One of the female hostels in Yaba College of Technology in Lagos has been engulfed by fire.

According to The News Agency of Nigeria, the fire which engulfed ‘Bakassi building’ has raged for two hours before the arrival of the fire service which is trying to put out the blaze.

The fire could not be put out immediately because the college Fire Service ran of water.

There are however no details as to the number of casualties (if any) as the fire has been put out.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday applauded Governor Oshiomhole for the people-oriented projects commissioned at the twilight of his administration, said the completion of the projects at a time when Nigeria was facing economic challenges was an eloquent display of astute, prudent and visionary leadership.

Governor Ambode, who spoke when he commissioned the newly rebuilt Itohan Girls Grammar School, Sapele Road, Benin City, to mark the end of Governor Adams Oshiomhole's administration, also announced full university scholarship to two best graduating students of the school.

Alluding to the fact that education is the bedrock of the society, Governor Ambode said the commissioning of secondary school with modern facilities and top class university underscored the importance which Governor Oshiomhole attached to education.

He said: "Governor Oshiomhole understands leadership and the needs of his people. He understands the concept of inclusive governance and making sure nobody is left behind. The projects commissioned today have demonstrated the government of inclusion which this administration has been running.

"This is very remarkable and it is very significant because this is one Governor that actually started well and is ending very strong. Roads have been commissioned in areas that needed government attention and presence.

“We are very sure these roads will open up communities and even joining three local governments together and also accelerate growth and development," Governor Ambode said.

He also said it was gratifying that the commissioning of the university came at a time when the country was in dire need of top class tertiary institution, adding that the Governor deserved commendation for a dream come true.

"Governor Oshiomhole has set high standards in Edo State and he has actually and visibly turn around the fortunes of Edo State. Posterity and all Nigerians will remember comrade Oshiomhole very favourably.

"The truth is this: our country needs people like Comrade Oshiomhole especially at this critical time in our history," Governor Ambode said.

Governor Ambode, who was the National Campaign Committee of All Progressives Congress (APC) for Edo Governorship election, also congratulated the people of the State for electing Mr. Godwin Obaseki, saying that the decision would further ensure that Edo remained on the path of progress.

Earlier, Governor Oshiomhole said the idea of the University came out of the need to address educational tourism, and as well provide world class University education to both the rich and the poor.

Governor Oshiomhole, who described Governor Ambode as a financial guru and now rugged and dogged Governor, said Lagos and Edo had special traditional and political relationship, adding that most of the innovations introduced in Edo were copied from Lagos, and that Governor Ambode was invited to commission the school on account of the fact that he has been working assiduously to transform Lagos.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday visited the camp of the Super Eagles who are currently training for their qualifying match against Algeria.

Osinbajo arrived shortly after 6pm, watched the players train and spoke briefly with them.

Meanwhile, Leon Balogun and Brown Ideye missed training on Tuesday.

Both Balogun and Ideye had a light workout with the rest of the squad in the morning, but didn’t do more than that as they watched the rest of the team continue with the session.

The Presidency on Thursday commended the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki. for initiating the reform of the nation’s budgeting process. It said the executive fully supports the move.





Minister of Budget and National Planning, Mr. Udoma Udo Udoma, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Sanni Onogu, disclosed this during the formal presentation of the report of the Technical Committee on the Budget Reform Process in Nigeria, inaugurated by the Senate President on July 25, 2016.





“This initiative of Your Excellency, the Senate President, is an initiative that has the full support of the executive,” Udoma said. “We believe that the budget and the budget process is something that we have to work on together closely and collaboratively.





“Consequently, your initiative to look at the reform of the process is an initiative that we welcome and which was why the Director General of the Budget Office, with my authority, participated fully in the deliberations.





“As the Senate Leader indicated, the success of any budget depends on very close collaboration between the executive and the legislature. I believe that this process that you have embarked on and the reforms will help to smoothen some of the issues that arise from time to time when we are considering the budget,” he said.





