Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday in Beijing offered 15 million dollars agricultural assistance to Nigeria for the establishment of 50 Demonstration Farms across the country.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mallam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.

The statement said President Jinping announced the offer at a meeting between Nigerian delegation and high-ranking Chinese government officials in Beijing.

The offer was in response to President Buhari’s desire to make Nigeria self-sufficient in food production.

It added that President Jinping agreed that Nigeria’s chosen path of development through economic diversification was the best way to go.

“To help Nigeria achieve this, China promised to fully support the country through infrastructural development and capacity building,’’ it said.

The statement said that President Jinping also expressed the readiness of China to set up major projects in Nigeria.

It listed the projects to include refineries, power plants, mining companies, textile manufacturing and food processing industries as soon as the enabling environment was provided by the Federal Government.

The statement said that China and Nigeria also agreed to strengthen military and civil service exchanges as part of a larger capacity-building engagement.

“In line with this, China offered to raise its scholarship awards to Nigerian students from about 100 to 700 annually.

“In addition, 1,000 other Nigerians are to be given vocational and technical training by China annually,’’ the statement added.

The statement said President Jinping applauded the war against corruption being waged by Buhari.

The Chinese leader assured the Nigerian president that Nigeria would always have a special place in the affairs of the Peoples Republic of China.

After the meeting, President Buhari directed that technical committees be immediately established to finalise discussions on new joint Nigeria/China rail, power, manufacturing, agricultural and solid mineral projects.

According to the statement, the technical committees will conclude their assignments before the end of May.

The statement said President Buhari welcomed China’s readiness to assist Nigeria in her bid to rapidly industrialize and join the world’s major economies.

Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Zone C (South East) has received with shock, the report of the kidnap of Channels Television Correspondent in Owerri, Imo State, Mr. Tope Kuteye by 3am Monday April 11, 2016. Kuteye was reportedly kidnapped at his residence in Owerri.

We condemn the kidnap of this innocent citizen and journalist. Kuteye is neither a politician nor a money-bag business man. It therefore baffles the Union as to why he should be the target of this dastardly act.

We therefore appeal to the abductors of Mr. Kuteye to release him unconditionally without delay.

We similarly call on law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned to secure the release of Kuteye soonest should his abductors hedge.

In furtherance of the determination of the Lagos State Government to ensure free flow of traffic across the metropolis, the officials of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Nigerian Police on Monday embarked on massive enforcement of the directive banning indiscriminate queues at petrol stations.

The RRS team led by the Commander, ACP Olatunji Disu enforced the directive on the long stretch of Lagos-Abeokuta expressway starting from U-Turn Bus stop down to Toll Gate which is the boundary between Lagos and Ogun States.

The team specifically removed from the road all vehicles forming more than one lane while queuing for fuel, a development which greatly reduced the traffic gridlock caused by the indiscriminate queues.

The team also worked on the long stretch of Iju Road from Pen Cinema down to Fagba Bus stop and some parts of Ikeja axis.

Besides, the team apprehended some commercial bus drivers and private motorists flouting the Lagos State Traffic Law, as well as other environmental offences.

Earlier, the team visited Ojota, Mile 12, Ketu and some other major areas on Ikorodu Road where the usage of pedestrian bridge was enforced, thereby maintaining law and order.


It would be recalled that after the iron bars were erected on the Ikorodu Road by the Lagos State Government to stop a situation whereby some pedestrians were crossing the expressway with attendant traffic gridlock and risk of lives, some recalcitrant pedestrians were removing the iron bars to cross the expressway, a development which necessitated the enforcement.

The Chairman of Nigeria's Senate Committee of ICT and Cybercrime, Dr. Fatai Buhari has stated that he'd have resigned if he was facing trial like the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki.

"I hate to talk about personalities but on issues, but on this matter as a person I would have done the same thing the Prime Minister of Iceland did, I will resign from that position whether I am right or wrong” he said on Saturday in Ibadan.

Speaking on the fuel crisis, Senator Buhari opined that the country needs to hasten action to deregulate the sector. “We are in this mess because of our poor maintenance culture, if we had maintained the existing refineries in the country, we would not have relied on imported refined products for sustenance ”.

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria said the military authorities have given it the body of a member Idris Khalid to bury.

It was the second body given to the movement, the members of which are known as Shiites.

IMN claimed the military killed over 1,000 members and carried the bodies away last December after soldiers brutally attacked the sect in Zaria over the allegation that Shitte members blocking a highway in Zaria were planning to kill the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai.

Idris Khalid, 50, was buried according to Islamic rites at Tudun wada cemetery ground in Kaduna with hundreds of people in attendance, IMN spokesman Ibrahim Musa said.

“He was shot and seriously wounded when the military opened fire on members of the Islamic Movement at Sheikh Zakzaky’s residence in Gyallesu, Zaria.

“Though he didn’t die on the spot, he was among those arrested by the army and handed over to the police in Kaduna.

“However, after just 3 days in police custody, he was pronounced dead, most probably due to lack of medical attention”. Musa said the body was not released until yesterday.

Idris Khalid, a native of Duhu village in Katsina, was survived by three wives. He had no child.

Human Rights watch, an international human rights group was reported to have said that over 300 people were killed by the military in Zaria between 12-14 December, 2015.

