A British mother and her son who are in a sexual relationship have gone into hiding as police have warned they could face 15 years in jail.
Kim West, 51, and her son Ben Ford, 32, who live in Michigan, US, told yesterday that they plan to marry and have a baby together.
But the pair are now in hiding after the US authorities became aware of their relationship, reported The Mirror.
The pair have been in a relationship since they met in 2014 and says they have 'incredible and mind-blowing' sex.

Under Michigan state law, the couple could face up to 15 years in prison, and forced to sign the Sex Register for life.
Miss West and Mr Ford came back into contact two years ago after Mr Ford wanted to find out more about his birth parents and got in touch with Miss West.
They found themselves sexually attracted to each other and shared their first kiss over a bottle of champagne in a hotel before having sex.
And just three days after they had sex for the first time, Mr Ford told his wife Victoria, he no longer loved her and would be leaving.
He told New Day that he told his wife: 'Everytime I have had sex with you since I met her, I imagine its her I am kissing, otherwise I can't perform.'
West, who grew up in Islington, London, became pregnant while studying in California and after giving birth to her son aged 19, gave him up for adoption.


After Ford was adopted a week after he was born, she came back to the UK but was unable to make a relationship work.
But in December 2013, she received a letter from her son, who was looking to track down his biological parents.
And ever since the pair were reunited in January 2014, they realised they were attracted to each other.
Now two years on, he is in a relationship with his mother with the pair living in Michigan in what they describe as 'Genetic Sexual Attraction'.
And now they plan to marry and are even trying to have a baby together.
West, who works as an interior designer, told Alley Einstein of New Day: 'This is not incest, it is GSA. We are like peas in a pod and are meant to be together.
'I know people will say we're disgusting, that we should be able to control our feelings, but when you're hit by a love so consuming you are willing to give up everything for it, you have to fight for it.'
Incest is illegal in the couple's home state of Michigan and judges in the state are able to give out life sentences to those found guilty of the offence.
However, it is unclear if a case against them would be pursued and the couple say they would move if that were the case.
Ford first got in touch with his biological mother in December 2013, while living with his wife in Colorado, as he wanted to know more about his birth parents.
They arranged to meet up and the couple grew close, and eventually shared their first kiss.
Soon after, Ford, a freelance computer coder, left his wife after realising he had fallen for his mother and moved to Michigan, where they met with another GSA couple.
Now the couple are planning a special wedding and hope to have a baby together. They also say they will consider surrogacy, if they are unable to have a biological child.
Genetic sexual attraction is a seldom-talked about phenomenon that occurs between adoptees and their long-lost parents.
It describes feelings of intense intimacy between two relatives who have been separated during the critical years of development and bonding, and then meet for the first time as adults.
When an adult-child and their biological parent finally meet, the brain struggles to associate each other as family.
Instead, they become captivated with one another, sharing similar physical features, likes and dislikes, which is coupled with complex feelings of intimacy. This can lead both parties to express their emotions sexually.
The phenomenon was first identified by Barbara Gonyo in the Eighties, after she a wrote book called I'm His Mother, But He's Not My Son, which recounted her personal story of reuniting with the son she placed for adoption at 16.

Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA) is a term that describes the phenomenon of sexual attraction between close relatives, such as siblings, first and second cousins or a parent and offspring who first meet as adults.
The term GSA was coined 30 years ago by American Barbara Gonyo.
She wrote a book about the lust she felt for the adult son she had given up for adoption 26 years earlier. She never acted on her feelings.
One couple who have spoke out about their GSA relationship is Australian father and daughter John and Jenny Deaves.
It is understood that the pair were estranged prior to reuniting back in 2000, only seeing each other three times.
But once reunited their relationship quickly became intimate ending Mr Deaves marriage to then wife Dorothy.
However, GSA is rare between people raised together in early childhood due to a reverse sexual imprinting known as the Westermarck effect, which desensitizes them sexual attraction.
Experts believe that this effect evolved to prevent inbreeding.

