Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has endorsed four-year tenure for Local Government chairmen and other elected council representatives. The governor signed into law the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) Amendment law, Local Government Administration Amendment law and the Local Government Election Tribunal Second Amendment law on Thursday at the State House, Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, paving way for four-year tenure for council chairmen and others. The State House of Assembly had recently approved the four-year tenure for council chairmen and other representatives. The governor’s signing it into law on Thursday formally endorsed the approval. The four-year tenure is under the Local Government Administration Amendment law. While signing the three bills into law, Ambode said the purpose of the Local Government Administration law is to provide for local government system, establishment and to regulate administration of local authorities and other connected purposes. “One of the major highlights of this amendment is the increase of the tenure of the Chairman and the Counselors from three years to four years commencing from the date of taking oath of office,” he said. The governor added that the essence of law in every society was the regulation of human conduct, saying that upon his assumption of office, his administration identified the need to improve on laws that impacted on people’s lives, “particularly that are relevant to us at the local government level which is unarguably the most critical level of governance in the state. It is in this vein, that these laws have been amended to meet current realities. “The LASIEC amendment law seeks to create the commission to regulate election matters. The need to amend the law arose as a result of current trend in the political space to prevent a laccuna in certain instances. “Some of the highlights of the amendment include the empowering of the Commission to review the de-alienation of wards in each Local government of the state at intervals of every 10 years and division of each Local government into not less than 10 wards and not more than 20 wards,” he said. He said that section two of the amendment replaced section 5 of the principal, saying that “A new section 62 created by the amendment provides that the Vice Chairman elected with the Chairman would be sworn in as Chairman in the event of the death of an elected Chairman before been sworn in. “The amendment to the law has also been proactive as Section 64 now provides that incumbent Chairman who wins a re-run election will have a period spent in office prior to the re-run. Local government Election Tribunal second Amendment law, the highlights of this amendment is to empower the tribunal to allow the time for doing any act or taking any proceedings or such terms as the justice of the case may require, provided that the enlargement of time shall not be granted to extend the life span of the petition beyond 45 days. “Therefore, more time will now be available for consideration of election petitions,” he said, while commending the Lagos State House of Assembly for the speedy consideration and passage of the laws. The governor urged residents to see the passage of the laws as a further institutionalisation of the rule of law in the state and commitment of his administration to local government reforms, as the local government system was crucial to grassroots development, sayng that the new laws were clear demonstration of a new golden era where the local government system would experience renaissance to create prosperity and good governance for the people. “By the assent of these bills into law, LASIEC Is empowered to commence necessary administrative processes that will translate to the composition of the local government structure,” he said http://www.metronaija.com/2016/05/ambode-endorses-4-year-term-for-lg.html

According to Nigeria's former Aviation Minister, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, President Muhammadu Buhari is no match for his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, when it comes to managing the affairs of the nation. “In less than one year I have been proved right in my continuous assertion that when it comes to running the affairs of our country President Goodluck Jonathan is by far the better man and the PDP by far the better party," he said in an article. “That is what is paining them and that is what they cannot bear to hear. Now they seek vengeance and they wish to silence me yet I am prepared for the worse. “The only thing that I underestimated was the high degree of malice that our president has for all his political adversaries and critics, the inexplicable pleasure that he derives in inflicting pain on the innocent, the strange delight he harbours in indulging in wickedness and the monumental incompetence he displays when it comes to administering the affairs of our nation. “In my world, a man is measured not by his ability to kill his subjects, to destroy his political opponents, to shed the blood of the defenceless, to throw the innocent in dungeons, to humiliate and persecute his adversaries, to abuse power and to pervert the judicial system but by the level of his humanity and his sense of decency, fairness, justice and restraint,” he said. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/05/jonathan-beats-buhari-hands-down-as.