TonyeBarcanista: I am not from Bayelsa state, but as a proud Ijaw son from Rivers state, I find the remarks credited to HE Gov Seriake Dickson where he termed the good people of Bayelsa state, and by extension Ijaw people as lazy. This subject is trending on social media platforms including twitter and palmchat, and I feel slighted.
Is Seriake Dickson aware that he only indicted himself and his unfortunate government by that comment, and not Bayelsa people?
A Brief History Please permit me to take us down history lane for a moment.
The Ijaw people are predominantly fishermen. Our fathers and mothers would go to the rivers to catch fish and trade for a living. In fact, we never depend on any handouts from any group, whether the white British or government. Even when palm oil was one of the main source of revenue, our people never abandoned fishing.
However, when oil was discovered in commercial quantity in Oloibiri, Bayelsa state and upon exploration by Oil Companies, our people started losing their predominant fishing occupation due to land acquisition, pollution and water pollution. It became so bad that our young men started to take to oil bunkering to erk living. All these happened because Government at ALL levels and oil companies abandoned our land and people. This reckless abandon even contributed to the first ever secession group in post independent Nigeria, the Niger Delta Republic led by Major Isaac Adaka Boro in 1966.
I believe we would have stuck to our fishing if our waters weren't polluted or if oil wasn't discovered in our land.
Sadly, the government at all level despite the loss of our natural occupation refused to empower our people and retrain our youths. The FG setup intervention Agency like OMAPADEC/NDDC but the agency have not met expectation despite the huge funds they get.
Oil Companies would rather bribe local chiefs and thugs instead of employing and empowering youths. State government and local politicians like Mr Seriake Dickson would rather arm youths to win election and settle them with appointment/allowing them freehand to perpetrate criminality instead of working to emancipate the youths.
They have instilled a kind of psyche that thuggery pays and for the fact that an hungry man is naturally desperate, he would lazy to expect free meal.
An Indictment On Dickson Pray tell what has Dickson done for Bayelsa state to uplift them intellectually? Does Bayelsa have any functioning state Orientation Agency?
Ex-Gov Alamesiegha not only introduce scholarship to encourage thousands bayelsans to get the best education abroad, he also paid the scholars stipends, and increased the bursary of those in higher institution to the envy of non Bayelsans. This he did in addition to establishing the state university. What can be said of Seriake Dickson?
How do you empower people in absence of education? How do you expect people not to be lazy without proper skill acquisition? Our people are very good swimmers but has the BYSG ever deem it fit to sponsor Ijaws to be professional swimmers like the Australians?
Who gave out guns during the last election in Bayelsa state?
What Does He Expect From Bayelsans? They incapacitated Bayelsans of their God giving fishing occupation, they refused to empower the community and the youths, they refused to train them with skill acquisition, they even refused to provide environment. Instead they empower thugs and even elevate their thugs to government position. In addition, The local politicians, monarchs and Oil Companies together deliberately cheat the people.
What do we expect from such a people?
Dickson and his cohorts should be grateful that Bayelsans have not taken to criminality, armed robbery and ritual killing.
The only crime of the good people of Bayelsa state is that they are not well orientated like their Yoruba and Igbo neighbours. Even at that, it remains the fault of the government at all level.
Bayelsans are not lazy, Ijaws are not lazy. Bayelsans are only victims of maladministration and faulty political system. Dickson should leave Bayelsans off his failed leadership.
Long Live Ijaw Nation!!!!! Long Live Niger Delta!!!! Long Live Bayelsa State!!!

Chuksemi: ASUU and NLC are the most useless bodies I have seen. They have been striking since the time of Adam and Nigeria hasn't changed yet.
ASUU went on strike during Jonathan's regime because tetiary institutions were under funded and they weren't paid good salaries. Today, the universities are still underfunded. Some schools have a serious lecture hall problem. The only thing that came out of that strike is the salary increment. Talk about selfishness.
NLC going on strike each time they hear fuel subsidy removed is ridiculous. Do they expect the federal government to pay subsidy forever, do they want the federal government to keep paying subsidies till our grand chilldren inherit debts that would shock them and put them in a state of shock induced stroke ?? Instead of them to fight for provision of palliatives to soften the initial effects of subsidy removal. They are fighting blindly, ableit selfishly for their own pockets again. And what's worse, some people are applauding them.
I do not understand how a country as big and diverse as Nigeria is faced with too many problems. Too many. Yet the only solution that comes to their limited thinking horizon is Strike.
Strike hasn't helped us, and we keep using it. Common sense evaded those in power truly.
View my signature for more atrocities commited by ASUU and Rochas. i don't have problem with them striking for salary increment.na wetin concine dem be dat.students and parents will have to fight for their own. my problem is how they foollishly strike for 3years after incumbent wins instead of 3 months to election(once one president loses election cos of ASUU strike they will be taken serious) |