A two-year-old Nigerian boy who was found emaciated and riddled with worms after his family left him for dead has made an incredible recovery.
A picture of the starving toddler being given a sip of water by an aid worker broke hearts around the world when it was published in January.
The boy, now called Hope, was abandoned by his family because they thought he was a witch and was found in the streets by Anja Ringgren Loven, a Danish woman living in Africa, on January 31.
And now Ms Loven has shared a series of photographs showing Hope's miraculous recovery in just eight short weeks, and says he 'is really enjoying life now'.

Back in January, Ms Loven found the boy after he spent eight months fending for himself and living off scraps.
She bent down and gently began feeding him and giving him water from a bottle. She then wrapped up the disorientated toddler in a blanket and took him to the nearest hospital for treatment.
When Hope reached the hospital, he was given medication to remove the worms from his stomach and daily blood transfusions to incorporate more red blood cells into his body, Ms Loven said.
And two days after the aid worker asked for the community's help with Hope's costly medical bills, she received $1million in donations from around the world.
Just eight weeks later, Hope is unrecognisable. He has gained weight and has been pictured smiling and playing with other children.

Ms Loven uploaded new photos of Hope on Saturday, and wrote: 'As you can see on the pictures, Hope is really enjoying his life now having 35 new brothers and sisters who ALL take such good care of him, play with him, study with him, and make sure he is safe and is getting a lot of love.'
But she explained Hope has hypospadias, a genital birth defect meaning the urethra emerges somewhere on the shaft or even the base of the penis, instead of at the tip.
She added: 'The doctors found this inborn condition on Hope, so next week Hope will have surgery.
'This is an operation the doctors have performed many times, so Hope will be very fine.'
Ms Loven is the founder of African Children's Aid Education and Development Foundation, which she created three years ago to help children who have been labelled witches and therefore neglected or even killed by the members of their community.

'Thousands of children are being accused of being witches and we've both seen torture of children, dead children and frightened children,' she wrote on Facebook, accompanying images of her feeding the young boy and appealing for donations to help pay for his medical bills in January.
'With all the money, we can, besides giving Hope the very best treatment, now also build a doctor clinic on the new land and save many more children out of torture!' she said.
Ms Loven runs a children's centre where the youngsters she saves live and receives medical care, food and schooling.

Whether your particular phobia is shark bites, jellyfish or being kidnapped, don’t worry – we can find a beach that’s just wrong for you. Grab an atlas, and a big red pen to mark these Top 10 Most Dangerous Beaches off your list of holiday destinations!

10. Hanakapiai Beach, Hawaii

One criticism you can’t throw at this beach is that it covers up how dangerous it is. A sign leading to the beach shows a tally of how many visitors have died there, with space for more. The problem is the currents – with no reef separating the beach from the open ocean, riptides can drag even good swimmers out to sea with no option of returning. The beach is also a hike away from any help, so don’t expect a fully-trained lifeguard on hand if you do get into trouble. A guide to Kaua’i island says that most deaths are out-of-state visitors who don’t understand the tides. The sign seems pretty straightforward, I think.

On the upside, it’s meant to be beautiful. Just don’t go into the water.


9. Gansbaai, South Africa

Another beautiful spot, with miles of white sand and dramatic cliffs. So beautiful in fact, that you’d think working for the Gansbaai Tourist Office would be a breeze. It has all these features, and it’s also the Great White Shark capital of the world. Who wouldn’t want to visit?

Well, people who are afraid of sharks for one. Maybe it’s just me, but selling a beach as being the Shark Capital of the World is a bit like selling a restaurant as being Cockroach HQ. Just look at this terrifying photo of a shark stalking a kayak, taken at Gansbaai – doesn’t it make your blood run a little bit cold? It’s been said that the photo has been faked, but the photographer denies this and also says that sharks don’t attack kayaks. So that’s a bit reassuring, but I’m still not rushing to visit.


