My Bold 9900 has gone black screen of death. Won't start, won't upgrade operating system, basically useless.
Bought it from Slots in Ikea City Mall, they have come back and said that it is my fault, that I dropped it and that it will cost N40,000 to fix the motherboard.
They claim to be an authorised reseller but they are absolutely uselss, have no clue about customer service or warranties.
I used to tell people they were ok till this happened

PoliticsRe: Lagos Gives Okada Riders Fresh Ultimatum by Mongue(m): 10:06am On Aug 18, 2010
How did Lagos survive before Okada? It is only in the last 10 years that they have become popular and life of the roads was actually much better then. It won't be such a hardship if they are at least restricted.

How many people know someone been killed or injured on them? I know one man who was killed on 3rd Mainland bridge, 1 on Ikorodu Road and 1 man who has lost the use of one of his arms. The hosiptals are piled up with accident victims. It doesn't make sense.

Everybody said that the BRT lane on Ikorodu Road would ruin it, that the traffic would be huge and it wouldn't work. It is now very very effective. We have to have some longterm vision. At ojota I am held up in traffic every morning because of the Okada drivers illegally going in the express lane and dropping passengers in the central reservation. Without this there would be no hold up in Ojota in the morning. Enforce the ban and everyone will get to work faster.

Finally okada drivers are crazy! They do themselves no favours

Contracts for his family, multi-billion dollar theft, continued neglect of the people.

He is President of Nigeria, he can't do anything else can he?

Why anyone thinks he is going to do anything good is beyond me, has he ever done anything good up to now? For the PDP to make him VP he must be as corrupt as they come
PoliticsRe: Animals Do Not Turn Into Human Beings: Ok? by Mongue(m): 11:34am On Jul 30, 2008
Ha Ha Ha,

Actually I shouldn't laugh because it's quite scary! I was watching Silverbird news a couple of nights ago and they had probably a 5 minute piece on a bird that turned into a women in Agege! Some poor, probably slightly mentally sick old woman was shown with crowds of people arund her. The crowd where saying stuff like she turned from bird to woman and she comes in the nights as a bird and steals our babies!

It just goes to show the stupidity of a large part of the uneducated masses, and the fact that Silverbird runs it as a main news items amazes me. It's quite scary as imagine how you could manipulate these people by making up some story, people can and probably do die as a result of it.

I wonder when people will stop believeing such rubbish.
TravelRe: Pictures Of The Week (Ugly Side Of Lagos) by Mongue(m): 9:30am On Dec 06, 2007
STANDARD,

This is Lagos, love it or hate it. Every day I drive around and this is what I see. I actually don't find it offensive or shocking, it's just standard life here. There are many places which are even worse than this. And the pics don't actually give you any idea of how BAD the smell can be.

Good luck Fashola, your beautification has a long way to go if you want to get rid of all of this!

I've been told that If I buy a dual LNB and put on my DSTV dish I can get the HITV decoder and have both at once. Although apparently at the moment the satellite is not getting any reception. Does anyone have it working at the moment?

Does anyone now what kind of SPORTS they show in FOX SPORTS?
SportsRe: Great Soccer Fans Get HiTV For Live Matches by Mongue(m): 11:41am On Aug 14, 2007
In my opinion this is a big disaster! I was so gutted to find that I couldn't watch Liverpool start their championship wining season in style!!

And now I 'm being told that I have to buy some new TV, but one big uly pole on the side of my house that will reach way up above my roof, run more cable, pay more money and have even more remote controls in my living room!

But what can you do. In this Lagos it's becoming too risky to go out at night so I have to stay at home and watch football, excpet they've taken that away from me as well,

Anyone think that DSTV will reduce their price? N10,000 for that and another N4000 for (S)HITV is too much!

Is this thread for real or just some big funny ha ha ha joke?

I hope it is the latter although I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't as I caught my warehouse manager reading a book about a man who was in contact with spirit beings on Uranus and Mars and it was non fiction, and he said why not believe it.

I work in the cosmetics business here in Nigeria, so far I have not visited any hair care manufacturers who have been located under the lagoon or in the Atlantic. If anyone on this thread has some info please post it as I would like to visit them as I could be missing out on business.

maybe there are some factories in the gutters or canal?

, please tell me it's a joke, otherwise I'm scared for some peoples sanity, shocked

Help.

I want to invest about N2mill into this First Bank offer. Am I best just going and buying through First Bank or should join up with a stockbroker? I am wary of getting the shares and then having to wait a long long time for a certificate before I can cash in if I so decide.

Also I will have between N3-N5 mill which I want to invest. Can anyone advise a good stockbroker?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.
BusinessCrazy Government Bans - Soap Noodles by Mongue(op): 11:49am On Jun 01, 2007
Sometimes I wonder what the people in power are thinking when they come up with their policies!!!

Almost 4 years ago the Fed Govt made the correct decision in banning the importation of soap. It is not too difficult to make and before a huge percebtage of it was coming from Malaysia and Indonesia.

