The IDF releases footage showing Israeli Air Force fighter jets downing some of the 170 drones and 30 cruise missiles fired from Iran at Israel overnight. Foreign Affairs / US Intel Shows China's Army Had Missiles Filled With Water Instead Of Fuel by Mikeiron78(m): 1:29pm On Jan 08
US intel shows China's army had missiles filled with water instead of fuel in a corruption scandal that led to Xi's military purge: Bloomberg

mloh@businessinsider.com (Matthew Loh)

Chinese soldiers atop mobile rocket launchers in a parade in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 2019 to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic.

US intelligence said China's military purge stemmed from serious equipment issues, Bloomberg reported.Examples of these included missiles that had been filled with water instead of fuel, the report said. The problems are a blow to Xi Jinping's focus on the Rocket Force, China's main nuclear arm.

China's army fielded missiles filled with water instead of fuel and arrays of silos with improper lids — examples of military corruption that led to a dramatic purge of top officials, Bloomberg reported, citing US intelligence.

Bloomberg, which did not name its sources, reported on Saturday that the intelligence indicated Xi Jinping's recent ousting of more than a dozen senior commanders in the People's Liberation Army stemmed from serious issues of graft such as these.

The purge went so far as to ax even the Chinese defense minister, Li Shangfu, who disappeared for two months before being replaced in October.

US intelligence sources told Bloomberg that corruption was so severe in China's Rocket Force and the wider PLA that it would most likely force Xi to recalibrate whether Beijing can take on any major military action soon.

The Rocket Force is China's main military branch overseeing its nuclear weapons and has been a key focus of Xi's recent push to rapidly modernize Beijing's forces.

It's been especially central to China's posturing on Taiwan, with Beijing rolling out long-range missiles on its coast to threaten the self-governed island.

In 2021, researchers said satellite images showed China was constructing hundreds of nuclear-capable missile silos in the Xinjiang desert, allowing its arsenal to potentially rival those of Russia or the US.

But US intelligence said one example of corruption was that entire fields of silos in Western China were fitted with lids that prevented missiles from launching effectively, a source told Bloomberg.

The outlet did not say what sort of missiles had been filled with water.

The American assessment said these problems had likely undermined Xi's modernization policies and internal confidence in the Rocket Force's capabilities, the outlet reported.

Xi's purge was long speculated to be tied to his long-running anti-corruption campaign. For months, China has dodged questions on why so many high-ranking army officials were fired.

Of the recently sacked Chinese commanders, at least three held top positions in the Rocket Force, and four were responsible for equipment, Reuters reported.

The PLA has since emphasized staying vigilant against graft, citing a "battle against corruption" repeatedly in its New Year's Day statement.

The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Angola Exits OPEC by Mikeiron78(m): 8:47pm On Dec 21, 2023
I understand your reasoning, but most people here will not buy it unless you agree to be working for the current administration, lol

nairalanda1:
Anyone hailing Angola on leaving OPEC...should know it is bad news for Nigeria.

Oil prices fell on the news. Know what that means? It means Angola is free to produce and pump as much oil as it wants without any pesky OPEC quota...which means lower oil prices long term because of the resultant glut.

Angola is also free to sell crude at a lower price than the OPEC benchmark if it wants...especially if it needs the money now. (That's part of how Russia survives US sanctions, sports fans).

This weakens our revenue stream drastically, meaning we have to take more and more loans, or the government would have to raise your taxes well well, in the short term at least.

So, don't rejoice.

Modified

The thing that even scares me is the fact that everyone is discovering oil. Zambia, Uganda and even Benin have all found oil. Yes, it is not as high as Nigeria, but more oil in the market means lower prices for oil...which means lower revenue.

Modified 2

Know who benefits from a glut induced low crude price? Europe and the USA. It enables fuel prices there to fall, and their governments benefit as a result.

Travel / ‘do Not Travel’: Which Countries Are Under Travel Advisories For US Citizens by Mikeiron78(m): 2:35pm On Dec 15, 2023
(WGHP) — Anytime you’re traveling to another country, it’s best to know what to expect.

That’s why the United States Department of State issues travel advisories. These advisories serve as a guide to help travelers understand the level of potential risk they may face as Americans abroad.

The United States Department of State issues travel advisories from level 1, counties where travelers should “exercise normal precautions,” up to level 4, where the State Department warns “Do Not Travel.” In some cases, countries may be marked “Other” with additional information to explain why that particular situation may be more complicated.