8. Southern Mindanao Islands, Philippines

What happens when you venture “off the grid”? Well, book a trip to some of the more remote islands of the Philippines and you might find out. Away from the tourist destinations like Siargao, you might think there are exciting new places to discover and you’d be right, but not exciting in a good way. The southern end of the Mindanao Islands are frequented by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, who have been in a state of “All Out War” with President Estrada since 2000. In that time in one province, 45% of residents have reported their homes being destroyed, while 16% have known of witnesses to crimes being killed. So, your survival chances as a Western tourist? Depends whether the MILF are in need of a hostage that week or not…

Oh, and there are pirates about as well. Again, in a tourist-kidnapping sense. Still, lovely beaches…


7. Darwin, Australia

Not one beach in specific, but dipping your toes in the waters anywhere near this Northern Australian city would require a nerve of steel. Delights in and around Darwin Harbor include box jellyfish, crocodiles and …more sharks! The jellyfish tend to only be a problem between October and May, but the salt-water crocodiles are visitors to Darwin all year round. One source reports that 4 crocodiles a week are caught in the harbor.

In case this is all sounding too enticing, bear in mind that a 2011 report into the state of Darwin’s beaches found higher-than-average levels of bacteria in the water. Australia has many beautiful and clean beaches to visit, with less chance of being eaten or stung…visit those instead!

6. Kilauea, Hawaii

One of the chief things you need in a beach vacation is heat. Lying on the beach when it’s chilly is just disappointing, really. So in some ways, visiting a beach on top of an active volcano is perfect. But there’s an obvious downside, in the form of the risk of death. But if you don’t much care about such things, Kilauea beach in Hawaii is worth a visit. The volcano has been constantly erupting since January 3rd 1983, so there’s little chance of catching it on an “off” day and it’s a beautiful natural phenomenon…from a distance.

5. Chowpatty Beach, Mumbai

Like Gansbaai, there is someone working hard in the tourist office to promote this beach. But even the official spiel doesn’t make it sound overly appealing: “During the day, it is the hangout of the happily unemployed who snooze under the shade of its stunted trees”. Wow, I would love to hang out with the “happily unemployed” – or hobos, as some other people call them. And I’d love to see those stunted trees too.

But there’s more action to be had in the evening….”kids screaming on Ferris wheels…..wayside astrologers making a quick buck”. Screaming children and astrologers looking to fleece tourists out of their money? Maybe not so attractive. And then, of course there’s its reputation as one of the world’s most polluted beaches, with water so full of faecal matter that one site says “Spending time in this water may therefore result in bacterial and swimming-associated gastrointestinal illnesses”. Matters were worsened when the MV Rak sank nearby in 2011, spilling oil over the water. Avoid it – this is one beach that won’t look good in the holiday photos.


4. Schitovaya Bukhta (Shield Bay), Russia

According to Surf Atlas, this is one great spot to go surfing, although you may need to chat to the local authorities about getting a surf permit, due to the number of restricted military facilities in the area. But the excitement doesn’t stop there! On the other side of the peninsula is Vladivostock, home to the Russian navy…and their disused nuclear submarines. Radiation from these submarines has already caused some incidents, although the secretive nature of the Russian media means it’s difficult to get details on exactly what has happened.

But there are also reports of cracked, underground radioactive storage units in Zvezda naval yard in Bolshoi Kamen, almost directly opposite Shield Bay, across Ussuri Bay (pictured). So, with radioactive waste spills on either side, these waters may be thrilling surfing but chances are they’re a little too thrilling…


3. Heard Island, Antarctica

Another recommendation from Surf Atlas, this would be an extreme surfing experience, if you survive the cold. Heard Island is made up of a giant volcano known as Big Ben and is owned by Australia, but is a world away from an Aussie surf paradise, as it’s permanently covered by ice and the sea is dangerously cold. It’s also a long way away from any kind of help, being 4,100 km south west of Perth and closer to Antarctica than anywhere else. It’s another natural beauty spot, but carries a very real risk of hypothermia.


2. New Smyrna Beach, Florida

Gansbaai may be the world’s Great White Shark capital of the world, but aren’t you wondering where the Shark Bite capital of the world might be? Well, that honor goes to New Smyrna Beach in Florida. Out of 112 worldwide shark attacks in 2007, 17 happened at Smyrna. The next year, there were 24. It’s basically a party town for sharks. Its tourist board describes is as “no stranger to attention”, which is true but getting attention because people keep getting attacked by sharks is nothing to boast about.

