PoliticsHow Nigerian Army Attempted To Cover Up Shi’ites Massacre —amnesty International by mile12crises(op): 10:51am On Apr 22, 2016
Officials of the Nigerian Army made concerted efforts to cover up the mass slaughter of over 350 Nigerian citizens, including women and children, between December 12-14, 2015, in Zaria, Amnesty International has said.

In a newly-released report about the killing, which involved members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, Amnesty International said it was able to uncover evidence of a possible mass grave in Zaria neighbourhood of Mando with the aid of satellite imaging.
The report, titled: “Unearthing the truth: Unlawful killings and mass cover-up in Zaria”, is based on interviews with 92 people, including victims, witnesses from the Shi’ite and other communities, relatives of victims, residents of the areas where the incidents took place, lawyers and medical personnel and contains shocking eyewitness testimony of large-scale unlawful killings by the Nigerian military and exposes a crude attempt by the authorities to destroy and conceal evidence.

“The true horror of what happened over those two days in Zaria is only now coming to light. Bodies were left littered in the streets and piled outside the mortuary. Some of the injured were burned alive,” said Netsanet Belay, Amnesty International’s Research and Advocacy Director for Africa.
“Our research, based on witness testimonies and analysis of satellite images, has located one possible mass grave. It is time now for the military to come clean and admit where it secretly buried hundreds of bodies.”
The massacre of Shi’ites and continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, have earned the Nigerian government widespread international condemnation, including a probe by the International Criminal Court.
In February, the Islamic Human Rights Commission, IHRC, a United Kingdom-based Muslim advocacy organisation, has dragged President Muhammadu Buhari, the Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, the chief of army staff, Tukur Buratai, to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the massacre.

The organisation also asked the ICC to investigate the emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and the emir of Zaria, Shehu Idris, for human rights violation and crimes against humanity.
Foramfera
Other army officers and persons the IHRC asked the ICC to probe for their roles in the massacre are: spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Sani Usman, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna, Adeniyi Oyebade, the Commander Nigerian Depot, Chief of Defence Staff, Abayomi Olonisakin, Director Military Intelligence, Chief of Defence intelligence – AVM Riku Morgan, AK Ibrahim – Commander 1 Division Garrison, Nigerian Army, Kaduna and Col. F.M Babayo.
The rest are Capt Ben, Adjutant Depot, Nigerian Army; Adeniyi Oyebade, General Officer Commanding, 1 Division Garrison Kaduna; Umar Labdo; Sambo Rigachukun; Bala Lau; Yahaya Jingir and; Kabir Gombe.

In a detailed report, the IHRC argued that attacks of the army on members of IMN between December 12 and 14 in Zaria qualify as crime against humanity and therefore called on the ICC to initiate an investigation into the incident.
In April, the ICC announced the commencement of detailed investigation into the killings.
According to Amnesty International’s findings, more than 350 people are believed to have been unlawfully killed by the military between 12 and 14 December, following a confrontation between members of IMN and soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna State.
IMN supporters – some armed with batons, knives, and machetes – had refused to clear the road near their headquarters, the Hussainiyya, for a military convoy to pass. The army has claimed that IMN supporters attacked the convoy in an attempt to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff. IMN members deny this.

Some people were killed as a result of the indiscriminate fire while others appeared to have been deliberately targeted, Mr. Belay said.
The report highlighted the agony of relatives of the victims of the massacre, which the federal government has continued to deny.
Zainab, a 16-year-old schoolgirl, was quoted by Amnesty International: “We were in our school uniforms. My friend Nusaiba Abdullahi was shot in her forehead. We took her to a house where they treated the injured but, before reaching the house, she already died.
The cover-up
Amnesty International said after the incident, the military sealed off the areas around El-Zakzaky’s compound, the Hussainiyya and other locations. Bodies were taken away, sites were razed to the ground, the rubble removed, bloodstains washed off, and bullets and spent cartridge removed from the streets.
Witnesses saw piles of bodies outside the morgue of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria. A senior medical source told Amnesty International that the military sealed off the area around the morgue for two days. During that time he saw army vehicles “coming and going”.
A witness described to Amnesty International what he saw outside the hospital mortuary on the evening of 14 December: “It was dark and from far I could only see a big mound but when I got closer I saw it was a huge pile of corpses on top of each other. I have never seen so many dead bodies. I got very scared and run away. It was a terrible sight and I can’t get it out of my mind.”

