However if somebody corrects you on it then its disrespectful to continue spelling somebodys name wrongly just because you cant be bothered.

If you cant spell somebodys name the way they like it, then dont bother writing it in the first place!

This isnt really about spelling but about respect. Just like some people can jokingly tell somebody "Ode!" or "you are talking nonsense!" It may sound like a joke to them but others get very upset about it.
