Tanzania's President John Magufuli dies after weeks unseen

(CNN) - Tanzania's President John Magufuli has died, his government announced on its official Facebook page Wednesday.
The 61-year-old president, who usually made weekly public appearances at Sunday church services, had not been seen since February 27, fueling speculation that he was ill and was being treated abroad.
A Tanzanian opposition leader called on the government to tell the public about the president's health amid growing speculation, Reuters reported Tuesday.
"It is important for the government to inform the public about the president's health to reduce ongoing fear," Zitto Kabwe, leader of the ACT-Wazalendo party, said in a statement. "The president's health is not supposed to be a secret."
Known as "The Bulldozer" for his tough stance against corruption and for his hardline policies, Magufuli swept to victory in October 2015 as Tanzania's fifth president.
But excitement over Magufuli's intolerance for corruption was shortlived as he began a clampdown on democracy and critical voices.
Magufuli oversaw closures and suspensions of numerous media outlets, while his government undermined judicial and parliamentary independence, implemented a partial ban on public rallies, harassed MPs, closed online political space, and prosecuted critics under defamation and sedition laws.
Early on in the pandemic, Magufuli dismissed the seriousness of coronavirus in Tanzania, urging his citizens to "pray coronavirus away," believing the "satanic virus can't live in the body of Jesus Christ," and blaming the growing number of positive cases on faulty test kits.
In June, he claimed his country had eradicated coronavirus "by the grace of God," questioned the safety of foreign Covid-19 vaccines and made no plan to procure any shots for his country, instead pushing for the use of herbal medicine and steam treatments.
Tanzania hasn't reported Covid-19 figures since April 2020, prompting the World Health Organization to call for Tanzania to publish data on the coronavirus and ramp up public health measures.
Last month, the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam warned that Covid-19 cases had been surging since January.

Jeremiah Johnson, an evangelical Christian who predicted that former President Trump would win reelection in 2020, is ending his ministry.

Johnson said he did not make the decision lightly, writing in a Facebook post that he ended Jeremiah Johnson Ministries “after much prayer and the clear direction of the Lord," according to The Washington Post. The post has since been deleted.

The move comes after Johnson faced backlash from fellow evangelicals after he apologized for prophesying that Trump would win the 2020 election, according to the newspaper.

The move also comes in the middle of a YouTube series titled “I Was Wrong,” during which he stated that the country must come together and not dwell on the 2020 election.

“I believe that it is a tremendous mistake to take the next four years to argue and debate and cause division and grow more prideful talking about how we think the election was taken from Donald Trump. I actually believe we need to take the next four years and humble ourselves,” Johnson said in a video in the series.

“We need to recognize that God is up to something far greater in the prophetic, charismatic movement that I believe is beyond what many even recognize. We need to stop, we need to take a breather and we need to come back to a place where we can begin to dialogue about these issues rather than be so triggered,” he added.

Following the announcement, Johnson has deleted all social media accounts associated with his ministry and has started a new website called The Altar Global.

“Our mission according to Revelation 22:17 is to help prepare the Bride of Christ for the return of our glorious Bridegroom King Jesus. We have been instructed to prepare an Altar for the Wedding day,” the website says.

FDA issues emergency use authorization for Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine

(CNN) - The US Food and Drug Administration has authorized Pfizer and BioNTech's coronavirus vaccine for emergency use in the United States.
The FDA announced on Friday that an EUA had been granted, following the recommendation of its Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee.
On Thursday, 17 committee members voted yes to recommended that the FDA issue an EUA for the vaccine. Four voted no and one abstained from voting.

