both APC and Emenike had filed separate appeals challenging the verdict delivered by Nyako.

Dan Eke, another aspirant, also filed an appeal challenging the judgment of the trial judge that recognised Ogah’s candidacy.

In December 2022, the court of appeal sitting in Abuja affirmed Emenike as the party’s candidate.

In the unanimous verdict, Olabisi Ige, who led the appeal court panel, read out the names of the party members sent by the APC national secretariat to conduct the governorship primary that produced Emenike, affirming that the exercise was valid.

Politics / Court Of Appeal Sacks Greg Ibe As APGA Governorship Candidate In Abia by Metrix147: 9:35pm On Feb 08, 2023
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has declared that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has no governorship candidate for the 2023 election in Abia State, ABN TV reports.

A unanimous verdict of a three-member panel of justices read by Justice Stephen Adah on Wednesday ruled that the failure of the party to conduct a valid primary within the time set by law robbed it of the opportunity to participate in the elections.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had in December 2022 nullified the May 29, 2022 primary of APGA in Abia on the grounds of irregularities in the conduct.

The court presided over by Justice Binta Nyako then ordered the party to conduct a fresh primary within 14 days.

The primary has been marred by controversy with Prof Greg Ibe, Etigwe Uwa and Chikwe Udensi all laying claims to the governorship ticket.

Politics / Abia ADC Suspends, Guber Candidate, Bishop Sunday Onuoha. Others by Metrix147: 10:17am On Feb 01, 2023
The Abia State African Democratic Congress, (ADC) State Working Committee (SWC) on Tuesday 31, January 2023, suspended indefinitely its gubernatorial candidate, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, its Abia Central senatorial candidate, Dr Godson Abraham, and its Umuahia central state constituency candidate, Deacon Iyke Nwoko correspondingly.

The party also disowned one Mr Osita Offor (Ultimate Commander) who parades as the party’s Abia North senatorial candidate even when his name is not domiciled in the INEC list.

According to the release signed by Don Norman Obinna Executive State Chairman of the party and Micheal Elite Eze Ag. State Secretary, the SWC suspended Bishop Sunday Onuoha for orchestrating and promoting schism and factionalism in the party.

They also said that Bishop Onuoha was negotiating to stand down for any willing governorship candidate of another party for a monetary reward using the ADC mandate and failing to set up a campaign council and appointing a DG, 36 days before the 2023 gubernatorial election.

The release further added that he was suspended for not having a campaign manifesto or engaging in reasonable electioneering and making campaign materials available across the state for awareness and effective political engagement.

Onuoha was alleged to be using the party’s mandate to solicit funds from sympathisers and the unsuspecting public under the false pretence of electioneering.

Aside from these, Bishop Onuoha was said to have failed to galvanise, motivate or grant some sort of financial support to the party’s State House candidates.

Rather, he coaxes them to donate money to support the ousted National chairman’s political jamborees and to his ill-fated and deserted flag-off.

The statement reads; "We view his action as a deliberate emasculation of the candidates to jeopardize the chances of the party and its candidates in the forthcoming general election.”

“In other words, his conduct has made our party a public spectacle as well as exposed it to odium and opprobrium.”

In the case of Dr Abraham Godson, the SWC suspended him for openly adopting the Labour party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi and further produced campaign materials containing his and Obi’s effigies.

Aside from this gross anti-party undertaking, he disparaged our party’s Presidential Candidate, H.E. Dumebi Kachikwu on a widely broadcast live radio program.

“Deacon Iyke Nwoko our supposed Umuahia Central State candidate deceived the party by picking its nomination form for the State House of Assembly after he had participated in the PDP primaries and lost.”

This runs afoul of the electoral act as amended.”

He also engaged in activities that caused disaffection among party members when he unlawfully removed two elected Ward Chairmen and women leaders of the Umuahia North LGA.

According to Article 22 section ii, vi, viii, ix, of the ADC Constitution, these activities constitute acts of gross misconduct.