Despite that, it still made it onto a list of Top 10 Florida beach towns, compiled by Dr Stephen P. Leatherman of the Florida International University. One of its selling points on the list was that you can still drive on the beach – so if the sharks don’t get you, maybe the cars will…

1. North Sentinel Island, Andaman Islands

This island technically falls under the jurisdiction of India, but effectively it is independent, as the natives there have never submitted to any other authority. In fact, they verge on unwelcoming, which might pose a problem if you were hoping to check out the reef formations that lie nearby. At one point, the Indian government did try and form relations with the Sentinelese, by landing peacefully and leaving gifts for them. However, they were greeted with angry arrow-fire, as can be seen on video, and eventually gave up on any hope of contacting them.

The Sentinelese are almost entirely unknown – clearly, they have a different name for themselves than “Sentinelese” but no-one in the world has any idea what that might be. There’s somewhere between 25 and 500 of them, although these figures could be wildly inaccurate. They appear primitive, although with the paucity of knowledge we have, it’s possible that they have their own version of the internet run on super-computers in those trees. One thing is certain – they don’t like outsiders and they are dangerous. In 2006, two fishermen ran aground on their island by mistake and were killed by the natives. A helicopter attempt to pick up the corpses failed, although the bodies were spotted from the air. However lovely the beach may look, forget it. It is definitely not worth the risk.

It is common knowledge that despite this age’s sophisticated technology, we are still far from uncovering even a dot of the underwater world. You might even be surprised to know that there are still more than a dozen sea creatures that are beyond one’s imagination. Here are some of the unknown creatures that were washed up on the beach showing signs of the mysteries yet to be unraveled.

1. Giant Creature with Bird-Like Beak

In the Russian Far East, the carcass of a very strange creature drew attention to many people living nearby. As far as scientists call it, the creature is like a “strange prehistoric-like mutant” that looks similar to dolphins but is relatively larger.

2. The Dinosaur-Like Turtle

No, it’s definitely not a made-up creature from a film. In fact, when this photo surfaced in the social media, a lot of people said that the animal was a fake. Apparently, this dinosaur-like turtle is a real one and was found in the shore of Russia. After several studies, this odd creature was then identified as an “alligator snapping turtle”, considered as the heaviest freshwater turtle in the planet.

3. Giant Eyeball

What appears to be an eyeball of a giant sea creature was found in the sand of Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2012. Most people who saw the giant eyeball first-hand initially thought that a colossal sea monster is living in the area! As it turns out, the rumor isn’t anywhere near reality. The giant eyeball was found to belong to a large swordfish about fourteen hundred pounds.

4. Montauk Monster

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the one that baffled scientists and caused huge media uproar, the Montauk Monster. Authorities and zoologists first thought that the bizarre creature is just a bloating and decomposing raccoon. However, such theory was debunked knowing that raccoons are distinctively leggy. Since the monster’s debut in 2008 in the beach of New York, it remained a favourite subject of controversy and speculation. Even today, there isn’t any definite explanation how the creature got into the shore of New York and exactly what type of animal it is.

5. Unknown Sea Monster with Sharp Teeth

Way back 2012, a creature resembling that of the dog-like monster was found on a beach in San Diego. The photo was allegedly taken by a 19-year old Josh Menard. According to Menard, the creature is about 2ft long with a fat stomach and resembles the body shape of a pig. The mysterious creature also has sharp claws and teeth, and similar to the dog-like monster, no one has ever figured out what animal it was.

The town of Temuka, located on the eastern coast of New Zealand’s SouthIsland is a relatively quiet and peaceful town. But on October 28, 2009, the small town was shook by the carcass of a sea monster. Everyone who came across the said creature figured out that it was an alien. Some people thought that the white thing coming out of its dead body are tentacles while some thought that they were the ribs of the “mysterious blob”.

The said monster is about five-foot long and has a mouth full of sharp teeth! After this photo went online, people began wondering what lurks beneath the British lake.

