PoliticsNew Jamb’s Admission Policy Meant To Help Candidates — Registrar by metroparrot(op): 10:13pm On Jul 25, 2015
The Registrar/Chief Executive of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, has reacted to the protest at the University of Lagos by parents and candidates who could not access the university’s admission.

Ojerinde noted that the policy introduced by JAMB, for which he has been criticised, “is actually meant to help the candidates not only to get admission but to get it on time”.

Ojerinde explained that the decision to reallocate candidates who cannot be admitted into their choice institutions because of the high cut-off marks set by the institutions for the various courses to other federal, states and private institutions in that order, depending on the availability of spaces, choice of the course of the candidate, geographical zone of the candidates’ first choice and the performance of the candidates, was to help the candidates and reduce the numbers of qualified candidates who miss out on admissions yearly due to limited spaces.

He noted that JAMB had made the situation clear to the institutions during its policy meeting on July 14 after it held discussions with the representatives of the federal, state and private universities where the degree of the problems of candidates were presented and solutions were proffered.

“By this approach, wastage of high scores will be reduced, the fate of the candidates will be determined on time and yet the interest of their areas of study may be satisfied,” Ojerinde stated, noting that the decision became imperative because “the big universities are overloaded” while others have spaces that are not filled.

He explained further: “Can you imagine 8,000 students seeking admission to study law in a university that will take only 250 candidates for law? The remaining 7,750 candidates will wait endlessly and hopelessly till the end of the admission. Or imagine 7,500 candidates seeking admission to study medicine in a university. Of these 7,500 candidates, 2,000 scored above 250 in the UTME. The university has a carrying capacity of only 150 candidates for medicine. The remaining 7,350 who scored above 200 will be wasted. Particularly, 1,750 candidates who scored above 250 will be wasted while other universities either do not have enough candidates or high scoring candidates.”

He added that JAMB had discovered that courses like Biological Sciences, Pharmacy, Agricultural Engineering and related courses are, in most cases, without enough candidates in the universities while everyone scampered to study medicine and only a small percentage eventually get admitted.

He said: “We are saying: let’s give them a feel of chance somewhere else that has not gotten enough candidates for law or medicine by sending the names of these high scorers to ‘needy’ universities. In addition, the concept of selection by merit, catchment area and educationally less developed states will be adequately catered for.

“However, I am not saying that everyone will get admission or even get their original choice of course of study. But it is better than wasting the time, finances and good scores of these candidates. We need to fill the available spaces as given to us by the regulatory bodies such as the National Universities Commission, National Board for Technical Education and the National Commission for Colleges of Education. But if a candidate does not want the given opportunity, he can decline the offer and just refuse to take any step.”

Ojerinde indicted some so-called educational consultants who have hidden agenda, which are being thwarted by JAMB’s proactive steps, as being behind the protests, warning: “This is a period of change. If they do not change, they will be changed.”

PoliticsFlood Kills 4 People And Destroyed Properties Worth Millions In Anambra by metroparrot(op): 7:02pm On Jul 24, 2015
Four persons got drowned and property worth millions of naira destroyed in Obosi community near Onitsha, following a downpour that lasted for about five hours, a correspondent of NAN reports.

The rain which started in the early hours of Friday, collapsed a four-storey uncompleted building in the Owelle Aja area of the community and flooded many houses, with their occupants trapped.

NAN correspondent observed that some of the affected residents were removing their property soaked by the rain while others were laying sandbags and trying to create access for the flood water.

NAN also observed that residents of Oduke Layout were wailing as a family of four were said to have drowned in the flood water.

Speaking to NAN, a landlord in the community, Chief Achebe Ifemaje, urged the government to move fast to re-plan the community and stop land speculators from selling every space of land without regard to the flow of water in the community.

“What has happened is a big lesson to everyone, especially where people refuse to plan but put money first rather than the safety of lives.

“We appeal to Gov. Willie Obiano to come and re-plan the entire Obosi community especially its layouts and Owelle Aja areas,” he said

An indigene of Obosi, Mr Michael Chukwurah, urged government to stop land speculators from indiscriminate division of land into parcels and restore the master-plan of the community by removing structures that blocked water passage.

“It is a lie that Obosi does not have a master-plan. It is the land speculators that are peddling that rumour to get more land to sell.

“We do have a master-plan and prominent people in Obosi should invite government to come and do the needful,” Chukwurah said.

PoliticsBuhari Wants Obama To Come To Nigeria by metroparrot(op): 1:41pm On Jul 23, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari this morning returned home after his three-day visit to the United States of America on the invitation of President Barack Obama.

