In 1999, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elected Governor
of Lagos State. His then party, the Alliance for Democracy
(AD) produced all the governors of the South West.
By 2003, Tinubu was the only governor left in the AD. He
was under pressure to decamp but he stayed. He built the
party and it became stronger.
For the eight years that he ruled Lagos, he hired several
guys to work with him. I think he carefully picked them.
Apart from using them to work in his government, he also
groomed them for the future.
Eight years down the line, see where those Tinubu guys are
today -
1. Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN was Tinubu's Attorney General
and Commissioner for Justice. He is today, Nigeria's Vice
President.

2. Rauf Aregbesola was Tinubu's Commissioner for Works.
Today he is serving his second tenure as Governor of Osun
State.

3. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN was Tinubu's Chief of Staff
and successor in office. He is today Nigeria's Minister of
Power, Works and Housing.

4. Alhaji Lai Mohammed was Tinubu's first Chief of Staff.
He is today, Nigeria's Minister of Information.

5. Babatunde Fowler was appointed by Tinubu as Chairman
of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service. Today, he is
the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue
Service.

At the National Assembly, there are countless "Tinubu boys"
who have occupied and are still occupying seats till today.
Since 1999, the Tinubu camp has produced almost 98% of
the members of the National Assembly from Lagos State.
Forget politics, this man is a political enigma.
Rewind to 1999, I am sure most of us have forgotten the
names of the People who were elected Governors then.
Some of them have gone out of circulation. Some are
gasping for breath politically. Indeed, most of them are no
longer relevant today.
Who still remembers Mbadinuju of Anambra State, Jolly
Nyame of Taraba, Mohammed Lawal of Kwara, Segun
Osoba of Ogun, Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto, Achike
Udenwa of Imo, Victor Attah of Akwa Ibom, Orji Uzor Kalu of
Abia? That one has lost two consecutive senatorial
elections.
But Tinubu has not only managed to remain extremely
relevant, he has continued to control Lagos politics 100%.
Not only that, he manages to carry his boys along and today
they occupy critical positions in our national life.
Take it or leave it, Tinubu is today, Nigeria's most powerful
politician. It didn't just happen by chance. He worked very
hard for it. Very very hard.
The hallmark of a true leader is not just the ability to rule
well but also the ability to nurture and groom his associates.

Why Radio Biafra is a terrorist organisation:
As you might have been briefed by the National Intelligence
Agency (NIA), the State Security Service (SSS), and the
Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), to the effect that Radio
Biafra operating under the aegis of Indigenous People of
Biafra (IPOB) is a terrorist organisation, whose sole aim is
to cause civil disorder and the eventual disintegration of
Nigeria, we write you on this matter of grave national
importance.
Your Excellency, it is rather unfortunate and regrettable that
some fellow Nigerians are so disenfranchised, such that
their capacity for common sense reasoning seems to have
gone obsolete. Otherwise, how does one explain this bizarre
phenomenon whereby a criminal with zero ideology and
twisted morals, like the proprietor of Radio Biafra, can have
a following of any description in Nigeria?

Radio Biafra broadcasts cause civil unrest:
Today, Radio Biafra broadcasts lies, abuse, and hatred, with
a view to causing civil unrest and eventual destruction of
Nigeria. Cursing Nigerian leaders, calling Nigeria a “zoo”
and Nigerians as “animals” is nothing but provocation and
grandeur treachery. The attempts so far made by the
Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to jam the
treacherous Radio Biafra have not been successful. In any
case, we are of the view that jamming the pirate station is
like taking medicine to cure the symptoms of an illness,
rather than curing the root cause of the illness itself.
The British Police and MI5 cannot deny knowledge of the
threats posed to the corporate existence of Nigeria by this
pirate radio station and its criminal proprietors. We have
already witnessed senseless demonstrations and riots in
certain states in the South South and South East. We have
also heard how enemies of the Nigerian state, who brought
us misery, death, and destruction over the last sixteen years
are already taking advantage of this volatile situation to
cause even more confusion among the population.