The SWC, after reviewing the activities of the trio was left in the invidious position of preserving the party’s integrity and terminus ad quem or to molly-cuddle them and justifying the tag of mediocre already attached to the ADC.

“We, however, chose the former to preserve our party’s objective which is to enthrone good governance in Abia State.”

“We, therefore, urge Abians not to waste their votes on moles and unscrupulous persons whose aim is to take advantage of our impulses for change to hoodwink us.”

“We shall, as a matter of necessity, adopt a gubernatorial candidate, a senatorial candidate for Abia Central, and a state house candidate for Umuahia central in a few days.”

Politics / Abia PDP Guber: Lucky Igbokwe Kicks Against Plans To Introduce New Contestants by Metrix147: 7:59pm On Jan 31, 2023
A chieftain of the People's Democratic Party, PDP in Abia state, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, better known as Don Lulu has kicked against plans to introduce new contestants in the race to replace Prof. Uche Ikonne who before his death last week was the PDP governorship candidate in Abia.

Don Lulu in a chat with ABN TV on Tuesday said the new Electoral Act 2022 allows for a fresh primary in the event that a candidate is incapacitated, late or by reason of resignation.

He wondered why those who were not part of the primary election held last year will be part of the Feb. 4 contest to replace Prof. Ikonne.

"One of the things people are wondering about is, those people coming in as new contestants, they have not gone to the 17 local government areas to consult people, people were not invited, especially the party people, just like we did by moving around the 17 local governments.

"Moving around the 17 local governments enables you to know the people's needs, what they want, it's like interacting with the grass root", he said.

Don Lulu who was the youth ambassador of Prof. Ikonne Campaign Council wondered what the reason for introducing new contestants is.

He thanked the national leadership of the PDP for opening the contest for those who took part in the previous exercise that produced Prof. Ikonne as winner.

Don Lulu came second in the contest.

The Abia State leadership of the People's Democratic Party, PDP had micro-zoned its governorship ticket to Isialangwa North, the home local government of the late holder, Prof. Ikonne.

There are indications that the chief of staff to the Governor, Chief Okey Ahiwe may be the favoured aspirant.

Politics / Abia Chief Of Staff Tipped To Replace Prof. Ikonne As PDP Guber Candidate by Metrix147: 7:47pm On Jan 31, 2023
Indications have emerged that Sir Okey Ahiwe the Chief of Staff to Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu may emerge as the replacement for the late Prof. Eleazear Uche Ikonne who before his death was the governorship candidate of the party in Abia, a reliable source told ABN TV.

This comes ahead of the Feb. 4 primary election in which a candidate is expected to emerge from Isialangwa North, the home local government of the late Prof. Ikonne, a former Abia State University, Uturu vice-chancellor.

The party had zoned the ticket back to Isialangwa North to make up for the chances of the zone following the passage of Prof. Ikonne in Abuja after a brief illness at the National Hospital in the nation's capital.

At the moment, Chief Sir Okey Ahiwe, Prince C. O Enweremadu who is the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Barr. Bob Ogu Commissioner for Works have all obtained their nomination and expression of interest forms and are ready to test their popularity among the delegates participating in the primary election.

A source who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity says though the three cabinet members are trusted allies of the governor, the most favoured is the chief of staff who is believed to have demonstrated capacity ever since his appointment by the governor as chief of staff.

His appointment last year followed the resignation of the erstwhile Chief of Staff to the Governor, Professor ACB Agbazuere, from Isialangwa South who had quit to pursue his political ambition, where he is seeking to represent Isialangwa North/South Federal Constituency of Abia State.

Our source said Chief Ahiwe's closeness to the governor in the last one year has given him an edge over other contestants as the governor is believed to have narrowed his choice of a successor to his chief of staff.