They fracture Refined Bleached and Deodorized Palm Oil to get Mamador and Power oil. The best part is due to the fracturisation you get Palm oil as cooking oil with avery low Fatty content(trans fat).
Thats why Power oil sells so well and why naija still calls it vegetable oil. they are all vegetable oil but our ppl never research to find out what "vegetable" they're talking about(gnut, sunflower, corn, palm, coconut all na vegetable,so long as it is not lard or pig fat) |

HurtgenForest: We still remember how General Oladipo Diya prostrated before a much lower officer like a pregnant frog, weeping and pleading for his life, a General for that matter. How could a General be so afraid to die like a baby?
Compare with General Aguiyi Ironsi aka IRONSIDE who was brave in the face of death and did not beg or cry for his life. He died bravely like a true army General. The story is there.
Oladipo Diya takes the award as the most cowardly General of the 21st century and is a big disgrace to the Nigerian army and soldiers all over the world.
Whenever you are asked to define cowardice in any exam just select "Oladipo Diya" as the answer and you get your A1 straight. yet he is alive enjoying his retirement with people prostrating before him while iron side is dead and forgotten |

Abagworo: http://allafrica.com/stories/200812190067.html
GOVERNOR Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State has expressed dismay over the practice of selling employment slots to non-indigenes by youths of the state at give-away prices. At an interactive session with the Bayelsa State Elders Consultative Forum, the governor lamented the development, saying "it is saddening to note that indigenes of the state are selling their employment slots in reputable companies at give-away prices of between N20,000 and N70,000." The governor, who gave a graphic description of the thinking of an average Bayelsan, noted with sadness that they wanted everything free, bearing in mind that the state remains the only state throughout the federation where the electricity is generated free. His words, "An average Bayelsan has also believed erroneously that we have money and that is why they want everything for free. In the education sector we pay nothing. The craze now is that everybody wants their children to be sent abroad by the government for free. In the health sector we pay for nothing, everybody is expected to be treated for free. The electricity we produce is for free. Even nobody wants to work; they prefer handouts. "When I first came as governor, my belief was very different. My belief was that if you create jobs, people benefits from those jobs. And one of the things when I came in was that I paid all contractors that were on site. I paid N900 million and we decided to complete all on-going projects before we plan new ones. "The idea was to stimulate the economy so that our people can do small jobs. And I was happy when I paid the money and there were many people working on the site. I went to those sites personally because there were still a lot of complaints on the streets on Yenagoa. sites personally that more than 500 people working on the sites they were all non-Bayelsans. I asked if there was any Bayelsan, there was none and I was shocked. That was when I know we have a problem. Because no matter how much you tried to stimulate the economy it would fly over the Bayelsan because our youths won't work. "I would give you another example - the community around Saipem protested that they were not being given jobs. We intervened and Saipem decided to give 70 quality jobs to boys from that community. The community nominated people to go and work there and I was happy that through our intervention we were able to create the jobs. Later I saw one of the boys and questioned him why he is not at work. "I later found out upon enquiry that he sold his space to an Igbo man for N40, 000 a month out of the N 70,000 he is being paid and that is what all of them did. They sold all their spaces to Igbo people. You would send Bayelsans for training through oil companies; they sell their spaces to Igbo people and those acquire the necessary skills. They are happier to be on the streets of Yenagoa claiming every day that there is hunger. There is no economy that can grow like this. It is a very sad situation." Earlier, the chairman of the forum, Chief Francis Doukpolagha had called on the government and the elders in the state to map out developmental programmes that would be aimed at improving the lots of the people in the state. if this is true then these ppl are finished |