(CNN) - The General Services Administration has informed President-elect Joe Biden that the Trump administration is ready to begin the formal transition process, according to a letter from Administrator Emily Murphy sent Monday afternoon and obtained by CNN.
The letter is the first step the administration has taken to acknowledge President Donald Trump's defeat, more than two weeks after Biden was declared the winner in the election.
Murphy said she had not been pressured by the White House to delay the formal transition and did not make a decision "out of fear or favoritism."
"Please know that I came to my decision independently, based on the law and available facts," Murphy wrote. "I was never directly or indirectly pressured by any Executive Branch official -- including those who work at the White House or GSA -- with regard to the substance or timing of my decision. To be clear, I did not receive any direction to delay my determination."
The letter signals that Murphy has formally signed off on Biden's victory, a normally perfunctory process known as ascertainment. The move will allow the transition to officially begin, permitting current administration agency officials to coordinate with the incoming Biden team, and providing millions in government funding for the transition.
The move toward ascertainment comes after Michigan formally certified its election results on Monday and Georgia certified its razor-thin presidential results on Friday. Pennsylvania is nearing certification of its election results, too.
It's the latest sign that Trump's conspiracy-laden legal bid, led by Rudy Giuliani, to circumvent the outcome of the election is nearing an end. The Trump campaign's lawsuits to delay certification of the election have been dismissed in multiple states, as his legal team has failed to provide any evidence of widespread voter fraud.
But until now, Murphy had refused to move forward with the ascertainment process, despite Biden's clear victory, locking the President-elect's team out of speaking with federal agencies. Murphy, a Trump political appointee, has faced intense scrutiny and political pressure from Democrats and, in recent days, Republicans calling for the start of a smooth transition. In a statement Monday, Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, said that "there is no evidence as of now of any widespread fraud or irregularities that would change the result in any state" and called on the transition process to begin.
In the letter, Murphy suggested that the ascertainment rules were vague and should be updated.
"GSA does not dictate the outcome of legal disputes and recounts, nor does it determine whether such proceedings are reasonable or justified," she wrote. "These are issues that the Constitution, federal laws, and state laws leave to the election certification process and decisions by courts of competent jurisdiction. I do not think that an agency charged with improving federal procurement and property management should place itself above the constitutionally-based election process. I strongly urge Congress to consider amendments to the Act."

Footballer Anele Ngcongca dies in a car accident aged 33

(CNN) - Former South African football international Anele Ngcongca died in a car accident on Monday, according to the country's IPSS Medical Rescue service.
In a statement on its website, IPSS Medical Rescue said it responded to a single vehicle roll-over on the N2 highway near Mtunzini.
"On arrival of IPSS advanced life support paramedics, they found an adult male lying approximately 30m from the wrecked vehicle. The man showed no signs of life and was declared dead by paramedics," said the statement.
According to the IPSS, a female driver was trapped in the wreckage having sustained "critical injuries" but was freed and is now in hospital.
Ngcongca, 33, had been transferred from Mamelodi Sundowns to AmaZulu on loan, and both Premier Soccer League sides, the top tier of South African football, paid tribute to the defender following the accident.
"AmaZulu FC and Mamelodi Sundowns FC extend their deepest condolences to the Ngcongca family, former clubs, teammates, supporters, and the broader football fraternity as well as everyone who was touched by the life of this exceptional football ambassador," said a joint statement from the two clubs.
Ngcongca, who helped the Sundowns win a domestic treble last season, represented Bafana Bafana, the South African national team, more than 50 times, including at the 2010 World Cup on home soil.
"This 2020 has been a terrible year; economically, socially and we have lost many of our beloved ones," said South African Football Association President Danny Jordaan.
"Anele's death just sums up this dreadful year."

Ngcongca spent much of his playing career with Belgian side KRC Genk, for whom he made 279 appearances.

Nigeria threatens CNN with sanctions but provides no evidence Lekki toll gate investigation is inaccurate

Abuja, Nigeria (CNN) - A senior Nigerian minister lashed out against CNN Thursday, saying the network should be sanctioned over its investigation, which uncovered evidence that the Nigerian army and police opened fire on unarmed protestors on October 20.
CNN's investigation focused on a demonstration against police brutality, led by the largely peaceful "#EndSARS" movement.

