I remember the incident quite well and then I attributed it to pilot error because he flew with one engine for 'quite a while' before the second engine failed. My question then and I say so now is that:

Yes, a twin engined or even four engined aircraft can fly and land safely with one engine operating but, BUT only if the pilot knows exactly what caused the engine to fail ...or lose thrust. And I wil say to pilots. If you donot know what caused the engine to fail then declare an immediate emergency and put the bird down asap.

He had Akure, Ibadan airports to do that bit for some reason decided to continue on to Lagos which proved a bridge too far. Pilots flying in Nigeria should be conversant with ALL airports and airfield along their corridors/airways be they operational or not. It could jùst be a life saver.

If for instance you have a fuel flow (blockage), fuel contamination (popular in the 90's in Nigeria), fuel pump failure (electrical) and one engine goes out as a result, you have no engies because it is just a matter of time before the other(s) die. It will not matter whether the aircraft can fly with one engine or not. The key is: what caused the engine failure.

If I am a pilot I will not hang around to find out or continue stupidly to my destination, company image or not.

Most plane crashes in Nigeria were a result of pilot and management error. Bellview was very avoidable too.

I knew a little bit about that incident. In fact, the pilot's last communication with the ATC was "I have lost noth engines...I have lost everything".

I know he said simething like "I just want to get home..." when they first noticed an issue about 17 minutes into the journey", but I thought that home was Lagos.

When they lost the first engine, first officer suggested to the captain to get the flight engineer to evaluate the issue. The captain declined that they can resolve it themselves. He asked the first officer to increase the rate of descent which the first officer objected to but still carried out the command. Then they lost the second engine. If they hadn't increased rate of descent, I feel they would still have been able to glide to the airport when the second engine went out

I'm surprised no one is talking about creating more airports or air strips at most 15mins from one another to ease landing incase of emergency.
In more advanced countries like US they have several thousands of airports/ air strip, planes even carry out emergency landings on roads but we don't even have motorable roads.
