Wow, this places looks awesome. If everything goes to plan that whole region is going to be a really interesting alternative for holidays. I went to Obudu ranch back in Dec 2004 and was very impressed even then. I went to La Manga in spain last Xmas and this place looks like it could be just as impressive. I'm hoping it's ready on schedule as I can see myself spending Christmas this year there! Keep the info coming, If only they could sort Bar Beach out. Everytime I drive down it I think what a waste. I've been to Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro and Lagos has the natural potential to be up there. |
No chance I'm afraid, the IMPORTED religion from Britain is now far far more ingrained here than in England! It;s well and truly a NIgerian religion now, If you don't go to church in Nigeria you're considered odd, If you do go to Church in England you're considered odd!?! I told one of my colleagues today (after he invited me to Church) If he goes a year with no Church and no praying then I'll go to Church with him for the following year!! When I tell them that I have started to worship Shango they don't quite understand. |
It seems to me like it is just one of those cool trendy things to do in certain circles to make yourself LOOK more spiritual and of course to ensure you are not outdone by those around you that are doing it! Why is that in Anglican churches it hardly ever happens but in Evangelical churches it happens all the time? Is it not just the peer pressure of it all! What's the point in praying when 99% of the time neither you nor anyone around you understands! And when someone does come up with a translation they're probably just making it up? What's the point?? |
I'm very unimpressed with Dare every time I have heard him. Maybe he should stick to singing Hymns in a choir cause he hasn't got what it takes to really be a star! |
I went to a naming ceremony last weekend and at one point in the proceedings the residing pastor broke out praying in tongues: "habbala babbala swhelly flaaba gunmba babala shabala" All of a sudden 4 or 5 other people started up and it wasn't long before almost everyone was at it. To be honest I was quite flabbergasted by it all as it seemed to be some kind of nonsense circus, Have you ever spoken in tongues or interpreted it? It all seems a bit over the top to me! |
I think that Seun's description of how he found Christians offensive was a response to the fact that people were attacking him for posting something that questioned THEIR beliefs, he is trying to show that lots and lots and lots of things that Christians say and believe are automatically offensive and condescending to those of us who don't! All the Christians / Muslims etc are basically telling me that I'm stupid because their way is the ONLY way. If you don't believe it then you are wrong! I find that highly offensive, but unlike all the people who have been complaining I don't care, I'm quite happy for you to state your beliefs as long as you let the rest of us tear it apart! |
Sorry, it's the other way round, the terminal is on the left!! Doh The other shows how far they have gone with the hotel. |
Here are a couple of pics, not very impressive but gives you a vague idea of what's happening. the building on the left is the car park, the right is the terminal
|
Why do people who believe in their "Religions" get so upset when they think that people are insulting their beliefs and being blasphemous etc etc. They seem to have no qualms in being very rude and and offensive when they tell me that I have to go to Chrurch, if I don't believe in Jesus then I've got my whole life all wrong and I'm going to go and rot and burn in the eternal damnation of hell!!! Surely if that's what they think about my life then someone llike Nwoke has the right to say what he thinks about theirs! Stop being so touchy about it, if your belief / religion is really so right then you should invite for it to be questioned, trouble is you just don't have the answers to back it up, it all boils down to your "faith"?!?! |
I'm sure these guys will do a good job at a decent price. As I said if you want it I can give you the name and number of the contact in Lagos. By the way I was interested to read that you are now planning to have the baby in Lagos. My wife and I went to look at Reddington Hospital today which is a brand spanking new state of the art hospital in VI, It is right next to Mega-Plaza and was previously the Cardiac Centre. They have now reopened as a multi-purpose hospital and it is actually much better than the hospital we went to in the UK for our first baby. They couldn't give us the prices today but I imagine it will be a lot, they would confirm by Friday. They are linked with BUPA though. If you have the time it's well worth having a look. You can call them on 01 262 1244. |
This is good info to have, next time I'm at a wedding getting hassled by one of the friendly talking drummers I'll let him know this is the reason my naira is staying in my pocket!!! |