Born in December 1966, Chief Sir Okey Ahiwe who hails from Umuire Village in Eziama Ntigha Autonomous Community of Isiala-Ngwa North LGA also has age on his side at 54. Aside from this, as the founding president of Ngwa Patriots Forum, he enjoys the support of the Ukwa la Ngwa political bloc as well as leaders of PDP from the zone.

The Chief of Staff is also believed to be experienced in the handling of government affairs, especially with his closeness to authorities since April last year. He is also one of the front runners without any trace of corruption or any invitation from anti-corruption agencies.

Sources say his loyalty to the governor is unquestionable and is most likely to emerge as the party's flag bearer after the Feb. 4 primary election. The governor is yet to however visibly canvas for support for any other three cabinet members jostling to succeed him.

Politics / WAEC Denies Gregory Ibe’s Certificate As He Faces Fresh Legal Hurdles by Metrix147: 10:13am On Jan 27, 2023
The dream of a Chieftain of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA in Abia state, Prof. Gregory Ibe to lead Abia may still be tall as the West African Examination Council, WAEC says it does not have his certificate which he had submitted to INEC as part of his academic qualifications.

This comes as one Prince Uchechukwu Adiele institutes a legal action against Prof. Ibe before a chief magistrate court in Aba, Abia State.

In an affidavit obtained by ABN TV and deposed to by one Mrs. Charles-Ekenma Chioma Ugoeze, the head of administration of West African Examination Council, WAEC Owerri zone, Imo state the council said it could not verify whether a candidate bearing the name Ibe Gregory sat the 1992 November/December School Certificate Examination as such name was not found in its record.

It says rather the name that matched with the examination number 04834360 which Prof. Ibe parades is Ibe Joseph and not Ibe Gregory.

The court had mandated WAEC to produce the certified true copy of Prof. Gregory Ibe's academic record as a witness.

The affidavit reads in part, "That candidate 04834360 according to the Council's records belong to one IBE JOSEPH.

"That the West African Examination Council does not produce or custody duplicate copies of Notification of Results or certificates and is unable to provide any.

"That the physical entry forms for 1992 WASSCE examinations have been disposed of but the entry details for candidate 04834360 for the 1992 Nov./Dec. school certificate examination are as captured and attached herewith as Exhibit WA1.

"That the West African Examination Council certifies that the Candidate on its records is IBE JOSEPH with the entry details as attached.

"That the West African Examination Council states that by its records the Candidate with Examination Number 04834360 bears the name, IBE JOSEPH and not IBE GREGORY and that both names are not attached to the same Candidate's examination number.

"That this Statement on Oath is made in compliance with the Order of this Honourable Court.

"That I verily believe the above-stated facts to be true to the best of my knowledge as found in the West African Examination Council's records".

A 1992 true copy of the original certificate with the number 04834360 bore the name Ibe Joseph.

It was certified on Dec. 5, 2022 by one Akinola Omole, the Deputy Registrar, private candidates' examination department.

This may lay to rest the controversy surrounding the founder of Gregory University founder's academic record.

His victory as the governorship candidate of APGA is currently being contested as an Abuja Federal High Court earlier voided the primary election that produced him and directed a fresh primary within 14 days.

He has however appealed the judgement.

Politics / Group Alleges Assassination Attempt On Abia Assembly Candidate, Hon. Nwachukwu by Metrix147: 1:49pm On Jan 21, 2023
A socio-political group, Abia Youth Renaissance Movement, AYRM has alleged plots to assassinate the Action Peoples Party, APP House of Assembly candidate for Umuahia South constituency of Abia State, Hon. Chibuike Samuel Nwachukwu, called on the security agencies to intervene.

According to the group, the attempt started when Hon. Nwachukwu warned political parties to stop buying permanent voter's cards from locals.

The group in a statement on Saturday said, Hon. Nwachukwu has been receiving threatening messages and calls, warning him to withdraw from the House of Assembly race or "pay a heavy price for it".

