Career › Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by micxwell(m): 11:43am On Sep 27, 2018 |
ESSOHEngineers: Please permit the long post we will make on this matter. Currently, it is a reoccurring matter in many organizations where Engineers are being ignorantly haughty about being the people destined to be HSE professionals, claiming they know better.
No, you don't necessarily need to be an Engineer. Listen, don't let engineers fool you with all that crap. I am an Engineer at an MSc Level. Please what is the definition of Engineering? It is application of physical and other science principles to manipulate materials and forces of nature to the benefit of man. That a few people decided to call their discipline engineering is just human edification of certain disciplines.
There are other disciplines that in their own right should be called engineering. And as academia develops, new engineering disciplines are borne. Systems Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Waste Water Engineering, Safety/HSE Engineering etc.
What you really need in HSE is a knowledge in physical sciences, mental sciences and social sciences. Yes, the HSE Discipline is that broad. Very broad. And Engineers cannot lay claim to having all this knowledge. Your Mathematics, Physics , Chemistry and Biology and then some knowledge in Physiology and Human Psychology. Based on our experiences, being vast in these areas gives you added advantage in HSE Sciences. It is only added advantage. If you are interested you can also train yourself online to be as good as any engineer. Gone are the days when we learn through the old means.
It is this advantage of being grounded in Physical Sciences especially Physics,Chemistry and Maths/Statistics, that Engineers have, which gives them the edge. It is like being tall and being a basketballer. It doesn't mean short people aren't good at basketball. But being tall is an advantage. This advantage means engineers can go very deep into the profession and specialize in very deep areas.
The problem we have found with non physical science background HSE professionals is that they can't go deep into the Profession. The moment it goes beyond slips, trips and falls they get confused with all the calculations and etc. However, It doesn't mean someone who studied management sciences can't be a HSE Professional. The person only needs to be serious and learn the principles again. It will take some hard work. It will might be difficult, but if the person is determined, the person will go far.
So, what we should be interested in is someone with a good Physical Science, Mental Science and Social Science Background and not simply saying "Engineers". In Nigeria, engineering it is one of the few disciplines that still rely on expatriate input to get things done. Accountants, teachers , lawyers, etc are all being run and supervised by Nigerians. Till date Engineers most often than not, have a white man monitoring them.
Remember finally that it is HSE. Health, Safety and Environment. In other areas it is CASHESQ. Community Affairs, Safety, Health, Environment and Quality. No Engineer can lay claim to knowing all these so well because he or she was taught all these in school. None! I challenge any engineer to bring his/her curriculum.
So go ahead and chase your area of interest. Good luck. Good write-up and complete as well. |

einsteino: Detailing suites: Most Engrs hate detailing, it is time demanding and sucks! even worse, an average joe wouldnt appreciate the effort/technicality it takes. You may be saying "but orion automatically generates details, tekla structural designer does too"..the tuth is you wouldnt dare submit their detail drawings without painstaking revising and editing it, except you dont know what you are doing or work in an environment where anything goes. atimes you would find certain details from it are just not usable and doesn't meet the standards of either your employer or client. This is where detailing suites come in, they are bespoke softwares that lets you detail in 2D whatever you wish, however you wish with the aid of intelligent codefied macros. example of these are Allplan, Cads RC, Autocad stŕuctural detailing. Brother, Please I need help with Autocad stŕuctural detailing. Funny how I can't find any good material on it, I'm stuck with only the help menu. Any advice/suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks. |

pocohantas: Your second post nailed it. It depends on the kinda guys she rolls with, or/and the kind of girl she is.
When I was younger, I said things like "all guys want is sex", maybe because the circle of guys around me then were mostly a particular age group (early - mid'twenties) and of some class. Those ones on rampage to test their manhoods. Thinking life is about fine boy, beard gang and big dick. But as I got older, my circle changed. While I know these type of guys still exist... I have no business with them.
It is however advisable to eat modestly on dates. It is a date, not the Last Supper. Lol... Cool |

Their Musical prowess is what we are discussing not popularity. You don't need to compare yourself to others, she's Yemi, Tiwa is Tiwa and we like them both. |
Celebrities › Re: Tiwa Savage & Yemi Alade Unfollow Each Other On Instagram by micxwell(m): 2:45pm On Jul 14, 2018 |
Altern8: Yemi Alade showed her jealousy for Tiwa by acknowledging a compliment delivered in the same breath as an insult to Tiwa. The least expected from a professional singer is to correct such OAPs on the spot.
Even Yemi knows that Tiwa is ahead of her in terms of vocal prowess.
Those in doubt should compare their live performances.
I still cannot forget how embarrassed I was when Yemi featured in that Shell International advert with J.Hud and was singing flat. Just leave that Johnny crooner alone. Let her continue dreaming. Tiwa remains her Big sister in this game. |

coolestchris: how can I learn all this software effectively How I did this. For a young graduate Engineer, get Victor Oyenuga's book "SIMPLIFIED REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN" about 3k. Go through the book and pick one reinforced concrete element at a time i.e. slabs, beams, columns, foundation etc. So you can see what experience the man has gathered over the years. If you don't have a BS CODE (8110), download one though Eurocode is what we should stick to but it's still fine. At the back of the book there are two full building designs. One is framed and the other isn't. Download Reinforced concrete detailing manual to BS-8110 online. Finally look for CSC orion software for a start preferably version 18. There are #3 manuals available in the help menu of CSC Orion which is absent in Prota Structures. First is the QUICK START TUTORIAL pdf, Standard Training Manual and Orion Engineers Handbook. Start with the Quick start tutorial up to the Engineers hand book. I bet you you'll know how Orion works. Later you can upgrade to ETABS, SAP 2000 & SAFE, STAAD PRO for both advanced steel and reinforced concrete design. N.B Knowing AutoCAD is verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry important bro. Its the basics. Youtube and Lynda.com can help too. |
