PREACHING and TEACHING are two different things. When talking about TEACHING it's what has been established that you can inculcate with the act of teaching but as for preaching it has two facets:
[1] Warning message
[2] Declaring God's judgment.

In the case of Nineveh Jonah was to DECLARE God's message to Ninevites that's why he never expected them to repent because he wasn't warning them. Had it been he warned them it would have been a two way expectation whether they will yield and be spared or ignore and be destroyed.
Jonah declared destruction on Nineveh anticipating evil because God never told him to preach for the nation to repent!

And the countdown began as Jonah wakes up each day to declare the remaining days from 40-39-38-37-36-35.........10-9-8-7-6

He never preached nor taught a single thing in Nineveh!

But with the New Covenant {Jeremiah 31:33} people from other nations can become friends of YHWH because geographical location doesn't count in the New Covenant! John 4:22-24

So who connected you with YHWH when you're not an Israelite neither a citizen of Israel living close to the temple in Jerusalem?