The statement signed by the group Lead Coordinator, Chimamkpa Obidike read in part, "This press release has become very our last option in view of the increasing threats from people that appear like political opponents.

"We must also bring to the notice of the entire world, several occasions in which Hon. Nwachukwu has been waylaid by strange faces wielding dangerous weapons.

"Our suspicion is that his waxing popularity among his dear constituents has attracted this desperation to phase him out of existence. If anything should happen to him, the PDP and their leaders must be held responsible", the group said.

AYRM, therefore, called for increased security assistants around Hon. Nwachukwu, saying he needs to be alive and fulfil his divine destiny.

"His people want him for an assignment God has ordained him to carry out which by God's grace is nearer than before" the statement read further.

Crime / AIG Akinmoyede Urges Govt To Create Employment To Fight Cultism, Crimes by Metrix147: 12:08pm On Jan 21, 2023
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9, Umuahia, Isaac Akinmoyede, has called on the government to generate employment for youths and provide an atmosphere conducive to investments, curb cultism and other vices.

He made the call when the Abia chapter of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vicesbpaid a courtesy and advocacy visit to him in his office on Friday.

Zone 9 comprises Abia, Imo and Ebonyi commands.

According to Akinmoyede, one of those conducive atmospheres is security.

He said the police were trying all within their means to ensure the society became secured.

The police boss, who decried the rising cultism, said it had gone beyond the higher institutions and came down to secondary schools.

The former Commissioner of Police in Plateau and Imo, expressed regrets that even artisans were now involved in cultism, saying, “it is really a big headache.”

Akinmoyede said incessant strikes and other circumstances that kept students away from school, had always led to the rise in street cultism.

He said, “But thank God the schools are up and doing again, and it is believed that when schools are kept busy, there will be reduction in vices in the society.

“Policing is not an easy task, all what is required is continued support from members of the public and the POCACOV, to ensure that we are able to do our job in the best possible way.”

The AIG who commended the group for doing a lot for the police and the society, pledged his support “and in any way I know I can contribute towards the growth of POCACOV, I will do so.”

Earlier, the Abia Chairman of POCACOV, Mrs Adanma Odefa-Wachuku, who led the delegation, lauded the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, for setting up POCACOV.

Odefa-Wachuku described community policing as the present and future of policing “because all the criminals, cultists and others who engage in other vices are from families and communities.”

According to her, POCACOV has the same objective with the police, which is to curb cultism that is worsening on the streets.

ABN TV reports that POCACOV is a community-driven initiative of the Nigeria Police to sensitise different stakeholders to the dangers of cultism and other vices.

Politics / Abia 2023: Uche Ikonne Is Ill, Recovering Progressively — Ikpeazu (VIDEO) by Metrix147: 6:26pm On Jan 16, 2023
After months of speculations on the whereabouts of the People's Democratic Party, PDP governorship candidate in Abia state, Prof. Uche Ikonne, the state Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has finally opened up, saying the former ABSU vice chancellor is ill and recovering gradually and progressively.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ4FMmezlww
According to the Governor, Prof. Ikonne had attended some rallies organised by the PDP in Abia, including "the biggest rally that has happened" in Umuahia when the G-5 governors came to the state to flag off the campaigns.

Speaking on Flo FM radio programme on Monday monitored by ABN TV, Gov. Ikpeazu said Prof. Ikonne was also present in his house when a gala night was organized in honour of the G-5 Governors till 2am where he managed to give a speech "and then he took ill".

"It is unfortunate that he is lately indisposed but I want to report some progress and the progress is that Prof. Ikonne is recovering gradually and progressively.

"He has left the hospital and is going through convalescence. I am sure that he will be strong enough in the future to join," he said.

The governor insisted that his party the PDP is "very very powerful" in the state, maintaining that there is no other party that can boast of the strength PDP wields.

"Some of them may have supporters in one or two local governments but across Abia, they can't put 100 people each across Abia" he said.