On January 28, 2015, a very rare megamouth shark was found washed ashore on a beach in between the provinces of Albay and Masbate inPhilippines. The lifeless body of the gigantic male shark was found by fishermen who first thought that the sea creature was just an ordinary whale. To their surprise, it turned out to be some strange creature which they have never seen in their entire life. The megamouth shark was about 15ft long with gigantic jaws making up 50 rows of teeth.

In 1896, locals in St. Augustine, Florida were stunned to find the body of a mysterious sea creature. According to reports, what was then called as “St. Augustine monster” was about 18 feet long and weighed nearly five tons! It was indeed a massive animal! There were dozens of theories about the origin and what type of species it was. Some scientists believe that it was a giant squid, while others thought it to be a strange octopus. After several tests, it was revealed that most results identify the animal as a sperm whale.

1924 reports have shown a gigantic and horrifying white blob found on the shore of Margate, South Africa. Local papers were then released with “Fish Like a Polar Bear” as its headline. It was indeed very controversial especially considering the time it was discovered. According to several accounts, what was then called as “Trunko” remained ashore for 10 days but was never examined by scientists. It was only in 2010 that several pieces of photographic evidence were found.

The Hebrides blob found on the shore of Benbecula Beach in Scotland was discovered by LouiseWhitts in 1990. The blob has unique fin-like shapes lined along its back. Although the image is quite vague, the fact remains that such creature is foreign to our knowledge of common sea creatures.

This particular unknown creature found ashore at the beach of Los Muermos, Chile weighed approximately 14 tons and extends up to 39 feet across. Initially, experts were baffled as regards its identity and it was theorized to be remains of some unknown octopus. Nevertheless, in 2004, following research and tests for the identification of said creature, the DNA test suggested that the creature’s DNA matched that of a sperm whale.

Another blob was found on North Island, New Zealand in 1968. According to J.E. Morton, the chairman of the Zoology Department at the University of Auckland, he cannot think of any living sea creature that resembles the massive blob. The strange creature remained unidentified until today.

A brothel madam who used voodoo curses to force young girls to become sex slaves and made them eat live snakes has been ordered to pay back more than £20,000 out of her profits.
Lizzy Idahosa, 24, made more than £186,000 out of the Nigerian women, who were terrified with black magic and made to see a witch doctor for a sinister 'juju' ceremony, a court heard.
The two victims, aged 23 and 29, had their pubic hair shaved and were forced to eat live snakes and snails as part of the ritual before being flown to Britain where they slept with men across the country.
Idahosa was found guilty of trafficking the women at Cardiff Crown Court and was jailed for eight years in November 2014 - while her husband Jackson Omoruyi, 41, was sentenced to two years.

A Proceeds of Crime hearing revealed that Idahosa had profited by £186,400 from her sex ring.
But prosecutor Eugene Egan told Cardiff Crown Court that investigators could find only £21,900 in Idahosa’s bank accounts.
Judge Tom Crowther ordered Idahosa to pay the cash traced to her accounts - or face a further nine months in prison.
During their trial the court heard that the two women were terrified into doing what they were told because they believed the juju powers would work.

They were told they had to give all the money they earned to Idahosa, and believed the black magic curses would make them go insane or die if they refused.
'The couple were involved in the exploitation of two women brought into the UK from Nigeria to work as prostitutes,' said Caroline Rees, prosecuting, during the trial.
'They were bound to this by something called a juju ritual. It was a ceremonial ritual used to full effect to terrify both women into doing what was demanded of them.
'It was used to ensure compliance, secrecy, and they believed if they broke the bond dire consequences would follow: illness, madness, infertility or death.
'They genuinely believed the powers would work.'
The offences came to light after police arrested a 23-year-old Nigerian woman at the Ambassador Suite brothel in Cardiff, in June 2013.

