@ Pumping777, upward, Mr. Risky, RoughCut, yodiyokun, Easimoni, Wanaj0, W. Wendy, Aktopgun (MIA) and other gurus and guguru's

Hey guys I need your help here, I am undecided on what to buy. I have tons of cash with my broker for more than 2 weeks now, but still don’t know what to buy.

I guess it’s my newly acquired knowledge that is disturbing me, previously to my new knowledge on Nairaland I just jump into stocks without reading fundamentals or do any technical analysis; I just enter into stocks based on my own personal sentiments.
I was the one that bought Afroil and Capoil (based on the fact that the names carries OIL) I was able to made more than 3000% each on the stocks.

Nowadays I have to check and double check before I make a move; I guess ignorance sometimes do have its positive side.

Here under are the stocks I am contemplating to enter;
Livestock,
Tourist and Co,
G. Cappa
These are the one I was planning to increase my takes in;
Unic,
Union Homes,
Dunlop

So gurus (my teachers) and guguru’s (my class mates) what is your opinion on this my dilemma

My brother thanks for your sincerity and your earnest desire to learn the trade in the proper way.  My perspectives of the market are these:

1.  The banking sector is silent now, its time is coming and would likely start around June this year.  And when it starts, no going back because THEY DELIVER.  The PATs and Increasing turnovers are there to testify and their growth is not in doubt.

2. There are turn around companies like Dunlop, Livestock Feeds, Niwicable, Beta Glass and C& I Leasing and Deap Cap.  These companies have a future based on what I know about them today.  If you join the party with good entry now, in the next 9months to 12 months you will surely laugh.  The turn around here may include ones that recently received FDI to enrich their prospects.

3.  Some insurance companies that are making waves now are living under their shadows.  They will have no good result to support their POPULARITY.  By the time the chips are down midway into this year, we shall see.

4.  The petroleum stocks are also making waves. Apart from OandO that has tangible news to support its claims, and perhaps Eterna Oil which cards have not been placed on table yet, I do not know how others will live up to their claims.

For me, if I am in your shoes, I will buy the following stocks with a view that in the next 12 months I will reap.  UNFORTUNATELY I do not see the capital market as a short term investment.  I am a thorough medium term player and it works miracles for me.  When I say medium term, I mean anything between 13 months and 36 months.

My stock picks for today are:

Oceanic Bank
First Bank (Big things are coming)
UBA
G T Bank
Diamond Bank
Bank PHB
Zenith Bank

Others are:

7Up (Good income stock)
Beta Glass
Nigerian Breweries
Nigerian German Chemicals
RT Briscoe
Japaul Oil
C & I Leasing

Turn Around Companies
Dunlop
Livestock
Niwicable
A G Leventis
ABC Transport

Insurance Coys
Crusader
Staco
Law Union and Rocks

All the stocks above, at their present prices, I will hardly go for them EXCEPT, the banking stocks excluding GT Bank.  I hope I have not accidentally disclosed my portfolio here.  With the above stocks I sleep well at night and don't bother about daily price fluctuation.

I believe Napoleon already gave the go ahead. I have no say in this myself.

@Pumping777 / @ Yodi

What exactly is pushing AG Leventis, is it the fact that the result will be out this March or because of the Cummins connection? That stock has exhibited so much energy lately. Am I regretting? The largest loot I will be making on NSE ever, but for now it is still on paper, though, any misstep now I will be the first to use my parachute. Don't think I am interested in 11k DIFIDENT grin grin grin grin grin grin as my people would say. Yodi can you hold brief for WindyWendy on this?

The way this market is going, by mid-year, when the BEAR will make its triumphant entry, the biggest problem before Yar Adua may be increasing the number of Psychiatrist Hospital in Nigeria!!  It sounds funny, but I know what I am talking about.  Watch Lennards, because the nominal price is "small" or "cheap" to use their language, everyone is rushing it.  With all these shoes from Dubai, how many shoes does Lennards if they still exist sell in a month.  This company has not released result since Babangida regime, and now it is hot cake.

After buying such stocks and anyone complains, I just advise that s/he should buy NIGERIAN ROPES.  Hope you know what rope is used for when one is utterly frustrated.

Why would someone who does not know even the financial year of any stock not to mention shares outstanding and all that, want to trade on stocks!  Many will begin to catch witch very soon, and then family problem etc etc etc.

Japaul needs to make more than 500% PAT over last year to just any price above N10.  At current earnings, its fair price is N7. or less.

The NSE BEAR has a good cleaner, all the prices written by the BULL will be wiped out and corrrected very soon.

I think though that its good if you can guarantee that the price gain post TS will be worth it. If we are talking like 120% post TS like COSTAIN or something then thats fine waiting the 2-3mths, but if we are talking 25% gain, it just might not be worth it.