Another witness told the organisation how he had seen diggers excavating holes at the site of the suspected mass grave: “There were five or six large trucks and several smaller military vehicles and they spent hours digging and unloading the trucks’ cargo into the hole they dug and then covered it again with the earth they had dug out. They were there from about 1 or 2 am until about 5 am. I don’t know what they buried. It looked like bodies, but I could not get near.”

Amnesty International identified and visited the location of a possible mass grave near Mando. Satellite images of the site taken on 2 November and 24 December 2015 show disturbed earth spanning an area of approximately 1000 square metres. Satellite pictures also show the complete destruction of buildings and mosques.
“It is clear that the military not only used unlawful and excessive force against men, women and children, unlawfully killing hundreds, but then made considerable efforts to try to cover-up these crimes,” said Netsanet Belay.
“Four months after the massacre the families of the missing are still awaiting news of their loved ones. A full independent forensic investigation is long overdue. The bodies must be exhumed, the incident must be impartially and independently investigated and those responsible must be held to account.”
On Monday 25 April, the military are expected to give evidence to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry established by the Kaduna State Government in January 2016.
On 11 April, a Kaduna State government official told the Judicial Commission of Inquiry that the bodies of 347 members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) were collected from the hospital mortuary and an army depot in Zaria and buried secretly in a mass grave near Mando (outside the town of Kaduna) on the night of 14-15 December.
The IMN claim a further 350 people who went missing during the incidents in Zaria remain unaccounted for.
IMN leader Al-Zakzaky and his wife Zeinat Al-Zakzaky were arrested and held incommunicado. They were only allowed access to their lawyer for the first time on 1 April 2015, three and a half months after their arrest.

Amnesty International called for those IMN supporters charged in connection with this incident to be tried promptly and fairly and for those still held in detention without charge to be either immediately charged or released.
The group also urged the Nigerian government to thoroughly investigate the killings and punish those responsible without recourse to death the penalty.

PoliticsViolence Have Come To Stay In North-east-naf Chief by mile12crises(op): 1:27pm On Apr 20, 2016
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, has said violence cannot be eradicated totally in the North Eastern region of the country, adding that security agencies are doing their best to tackle insurgency.

Abubakar spoke on Tuesday during his visit to the Logistics Command of the Nigerian Air Force, Sam Ethnan Base, Ikeja, Lagos.
The COAS, who inaugurated several projects at the base, noted that the fight against terrorism had improved under the present administration, saying the era of Boko Haram terrorists moving in convoys and destroying villages had become a rarity.
He said, “In the North Eastern part of Nigeria, we are making progress. We may have challenges of suicide bombings here and there, but that will end soon.

“There cannot be zero violence; violence will still be there. But everything humanly possible will be done to have a peaceful and stable environment in the North-East so that people can go about their business in peace.
“We are doing so much in terms of close air support. We are providing an enabling environment for the surface forces to function. We soften the ground for the surface forces to function. We are providing logistics-in-supply, rotational transportation, and also moving equipment.

While on a visit to the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, the COAS noted that the Logistics Command, Lagos, was strategic to the operation of the air force, especially in supplying equipment to further the war against insurgency and other criminal activities in the country.
In his remarks, Ambode stressed the need for the state government and the NAF to collaborate in mounting air surveillance on the waterways in the state to nip in the bud all criminal activities on waters.

He said, “The state government is sensitive to security issues and in the last 11 months, we have tried as much as possible to put security on the front burner of our tripod in running Lagos State. We believe strongly that security and development are twins. There is no way we can develop if there is no security and that is why we are laying more emphasis on protecting the lives and property in Lagos on the road, waterways and in the air.

“We have contributed some helicopters to the Rapid Response Squad of the Nigeria Police Force. I commend President Muhammadu Buhari for the recent approval given to the Nigerian Air Force to procure more helicopters and going by the fact that Lagos is the logistics base of the Air Force, we know we will benefit from that as well.”

PoliticsDasuki: Court Rejects Fg’s Request For Secret Trial by mile12crises(op): 4:09pm On Apr 19, 2016
ABUJA – The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court,Tuesday, declined to allow the Federal Government to try the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki, retd, secretly. The four-count criminal charge pending against Dasuki before the court borders on money laundering and his alleged illegal possession of firearms.