He called of the people of the state to keep hope alive, saying the governorship candidate will soon bounce back, stating that his absence at this time will not define the progress of the campaigns or agenda of PDP in the state.

The governor said it might be the wish of their detractors that Prof. Ikonne's absence will linger, stating that when he (governor) was ill, permutations changed and people were allocating positions to themselves.

"I'm sure they even appropriated my wife to themselves," the governor said.

Politics / Tinubu Interested In Welfare Of Igbo Man, Needs Our Support — Kalu (Video) by Metrix147: 3:40pm On Jan 14, 2023
Member representing Bende federal constituency of Abia State and spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Kalu has said the presidential candidate of his party, the All Progressives Congress APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has the welfare of Igbo man at heart, calling on all sons and daughters of the region to support him win the Feb. 25 presidential election.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlKnjE2Kbuo

He said his support for Tinubu’s victory as a party man is not borne out of sentimental considerations but reality, stating that the GDP of an Igbo average Igbo man in Lagos has increased as a result of mechanisms Tinubu put in place while he was governor of the state.

Featuring on ABN TV's current affairs programme, Political Perspective, the lawmaker said Tinubu’s innovations have raised so many millionaires of Igbo extraction in Lagos State in the area of commerce and industry.

Rep. Kalu also said Tinubu has an enviable track record of appointing Igbo persons into his cabinet while he was governor, one of whom has ascended the ladder to become the director of Budget Office, a department in the ministry of finance.

"An office as strategic as that, Mr. Ben Nwabueze cut his teeth as a member of Tinubu’s cabinet which has seen him where he is today, he didn't give it to a Yoruba man, he didn't give it to Hausa man, he called my brother, a sound mind, a God-fearing man to hold that position.

"He has ruggedly held that position for the benefit of Nigeria through thick and thin, who discovered him? Not Igbo man but Tinubu.

"The Igbo man holds one of the most important positions in this country and that is Ben Nwabueze, he runs the country's budget, he decides what goes where, nominated, appointed, supported, showcased, started by Bola Ahmed Tinubu", he stated.

While agreeing that the Igbo needs to be president of the country as well, Rep. Kalu said the region needs the support of other geopolitical zones as votes from South East alone cannot produce the country's president.

According to him, without a structure that will embrace other regions, producing a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction will be difficult.

"Peter Obi is a good man, but you need more than a good man to be president, Peter Obi is educated, but you need more than an educated man to be president of Nigeria.

"I'm not talking about structure or no structure, how long has he built inter-regional politics? How much has he invested in making his name a household name in the hinterlands of the North, hinterlands of the Yoruba land, and other groups across Nigeria" referring to the presidential candidate of Labour Party who hails from the South East region.

While stating that Peter Obi has started a good step, he expressed doubt if the step is enough to produce the desired result in the upcoming election.

He called on the people of South East region to support Bola Tinubu to become president for the good of the region.

Member representing Bende federal constituency of Abia State, Rep. Benjamin Kalu said he went to the National Assembly to protect the interest of his people and not to sleep.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J56tUykk9Rg
He stated this while he featured on ABN TV's Political Perspective.

The lawmaker stressed that he started nursing his political ambition in 2001 in preparation for an election that took place in 2003 but he was told that he was too young.

According to him, he was never deterred from pursuing his ambition, as he waited for 17 years later, a period within which he garnered more experience from various arms of government, including local government where he served as chairman, later a member of State executive council, before he was eventually elected as a member of National Assembly in 2019.

“Project wise, with regards to the mandate of the constitution on this position which includes representation, lawmaking, and oversight function.

“We have done favorably well with regards to these three demands of our mandate because we have analyzed the needs of our people and have highlighted them before the parliament,” he said.

He assured the people of the constituency that as their representative, he will continue to seek solutions to their needs, stating that the regular town hall meeting which he put in place to engage stakeholders has been useful in carrying them along.