It is better to deal with pirate station decisively:
Your Excellency, we at CUPS contend that it is better to deal
with this matter decisively while it is in infancy, before
things get out of order. We strongly believe that following
diplomatic channels to shut down Radio Biafra is the most
effective solution under the current circumstances.
To this end, it is our humble opinion, your Excellency, that
you summon the British High Commissioner in Abuja to
make Nigeria’s stand clear on the matter. Nigeria’s stand
on IPOB and Biafra is no different to Britain’s stand on
dealing with the Irish Republican Army (IRA), and its stand
on Scottish independence from the United Kingdom.
Your Excellency, Nigeria is a major diplomatic and trading
partner with Britain. This strategic relationship can be
brought to bear, in order to bring this matter to an amicable
conclusion.
May God Save Nigeria and Nigerians. Amen.

Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, has
made a shocking revelation about the state of the
Boko Haram insurgency in the state, Sahara Reporters
say. “They(Boko Haram) are at present controlling two local
governments in Borno State; Abadam and Mobbar and
they are partially in Marte.” he said in a brief meeting
with Secretary to the Government of the Federation
(SGF) Mr. Babachir David Lawal.
"At some point, Boko Haram overran 20 out of our 27
local government areas in Borno State. They overran
four local government areas in Adamawa and two in
Yobe.” However Lt. Gen Buratai, the chief of army staff has
disputed Shettima’s claim.
“No Boko Haram is holding any territory in Nigeria at the momment, I have not heard any Boko Haram
member or leader making such claim, they are no more
in control,”, Buratai said on Monday at the
Headquarters of 3 Division, the Marxwel Khobe
Cantonment. “We are more determined and we have more
professional soldiers on the ground, we have been
trained and equipped and ready to face the challenge,
if any, posed by Boko Haram”, he added.
Shettima had once incurred the wrath of the military
when he said the Nigerian military was ill-equipped to
fight the Boko Haram insurgents. He was abused in
return. However months after top military brass admitted he
was correct.

The Rivers state chapter of the All Progressives Congress
(APC) says Nyesom Wike, the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) candidate whose victory at the April
governorship election was nullified on Saturday by the
state governorship election petition tribunal, is
“planning to run away”.
The party said though they were expecting total ban of
Chief Nyesom Wike from further participation in the
politics of Nigeria seeing the orchestration of the
number of deaths of River state people in order for him
to be installed as a Care-Taker Govrnor, all the same,
we thank the Tribunal for installing hope to the
downtrodden people of Rivers state who have borne
the brunt of Wike's illegal and visionless administration
in the past five months.
“Wike’s tragic entry into the Brick House seat of power
has only succeeded to bring back criminality in various
forms in the once peaceful Rivers State as kidnapping,
robbery and organised crimes have being on the
increase since his evil arrival.
“We thank the tribunal for allowing itself to be used by
God to uproot the impostor governor, Chief Nyesom
Wike, who has these past five months brought
monumental suffering to our people in cahoots with
some mischievous and misguided politicians whose
only understanding of governance is blackmailing and