While refusing the application by FG, trial Justice Ademola Adeniyi ordered that the defendant who has been in detention since November 3, 2015, should be granted access to his family members and lawyers. The court said there was no point for it to make an order allowing FG to mask the witnesses billed to testify in the matter or to allow them to bear pseudo names.
Justice Adeniyi noted that FG had in the charge against Dasuki, supplied names and addresses of the 11 witnesses it intends to call against the defendant, a document he said was already in the public domain.

Besides, the court maintained that there was no evidence to indicate that the life of any of the witnesses was being threatened in any way, stressing that the defendant was not charged for acts of terrorism. It therefore ‎refused FG’s application for only lawyers and accredited Journalists to be allowed inside the court room during the trial. Dasuki’s lawyer, Mr. Ahmed Raji, SAN, earlier told the court that operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, kept his client incommunicado since December 29, 2015, when he was re-arrested upon perfection of his bail conditions.

Raji who insisted that the protracted incarceration of his client has greatly hampered his right to prepare his defence, told the court that the DSS recently blocked Dasuki’s 95 years old father from seeing him. He said Dasuki’s aged father who had gone to see his detained son along with the former Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki and other family members, was denied access to the defendant.

Consequently, Justice Adeniyi, ordered the security agency to grant Dasuki access to his visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays for at least two hours. He said such meetings should take place in the Interview Room at the DSS Headquarters and the Federal High Court premises in Abuja. Specifically, the court directed that the defendant should on each of the visiting days, be granted access to four lawyers and two members of his family.

PoliticsRe: Gbajabiamila Writes Chinese Leader•’fayose’s Letter Amounts To Sabotage’ by mile12crises:

•’Fayose’s letter amounts to sabotage’

House of Representatives Majority leader Femi Gbajabiamila has described Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose as a meddlesome interloper following the letter he wrote to Chinese President Xi Jinping on the alleged $6 billion loan sought by Nigeria from China.

In a letter to the Chinese leader yesterday, Gbajabiamila said Fayose ignorantly overreached himself and wilfully breached the constitution by failing to defend the oath he swore to.

The House leader, who said members of the lower chamber were worried by the flagrant abuse of office by Fayose, however, asked the Chinese leader to ignore him as he showed lack of understanding of the workings of the federal system of government.

It reads: “My attention has been drawn to a letter written to you by a governor of one of the states of in Nigerian, wherein the governor purported to speak on behalf of the Nigerian people, describing himself as a stakeholder in the Nigerian ‘project’.

“Ordinarily, I would not join issues with the governor but as the leader of the House of Representatives, I am saddled with the responsibility of driving government business and policies in the House.

“It is, therefore, incumbent upon me to set the records straight, though I am sure the letter written to you by the governor will probably receive little (if any) attention from your high office, assuming it even gets to you.

“Mr. President, Nigeria as you well-know is not a project as erroneously described by the governor, but a nation as all others in the comity of nations. It is also a federal republic operating under the principles of administrative and fiscal federalism.

“As such, as most democracies with a federal structure, Nigeria operates a three-tier government and adheres to the principle of separation of powers, which is both vertical and horizontal. Horizontal between the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches and vertical between the federal, state and local governments.

“To this extent, it is a clear affront on our constitution and ultra vires his mandate for a governor of a federating state to delve into any matter outside his state, particularly as it concerns international agreements between two sovereign nations.”

The letter added: “Therefore a governor who overreaches himself and acts outside his constitutional mandate can at best be described legally as a meddlesome interloper…

“Finally Mr. President, yes we are a democratic nation and yes citizens do have a right to freedom of expression (though not absolute), however this letter to you by an opposition governor is a new low in opposition politics.”

“What the state governor has done amounts to attempted economic sabotage and subversion. I ask, therefore, that you excuse the vituperations and exuberance of the governor as just that,” it said.

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Tuesday ambushed the convoy of the Acting General Officer Commanding, GOC, 7 Division, the Nigerian Army has said.
The Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, said in a statement that “the leading elements of the Acting General Officer Commanding, GOC, 7 Division Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu’s leading convoy was about 8.30am on Tuesday morning ambushed by suspected Boko Haram terrorists enroute to visit troops in Bama, Borno state, north east Nigeria”.
He said “although 1 soldier lost his live and 2 others were injured, they were able to clear the ambush, killing some of the terrorists and recovered vehicle and weapons from them”.

He said the recovered items include a Toyota Hilux vehicle, 2 AK-47 rifles and several ammunitions.
The Acting GOC has continued his operational visit to Bama, while the body of the late soldier and the wounded had been evacuated to Maiduguri, the statement added.
He added that Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Yusuf Buratai, a lieutenant general, has also spoken with the GOC.