In his remarks after receiving the report from the Chairman of the Technical Committee and Leader of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume, the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, described the report as one of the most important exercises of the Senate so far, while commending the Committee for complying with the stipulated time frame for the exercise.





Saraki also commended the Minister of Budget and National Planning for his participation in the processes that led to the report, saying, “I think as a country, what we are doing today is long overdue for us to have reviewed the budget process. I think we are truly building a solid foundation for the years ahead.





“I agree that the recommendations require the review of certain laws, but I think there are some of them that have to do with processes. I think we can immediately begin to implement those that have to do with processes.





“As we all know, for many years, this has been an area of acrimony and disaffection between the two arms of government which is mainly due to ambiguities in some of the laws and processes,” Saraki said.





The Senate President specifically noted the recommendation in the report dealing with pre-budget participation of the public in the process as he said “there is really very little participation of the public in the process”.





“We have public hearings on so many things but the most important law that we have to pass, has very little participation of the public. I am happy it was captured in this report that even when we do the review of the budget, the public should also participate,” he stated.





Earlier, Senator Ndume noted that the low development indicators and lackluster performance of the economy in general are not unconnected with inefficient and ineffective public financial management and budgeting in particular.





He noted that the broad objective of the exercise is to address the pitfalls and challenges in the budget process and significantly improve formulation, enactment, implementation, monitoring and evaluation with a view to improving budget performance and development outcomes.

In what appeared to be a clampdown on criminals operating in Oshodi, prelude to the festive seasons, the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested six teenage mobile phone thieves in Oshodi.

The suspects were all apprehended the same day in Oshodi while brazenly dispossessing commuters of their belongings.

The suspects; Ganiyu Rahman Sadiq Adebayo (15); Timilehin Oluwaseun (14); Ogundare Moyinoluwa (18); Toheeb Tijani (19) and Adeleke Sodiq (17) were arrested on Friday morning in Oshodi Oke.

According to one of the suspects, Ganiyu Rahman, “we are over 50 boys. We are always in Oshodi-Oke, from morning till late night.... Some of us genuinely help people to carry their loads while a lot of us are there to snatch handbags, phones and other valuables from people....

“At times, we pretend to be helping them but our focus is their valuables. Most times, we work in groups. While the other is helping out, another person is stealing the victim’s valuables either from bag or pocket.... There are some other guys who forcibly dispossess passers-by of their belongings. These gangs operate early in the morning and late at night when their victims are helpless,” he noted.

Getting personally, Rahman disclosed that he is a product of a broken home which has seen his parents remarrying: “I have been sleeping in Oshodi Under Bridge since 2013.... I work as conductor and whenever am not, I am with my peer to rob and snatch valuables in Oshodi...

“We were three when we stole the Microsoft phone from a lady’s bag. We pretended to be helping the lady to get a bus, meanwhile, our intent was her phones. I have been committed to 13 month rehabilitation by the Lagos State Taskforce but my home is in Oshodi Under Bridge,” he stated.

His victim, Sarah Obende, an undergraduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), disclosed that “I thought I had lost the phone.... I discovered it was missing immediately I boarded a bus in Oshodi. I received a call in the evening that I should come to Alausa to collect my phone.”

Another suspect, Sadiq Adebayo, who was allegedly in company of two other boys while stealing an iPhone and a phantom Techno phone from a car, disclosed, “Osas and Janbele stole the two phones in my presence.... We have sold the two phones along with seven other phones to Tuwo in Idi Oro, Mushin. They gave me N7,000 from the proceeds."

Four of the remaining suspects, namely: Timilehin Oluwaseun, Ogundare Moyinoluwa, Toheeb Tijani and Adeleke Sodiq were all separately apprehended while stealing phones and purse from commuters in similar circumstances.


The onslaught on criminals has been stretched to various black spots in the state. Responding to the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Dolapo Badmos, said Police would leave no stone unturned in getting rid of criminal elements within the State, urging parents to monitor the activities of their wards and children. The suspects have been transferred to Lagos State Taskforce.
