Good morning everyone. I am humbled from the mentions I got yesterday from the member who used my doors as a yardstick to everyone who encouraged to keep my leg on the gear. You all made feel encouraged that yes, people are actually seeing my works.

I promise not to relent and to live up to expectations of Gbadexy when he gave me that first job.

Thank y'all again and let's do greater things together.

Good morning

You're right in advising towards investment, it's progressive. But home is home. While investigating we should put our home in order too. I have acquired properties in the cities as you advised but I believe a befitting house in my village is as good as a house in the city. I think that at a certain stage a man should leave his father's house and enter his own. I've lived in my father's house enough.
sure thing. Good luck man but you need to up your budget to about 20ml

Yeah. During my I.T days, my boss usually employ them for plastering and tiling. They are uniquely skilled. Mind you, their charges ain't expensive either.
Our people here too should learn from them if need be. Learnings is everlasting.
they're uniquely skilled and inexpensive but they waste materials like mad. I have been to many site they have worked on and it's not worth it at all.

At a time it was as if they were taking over plastering jobs in this town but not anymore. Not when cement is too expensive. These people will mix two bags of cement around 5:45pm and close work around 6:10pm and they will dump the cement in any available holes they can find. If you ask them, they will tell you if you are not rich, you won't be building a new house.

The economics isn't in their favor at all

Thanks for your advice. But everything shouldn't be about returns. If we keep making this money and keeping them outside, to me, it's not ideal. No matter what we build in the cities, none will leave the earth with us. We should invest and we should also be comfortable in our homes.
bros I never said you won't build oh. I don't know your when you intend to leave the country but you definitely will need something to fall back on. Investment sweet plenty.

I frown at the bolded. Quantity Surveyors do not "help" engineer because they weren't trained for them. Rather, the practice of Quantity Surveying is established by CAP NO 31 in 1986 by the act of the National Assembly.

Quantity Surveying practice is an independent field of practice in any country it's practised.

Quantity Surveyors are on the side of the project. Of course, engineers can patronise the services offered.
that's ok boss. Sorry for the misinformation. I didn't know better but I know now

Wind consideration is very important and structurally, which is important varies from site to site.

where the tank is built in open countryside, wind effect will have to be the priority.

Where the tank is slender due to the height of the tank (as for most cases). Lateral sway will have to be paramount.

The load that the tank is expected to carry during its service life.

In summary, during the structural designs, all these cases will be considered and model accordingly.

Civil/structural engineers will make use of these assumptions, model, analysis and design the most economical and cost-effective tank.
knowledge is priceless and believe me what you guys are teaching me daily is what people spent years to learn in the university and paid top dollar for. I look forward to learning more.

How much is enough for a 2 storey building, six flats? And what is required for the work?
I will suggest you use two 1000 gallons tank on top, then two tanks of 750 gallons separated at each floor. The height should be 32-35 ft depending on the height of the building. The channel to be used should be 6 by 3 for the structure and 4 by 2 for the load beams carrying the tanks. Your budget should be around 800,000 depending on your location.

You can also choose to do four 500 gallons tank on the top and then one 500 gallons at first floor. The last tank should be for the compound sanitation and the occupant cars.

I don't know if you understand me. I'm down with a flu and can't really think clearly

It's good that you're remembering your roots. I don't know ideal your pocket is but I will advise that you invest that money in landed properties in locations like Asaba, Owerri. These places have huge ROI and you don't even need to maintain the investment.

If you spend that money building in your village, you will still need about to be maintaining the house and yet you won't make a single kobo from it.

But it's your money so you decide

You made mention of the foundation,

how do you calculate this load and transfer to the said foundation ?

Wind is a major factor too.

Reason same materials may not work is because of wind I will gve a brief lay example below..

If you build close to sea or open up area or hill where no winding breaking occurs at much such section may likely not work except for proper bracing compared to building such stand at Ikeja where its relatively developed or behind ur building..

The base plate, stiffeners, bolt ,welding even painting are all recommended.

The reinforcements in the foundation how do you go about it? Do u know which is the main direction, do you know where to splice your section or how to connect back such.

From your believe what engineer does is use same section change the wind pressure to see if it works and check the load against the Soil bearing capacity of same area Sir it work's u r good to go if it doesn't adjustment comes in and modification Sir.

I will provide you with your next 3 project on this tank stand drawing free since I notice this is what most people want to contract your service for here..

You will make a good fabricator since you are technological inclined ,

https://www.nairaland.com/3522155/iron-tank-collapses-secondary-school
what happened here is the weight of the tank was too heavy for the channels. If you check well, this stand fell under weight of the tank. If you check well, the foundation is still very solid but the channel fell under weight of the tank.

About the foundation, the soil determines how deep and wide it needs to be. The foundation anywhere is required to be about 2ft wide and 4ft deep at least but nothing is permanent because the height and load of the tank isn't permanent.

And yes tanks are usually positioned in a place where a house helps cushion the force of the wind and not leave it vulnerable.