Punch News – After three postponements, a former
Governor of Rivers State and President Muhammadu
Buhari’s ministerial nominee, Rotimi Amaechi, was finally
screened on Thursday by the Senate but the exercise left
the Peoples Democratic Party members of the Senate
alleging betrayal.
The opposition senators have also threatened to oppose
Amaechi’s confirmation when the time comes.
They said their All Progressives Congress colleagues in the
upper legislative chamber betrayed the agreement they had
not to screen the ex-Rivers governor given the report of the
panel that investigated the petitions against him.
The ethics committee of the Senate was said to have
advised that Amaechi screening be left till the end of the
cases of alleged corruption he has in court.
One PDP senator, who asked not to be named, said, “We
had opened Thursday’s sitting with a closed session, which
lasted for 50 minutes to sort out knotty issues relating to
the screening of Amaechi.
“During the closed session, Chairman of the Ethics
Committee, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, briefed us on the
report and indicated that the committee reported that the
issue regarding Amaechi’s petition was in court and that the
Senate should suspend action on his screening, pending the
resolution of the court issues.”
Another senator, who said a similar thing, said the PDP
senators were surprised when the Senate President, Bukola
Saraki, and the other APC senators started asking Amaechi
questions.
The two and others alleged that all the senators at the
closed session had agreed that the PDP senators would
insist on not having anything to do with Amaechi, while their
APC colleagues also agreed that they would only ask the
nominee to only “take a bow and go.”
They said they were surprised seeing Saraki and other APC
members asking Amaechi questions.
At the screening, which lasted for about 55 minutes, the
PDP senators did not ask the nominee any question with the
Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, saying his members
would not participate in the screening of Amaechi until the
outcome of his court case.
Akpabio also raised a point of order that no controversial
matter be brought before the Senate.
He said, “My point of order is under Order 43. The PDP
senators seated here will not have any question for the
nominee because we have just received the report of the
ethics committee bordering on corruption and all sorts of
things from the Senator Anyanwu committee and we have
not debated that report at all. So, we have little or nothing to
ask the nominee.”
Akpabio then asked his PDP colleagues whether he had
spoken their minds and the opposition senators responded
in the affirmative.
The PUNCH learnt however that the APC senators had
pleaded with their PDP counterparts during the closed
session to allow Amaechi to be screened while the debate of
the report of the ethics committee continued.
The PDP senators were also said to have agreed to the
suspension of the debate on the report of the ethics
committee only if their APC colleagues would also ask the
Rivers nominee to take a bow and go so as not to “cause
controversy.”
Amaechi had arrived on the premises of the National
Assembly around 10.30am, dressed in Rivers attire. His
name was Number One on the order paper, with other
nominees. –
Heineken Lokpobri (Bayelsa); Omoleye Daramola (Ondo);
Adewole Folorunso (Osun); Baba Shehuri Mustapha (Borno);
and Ocholi James (Kogi ) – listed in that order.
The business of the day commenced with the laying of the
report of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and
Public Petitions, on the alleged fraud allegation against
Amaechi, by Anyanwu. On the directive of the Senate
president, Amaechi was led into the chamber moments later
by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National
Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang; the National
Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Senator
Olorunnimbe Mamora; Governor Rochas Okorocha; Rivers
APC governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside; Senator
Victor Ndoma-Egba and a former Speaker of the House of
Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba.
Amaechi explained details of his achievements as Rivers
State governor for eight years and pledged to improve on
the relationship between the executive and the legislature.
In a reply to Akpabio’s earlier order, the Senate Leader, Ali
Ndume, had raised a point of order under Order 53 (9).
Ndume said, “My position and by the grace of God, as a
Senate Leader, I want to guide the Senate properly. The
committee report has been laid by the committee that we
assigned to do the job of ethics and privileges and the
procedure is that after laying the report, we will make copies
of that report.
“This is a confirmation hearing, it does not stop the
confirmation hearing but we are glad that you have said that
you are not asking the nominee questions. We must as well,
as a former speaker and as a former governor, ask the
nominee to take a bow and go.”
Amaechi was Speaker of the Rivers State House of
Assembly before becoming governor in 2007.
The drama of the ex-governor’s screening continued with
Akpabio interrupting Ndume and telling Amaechi, “Mr
Nominee, the leader has spoken and by implication, the
leader is saying that today, the Senate should have a rule
that every nominee should bow and go. Maybe the leader
did not hear me well, what you (APC senators) are now