Politics / Power Shift To Abia North Not Negotiable, Must Not Be Truncated — Elders Vows by Metrix147: 10:10am On Jan 08, 2023
As Abia joins the rest of the states across the country to elect a governor in March this year, some elders in the State, senior lawyers, and academics have insisted that power must shift from the South of the state to the North.

They said this will be in the interest of equity, justice, and fairness and must not be truncated to maintain the peace and stability the state enjoys.

The ruling PDP had ignored calls to zone its governorship candidate to Abia North, and instead opted for Abia Central, a development some stakeholders believe undermines existing rotational arrangement in the state.

They took time to trace the history of zoning and democracy in the state and maintained that the palpable tension existing within the state political atmosphere was needless since history supports their insistence.

According to them, since Abia Central and South have had their eight years each in the governorship, power should shift to Abia North where it started in 1999.

Prof. Nwadinaobi Ugochukwu Esomono, Dr. Lawrence Ubani, ESV Olekanma, Dr. Amaka Onubogu, Pastor Caleb Awa, and Dr. Idika Kalu were amongst the 17 leaders and stakeholders that signed the document calling for respect for the zoning arrangement in the state.

The leaders said power returning to Abia North was sacrosanct, noting that it is the only way to ensure peace, justice, and fairness in the state.

The leaders contended that the established zoning formula has brought peace and created a conducive environment for the rapid political and socio-economic development of the state.

"Prominent Abia sons like the former President of the Senate, Adolphus Wabara, former Governor Theodore Orji, former SSG, Dr. Eme Okoro, and many others have spoken like prominent elders endorsing the return of the governorship back to Abia North Senatorial District. It is pertinent for other Abians to speak up now and support the return of power back to Abia North.

"Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu from Abia North in 1999 took the first slot, followed by Theodore Orji from Central Senatorial zone and now Dr. Victor Ikpeazu from Abia South Senatorial zone. Having witnessed this tradition persist, it has gone beyond mere politics, to a phenomenal entrenchment of power rotation within the political ecosystem of Abia State.

Politics / Mao Ohuabunwa A Colossal Failure, Never Attracted Arochukwu-ohafia Road — Kalu by Metrix147: 11:06am On Jan 04, 2023
Senator representing Abia North, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu has faulted the claim by a former Senator of the district, Mao Ohuabunwa that he (Mao) attracted the reconstruction of Arochukwu-Ohafia Road, saying there is no truth in such a claim.

Describing Ohuabunwa as a colossal failure who has no idea of what he was sent to Abuja to do, Sen. Kalu while featuring on a radio programme on Sun FM at his Igbere hometown monitored by ABN TV, said the road in question was attracted by him (Kalu) and the member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, Uko Nkole, adding that it was not abandoned as claimed by Ohuabunwa.

He said, "Mao Ohuabunwa never attracted any project. He was a colossal failure who did not know why he was sent to Abuja. Hon. Uko Nkole and I fought for Arochukwu Ohafia road. The contract we have is from Ohafia to Ihechiowa. There was crisis in the family of the contractor when he died and that affected the road project. Mao Ohuabunwa is a failure blaming me for insecurity in Abia North. He did not talk about those with the constitutional right to secure its citizens except trying to play politics with my name."

Politics / Ikpeazu: I'm Happy For Legacy We Have Entrenched In Abia by Metrix147: 9:15pm On Jan 02, 2023
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State says he is satisfied with the legacy of peace and harmony his administration has entrenched in the State which he said has given rise to the colourful celebrations, busy streets, while public places are swamped with an unprecedented influx of people from all over.

The governor in his new year message on Sunday said the peace and tranquility in Abia State is not a fluke or a by-the-way occurrence but a product of a deliberate State policy.

"Policy of justice and equity to all tendencies. Policy of accommodation and civility. Policy of mutual love and understanding. Policy of political tolerance and accommodation. Policy of nobody’s ambition is worth the peace of Abia State.