As a result soap manufacturing has become one of the most fashionable businesses to set up. Many people have invested millions of Naira bringing soap finishing lines into the country and probably thousands of people have gained employment. The products they are making are good quality and often as good as those imported.

Unfortunatley due to the low level of commercial agriculture, the cost of production and transport etc etc the soap base (noodles) that are used to make the soap are very expensive to buy locally and in general because of the lack of good qualiy plants they are poor quality. As a result lots of these new companies have to import from Malaysia.

The government has now banned the importation of soap noodles, 95% of these new companies are now stuffed, they will have no raw material They will not be able to produce, people will lose their jobs, The Big Boys PZ and UNILEVER will dominate,

Can anyone explain why the govt does everything the wrong way roundhuh OK Nigeria has the resources (Palm Oil to create the noodles) but at least make sure there is a local supply before the ban,

Sometimes i wonder why anyone tries to do anything productive in this country when you can have the rug pulled from under you at any stage
TravelRe: The New Yorker Magazine Article On Lagos by Mongue(m): 5:51pm On May 26, 2007
For anyone living here there is absolutely no doubt that Lagos is one of the dirtiest, smelliest major cities in the world. Sadly it is not just a few areas that are rundown but just a very small few that aren't!!

Maybe the reason things keep getting worse is because people try and defend the place!

The reason that Lagos is a great place that people love is because of the people and the energy, that would only be better if the place was cleaned up and some infrastructure was but in place, Next time you're there take a long hard look at the place and imagine what it would be like if you were one of the people whose house was literally surrounded by an acre of rubbish or if everytime you stepped out of your front door you had to cross a metre of raw sewage!!

I see it everyday, but Lagos is so full of rubbish that people literally can't see it anymore.

It's a dump which needs a lot of money and work, face up to that and make it better

For anyone with a nice wedge of dollars to spend looking for some relaxation in Nigeria maybe this is the place for you:

They are advertising a grand commissioning event in todays PUNCH, but I just called the number and spoke to the Manager and he seems to be predicting that they may open part of the hotel in Jul / August and maybe be operating fully by fourth qtr, i imagine some time next year then!

Maybe the fanfare is just a way for Attah to show that he is spending the money on something,

Christianity EtcHow Old Is The World And Did Dinosaurs Exist? by Mongue(op): 9:03am On Nov 18, 2006
I am reading an excellent book called "THE GOD DELUSION" by Richard Dawkins.

It has opened my eyes up to the amazing level of ignorance and misinformation that religions create. So I started asking people here in Nigeria:

1. How old is the World?
2. Have you ever heard of dinosaurs?
3. If yes (only a very small percentage got this far) do you belive they existed?
4. Have you ever heard about evolution?

I was honestly quite shocked at the responses I have heard so far. Admittedly a lot of those I have asked so far have not been well educated people but still, I really didn't believe that anyone could still think the world was only 7000 years old. But even some educated people seem to reject this on the basis of their book

So I open the questions up to all you Nairalanders and am very interested to hear your responses.

If you want after answering you can also say if you believe in a God or not?

TravelRe: I Want To Live In Nigeria by Mongue(m): 9:57am On Nov 11, 2006
The first thing you need to do is take a two week holiday to Nigeria, This will at least give you an insight into the world that you are planning on committing to. It's not easy to have a holiday in Nigeria if you don't know people but it's possible. Go and buy the BRADT - NIGERIA TRAVEL GUIDE. This has lots and lots of useful info in it.

If you come for two weeks and you still think it's for you then you're gonna have to work hard to find someone to employ you. If you have experience in OIL or Telecomms then you have a better chance but it is not easy to find work as an expat unless you have some specifically required skills. Also you don't want to move here without the backing and support of a decent company to help you take care of the little things in life which over here are actually big things. Seun us right, having light, water etc etc are expensive and troublesome.

If you can get everything right Nigeria can be a great place to live and work, not easy by any means but rewarding nevertheless.

Give it a try
Christianity EtcRe: Is God Partial? by Mongue(m): 2:10pm On Aug 21, 2006
Of course if you are a Christian or a Muslim then you have to believe that God is Partial.

Both follow the Old Testament which is all about God chosing one group of people (The Jews) and making them his special, chosen people. That seems pretty partial to me.

You may say that the Quran or New Testament change that, but if God has been partial in the past who can say it's still not the case.

So if you want to believe in that God then a definite YES. He is very very partial, been know to take sides and help one group of people, forgetting or even killing the rest. Imagine how long it took him to get round to contacting Africa!

Car TalkRe: Should Okada Be Banned In Nigeria? by Mongue(m): 10:36am On Aug 04, 2006
OKADA'S IN LAGOS are a problem at the moment and if they do not find some way to regulate and control them they are going to create even more confusion!

The main problem is that no Okada driver has any kind of understanding that there should be rules on the road, they will overtake on the inside / outside / go down roads the wrong way / fail to indicate / carry loads that wouldn't go on a pick up truck etc etc etc. And if you manage to bump one of them even though it is their fault then you are in big troubl

I know too many people who have had accidents, some wrecking their knees and the worst was someone who is now crippled in one arm becuase of a mad okada driver he was sitting behind.