saying is that you can’t ask questions?”
Ndume also stood up again and said, “Mr chairman, as I
said, I raised two orders. One: It is my responsibility as the
Majority Leader. Two, on the other order that I raised, the
gentleman you see here as a nominee, it’s my responsibility
to market him here before the Senate.
“It is you people that are given the privilege to ask questions
and you said….”
Calling his colleagues “you people” led to an uproar and
Saraki had to apologise on behalf of Ndume and asked the
PDP senators to accord Amaechi the usual courtesies of
former lawmakers who had appeared before the Senate.
Amaechi was thereafter asked questions on the challenges
in the Niger Delta; his alleged indictment by the Rivers State
Government Commission of Inquiry and his view on
corruption.
At this point, Akpabio left the chamber.
Amaechi was again asked further questions by many APC
senators before he was asked to take a bow and go.
As part of his answers, he said, “Corruption is very difficult
to define. If you are a public officer and you don’t take a
bribe, I have never taken a bribe in my life but if they send a
girl to you and you sleep with the girl and do her favour, you
are corrupt.
“Corruption is a very wide concept. If people are contesting
a position and you offer your son, brother or sister an
opportunity to hold that position, probably the person is not
qualified, you are corrupt. So, it is difficult for me to define
corruption.”
He said the APC used anti-corruption to sell the Buhari
brand to Nigerians.
Amaechi said, “We sold to the public the fact that there was
massive corruption in the system and that there was the
need to fight that corruption. We agreed that the only way to
fight that corruption is to put a new government.
“So, we had to get a signpost candidate. The signpost
candidate is a man who the Nigerian public has seen as an
incorruptible president; that was why the party had to put
President Buhari forward. We thought that there was a need
to do things differently.
“I thought that as good as the former President (Goodluck
Jonathan) might have been, I don’t think he was suitable
enough for the growth and development of Nigeria. So, we
needed to offer an opportunity to somebody we believe is
better than the former President.
Amaechi denied being indicted by the Rivers State
Government Commission of Inquiry instituted to investigate
his stewardship as the governor for eight years.
He said, “There was nowhere I was indicted (in the judicial
panel report). I was born to test my rights and fight for my
rights, I was once a student union leader and believe me, if
there is one man who does not like corruption, I do not like
corruption.
“I came here with a copy of the so-called panel report, there
is no where that the panel indicted me, I am ready to tender
this report before the Senate. I was ready for the questions
on it and I brought the panel report so the Senate can
juxtapose it with the White Paper.
“However, because there are challenges, people in Nigerian
politics believe that there is the need to compromise and be
able to manage yourself around; I will do that but where it
clashes with my principles I find it a bit difficult to do what
people expect me to do.”
Ameachi stressed the need to diversify the nation’s
economy, improve on power supply and invest heavily in
agriculture as a means of providing jobs for the youths.
He said, “When you deal with the issue of massive
unemployment, you deal with the change in the economic
mantra. The mono-economic situation that we have cannot
survive. Nigeria cannot continue to be what we are if we
continue to rely on oil.
“For me, I agree with the President that there is the need to
invest in agriculture. If we invest in agriculture and
technology, you will hire as many workers as possible.
“Government must invest in that regard. We must diversify
the economy. Mining is another area that God has blessed
us with and we also need to invest in education because
some of these people are unemployable.
“We need to invest hugely in education. We did that in
Rivers State. For four, five, six years, our budget was
highest in education. So, if this happens, we will employ
quite a number of workers.”
Amaechi also justified his radical posture when he was the
Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. He said it was
meant to check executive recklessness.
He said, “The governors’ forum started as a check to
executive recklessness. The Senate president (Saraki) was
the chairman and with other governors who are here today
as senators, including Senator (Danjuma) Goje, to make me
the chairman of the forum for the first time.
“It happened in Kwara State and we checked the excesses,
including the expenditure of the oil subsidy. There is a case
in court up till now stopping the Federal Government from
drawing money from the account to fund oil subsidy.
“I think that the radical posture of the governors’ forum led
to the former president asking me that I had turned the
forum into a union, so it’s no longer a governors’ forum, it is
now a trade union and all we were doing was to defend the
lives of Nigerians and ensured that the money accruable to
the country was judiciously utilised.”
Amaechi was greeted with a loud round of applause from his
supporters when he emerged from the senate chamber. The
supporters were seen rendering solidarity songs.
The other nominees listed for the day were also screened by
the senators.