"After almost 8 years, I make bold to state that my greatest achievement as Governor is the fostering of an atmosphere of peace and unity in Abia State which has enabled tremendous developments across sectors", the governor said.

While stating that Abia is easily the most peaceful State in the South East and one of the most peaceful states in the whole Federation, Governor Ikpeazu thanked all the stakeholders, especially the security agencies and their personnel, who have played enormous roles to keep the peace in Abia State.

He also thanked Abians across every strata for being peaceful and law-abiding.

"We will work until our last day in office to continue to maintain the peace in the state. Above all, we are grateful to God as a people. As is inevitable, our second 4-year tenure will wind to an end on May 29 this year when I shall be handing over to the next elected Governor of Abia State. I however hasten to remind us all that Government is a continuum. It is a relay where you pass the baton to the next racer after you complete your own circle. I shall be completing my circle on May 29, 2023, and will –God keeping us alive – hand over to my successor.

"I am proud of the State I will be handing over to my successor. I state unequivocally that I will be handing over an Abia State far better than the one I met across diverse parameters.

"I state without reservation that our administration has made the most investment in critical infrastructure since the creation of Abia State. From roads to hospitals, schools to public buildings and other critical segments, we have definitely made indelible marks.

"Our administration is bequeathing the first fly-over in Abia State at Osisioma. Our administration has built the highest number of roads in Abia State since inception. To date, we have completed more than 160 roads and counting.

The governor who is seeking election to represent Abia South in 2023 said he understands the needs of the people in terms of infrastructure, contact utilization, and drawing attention to the critical needs of the people and therefore it will be a disservice if he does listen to the call to represent the district in the Senate.

INEC Enlists Sam Onuigbo As Abia Central APC Senatorial Candidate

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has enlisted the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency of Abia State, Rep. Sam Onuigbo as the authentic candidate of All Progressives Congress APC for Abia Central senatorial district.

This follows the ruling of Court of Appeal Owerri division which pronounced Onuigbo the authentic candidate for the senatorial district.

The court has sacked Hon. Emeka Atuma as the candidate of Abia Central Senatorial District, saying the election that produced him did not follow due process.

A check by ABN TV on INEC list indicates that Hon. Atuma's name has been replaced with Rep. Onuigbo.

The lawmaker has since hailed the Appeal Court ruling which pronounced him the authentic candidate for the senatorial district, saying it is an indication that the judiciary remains the only hope of common man.

Politics / I Don't Assist Those Without Pvcs, They're Part Of Our Problem — Udensi (video) by Metrix147: 1:36pm On Dec 23, 2022
A governorship aspirant in Abia and Interpol Systems Consultant, Sir Chikwe Udensi has said he is not helping able-bodied persons who do not have their permanent voter's card, saying it is an act of irresponsibility.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj0byc2kNP0
He said such persons are part of the problem the country is having, insisting that he is serious and unapologetic with the decision.

Speaking on Love FM's Open Parliament in Umuahia on Wednesday monitored by ABN TV, the chieftain of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA in responding to questions on those qualified to benefit from his second phase of retirees and senior citizens palliative ongoing in the state said only those who have their PVCs are qualified to benefit.

According to him, there is a problem of bad leadership in the land, which can only be changed through a democratic process.

This change he said can only be achieved through voting, noting that those who are presented with an opportunity to make positive changes in the land but refused to do so are part of the problem by not having their PVCs to vote.

"If you are a retiree, and you don't have your PVC, you are part of the problem, you are happy that people are suffering. You are happy that we are in this situation.

"So you must have to have the tool, you must have to have the power to change. If you don't have that power to change, then you are part of our problem," he said.

He insists that only elderly persons and retirees with their PVCs and corresponding identity cards will be attended to in the charity outreach which involved distribution of cash and food items.

Sir Udensi said evil has persisted in the land because of the silence of the good people, maintaining that this will not be tolerated anymore..

"Perhaps you are even worse than the person doing the evil, because you have chance to change the evil", he said.