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State on Sunday announced a new minimum wage of N25,000 with effect from May 1, 2016 for workers. Oshiomhole who was addressing a rally organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), to mark this year’s Workers’ Day at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, announced the increment from the present N18, 000 minimum. “With effect from today, the new minimum wage for government workers shall now be N25,000, and the new minimum wage will cut across board”, the former trade union leader said. The workers who before the announcement had expressed dissatisfaction over their poor welfare jumped for joy and happily marched in appreciation of the new minimum wage as announced by the Governor. Earlier in their respective speeches, the Chairman of NLC, Comrade Emma Ademokun and his TUC counterpart, Comrade Ohue Marshal, had expressed concern over a number of problems affecting Nigerians. Some of them are the persistent scarcity of petroleum product, epileptic power supply and illegal electricity tariff increase. They also mentioned spiralling increase in cost of living, insecurity, kidnapping, rampaging herdsmen, Boko Haram, irregular payment of salaries resulting in accumulation of arrears, growing rate of unemployment with the attendant social vices. The Workers’ Day rally was however marred with low turn out of workers. The new wage minimum wage comes at a time no fewer than 27 states in Nigeria are finding it difficult to pay workers. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/05/oshiomhole-increases-minimum-wage-from.html

Nigeria spends N165 billion annually to import fruit juice, the President of the Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN), Dr Frank Jacobs, has said. In a paper presented at a workshop organised by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) in Owerri on Friday, Jacobs noted that in spite of the high rate of fruit production and a thriving juice market, the country imported fruits concentrates. In the paper entitled “Promoting Investments in Concentrate Production,’’ he said the situation resulted in an estimated loss of one billion dollars annually. Jacobs, represented by Mr Nwabueze Anyanwu, observed that Nigerian farmers also lost 60 per cent of their produce as a result of lack of processing facilities. He listed other factors to include limited demand and logistics challenges such as handling and transporting the fruits to the urban centres. “Importation of concentrates has adversely affected local fruits cultivation for juice processing,’’ the MAN president said. He also said that the continued dependence on massive importation of concentrates by industries was not healthy for the nation’s economy. He said that the availability of raw materials, a large market, a ready domestic concentrate and good export potentials should serve as incentives to attract investment in the project. Jacobs said that the challenge of poor concentrates in the country could be overcome with improved high-yield seedlings, technology and technical services and better education and enlightenment for farmers. He noted that the recent drive by the Federal Government to diversify the economy, encourage resource-based industrialisation and backward integration should provide the needed impetus to attract investors. He urged the government to ensure policy consistency to avoid a repetition of policy summersaults of yesteryears. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/nigeria-spends-n165b-yearly-on-imported.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

He made the declaration weekend, at the 10th Anniversary of St Anthony’s Catholic Church, Uromi, where the Governor was given an award for his services to the Church. Anenih who referred to the Governor as his son, said a recent health challenges he suffered made him realise the need to rise above politics and embrace peace with all men. “I was in St. Paul’s Church in Benin, and as my son, Comrade Adams said, we were all there appreciating the efforts of the Archbishop. “I want to say this, it is not because Adams is here. Last night, I was telling my wife that I met Adams in the church, and with my immediate medical experience, I have decided to forgive all those who offended me. And I specifically mentioned Adams. “Adams, without you saying it, I have forgiven you. As you said when you were in labour, as President, you were my son and you know it. You came into politics and you remain my son. So, the common cook that used to cook ogbono soup for us is still there,” he said. Earlier in his speech, Governor Oshiomhole who could be best described as Anenih’s worst political enemy who taunted him for several years, referred to him as “my daddy. “ He thanked the church for reuniting him with top members of the opposition party, just as he lauded their efforts in nation building. “I believe that, the fact that Nigerians live in relative peace and harmony in spite of the failings and weaknesses of political leadership at all levels, is due to the power of your intercession, the power of your prayers. “We cannot thank you enough for your prayers and your support in spite of our weaknesses,” he said. The Governor praised the Catholic Church for bringing people of different political persuasions together under one roof for the Church programme. “Yesterday, I found myself sitting in the front row, and then I realized that most of those drivers and shakers of politics and ‘politricking’ in Edo State, are all Catholics. That, for me, is revealing. “For me, the church has caused all of us to reunite in the State. So, I reunite with my daddy Chief Tony Anenih and several other PDP leaders and APC leaders. And the Catholic Church brought together the national Chairman of APC sitting side-by-side with the national leader of PDP. “May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ continue to moderate our actions and remind us of our oneness, of our commonality and of our shared commitment to work together to uplift our state and our great nation.” Commenting on the award conferred on him, the Governor thanked the Church, saying “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the honour done to me by being invited to receive an award.” The Church anniversary was attended by Mr Anselm Ojezua, APC Chairman, Edo State, Mr Dan Orbih, PDP Chairman, Edo State, former Governor of the State, Prof Oserheimen Osunbor as well as former Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, among others. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/photo-tony-anenih-forgives-oshiomhole.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Following the incident, the matter was reported to the police who assisted and recovered her body. Gbenga was briefly detained and released and was asked to go and bury the baby. Thankfully the white flags were raised yesterday (Monday, April 19, 2016) in the battle between Linda Ikeji and Wizkid. We hope this is the last of this matter. After a month of nasty shots online Linda Ikeji and Wizkid met at the office of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police. According to the blogger’s side of events Wizkid apologized for his outburst and wrote an undertaken. Now the Internet drama is all over and we hope both parties remain calm and don’t do anything provocative. Apart from us being jaded from the online war, Linda Ikeji and Wizkid surely have better things to do than diss each other on the Internet. What lessons can we learn though from the whole issue. What could have Linda Ikeji and Wizkid done differently? First of all, even though blogging doesn’t have to follow all the principles of journalism it is necessary that when posting any sensitive story undeniable proof should be made available. In Linda Ikeji’s case when she reported that Wizkid had been told to evacuate his mansion in Lekki she failed to give us a copy of the quit notice. Since she and Wizkid already had a ‘history’ it would have been better if she had concrete proof. When she posted the story about Wizkid some felt it was a witch hunt. Linda Ikeji has a job to do no doubt but in blogging about certain things she needs irrefutable proof. If she doesn’t do so her credibility could take some damage. Also it is time for Linda Ikeji to know that a lot of attention is on her and her blog. She can’t keep operating like the small time blogs out there. When she got the Wizkid tip she should have reached out to his management or PR to get his other side of the story. This would have given her story balance. Well after this episode I guess Linda Ikeji would polish her articles a bit more. As for Wizkid his anger and tongue nearly put him in serious trouble. I have said it over and over again- it’s not everything you respond to. His rant at Linda Ikeji was vulgar and could have ripped him of his endorsements also. Celebs should learn to keep quiet and let their PR person do his/her work. If Wizkid can’t control his tongue it will cost him bitterly one day. Linda Ikeji's home play If Wizkid wanted to respond he should have released a well thought out response and not a knee jerk reaction. After this debacle with Linda Ikeji who dragged him police we hope he learns to keep quiet. Also it is time for Linda Ikeji to be more professional. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/things-we-can-learnt-from-linda.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Alhaji Ahmed Song, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa, has dismissed speculations of split in the state chapter of the party. He described the rumours as `product of mischief designed to pit former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against President Muhammadu Buhari.’ In a statement he issued to newsmen on Tuesday in Yola, Song expressed concern that some people in the party were bent on creating disharmony between Atiku and Buhari. ``It is worrisome that there are people in the APC who are determined to create imaginary schism and disharmony in the party to suit their mischievous agenda of drawing a wedge between Buhari and Abubakar." He accused those peddling the rumours of not wishing to see harmonious relationship Buhari and Atiku. He added that they are determined to invent crisis of confidence between the two leaders at all costs, even if one doesn't exist. Song declared that no committed member of the APC would devote needless energies to create distrust, division and disunity between and among the leadership of the party in the state. He warned that the dangerous politics of creating imaginary division within the party and among its key leaders would ultimately harm the party if left unchecked. Song, a close associate of Atiku, said that the former Vice President enjoys cordial and mutually respectful relationship with Buhari. ``Rumour merchants will not succeed in their selfish agenda at the expense of the party,’’ he said. http://m.guardian.ng/news/no-division-in-adamawa-apc-says-party-chieftain/

The Lagos State Government has announced that an additional foot bridge would be constructed at Ojota bus stop on Ikorodu road, to complement the existing one in order to contain the recent upsurge in usage by Pedestrians. The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the decision arose out of the need to reduce the long time being currently spent on the queue by people using the bridge. He said the construction of the additional bridge has become necessary after the newly erected New Jersey Wall on the median of the expressway has effectively curtailed indiscriminate dropping and picking of passengers along the highway as well as dangerous crossing of the road on foot by commuters. He reiterated that the need for the construction of the wall, which is similar to the same measure taken between Ketu and Mile 12 axis of the road is meant to reduce fatalities on the part of commuters crossing the highway and the traffic gridlock caused by commercial buses and motorcycles engaging in indiscriminate dropping and picking of passengers. While commending the orderly conduct of commuters in the usage of the bridge, the statement urged them to be patient with government until the new one is constructed, adding that the project is expected to be delivered within three months. Ayorinde added that the new bridge will accommodate the special needs of the physically challenged, for their ease of movement.