Before I begin, I would like to ask a question. When you go to a theatre to watch a movie, and find that there are no tickets left, what do you do? Do you say,” It’s OK, we can come another time.” Or do you buy a ticket in black black market, paying N2000 for a ticket when it actually costs N1000? The answer to this question shows the level of corruption we found ourselves today. This article is aptly timed; since Borno central bye election is around the corner in which some corrupt personalities are trying to occupy the seat under the guise of SAK mantra. Today, corruption is one of the greatest factors hindering development and stifling the realisation of dividends of democracy under the leadership of this present State Government in our State Borno. Corruption affects the growth of our dear state adversely under the state government. It reduces the Government’s income, and creates inequalities in distribution of income and wealth in our state. Corruption is really affecting the development, economically, socially and politically. Corruption may come in many forms, often in politics. Politicians on a quite regular basis have been found guilty of corruption. Politicians under the leadership of this state government use unethical techniques to gain an advantage in an election, to gain more money, votes or to acquire ungotten wealth under the guise of insurgency. Corruption is caused mainly by the desires of power and want. Corruption creates a negative atmosphere. Detrimental corruption does not bring about any good, As Shakespeare said,”The best things corrupted become the worst.” Is dirty hands necessary in politics as Kashimiyyas do always claim? Corruption Under the leaderahip of KSM has been a stigma of the government since what feels like the beginning of time. Yet, it’s also one of the areas that seem to have never been through an internal cleansing under Borno State administration. Some (Kashimiyyas) dare say that getting your hands dirty is a necessary evil to be a politician, and it’s that kind of thinking that puts our State in these seemingly impossible situations. Is it necessary to play dirty to make it in the world of politics as they claimed? No, it definitely isn’t and shouldn’t. Being a politician should be the most selfless job available. You’re supposed to take yourself out of the equation and do what’s necessary for the people you’re representing, not what will line your pockets with more money which is often the case (Kashimiyyas' style). Corrupt politicians in our State have forgotten the core principles of being a “man or woman of the people”; they should be representing their constituents, which are often left no the wayside with their pockets turned out, wondering what happened. Besides this, getting your hands dirty only makes politics all the more difficult in the end. When you stop fighting for what’s right and what the people need, you start waging pointless battles for the sake of those you made your dirty promises to. How many standoffs would honestly be resolved in a matter of days (opposed to the weeks or months even years) if their reasoning was sound and just? e.g. Lagos Street Road. It wasn’t a matter of how much money they would lose if a specific bill was to pass, but instead, was a matter of how much the people of each state would be hurt? Politics can be a lot cleaner and, without a doubt, far simpler if people stop trying to sate their seemingly endless greed; saying that you have to get your hands dirty in order to participate in politics sends all the wrong messages. “The hill” shouldn’t be a wolves den where people are devouring each other, or backstabbing one another for a quick buck (overnight enrichment). Politics should be about something more, a duty to the people that have put their trust in you. When you play dirty, remember who is going to suffer in the end. Corruption under this very present Borno State Administration is one of the deadly, undesirable and wicked sins that has been imposed on the innocent people by some hungry looking monsters. It is omnipresent, almost like a distorted, antithetical version of God for the present times. It doesn’t sound euphonious when we hear that it has not only led to the malfunctioning of the administrative system and poor law and order, but also some serious causes like poverty and redtapism, which has led to the society’s disability. It has distorted all values and made mincemeat of morality, truth and virtue. It has entered into every single aspect of our lives becoming all-pervasive just similar to the air we breathe. It is growing massively in huge proportions and there is barely any sphere of social, political, economic and even religious activity that is free from graft, fraud and corruption of some kind under the leadership of Kashimiyyas. It is now regarded as a fact of life and an evil which is inseparable with which we have to live with throughout. It happens as much as in the daylight, as it is done behind the closed doors. It is under every stone we turn and every door we open. Thus, it