Minister for Information and Culture Lai Mohammed Thursday dismissed the CNN investigation as "fake news" and "misinformation," repeatedly denying the military used live rounds against protesters.
"Like everyone else, I watched the CNN report. I must tell you that it reinforces the disinformation that is going around, and it is blatantly irresponsible and a poor piece of journalistic work by a reputable international news organization," he told reporters at a press conference in Abuja, in the most significant federal government response so far to the October 20 violence.
"This is very serious and CNN should be sanctioned for that," he said.
CNN stands by its investigation, a company spokesperson said.
"Our reporting was carefully and meticulously researched, and we stand by it," the spokesperson said via email.
The report was based on testimony from dozens of witnesses, and photos and video obtained and geolocated by CNN. It painted a picture of how members of the Nigerian army and the police shot at the crowd, killing at least one person and wounding dozens more.
CNN verified photos and videos acquired from multiple eyewitnesses and protesters using timestamps and other data from the video files. Video footage shows soldiers who appear to be shooting in the direction of protesters. And accounts from eyewitnesses established that after the army withdrew, a second round of shooting happened later in the evening.
Prior to publishing the report, CNN tried multiple times to elicit comment from the Nigerian army and police. A Lagos State police spokesman declined to comment because of an ongoing investigation. While a statement from the Lagos State government said that there would be no comment while a judicial tribunal was underway.
CNN also included comments from army representative Brigadier Ahmed Taiwo, testifying before the tribunal. He denied that soldiers would shoot at Nigerian citizens.
The investigation was broadcast and published on Wednesday and cast doubt on Nigerian authorities' shifting and changing statements over what happened at the protest at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos.
Addressing reporters, Mohammed insisted that "the military did not shoot at the protesters at the toll gate" but fired blank ammunitions into the air, blaming looters for the violence which broke out on the night of October 20.
"Six soldiers and 37 policemen were killed all over the country during the crisis," Mohammed said.
"CNN relied heavily on unreliable and possibly doctored videos as well as information sources from questionable sources to reach these conclusions," he continued.
He did not provide any evidence the videos were doctored.

The CNN report included evidence that bullet casings from the scene matched those used by the Nigerian army when shooting live rounds, according to current and former Nigerian military officials.
Two ballistics experts also confirmed with CNN that the shape of the bullet casings indicate they used live rounds, which contradicts the army's claim they fired blanks.
While the Minister for Information and Culture asserted that "not a single family" has reported the death of relatives during the protest on October 20, the Chief Coroner of Lagos State has since issued a public call for all those who have "lost loved ones between 19 -- 27 October 2020" to come forward and provide evidence which could assist in the "identification exercise."
During his press briefing on Thursday, the Minister denied reports of fatalities at the protest.
"As I said earlier, what started as a peaceful protest against police brutality quickly degenerated into incredible violence despite an immediate response to the demands by the government," he said.
"While we await the Judicial Panel in Lagos to unravel what transpired at the Lekki toll gate, what we can say, based on testimonies available in the public space, is that the world may have just witnessed, for the very first time ever, a massacre without bodies," he added.
According to Mohammed, the National Economic Council (NEC) directed the "immediate establishment" of a state-based judicial panel of inquiry on October 15 -- before the Lekki toll gate incident, but after protests against violence had begun -- to investigate complaints of police brutality and extrajudicial killings.
Eyewitnesses have since told CNN that the government's comments are "lies," making them feel as though they had "hallucinated the whole event."
"Haven't they hurt us enough? I still close my eyes and see the blood and hear the screams," another eyewitness said.
During the press conference, Mohammed said the federal government continues to be "very satisfied" with the role played by security agencies -- especially the military and police -- through the protests.

(CNN) - Cristiano Ronaldo has tested positive for coronavirus, the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement Tuesday.
According to the statement, Ronaldo is "well, without symptoms, and in isolation."
The 35-year-old Juventus forward played for Portugal against France in the Nations League on Sunday and against Spain in a friendly last week.