Hi Sibli, In my work we air freight goods everyweek. We use a company called Metropl and the charge about £2.00kg on the gross weight for the air freight cost and then an additional N195kg for the local clearing charges. If you send the things to their office in London they can send them on within 5 days. You can see them at www.metropol-ltd.com They are very reliable and quick. Drop me a line if you want me to give you my contacts details here (mattholmes74@hotmail.com) |
For those of you who haven't had a chance to go THE PALMS shopping mall is a real shining example of how things CAN be done to a WORLD CLASS standard in Nigeria! I believe it is a joint private venture between South Africans and Nigerians. The two main chains involved are: SHOPRITE - a big south african supermarket chain GAME - again a south african general retailer selling everything you can imagine. in addition there are a large number of other retailers from PC / electronics stores / clothes / jewelry / perfume / furniture / flowers. Lots of these are still in the process of setting up but everything is finished to a very high standard. In addition there is a food court area with Nando's , Nigerian food, Pizza etc. and upstairs they are in the process of fininshing off an multi-screen cinema. The other big bonus is that there is more than enough on site parking. @Nwoke there is no doubt that this sort of development is just as important as local grass roots development. Nigeria needs to show the world that it is a good place for foreign investors to come and operate. They will create employment, generate revenue and also raise the general standard of how business is done. In a short space of time in Lagos we now have 3 malls - Silverbird, City Mall and now The Palms, and each one is improving. As a number of posters have said it creates an opportunity for all those who go to shop outside the country to spend their money locally. Your point that it creates a place for people overseas to come and enjoy when they come home is important as well. If Nigeria is serious about attracting visitors to come and spend their pounds and dollars there needs to be a lot more develpoment like this to go alongside the Tejousho's etc. I think we are already seeing this in the Hotel industry and improvements / new builds seem to be happening everywhere. These Malls are all about privae business investing money in infrastructure and local emplyment. The foreign chains are also making Nigeria wake up to what Customer Service is really all about, Lomg may it continue! |
I'm surprised by the amount of facilities they are claiming for the hotel as the space they are building it on looks pretty small to me. The terminal and especially the multi-storey car park do look very well done. I will try and take a pic next time I'm passing and post it. |

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, keep them coming, I don't know what sex the baby is yet, keeping it a surprise. One trouble I have is that it needs to be a name non-yoruba's won't have too much trouble pronouncing, For a boy I like laolu and salewa quite a lot, |
I'm very interested to hear reports of the Miracle weekend. Do we have anyone who got healed personally? Or a family member? What exactly happened there? I deal enough with being in and hearing about go slow everyday so let's hear some details about what went on? I would love it if a board member in a wheelchair can now actually walk!!! |
I think that one of Seun's biggest asset will soon be his email database. As this contiues to grow I'm sure you can use it as a selling point to companies who want to target a Nigerian audience. If you can get people to give as much info as possible you will have a very valuable marketing tool which you can sell to the big companies. I used to work for an internet site in the UK and that was the key to our success. If you have 20,000 Nigerian subscribers who are between 20 - 30 you can go to someone like GLO and say sponsor an email campaign to these people for N20,000 a day. As the numbers grow and the info you have increases the more you can charge. This time next year you'll be a millionaire! |
My 2 year old Daughter sums it up perfectly when her cartoons are taken away from her, "Daddy, NEPA's RUBBISH" |
I'm from Sunny England, although Lagos is now my home. ![]() Not sure where I would say I'm from in England though, |
I'm having anothe baby later this year and after realising what a good cross section of people we have on this forum I want to find out: What are your favourite names for: BOY GIRL And if they have one what is the meaning? I'm English and married to a Nigerian. We named our first daughter Ololade. I'm not worried about sticking to English or Yoruba names so you never know if you come up with something good maybe I'll use it!! |