She told officers she had been living rough in Nigeria after her mother died and had wanted to travel to the UK to find her father.
She had then met a woman, claiming to be Idahosa's sister, who promised to make arrangements for her to travel to London, and as part of the agreement had to take part in the ceremony.
'She did not know what was expected of her,' said Ms Rees, who said the woman had been able to pass through immigration at Heathrow.
'She was taken to a premises full of women dressed in their underwear. There was no explanation as to what was going on but it soon became clear.'
The woman started to work as a prostitute and was forced to have sexual intercourse with seven or eight men every day, working in brothels across the UK, including in Cardiff and Swansea.
When interviewed, she claimed she had given Idahosa £45,000.
The second victim told the court she had paid the defendants £31,400 over two years after working in brothels in Cardiff, Swansea, Barking and East Croydon, and said she had worked in South Wales for a year and eight months.
The woman, who like her fellow victim cannot be named for legal reasons, said she had stopped working and changed her sim card so Idahosa could not contact her.
However, within a month she received a phone call from her mother in Nigeria.
'I had a call from my mum who told me Lizzy's people had been to her house and threatened her,' the victim told the jury.
'Lizzy said if I did not pay her she would kill my mum and make me go mad.'
Idahosa and Omoruyi, who were arrested at their home in London, denied any wrong doing.
But police checked their bank accounts and found a series of transfers with Omoruyi acting as a 'financial middle man'.
Idahosa had denied forcing the women to take part in a black magic ceremony, but claimed that she herself had been trafficked into the UK and forced to work as a prostitute.
She told the jury she did not know the two women had been trafficked.
'It was only when I told them I was trafficked into the country that I found out they were trafficked,' she said.
Idahosa, who is heavily pregnant, said she made an oath with her trafficker before leaving Nigeria and was forced to eat the roast heart of a cockerel.


She said: 'I wouldn't do the things they say I did because I've been through it.'
The jury was told that cash payments of several hundred pounds a time had been deposited into Omoruyi's account from locations all over the country, including Glasgow, Sheffield and Southampton.
He had claimed that money came from his friend.
'I am the kind of person who likes clothes and shoes and I'm known for that - I like to find bargains,' he said.
'It is not that it is any fraud money or anything. My account has not been used for anything like that.'
During an interview with police, he said: 'I am here to say I do not even know the people you are talking about - I have never seen them.
'I have never involved myself in that kind of activity in this country, even before this country. I have not and I would not,' he had claimed.
Christopher Drew, representing Omoruyi, of London, said: 'Since coming to this country, he has demonstrated a willingness to work honestly.'
But Judge Crowther said he was 'certain' that Omoruyi knew the money was illegal and where it was coming from.
Idahosa was convicted of a total of eight counts including trafficking two women into and around the UK, inciting them to become prostitutes and transferring criminal property.
Omoruyi was convicted of two offences of money laundering.
A jury at Cardiff Crown Court took just five hours to find them guilty. Both were remanded in custody today to be sentenced next month, but judge Tom Crowther QC warned them they will face lengthy custodial sentences.
Speaking after the verdicts had been given, Ms Rees said: 'This was a despicable and callous crime.

This is the heartbreaking moment a starving two-year-old Nigerian boy is given water by a charity worker after being left for dead by his family because they thought he was a witch.
The boy, now named Hope, was found emaciated and riddled with worms after being forced to live off scraps thrown to him by passersby for eight months.
He was finally rescued after being discovered naked and wandering the streets on January 31 by Anja Ringgren Loven, a Danish woman living in Africa.

Horrified by Hope's condition, Ms Loven bent down and began feeding him and giving him water from her bottle.
She then wrapped the disorientated and sick toddler up in a blanket, holding him in her arms, before taking him to the nearest hospital for treatment.
Ms Loven is the founder of African Children's Aid Education and Development Foundation, which she created three years ago to help children that have been labelled as a witch and therefore neglected and even killed by the members of their community.
'Thousands of children are being accused of being witches and we've both seen torture of children, dead children and frightened children,' she wrote on Facebook, accompanying images of her feeding the young boy and appealing for donations to help pay for his medical bills.

When Hope reached the hospital he was given medication to remove the worms from his belly and daily blood transfusions to incorporate more red blood cells into his body, Ms Loven said.
'Hope's condition is stable now. He's taking food for himself and he responds to the medicine he gets.
'Today, he has had powers to sit up and smiling at us. He's a strong little boy.'
Ms Loven said Hope even plays with her own son.
'I just don't know how to describe it in words. This is what makes life so beautiful and valuable and therefore I will let the pictures speak for themselves,' she said.