All travelers should be aware that, as of Oct. 19, the Department of State has issued a Worldwide Caution. The caution highlights "increased tensions" around the world and the risk of "terrorist attacks, demonstration or violent actions" against Americans.

Here's the full text of the Department of State's Worldwide Caution:

Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution. U.S. citizens should:

Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas.
Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.
This article is meant to be a starting place for travelers researching potential travel risks, but it only scratches the surface. We encourage anyone traveling abroad to check the U.S. Department of State website for the latest travel advisories and specific information.

Level 4: Do Not Trave[/b]l
According to the U.S. Department of State, a Level 4 advisory "is the highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks. Politics / Turkish Lawmaker Who Suffered Heart Attack After Saying Israel Will Suffer Died by Mikeiron78(m): 10:20pm On Dec 14, 2023
ATurkish lawmaker, who suffered a heart attack on the floor of parliament immediately after he gave a speech saying Israel would "not be able to escape the wrath of God" for its war in Gaza, has died.
Hasan Bitmez, 53, a member of parliament from the Islamist Saadet Partisi, or Felicity Party, died Thursday at the Ankara City Hospital, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced. The death came days after Bitmez collapsed at the Turkish Grand National Assembly on Tuesday immediately after criticizing the Turkish government’s policy regarding the Israel-Hamas war.
In a translated version of his speech on Tuesday, Bitmez said, "Even if history remains silent, the truth will not remain silent. They think that if they get rid of us, there will be no problem. However, if you get rid of us, you will not be able to escape the torment of conscience. Even if you escape the torment of history, you will not be able to escape the wrath of God."
He then turned and fainted, hitting his ground on what appeared to be a marble floor, prompting fellow legislators in the hall to assist him. Bitmez was then rushed to the hospital in "extremely serious and critical" condition. He later died.

Foreign Affairs / Biden Admin Under Fire For Burning Taxpayer Funds On UN Climate Summit Trip by Mikeiron78(m): 11:43am On Dec 05, 2023
The Biden administration is facing heavy criticism from a Senate Republican leader for sending dozens of representatives, including Vice President Kamala Harris and multiple Cabinet members, to the United Nations climate summit.
The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee's ranking member, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., sent a flurry of letters to members of President Biden's Cabinet on Monday, demanding they justify trips to the U.N.'s COP28 summit in Dubai, which began last week and is set to conclude on Dec. 12. Barrasso questioned why officials couldn't attend the event via available virtual means.

"A significant number of Biden bureaucrats will be traveling across the globe on the taxpayer's dime, all in an effort to advocate for these anti-fossil fuel initiatives," Barrasso wrote in the letters. "They will, of course, utilize fossil fuels throughout their travels while ballooning their own carbon footprint."

"Even though COP28 has established a dedicated virtual platform to foster online participation, federal climate crusaders will gleefully spend the hard-earned money of the American people on airfare, hotels, and fine dining as they participate in person," he continued.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack were among those whom Barrasso sent letters to Monday.
ing to be a very exciting presentation of a global effort that is taking place, even though it’s not happening fast enough or big enough yet," Kerry told reporters Wednesday.

"What is very clear to us – and we will be pushing this the next two weeks that we are here negotiating – we have to move faster," Kerry added. "We have to be much more seized of this issue all around the planet. There’s too much business as usual still."
Nairaland / General / Hamas Ready To Free 70 Israeli Hostages In Return For A 5-day Cease-fire by Mikeiron78(m): 6:42pm On Nov 14, 2023
Story by jzitser@businessinsider.com (Joshua Zitser)

The armed wing of Hamas said on Monday it was ready to release 70 Israeli hostages, mainly women and children, in exchange for a five-day truce in Gaza.

Abu Ubaida, the spokesperson for al-Qassam Brigades, said in an audio recording posted on Telegram, and reported on by Reuters, that negotiations have taken place with Qatari mediators.

"Last week there was an effort from the Qatari brothers to release the enemy captives from women and children, in return for the release of 200 Palestinian children and 75 women detained by the enemy," Ubaida said, per Reuters.

The proposed truce, according to Ubaida, "should include a complete cease-fire and allow aid and humanitarian relief everywhere in the Gaza Strip," Reuters reported.

Roughly 240 hostages were taken prisoner during Hamas' terrorist attack in Israel on October 7, which killed some 1,400 people.

A representative for the militant group in Qatar did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

While Hamas released four hostages last month through Qatari mediation and the Israel Defense Forces freed another, no additional hostages have been released since Monday's announcement.