is this “corruption” that can be considered as a deadly sin in our society and it is a shame that we are being evasive and denying this fact by considering it as a habit and a part of our lives. Human beings are full of temptations. After all human beings are human beings. And in fact, gold and cash acts as a bait to these politicians and officials who are fond of bribe in any way. They just need something to avoid the itching on their hands. But the stink lies not only in the prevalence of the lure of gold, but in the hypocrisy that accompanies it by their so called supporters under the guise of SAKK. It’s really disheartening when a corrupt person after taking a bribe, talks about the high moral standards and urges people to follow the principles and ideologies of Baba Buhari, and remain honest, true and just in whatever they do. Such hypocrisy complexes the offence, but our so called Commissioners, politicians and officials are getting callous and do not pay any heed. They have a belief that it is all a way of life and a part of their routine and describe it as unavoidable and an incurable disease. Almost everyone under this state government, from government officials to the judiciary people to the private corporate gurus who are answering the name Kashimiyyas, all are thirsting for personal profits. The energetic youth today can be one source that can actually uproot the very weed of corruption. the is why the most popular slogan "BORNO TAFI JAM'IYYA" came into existance among the youths of our dear state and it spreading everywhere. It can act like a ‘vanarsena’ and attack with full force the authorities which play the major culprit feeding this malady. Positive reforms should be brought out, so that we not only dream but also work together actively hand in hand towards developing our state that is free from the evil called ‘CORRUPTION’ under this State Government. Reports reaching my desk indicated that there is a high suspicion placed on Borno State by the military formation that is fighting insurgency in the north east. According to yellow report the action came about when the military personnel informed and seeks permission from the state controllers to enter Dikwa town as tradition demands, but the convoy was attacked by fully equipped insurgents who seem to have accurate information about the movement of the personnel. Not known to the informants and their artists there was contemporaneous move from both the sky and ground in the military tactics, hence the attackers were crushed by the air troop and some were arrested. The yellow information revealed further that in order to determined the source of the attackers information about that movement, the military set a trap and once again informed the state on another trip set to reach Monguno town, yet the military convoy was attacked by the insurgents which were defeated for the second time by the fully prepared soldiers including their top ranking in the journey of test mission. Then the yellow report continued by saying that it was decided by the military command that the final test shall be on no information mood to Biu via Damboa which was the dangerous root as insurgents threat is concerned to see whether the insurgents were acting based on information or not and perhaps are being fed within the military or from the other side, but the convoy went to Biu and returned back to Maiduguri without any qualms. Thus, that was when the military intelligence comes to identify the possible outlet of the insurgents acting on available information outside the military that attacked its convoy on Dikwa and Monguno missions; and that the previous year’s sabotaging of the military efforts could not be unconnected to similar leakages in the past. Hence, it led to perhaps suggesting that all the recent bombings in and around the city of Maiduguri, and the compromise by some members of the Government owned Civilian JTF in each of the explosions within Maiduguri is pointing an accusing finger on the state controllers and brought about placing a security surveillance on them. And the yellow report finally said that perhaps based on the aforesaid and observation there is a serious and high recommendation to PMB that should there be any explosion in or around Maiduguri the controlling of the state should be suspended to avoid complication and sabotage towards ending the insurgency in Borno State and the north east. Ours is to observe and to inform the public on happenings in and around them, and it is left for those involved to give us their own side of the story, while we pray for peace to rein in our society once again. Former Rivers state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi can
become a Minister without undergoing Senate Screening.
According to the Nigerian Constitution, if the Senate
does not confirm or reject Amaechi within twenty-one
working days of the receipt of nomination he
automatically becomes a Minister of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria. See excerpt from Nigerian constitution below:

(1) There shall be such offices of Ministers of the
Government of the Federation as may be established
by the President.
(2) Any appointment to the office of Minister of the
Government of the Federation shall, if the nomination
of any person to such office is confirmed by the
Senate, be made by the President.
(3) Any appointment under subsection (2) of this
section by the President shall be in conformity with the
provisions of section 14(3) of this Constitution:-
provided that in giving effect to the provisions
aforesaid the President shall appoint at least one
Minister from each State, who shall be an indigene of
such State.
(4) Where a member of the National Assembly or of a
House of Assembly is appointed as Minister of the
Government of the Federation, he shall be deemed to
have resigned his membership of the National
Assembly or of the House of Assembly on his taking
the oath of office as Minister.
(5) No person shall be appointed as a Minister of the
Government of the Federation unless he is qualified for
election as a member of the House of Representatives.
(6) An appointment to any of the offices aforesaid shall
be deemed to have been made where no return has
been received from the Senate within twenty-one
working days of the receipt of nomination by the
Senate.

Three times gubernatorial aspirant under the platform of the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Muttawalli Kashim
Imam has apologized to the people of Borno State on behalf
of the political leaders and elders of the state for supporting
the choice of Governor Kashim Shettima in 2011.
Muttawalli Kashim Imam, was speaking on Monday, in
Maiduguri, the Borno State capital while addressing
supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at
Forshams hall venue of the press conference organised by
the Borno PDP.
He said three reasons made them to come together as
leaders and elders in the state, which included: to make
every effort to see to the end of insurgency in the state, to
ensure that the state is on the same page with the federal
government and to apologise to Borno citizens for the error
they made in putting Kashim Shettima as governor.
“His government has failed the people of Borno State; he
has not performed and he has wasted the resources
entrusted in his hands through greed and selfish and
unguarded spendings. We are ready to effect change and
we would commit ourselves to the enthronement of new
government in Borno State come 2015.
“Kashim Shettima told the people of Borno State that he
could not perform because of the insecurity situation in the
state, but we are going to ask him to tell the people of Borno
State what he has done with the 67 billion Naira left for him
by his predecessor as well as the over 400 billion Naira he
received from the federation account as allocation to Borno
State. We must rescue Borno state”, he said.
While advising the people to resist any attempt by
miscreants in leadership position to lure them to fruitless
adventure, he said it was time the people of Borno State
opened their eyes to the truth and be wise in their choice of
leadership in the next election, so that they could be
beneficiaries of the dividends of democracy.