@4get_me you make some very good points. At the end of the day the responsibility does have to be with every individual to make a decision on how they live their lives to try and improve Nigeria. However people and societies need leaders to set an example and be role models. Especially for the uneducated masses being shown a way to conduct yourself is crucial. The trouble it is that Politicians and Pastors give only one example which is GREED. Take what you can and spend it as lavishly and quickly as possible. Basically make a lot of money very fast. This is the kind of example which has created the mentality that corruption is the way forward. The Pastors have done so well that they are basically preaching 419 advance fee fraud to what I see is a greedy audience. IF YOU GIVE ME 10% (or more) NOW, YOU'RE GOING TO GET A LOT MORE LATER ON. In essence that is exactly what the 419 boys say in their email. It's a greedy philosophy hidden behind people claiming it is Christian. If you spend most of your time outside of work at church then your way of thinking is hugely shaped by that church. So many people are led by example, It's scary that so many have bad examples on both fronts |
Now I've been to church a lot of times in my life and there's no doubt that "when the spirit comes" and everyone is singing and praying and praising there is a buzz which makes you tingle and you can really believe that you can feel the power / prescence of God. The trouble is when you go and watch a football match, and the whole crowd is up on their feet with their scarves raised in the air singing "you'll never walk alone" I get exactly the same uplifting feeling. In fact if you watched last year Liverpool even had a night of Miracles in Istanbul!!!! Some people get so obsessed with football in the same way people do with Church - At least one day a week is totally taken up with worship of their team. They get dressed up specially to go an watch. Each follower of a team in football believes that there's is the best and looks down on the others. They even go to war with each other sometimes! I don't know about you but I've given up going to Church and now worship at the house of Rafa! |
It's almost 12.00 so I'm already switching off from work and wondering what I'm going to do with my 4 DAYS OFF!!! Help me out with some suggestions of the best things to do this Easter weekend in Lagos, Is it the Beach, or a Bar, or stay in Bed!? Let me know what's up? |
Try any books by Richard Price, Wanderers, Blood Brothers, Clockers, Freedomland. If you like gritty urban tales. I've just read them all a second time and enjoyed them even more. |
There's nothing wrong with kids doing a bit of hard graft to teach them some values, The problem here is that too many young kids get sent to houses to work for a pittance and are quite honestly treated like crap. There has to be some form of protection for them surely. I've seen a number of very very young girls working at peoples houses, they have been bought over from Cotonou, they don't speak the language, they have no idea how to get home and the money they are paid is probably all going back to the UNCLE who bought them. What kind of protection do you suggest for the ones who are exploited? |
Come on, it's none of your business what people do with each other consensually. There are probably far far more morally corrupt and depraved hetrosexuals out there in the world. Just because you're gay it doesn't make you evil!!!! If you want prison terms for breaking all supposed MORAL codes then all you adulterors better watch out!!!! |
Hey Wiseguy, Do you have any idea who sells solar panels and batteries in Lagos? |
Phew, I'm glad to hear that so many people see through the illusion. In my opinion these two groups are the leaders of the nation. The politicians becuae they voted themselves in. And the pastors because most people follow what they say. All I ask of the advocates of the Pastors is that you take a long hard look at where the money is going. You all sound like good people so please please please try and make YOUR church ensure that it does some real good with the money that you and those around you give, I want this country to go forwards so my kids can be living in a better place. I'm a bit sad that no one has told me about any of the stuff their churches are doing to help? Suggests nobody knows!?!? |
OK so everybody is giving in the belief that you are therefore going to get more back (I feel the emphasis is a bit too much on cold cash rather than giving a service or time etc) But my initial statement was questioning what is actually being done with he money? Please educate me about all the great works that are being done by the prosperity preaching churches. I want to know more about all the schools they have built for the poor that charge nothing, all the small business loans they have given to develop the local economy, etc etc. Maybe I have it all wrong and it's not just about the flash cars they have and the big houses?? But so far no one has shown me how the churches are actively helping to transform the country. They have the money, where is it being spent. For example WINNERS has built a university, sadly from what I hear it is very expensive and most of the congregation can't afford for their kids to go there!?!? I had the same comment for the politicians and no one has stood up for them, and we're not even giving them the money of our own free will. Please help and enlighten me so that I can become a supporter of prosperity preaching!! Any facts and figures on where the billions are going would shut people like me up more than saying let's not judge the pastor leave it to God, |