The IDF did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

In the audio recording, Ubaida also accused Israel of "procrastinating and evading" a deal, Reuters reported.
Previous reports said that Hamas had proposed exchanging 50 Israeli hostages for a five-day cease-fire in Gaza — an offer rejected by Israel.

The Guardian, which cited three sources familiar with those talks, said the deal involved the freeing of children, women, the elderly, and sick people in exchange for a pause in Israel's bombardment of Gaza, which Hamas said would enable it to gather the hostages.
But Israel demanded a much shorter timeframe for collecting the hostages, a task deemed to be insurmountable by Hamas, per The New York Times.

The latest cease-fire negotiation efforts come amid a rising death toll in Gaza, which the Strip's health ministry says now exceeds more than 11,000 people.

Shenzhen FC forward Frank Acheampong has been fined and slapped with a four-match ban after punching an opponent he accused of aiming racist insults at him during a Chinese Super League match.
Video footage captured during Shenzhen’s 3-1 loss at Henan last Friday showed the Ghana international’s rush of blood, as an incandescent Acheampong dashed towards Henan’s Gu Cao and landed a punch that sent the home player tumbling to the floor.
Acheampong, 29, who has been capped 23 times by his country, had never previously been sent off in a professional career featuring more than 350 matches.

Travel / US Senator Introduced A Bill To Req Immigrants To Deposit About $15K To Prevent by Mikeiron78(m): 5:13pm On Jul 27, 2023
FIRST ON FOX: Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio is introducing legislation Thursday that would require immigrants with temporary visas to pay thousands of dollars before entering the U.S. – as part of the effort to crack down on visa overstays

The Timely Departure Act would require some foreign nationals seeking admission to the U.S. on a temporary visa to pay between $5,000 and $15,000 in a bond or cash payment. That money would then be returned to them when they leave the U.S. in accordance with the terms of the visa, or transfer to a green card.

If they overstayed, however, that money would be retained by the Department of Homeland Security, and it would be diverted into an account – the ‘Immigration Detention and Enforcement Account" – to fund the detention and removal of those in the country illegally.

The bill would also bar visa overstays from making a defensive asylum claim after their visas have expired.

The U.S. has struggled to tackle the issue of visa overstays – in which immigrants arrive legally into the U.S. on a visa limited by time or on condition of employment, but then remain in the U.S. even when the time expires or they are no longer employed.

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

Vance’s office noted data that there are approximately 700,000 visa overstays a year, making it an often-overlooked but significant contribution to the illegal immigration problem the U.S. is tackling. In FY 2020, there were 684,499 overstays – about 1.48% of expected departures.

HOUSE HOMELAND GOP REPORT ACCUSES MAYORKAS OF ‘INTENTIONAL’ DERELICTION OF DUTY OVER BORDER CRISIS

"America is a welcoming nation, but we are also a nation of laws," Vance said in a statement. "There are millions of people in this country who have abused our visa system and circumvented our legal immigration process. It is a slap in the face to the working-class Ohioans whose wages are suffering – I will not stand for it."

"I'm proud to introduce this legislation and bring some sanity to our broken immigration system," he said.

The bond system would not apply to certain temporary visas, including diplomatic visas, visas for human trafficking victims and visas for those transiting through the country. It would apply to tourist and business visas, but not to those nationals who are enrolled in the Visa Waiver Program – which allows nationals of some countries to come to the U.S. for 90 days for pleasure or business.

The legislation highlights how the debate over immigration and tackling illegal immigration can extend beyond security at the southern border.

MIGRANT NUMBERS DROP SHARPLY IN JUNE AS BIDEN ADMIN'S POST-TITLE 42 STRATEGY TAKES SHAPE

While the U.S. has been engaged in a border crisis now into its third year, lawmakers have been debating potential fixes to the immigration system for years, but are often unable to find agreement on broad overhauls. It has led lawmakers to attempt to provide smaller fixes to specific immigration issues.

The Biden administration has called for Congress to pass sweeping legislation that it introduced on day one of the administration, to fix what DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has declared a "broken" immigration system. However, it has been rejected by Republicans due to the inclusion of a mass amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants already in the U.S.

virginprincess:
A man that is stingy is a big No for me and also a man that talks too much is a bigger No for me,how i hate men that talks too much,i actually turn down a guy's proposal because he was a talktative that loves sitting in the mist of women not even his fellow men.

Stingy he is not responsible for your financial needs, that's the responsibilty of your parents. That mentality is why most ladies never succeed in life because they believe the man is responsible for their financial needs.

Treat it with balance active vaginal gl or any other medications that treats vaginal odor in the market.