The military disputed the number of people it killed, with the Chief of army staff, Lt. Gen. Buratai telling National Human Rights commission in Abuja that only seven people were killed.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria has published a list of almost a thousand people who have been declared missing since the army’s pogrom in Zaria.

Among its demands is that the army should hand over the corpses of those it killed to their relatives for proper Islamic burial.

The Panama Papers leak is the unprecedented leak of a whopping 11.5 million files from the database of the world's fourth biggest offshore law firm, Mossack Fonseca.

The law firm had helped clients to register offshore entities, some of which are then used to launder money, evade tax and dodge sanctions.

The people caught in this scandal are not necessarily all treasury thieves and looters; some are businessmen merely fulfilling the capitalist cliché of cheating the system by avoiding taxes.

A 25 year old man identified as Ajayi Kehinde, drowned on Monday April 4th after he parked his SUV close at the Oke Afa canal in Isolo and jumped into the canal. According to PM news, the identity of the man was known through the vehicle particulars in the SUV.


The reason for the bizarre action is not yet known as no relative of the deceased has been located. Also the body of the deceased has not been recovered as it seemed the police do not have the necessary equipment to do so.
The Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Dolapo Badmos confirmed the incident. She said the police were making efforts to recover his body and that investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Although the United States has commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for its efforts in containing Boko Haram insurgency, it warns that the militants are still a threat not only in Nigeria, but in the African region.

US Secretary of state, Senator John Kerry gave this view in Washington at the start of a U.S.- Nigeria Bi-National Commission meeting.

Kerry condemned the Bokoharam activities, promising U.S. support to finish off the sect and end its terrorist activities.

“Under President Buhari, Nigeria has been taking the fight to Boko Haram and it has reduced Boko Haram’s capacity to launch full-scale attacks.

“However, the group still remains a threat – a serious threat – to the entire region.

“And in recent months, our governments have been collaborating on new ways to institute security measures, including counter-IED equipment, improved information sharing, and training and equipping two infantry battalions.

“Now, I want to be clear, this aid is predicated on the understanding that, even when countering a group as ruthless as Boko Haram, security forces have a duty to set the standard with respect to human rights. One abuse does not excuse another.

Property worth millions of naira was destroyed by fire at the Birnin Kebbi Central Market in the early hours of Saturday, the second fire incident in a Nigerian market in 12 hours.

The fire like the one that affected the Abubakar Rimi Market in Kano, also began around midnight.

Alhaji Abubakar Bandam, the chairman of the central market management explained that the source of the inferno was yet to be determined.

He said the management of the market was working closely with security agencies to identify the cause, just as he commended the state Department of Fire Service for its prompt response.

Alhaji Bello Zagga, the state Director of Fire Service, told NAN that the fire lasted for several hours because the firefighting vans did not have easy access to the spot of the inferno.

Officials from the state government, led by the Chief of Staff of the government house, Alhaji Suleiman Argungu, and the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Mohammad Bashar, have visited the scene to sympathies with traders who lost their goods.

Gov. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa state has dissolved the management of all local government councils in the state.

According to Alhaji Aliyu Ahmed, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the dissolution followed the expiration of the tenure of the councils on March 24.

Al Makura has directed the affected council chairmen to handover their official vehicles at the Government House with immediate effect.

The statement also directed the chairmen to handover other government properties in their possession to the Directors of Personnel Management at their respective councils.

The State High Court had on Wednesday in Lafia dismissed the suit filed by the sacked council chairmen seeking elongation of their tenure from two to three years.

To commemorate the Easter celebration, the Lagos State Government has lifted the order on restriction of movement during tomorrow's environmental sanitation exercise. A statement issued by the Office of the Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment, Babatunde Adejare, stated that despite the lifting of the restriction order, Lagosians are still expected to observe the monthly exercise by cleaning their homes and immediate environment.

Nigerian army said its troops have rescued 16 women abducted by Boko Haram elements in Adamawa state.

The women were abducted on the outskirts of the town on Wednesday when they went to fetch firewood and water.

Captain A.O Badare of the 28 Task Force Brigade in Mubi said the women, including two girls have been rescued.

Fadare that soldiers rescued the women while pursuing the insurgents.

Fadare, who did not give the number of the rescued women, however, said he was still trying to verify.

“I am still trying to verify from Madagali as you know, the operation is still on,” Fadare told the News Agency of Nigeria.

The Kano State Hisbah Board said it had arrested 31 young girls for alleged involvement in immoral acts.

Malam Sani Tanko, the Public Relations Officer of the board, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Friday that the suspects were apprehended in a Hotel during a special operation at Sabon Gari area in Kano metropolis.

“All the 31 arrested suspects were females and mostly teenagers. “Our men were able to arrest these girls at Sabon Gari area in Kano at about 3 p.m. on Monday.

“We screened them and immediately released those who are first-time offenders on bail while those who are habitual offenders were referred to the legal department for further legal action,” he said. He added that those whose parents refused to claim them would be taken to court for proper prosecution.

“We always encourage good deeds and discourage bad ones, “ Tanko said. He advised parents to ensure proper upbringing of their children to enable them to become useful members of the society and contribute to the development of the country .