Two days after Ms Loven asked for the community's help with Hope's costly medical bills, she received $1million in donations from around the world.
'With all the money, we can, besides giving Hope the very best treatment, now also build a doctor clinic on the new land and save many more children out of torture!' she said.
Ms Loven runs an children's center where the children she saves live and received medical care, food and schooling.
She and her husband, David Emmanuel Umem, began building their own orphanage in late January.

Corruption lingers at the core of many of the world's underdeveloped nations.

Nigeria, the most populated country in Africa, is perceived to be the most corrupt among 60 countries evaluated, according to data from the 2016 Best Countries rankings. The rankings are a characterization of 60 countries based on a survey of more than 16,000 people from four regions.

In the survey, respondents answered how closely they related each of the 60 countries to the term "corrupt." Respondents were given no further specifications of the term, so interpretation of the word "corrupt" was left to survey respondents.

Elections in Nigeria face scrutiny, even though government accountability is seen as having improved. In 2015, President Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari became the first opposition party candidate to win an election. As part of his presidential campaign, Buhari promised to crack down on corruption.

"When you fight corruption, it fights back," Nuhu Ribadu, the former chairman of Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said in a TedX talk in Berlin.

Nigeria's former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki, is scheduled to face trial on charges of fraud and money laundering, according to Bloomberg. It is the country's first high-profile corruption trial since Buhari took office.

In November, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari attributed this incident – and other alleged abuses of power – to the country's inability to defend itself from other threats, including Boko Haram, an extremist group that began its conquest in 2009 to create an Islamic state.

Russia, seen as the second-most powerful country in the world, is also seen as the sixth most corrupt.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Colombia – a country synonymous with illegal drug kingpins like Pablo Escobar – gives Nigeria a run for its money as the second most corrupt country, based on perception.

Libya currently has two competing governments, two parliaments, two sets of rivaling claims to control over the central bank and the national oil company, no functioning national police or army, and the United States now believes that ISIS is running training camps across large swathes of the country.

On one side, in the West of the nation, Islamist-allied militias took over control of the capital Tripoli and other key cities and set up their own government, chasing away a parliament that was previously elected.

On the other side, in the East of the nation, the “legitimate” government dominated by anti-Islamist politicians, exiled 1,200 kilometers away in Tobruk, no longer governs anything.

The democracy which Libyans were promised by Western governments after the fall of Colonel Gaddafi has all but vanished.

Contrary to popular belief, Libya, which western media routinely described as “Gaddafi’s military dictatorship” was in actual fact one of the world’s most democratic States.

Under Gaddafi’s unique system of direct democracy, traditional institutions of government were disbanded and abolished, and power belonged to the people directly through various committees and congresses.

Far from control being in the hands of one man, Libya was highly decentralized and divided into several small communities that were essentially “mini-autonomous States” within a State.

These autonomous States had control over their districts and could make a range of decisions including how to allocate oil revenue and budgetary funds.

Within these mini autonomous States, the three main bodies of Libya’s democracy were Local Committees, Basic People’s Congresses and Executive Revolutionary Councils.

The Basic People’s Congress (BPC), or Mu’tamar shaʿbi asāsi was essentially Libya’s functional equivalent of the House of Commons in the United Kingdom or the House of Representatives in the United States.

However, Libya’s People’s Congress was not comprised merely of elected representatives who discussed and proposed legislation on behalf of the people; rather, the Congress allowed all Libyans to directly participate in this process.

Eight hundred People’s Congresses were set up across the country and all Libyans were free to attend and shape national policy and make decisions over all major issues including budgets, education, industry, and the economy.

In 2009, Gaddafi invited the New York Times to Libya to spend two weeks observing the nation’s direct democracy.