The Nigerian leader was received on arrival at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Abuja by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and some Service Chiefs.

While President Buhari was leaving Abuja for Washington DC., on Sunday, it was showering, and he had to be aided with an umbrella to avoid being wet. The same scenario was witnessed this morning when he was welcome back home by a drizzle.

The Nigerian leader has promised to send a formal letter to Barack Obama requesting him to visit Nigeria. “Obama’s tour of Africa would be significant with visitation to Nigeria,” Buhari said.

PoliticsCrude Oil Vessel Owners Challenge Buhari Ban by metroparrot(op): 12:52pm On Jul 23, 2015
A ban on 113 oil tankers ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari must be lifted immediately as no grounds have been given for the measure, the global oil tanker industry association said in a letter of protest.

NNPC, acting on Buhari’s order, issued a letter on July 15, which said the vessels, mainly VLCC crude oil tankers, were banned from calling at Nigerian crude oil terminals and also from Nigerian waters with immediate effect.

Industry association INTERTANKO, whose independent members own the majority of the world’s tanker fleet, said in a letter to NNPC, dated July 22, that there were no “evidence or grounds” given for the ban.

“INTERTANKO protests in the strongest possible way that these bans should be lifted with immediate effect until grounds and evidence for the ban have been given to each vessel and vessel owner/operator, and the owner/operator has had an opportunity to respond,” General Counsel Michele White wrote in the letter.

Since taking office in May, Buhari has been working to fulfil a campaign promise to tackle corruption, particularly in the oil industry. He has dissolved the NNPC board and ordered an investigation into a scheme through which the country swaps crude for oil products such as gasoline.

White said separately the list of banned tankers was “not exhaustive and already further tankers are being added”.

“Our current understanding is that these ships may have been targeted due to a failure to provide official outturn figures at their last call and/or commercial differences between load and discharge figures for cargo and free water,” White said in a separate note to members.

“This may also however be part of a general crackdown by President Buhari on corruption in Nigeria’s maritime, oil and gas, financial services and security sectors, including illegal bunkering and fuel sales.”

White said after INTERTANKO had spoken with its members in some cases the ship had not called in Nigeria for several years, or at all.

“In others, the ship has changed ownership since her last call in Nigeria,” White said.

“Members have also advised that some oil majors are attempting to introduce charterparty clauses requiring the owner to warrant that the vessel is not subject to any Nigerian bans or restrictions due to failure to report any outturn figures for prior voyages.”

INTERTANKO said it had advised members to avoid such a provision.

The presidency says President Buhari will only be probing the immediate past administration and will not probe past administrations of Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, Sani Abacha and others. Speaking to newsmen, the special adviser to the president on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina says that President Buhari had stated during his campaign that his probe will only be limited to the immediate past administration

"If you recall, that was already settled before he got inaugurated as president. He has said he will not waste time digging into the far past. The far past will includes Obasanjo and others. But the president has said he will not waste time to go that far.”he said

Former President Jonathan had stated before leaving office that any probe focused on his administration will only amount to witch-hunting.

PoliticsBuhari Set To Attend AU Confab On Ebola by metroparrot(op): 9:51am On Jul 17, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari will be among African leaders and heads of state attending the International Conference on Africa’s Fight Against Ebola, holding in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea from 20 to 21 July, 2015.

The conference themed “Africa Helping Africans in Reconstruction and Recovery from Ebola”, is organised under the auspices of the African Union Commission.

Buhari who is scheduled to address the gathering, will be represented by Mr. Linus Awute, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health.

The conference will bring together heads of government, ministers, experts, captains of industry and stakeholders who will share experiences of their Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) containment and support efforts.

The major objective of the confab is to seek support for post-Ebola recovery and reconstruction in the region, especially for those countries that have been adversely affected by the disease.

On the continent, the strategy to contain and eradicate the Ebola epidemic has been mapped out by each government with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), development partners and the private sector. However, the conference will focus on “Africa helping Africa” in the spirit of African solidarity.

It will be recalled that Nigeria was certified Ebola free on October 20, 2014 by the World Health Organization, it has also been constantly mentioned as a reference point for successful Ebola containment response.

Consequently, the President will share Nigeria’s experience in EVD containment and the Country Response Plan against the unlikely event of another outbreak.

A meeting of African Health Ministers precedes the AU Ebola Conference. Health Ministers will convene for the meeting on “The Establishment of an Africa Centres for Disease Control” (CDC) from 17 to 19 July, also in Malabo. The Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute will head the delegates from Nigeria to the ministerial meeting.
