The Lagos state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state on his 53rd birthday.

The party said the Lagos state Governor is doing a good job, adding that he is making sure his campaign promises are fulfilled.

The PDP also commended Ambode for using his birthday celebration to raise funds for the treatment of cancer patients.

The spokesman of the PDP in Lagos state, Gani Taofik said “The PDP opines that the governor has attempted to justify his election.

“Observing these attempts, such as in the area of road rehabilitation with pedestrian bridge construction, we will give the governor the benefit of the doubt that he is serious about serving the general interest and not parochial or APC interest as his predecessor did.

“We will keep a tab on his governance and commend or condemn same as applicable. In this period of his birthday celebration, we want to commend him and hope that he sees this assessment as a challenge for him to perform better.”

Taofik also added that “The PDP wishes the governor good health, sound mind and, above all, the fear of God necessary for him to be responsive, productive and just to all. Happy birthday and many happy returns.

“More disturbing to us is that the governor’s lowest point at this time is his neglect to conduct election into the local government councils. This is long overdue. He should allow the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission to announce the election date this week to serve as his birthday gift to Lagosians.”

The EFCC, on Thursday June 16, 2016 obtained conviction in a case of Money Laundering brought against one Samuel Duru before Justice M.N Yinusa of the Federal High Court, Enugu. Duru who was arrested by Nigeria Customs Services at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu was subsequently handed to EFCC for prosecution.

His offence was in contravention of Section 12 of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2011. He was charged for failure to declare the sum of Eighty Six Thousand United States Dollars ($86,000.00) out of a total sum of $96 thousand United States Dollars while travelling to China in December 2015.

The warehouse of MTN, one of Nigeria’s mobile network providers, off Acme Road (behind Zenith Bank) went up in flames today. The fire started at the early hours, persisted till afternoon and escalated into a serious inferno that brazed parts of the building roof.

It took efforts of two fire service trucks to put the fire out and several police officers to control the crowd.

Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has declared Monday, June 13, as public holiday in commemoration of the annulment of the June 12, 1993, Presidential Election.

A statement by the Special Adviser, Communication and Strategy to the Governor, Mr. Yomi Layinka, conveyed the governor’s decision, on Sunday.

June 12 remains a watershed in the history of the country, because of the significance of the day in the nation’s democratic journey, having broken all ethnic and religious barriers.

The annulled election is yet to be matched in terms of freeness, fairness, transparency, openness and widespread acceptability.

Much as the electoral umpire that midwifed subsequent elections had tried, the annulled election remains the best in terms of organization and no system adopted for the conduct of subsequent elections is yet to match Option A4 used to conduct the June 12 election.

Besides, the resolve of Nigerians to put aside their differences and troop out en masse to collectively vote for a positive change was a demonstration of the fact that Nigerians were not ready to negotiate the unity of the country even in the face of diversity.

That the symbol of the annulled election, Chief MKO Abiola, opted to pay the supreme price to defend his mandate has deepened democracy and the price he paid is what the comfort the political leaders are enjoying up till today.

I want to, once again, urge the Federal Government to immortalize and officially recognize Abiola as a former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to confer on him the highest honour in the land befitting of a former president.

Political leaders should be prepared to leave their comfort zones and be prepared to make sacrifices to defend the democracy we are enjoying today and should not allow parochial interest to overshadow the collective interest of the electorate.

There is no doubt that Abiola won the election, despite failed attempts by those that contested the election with him to twist facts and re-write history.

We must keep the memory of Abiola alive and the least we can do is to continue to commemorate the day and bring out its fond memories as a lesson in electoral transparency and openness.

We should not forget him as he remains one of the greatest martyrs this country has ever produced, so that generations yet unborn will know that somebody laid down his life in defence of democracy and the rule of law.

His death in custody of the then Federal Government is known to God and may his soul continue to rest in perfect peace.

Another shocking loss has hit Nigerian football in the form of the death of Amodu Shuiabu, former Nigerian Super Eagles coach.

Last year, he was appointed again to help the Super Eagles qualify for the 2015 AFCON after the late Stephen Keshi was sacked.

Not too much is known about the Edo state born coach but he has done remarkably well with his contribution to the game in Nigeria.

He has however, always had a running battle with the Nigeria Football federation (NFF).

He led Nigeria to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but he was fired after the team finished in third-place at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola.

For people who don’t know too much about him, here are 6 things you can know about the coach’s career so far.

1. Before his last appointment, Amodu had coached Nigeria on three different occasions- 1998–1999, 2001–2002 and 2008–2010

2. He was appointed as Head Coach of the Nigerian national side in April 2008, and was sacked on 6 February 2010 despite reaching third place with the national side in the 2010 African Cup of Nations.

3. He was once demoted to serve as the coach of the home-based Eagles.

4. Amodu led Nigeria to the AFCON bronze medal at Mali 2002 and Angola 2010. – Other accomplishments include Nigerian FA Cup titles with BCC Lions of Gboko and El Kanemi Warriors on multiple occasions.

5. He was appointed technical director of Nigeria’s national teams in May 2013.

6. In November he was named Technical Director of Bendel Insurance F.C.

7. Amodu has coached in Nigeria and overseas. They include: Shooting Stars, BCC Lions, El Kanemi Warriors, Sharks F.C and Orlando Pirates of South Africa.