The New York Times, that has traditionally been highly critical of Colonel Gaddafi’s democratic experiment, conceded that in Libya, the intention was that:
The fundamental difference between western democratic systems and the Libyan Jamahiriya’s direct democracy is that in Libya all citizens were allowed to voice their views directly – not in one parliament of only a few hundred wealthy politicians – but in hundreds of committees attended by tens of thousands of ordinary citizens.

Far from being a military dictatorship, Libya under Mr. Gaddafi was Africa’s most prosperous democracy.

On numerous occasions Mr. Gaddafi’s proposals were rejected by popular vote during Congresses and the opposite was approved and enacted as legislation.

For instance, on many occasions Mr. Gaddafi proposed the abolition of capital punishment and he pushed for home schooling over traditional schools. However, the People’s Congresses wanted to maintain the death penalty and classic schools, and the will of the People’s Congresses prevailed.

Similarly, in 2009, Colonel Gaddafi put forward a proposal to essentially abolish the central government altogether and give all the oil proceeds directly to each family. The People’s Congresses rejected this idea too.

For over four decades, Gaddafi promoted economic democracy and used the nationalized oil wealth to sustain progressive social welfare programs for all Libyans. Under Gaddafi’s rule, Libyans enjoyed not only free health-care and free education, but also free electricity and interest-free loans.

Now thanks to NATO’s intervention the health-care sector is on the verge of collapse as thousands of Filipino health workers flee the country, institutions of higher education across the East of the country are shut down, and black outs are a common occurrence in once thriving Tripoli.

Unlike in the West, Libyans did not vote once every four years for a President and an invariably wealthy local parliamentarian who would then make all decisions for them. Ordinary Libyans made decisions regarding foreign, domestic and economic policy themselves.

America’s bombing campaign of 2011 has not only destroyed the infrastructure of Libya’s democracy, America has also actively promoted ISIS terror group leader Abdelhakim Belhadj whose organization is making the establishment of Libyan democracy impossible.

The fact that the United States has a long and torrid history of backing terrorist groups in North Africa and the Middle East will surprise only those who watch the news and ignore history.

The CIA first aligned itself with extremist Islam during the Cold War era. Back then, America saw the world in rather simple terms: on one side the Soviet Union and Third World nationalism, which America regarded as a Soviet tool; on the other side Western nations and extremist political Islam, which America considered an ally in the struggle against the Soviet Union.

Since then America has used the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt against Soviet expansion, the Sarekat Islam against Sukarno in Indonesia and the Jamaat-e-Islami terror group against Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in Pakistan. Last but certainly not least there is Al-Qaeda.

Lest we forget, the CIA gave birth to Osama Bin Laden and breastfed his organization throughout the 1980′s. Former British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook told the House of Commons that Al Qaeda was unquestionably a product of western intelligence agencies.

Robin Cook explained that Al Qaeda, which literally means “the base” in Arabic, was originally the computer database of the thousands of Islamist extremists who were trained by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to defeat the Russians in Afghanistan.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) used to have a different name: Al Qaeda in Iraq.

ISIS is metastasizing at an alarming rate in Libya, under the leadership of one Abdelhakim Belhadj. Fox News recently admitted that Mr. Belhadj:
“Was once courted by the Obama administration and members of Congress” and he was a staunch ally of the United States in the quest to topple Gaddafi. In 2011, the United States and Senator McCain hailed Belhadj as a 'heroic freedom fighter' and Washington gave his organization arms and logistical support. Now Senator McCain has called Belhadj’s organization ISIS, “probably the biggest threat to America and everything we stand for.”
Under Gaddafi, Islamic terrorism was virtually non existent and in 2009 the US State Department called Libya “an important ally in the war on terrorism.”

Today, after US intervention, Libya is home to the world’s largest loose arms cache, and its porous borders are routinely transited by a host of heavily armed non-state actors including Tuareg separatists, jihadists who forced Mali’s national military from Timbuktu and increasingly ISIS militiamen led by former US ally Abdelhakim Belhadj.

Clearly, Gaddafi’s system of economic and direct democracy was one of the 21st century’s most profound democratic experiments and NATO’s bombardment of Libya may indeed go down in history as one of the greatest military failures of the 21st century.