You need to also realize that my field of work is an area that isn't truly defined with rules as it is occupied currently by illiterates. But through experience,we have come to develop a model that works for each person. You will agree with me that with all the education the engineers have, they still build structures that collapse. Even with their established rules and regulations. You can rarely hear the news about collapsed tanks but you hear about buildings falling everyday.

I'm willing to learn from you if you have any working model which I will have to add to my knowledge and improve on it. It's one of the biggest gains I have made from this thread and not just the jobs. I have been opened to more knowledge than what my colleagues have.

Good morning All,
I need to give some observation, read carefully.
As a silent reader I notice the trend of everyone wanting a steel tank stand, and materials suggestion keeps going on kindly notice the following.

Steel section are choose from expected load (tank size) ..but the bracing are always strategically place to reduce section at times or for stiffness purpose

If a steel section works in Lagos for example doesn't mean same will work in Abuja the wind pressure in each state in Nigeria is significantly different according to the wind isopleth data, so when assume this is always dangerous..

Section like UC, UB Angle iron etc all have minor axis and major axis meaning the direction of face are of important, reason you see people using CHS (recommended sizes) u don't have to worry about any local bending its strong all through .

The base plate need to be check like wise the HDB(hold down bolt)

The foundation this is important and done with three things put into consideration (weight of the steel ,wght of water , wind reactions on the structure ,live load of access also)

Not to bore you much your tank may be over designed (waste of money at least safe sha) or under designed (total waste of money and intending disaster waiting to happen)

A tank stand is a structural elements you should never toy with it because its failure is always a serious issues.
the most important part of tank stand is the foundation. It varies from place to place and that's why it's recommended to do the job on site so you can see the soil you're working with and find out the kind of foundation it requires. What works in Nnewi will NEVER work in Lagos.

The weight of water and load is same everywhere and as such same material that works at point A can work at B provided the weight, height remains the same. It's a hollow structure and so wind can freely pass without compromising the structure.

Another factor is the ability of the welder to weld well. I don't know how to explain this part.

If the three factors are adhered to, you will get a structure that will outlive the building

On Jan 5th the president of the House of legislative vice president Mike Pence will supervise the joint session of the house and will certify Biden as the president elect of the United States of America.

On 20th of January, Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn in as President and vice president respectively.

You can claim whatever you want but your opinion from Nigeria will make no difference. The American democracy and electoral system supercedes everyone and anyone.

These senators are just riding on Trump foolishness to position themselves in the Republican party in future elections. Their hardliners position will help their political careers in the party

it's approximately 25ft and you will be needing 5 by 3 H channel for it. Should cost you #550,000. Thanks

Pls i hv a question. I hv a 3500 liter Geepee tank and i want to know if i can use it alone to service block of 4 flats of 2bedroom each . I will like to build a tank stand . Is it necessary to add another tank say 1000 liter .What is the cost implication as location is lagos ? Can it be built on site as i can see your current location is Onitcha . Kindly advise . Thanks
sure it's ok to add another tank so as to provide adequate water for the needs of the occupants. I suggest you add a 750 gallons of tank to the one you already have. And yes it MUST be constructed on site. I don't know the height of the building to inform you on the possible costs

What strength of material should be used for tank tower for a bungalow that would carry 750 gallons of water at the top and 1250 gallons down?

H channel? What strength?
Galvanised pipe? What strength?

What would they cost?"
two tanks means a storey building or more which should be at least 25ft tall. You should use 5 by 3 channel. You should budget #550,000 depending on your location. I'm so sorry for the error in communication.

I was the one who made a mistake. Enjoy your weekend

Okay. Thanks for the advice.

So 4 by 3 throughout would be okay including the base of tank?

3000 litres up and 5000 litres down.
if you go back to my post, you will see I clearly stated it's for a single tank. What you plan to do here is bigger so you will have to up your materials to 5 by 3.

Next time, kindly state everything you plan on doing

2.5mm plain pan

1.2mm for the frame

Those are the main materials to be used

Thanks a lot for the response.

Is it an overkill to use H channel 6 by 3 for the frame work (4 vertical legs), 4 by 2 for the horizontal frame work and 3 inches for the tank base?
it's a single tank and a bungalow. That's a heavy overkill but then it's your money to spend

4 by 2 channel will be good for the job. Run away from galvanized pipes right now cause the quality has dropped heavily from what it was before. Depending on your location, budget like #180-250k

I initially thought the diagonal design of the inner portion are hollow rectangular pipes lined side by side and joined together.
sure it could also work but that's not what they did. Reason is that if you line up pipes that way, you will have to weld and when you weld, you will have to file and when you file, you will apply body filler which will cover the lines.

The most glaring indication is the beginning of the beginning of the designs. There's no way the pipe can be cut especially 3 by 1½ which is the pipe used

Modified

There are new designs of pan coming into the market which can be what they used. Although I haven't seen this particular design but there are lots of things I haven't seen