There is no way to ban them, I doubt anyone can find a way to regulate or train them so what (especially Lagos) has to be done is to offer people a more efficient transport system which will naturally stop people using Okada so much. This way you could also have a limit on the number of registered / licenced Okada drvers in each district. Will it ever happen?!?

I appreciate that lots of people depend on Okada, but they are symptomatic of the state of the country, untrained, unruly, uncaring and in a desperate rush to make their money by any means!

Does anyone know what happened to the BTR buses / lanes? By the time a bus arrives I imagine the lines on the road will have faded away!
BusinessRe: Is this Business Idea Worth Starting Up? (Car Dealer Site) by Mongue(m): 4:07pm On Jul 11, 2006
In essence what you need to do is set up a site where car dealers pay to ADVERTISE their cars. You don't make any money from the actual sales but the more they sell the more they will advertise with you.

It's always a difficult business to get started as when you have a dealer willing to advertise he wants to see results but it takes a decent amount of content to get people to come and look at your site. I imagine you would have to start with a few companies by giving them FREE ADVERTISING. This means that you have some conent and you can then find ways to get traffic to come and view it.

Once the traffic increases you can market for more dealers and start with say 1 months free adverts and then start charging by the advert that they place.

I used to work for a online JOB site and we charged by the advert per week. This was in the UK and when i joined the owner was driving a Nissan Micra and living in a 3 bed terraced house. About ten years later when he had sold out he was driving Ferrari's and Aston Martins and buying Ranch in South Africa. He was very lucky but there's money to be made if you have patience and dedication.

Check out www.autotrader.co.uk this started as a magazine but now people mainly search online. Individuals and dealers advertise their cars and the guy who set this one up is the multi-millionaire owner of newly promoted Reading football club!

There are people doing these type of sites but the main problem is lack of relevant and updated content. I look at them once and see Jobs or Houses for sale from 2 years ago and give up! Maybe now that more people are getting online in this country it's a good idea to get started.

TravelRe: Tourism Projects In Nigeria by Mongue(m): 1:35pm On May 25, 2006
Constantin,

I travelled to both countries back in 2001/2002.

Brazil is a country with a huge spread of development and infrastructure and poverty. Rio is a very modern city in general. There are loads of restaurants, bars, clubs to enjoy yourself in, and the same goes for Cape Town. It can be pretty sad when you go along copacabana beach and see all the people sitting in the restaurants as there are always little kids looking through the glass or hanging on the railings begging.

Brazil is a huge place so travelling around can be quite difficult but there are lots of flights / buses that are not too expensive.

Because it is so wet up for Tourism you can find places to stay depending on your budget. Obviously Rio is pricey but Salvador for example was very reasonable. We stayed in a small family run Pousada which gave you a real feel for Brazilians, home cooking etc etc.

Language can be a problem as outside of the cities (and even in them) not so many people speak English, so if you can learn a bit of Portugese it would be a real advantage.

As for crime sure it exists but we had no problems in 2 months in both countries. We even went out to eat in the Favela's of Salvador for some good local cooking and the people were very friendly.

The thing that is so beautiful about Brazil, (and I'm sorry to say is so different from nigeria) is that people have no hang ups or inhibitions. People wander round the streets / Bars in the bikin's / shorts and it's just not an issue for anyone. It creates a real relaxed atmosphere and it's a place where people just enjoy themselves.
TravelRe: Tourism Projects In Nigeria by Mongue(m): 1:55pm On May 23, 2006
Hi Constantin.

Cape Town or Rio is a tough call as they are both so aesthetically beautiful. The way of life is so cool in both with city and beach life going on hand in hand.

I think I would have to go with Rio though. The beaches are so much a part of the city, the lifestyle is so relaxed, also it is a place where you don't stand out whether you are black, white, mixed, asian etc etc. Brazil is an incredible place because you have just about every possible complexion in one big melting pot. Of course maybe it was all the beautiful girls in bikinis everywhere that probably swings it!

Having said that I actually prefered Salvador in Brazil to Rio. It was a lot less commercial, beautiful beaches where you can go at any time and get food / drink / swim. There is a huge Yoruba influence there as well, they have big statues to all the Yoruba Gods and you can even buy AKARAJE, which is akara but with a brazilian twist of hot pepper paste and shrimps! Awesome.

I enjoy telling people straight up that I have absolutely no belief. They will always try and convince you that you are heading down the wrong path and you should go with them to their church but by the end of the debate they have no shred of evidence except their faith!

I like to ask Nigerian Christians why God decided that they were going to be one of the last bunch to hear about him. Bit unfair that they were left not knowing anything till a bunch of British Victorian missionaries came along!

I was very amused to see a poll on satellite TV this morning which was asking the UK public if they cared what the church told them, 65% were saying they weren't interested!