A wise man once told me: “Nigerians are mules, everyone
who can, kicks at them.” The thing is, the more things
change, the more they feel the same. In 1984, Major-
General Muhamadu Buhari as military tyrant diagnosed
“indiscipline” as Nigeria’s national malaise.
The sexy power word in those days was “summarily.”
Buhari promised that the military government of which he
was head would “summarily” deal with any Nigerian who
was found wanting in “discipline.” He quickly launched a
“War Against Indiscipline.” It caught on fire.
Nigerians were pressed to “behave.” They began to queue
for buses and other services in places like Lagos, notorious
for jumping queues. That was the greatest achievement of
WAI: Nigerians learnt to queue. Military governors
sometimes arrived the gates of government secretariats
very early, and waited for government workers who arrived
late.
Late-coming civil servants were humiliated, made to kneel
down irrespective of their office or positions, or age, and
frog-jumped as punishment for coming late to work. In
some cases, they were “summarily dismissed.” Buhari’s
government authorized armed soldiers to raid warehouses,
and seize the goods of traders accused of “hoarding
essential commodities.” That was in a period, of course,
when “ESSENCO”was very scarce. Buhari’s War Against
Indiscipline, stemmed from his genuine convictions that
Nigerians were an undisciplined lot, and had to be forced to
obey the simple laws of the land, and of courtesy.
Recent evidence suggests that Buhari continues to believe
this as a fundamental problem with the Nigerian character.
Last week, our friends, Dr. Barry and Claire Mauer had us
all over for a party for Claire’s birthday at their College Park,
Orlando, home. We were all going at it, with a little wine and
sherry, and that good stuff, when Shanti, another friend of
ours said, “I hear your president say all you Nigerians are
unruly, and you need to stop being unruly!” I too had heard
that the previous day on the BBC.
It was big news for the BBC that president Buhari’s
Independence Day message to Nigerians was that Nigerians
were “unruly.” It triggered their fancy so much that they
made such an event of it. They brought a Nigerian, whose
name I do not now recall, and Ghana’s Elizabeth Ohene, to
talk about the “unruliness” of Nigerians as claimed by a
president who increasingly seems really disconnected from
the Nigerian reality. In the symbolic moment of Nigeria’s
55th anniversary as an Independent nation, more sober
considerations should have been made regarding the
trajectory of Nigeria’s journey, the transitions that have
been made, and the true reasons for the failures of Nigeria.
We should rather celebrate the hardiness and resilience of
Nigerians in the face of a terribly confused administration
as Buhari’s is turning out to be.Ordinary Nigerians must not
be made to carry the can for failed political leadership this
past fifty-five years, of which Buhari has been a distinct
part. The President had not much to say to Nigerians except
that Nigerians are unruly and discourteous, and must
change, in order to achieve development. Actually, this is
the worst Independence Day speech I have heard of any
Nigerian president. It had no concrete facts. It simply was
high on the weed of self-indulgence. On such a symbolic
day, President Buhari should have celebrated Nigeria, and
offered it hope.
There are ordinary Nigerians laboring heroically to turn the
disadvantages of being Nigerian into something hopeful,
and meaningful. Nigerians are not unruly. The Nigerian child
I know is taught, right from the home, to be courteous, and
respectful of people, especially, older people. Nigerians
know to “throway salute” when they meet you. They say,
“Afternoon, sir!” “Enlee ma!” “I boola chi e!” and so on.
Nigerians are not, by their very nature, or even by
acculturation, unruly or discourteous.
Our political leaders have been unruly and discourteous.
Those are the real culprits and makers of our national
malaise. They have very little regard or respect for the civil
and economic rights of Nigerians. Anyone who suddenly
arrives at political office, begins immediately to see the rest
Nigerians as adversaries and enemies; people who must be
contained and repressed, and garrisoned.
Nigerians are constantly infantilized in the minds of the men
and women who arrive at power. That is the true meaning
of unruliness: to ride rough-shod on your county men
because you have the privilege of the protections of public
office.
It is unruly of public office holders to capture the road on a
hot, uncomfortable, tropical day, with sirens and a long
convoy, and horse-whip people to the sideways, and travel
freely while the rest must deal with congested traffic. It is
unruly to shield political power holders behind the barricade
of high walls inside government buildings, while the rest of
Nigerians are left to the vagaries of crime. I think President
Buhari must first, look inward.
As president, propriety demands that he be accompanied by
no more than his police orderly in public, while the secret
service organize his security with unseen and invisible
agents, who mingle with the crowd, without harassing
Nigerians with an overwhelming image of armed power. It is
the image of overwhelming force, especially modeled by the
military that has created the psychological crisis that has
reduced Nigerians to its current social miasma. Nigerians,
subjected to force rather than governance, since 1966, are
suffering from the trauma of social violence, and are
reproducing that violence. They know nothing else but the
unruliness modeled by the makers of the public system: the
government, and political leadership. It will not do merely to
preach order, curtsey in society, when the conditions in
which Nigerians live make it possible.
If there was a well-organized public transport system,
Nigerians would have no need to “rush.” But in a city like
Lagos, with a population over fifteen million, to have only
one means of moving that population is madness in itself. It
is nightmarish, and the social pressure of moving about in
Lagos which ought to, like cities even half its size, have an
underground system, a surface metro system, a water
transport system, as well as well-kept roads that do not clog
up movement, makes courtesy difficult, and unruliness only
a means of survival.
A man who has no access to clean public toilets, must
defecate, and if he cannot find any will be forced to the
indignity of relieving himself in public. To prevent that, it is
incumbent on governments to provide clean public toilets in
strategic places, to prevent such unruliness. The
government itself must model the meaning of courtesy, by
treating the public with the highest respect in public.
A government officer, like a policeman or soldier or tax
collector, who harasses any member of the public is
modeling unruliness; a government who keeps armed
soldiers and police on the highways and streets where they
harass Nigerians, is an unruly administration, and will
reproduce an unruly nation.
A government that offers, not work, but whips to Nigerians,
will create the kind of social pressure that will make civilized
conduct impossible. So, President Buhari should for a
moment, get off the back of Nigerians. Nigerians did not
elect him merely to preach, they elected him to act. So, to
make Nigerians more courteous, the government should
begin a work program, strengthen internal regulations and
enforcement codes in the public service, provide public
infrastructure, enough to make an aggressive search for it
redundant. That will reduce the kind of social pressures that
make Nigerians unruly.