“The Nigerian Army wish to reiterate its unalloyed commitment and determination to continue to clear the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists wherever they might be hiding,” he said.
The attack came a day after soldiers clashed with Boko Haram militants in Borno State.

Elder statesman and a former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav has explained why there is ongoing scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit across the nation.
Tsav said the unending fuel crisis experienced in the country was caused by a high level corruption in the oil sector.

Tsav made the disclosure on Monday in Makurdi, the Benue State capital while addressing newsmen.

He also warned that the situation was becoming a source of embarrassment to the government and people of Nigeria.

He alleged that “an oil cartel in the country is frustrating government’s concerted efforts to address the issue thereby inflicting hardship on Nigerians and embarrassing the country.

“I urge the government to take decisive action to address the situation by taking steps to expose the cartel and the masterminds of this embarrassment so as to sanitise the system.”

Speaking further, the outspoken retired police officer regretted that high profile corrupt individuals were still walking freely in the streets despite the anti-graft war of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He maintained that the fight would only be commendable when those indicted of looting the treasury were sent to jail.

“You go to our prisons and see petty thieves who stole handsets that were eventually recovered, serving long jail terms while those who stole our commonwealth are walking the streets as free men.

“I do not even subscribe to plea bargain because that will depict clearly that our democracy is like animal farm where some animals are more equally than the others. My position is that those who stole should be punished,” he added.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has said the country did not take any loan from the Republic of China as publicized in the media.

According to the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicicty, Mr Femi Adesina, the Commander-in-Chief only brought investment in order to chart new frontiers that will strengthen economic relationship between both countries.

Adesina who made the statement yesterday in Lagos during a live-television programme, also said government was a continuum and the present administration is doing its best at touching areas aimed at bringing about economic reformation that will benefit Nigerians.

In his own words:
"Nigeria is not negotiating any loan with China but is discussing ways of investment that will open up many areas that can be of benefit for all the masses."

It elicits laughter in international circles when Nigerian leaders talk of RESTORING Nigeria's LOST GLORY.
Which lost glory?
When was this glory achieved and when was it lost? Maybe, it was during colonialism; under army command and jackboot rule; no, perhaps, it was during the time Nigeria had so much money that Gowon had no idea what to do with it, or during GEJ when oil was selling at $120 p.b?

Nigerian leaders should stop deceiving themselves and the people they claim to lead. Nigeria has never been able to attain the status of credible nationhood let alone glory in the 100 years since Mr. Lugard cobbled it together.

So, when Oyegun makes oxymoronic statements about Buhari restoring the NATION's lost glory OUTSIDE Nigeria, he makes knowledgeable people laugh double time.
First there is no lost glory to restore, and second, if you wish to restore any glory, lost or found, the idea place to start is at home; make Nigerians feel glorious at home so that the world can take notice and shout their ovations at our gloriousness.

If what Oyegun said reflects the quality of the leadership of the ruling party in Nigeria, then the country is doomed!

A person who proposes that some heads be examined simply because they oppose the frequency of foreign trips by our President!

A person who claims that it was the crash of our economy by the previous administrations that led to the crash of the crude oil price in the international market from $120 to a miserable $30 to $40!

We really have to consider whose heads to examine!

BENIN—NATIONAL Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, weekend, defended President Muhammadu Buhari’s foreign trips, saying that people like Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State and other critics of the president over his foreign trips need their heads examined. Saying that Fayose was ignorant of the problems confronting the nation and the solutions to them, he insisted that President Buhari was on the verge of restoring the nation’s lost glory outside the country, noting that the President’s foreign trips had gone a long way in helping to save the nation after what he described as Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s most disastrous outing in 16 years.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Edo State, Oyegun noted that the forces of darkness and economic saboteurs opposed to the nation’s growth and development were bent on frustrating the efforts of the APC-led administration under Buhari in his efforts at rescuing the nation from the ongoing fuel crisis and revitalizing the ailing economy. Governor Fayose had last week allegedly written a letter to the Chinese government asking it to shun President Buhari’s proposal to secure a $6 billion loan for Nigeria.

But Oyegun, who reacted to the criticisms, said: “Most people do not recognise the very sorry state of the nation’s economy and the fact that the country’s economy was run aground and crashed, which contributed in no small measure to the crash of crude oil from N120 per barrel to a miserable N30 to N40 per barrel at the international market.”