@RoughCut, I'm even thinking of getting some JaPaul which I think might still climb due to sentiments. What do u think?

Many have bought stocks and waited for a whole year to get 15% cap appreciation! The important thing is that the stock has its fundamentals and a future.

Blueband,
i think i will go with your stategy, i tried joining the CICO guru but my stockbroker is too slow for that.
what are the stocks that might be doing po soon, i want to go back to my long term. once i sell a stock it starts rising. i sold my 100kg of vitafoam because the dividen was rubbish at 10:30  see what it is noe in 1 week plus.
abeg give me stocks to buy now positioning for right issues

Only few things are as painful as this, ACL.  It has happened to me several times.  It would look like they were watching me to sell.  I sold my 150,000 units of Japaul at 7.93 post TS and the following two days, it was on BID till it rose to where it is now.  Same thing with my C & I Leasing with the other yeye brokers, 100,000 units at N9.60 and it went on bid the following day and today it is N13 plus, and yet I have not received the money cry  Sold my STACO, 100,000 at N4.50 last month and before the end of that week it started gaining maximum points until it got to N6 plus.  I had held it for 4 months without any substantial price movement.  At a point I thought I was under a spell.  I discharged my NGC at N26 last two weeks, what is the price today?  N30 plus

C & I LEASING CO. PLC

The more i keep digging the more i like what i'm finding out about C and I Leasing. They enjoy a virtual monopoly in the leasing space they are the only leasing company listed on the NSE. They have just acquired a majority stake in the most profitable and second biggest leasing company in Ghana.

They have diversified their business operations to include leasing mini containers to Esso Nigeria Ltd and still looking for more clients.
They have also acquired their own vessels which they have leased to three multinational oil exploration companies (they have a more diversified operational base compared with Japaul Oil (still trying to work out the difference between these two).

Apparently they also own the Hertz car rental franchise and they had a massive capital injection of about N1.3B sometime last year so things are looking up for this company

The above was written by Roughcut some time last year on this thread, and then I got the inspiration to pile up C & I Leasing.  Today I am smiling.  WindyWendy wrote the same on A G Leventis some time last year too, and I started piling the stock, today too I am smiling.  YOU GUYS ARE SIMPLY INVALUABLE.
Investment / Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by MrRisky: 10:21pm On Feb 27, 2008
windywendy:

I don't claim to be a cico expert but here's my take.

There's definitely a case for long-term investing, but one has to pick such stocks very carefully. For instance, I bought AG Leventis at N3.45 around September 26 last year. At today's price, the stock has done over 340% gross in just 5months (i'm using gross because commission charges vary with different people). With cico, one would have to do about 35% per month compounded (you do the math, i no fit explain am for yinglish language) to get that type of return. Is this possible? In a bull market, maybe, but it's a tall order however you look at it. Having said that though, there are some other stocks that if one had bought and held for the same timeframe as that of the AG leventis example above, the returns today would be almost nothing to write home about. IBTC comes to mind. So the trick is picking the right stocks and holding for the right length of time. And that's the reason I generally prefer to buy and hold turnaround stocks, as long term returns on those ones generally far outweigh the returns you'll get from cico-ing, even when compounded. For most other stocks, I trade -- especially when the market is bullish. My opinion though, plus all the caveat types apply  cheesy oh,and PPs are exempted because those ones usually come at give-away prices (you know, buy-1-get-5-free type thingy  grin)

Yes, WindyWendy.  For stocks that, for me, holds some future, like newly turned around ones, I am not for CICO.  I RIRO only when I have no plans to hold that stock and just capitalising on market sentiments.  I give you an example.  Last Monday 18th I bought 100,000 units of AIICO at N6.07 when I read that the BID was still very high.  I offloaded at N7.40 yesterday with a net income of N115,000 in ONE WEEK. It sounds sweet.  But since June last year I bought Dangote Sugar at N39.99.  Since then only the quarterly peppermint dividend of 40k consolation has kept me going along with news of better things to come which of course have not come as least as at today!  Hence I agree with you Wendy.  Picking stocks for the long term is not an idle game, one has to be extremely careful.

My Long Term stocks right now are:

C & I Leasing
First Bank
Diamond Bank
A G Leventis
Dunlop
NASCON
BETA GLASS (Hope there will be better in glass soon grin  Wind of Bonus cheesy)
G T Bank
Zenith Bank
Oceanic Bank
Live Stock Feed

You see that majority here is turn around or just completed PO which I believe will translate to better things in the nearest future.

I did all forms of CICO last year and lost out on wonderful opportunities and benefits.  Sold my 50,000 units of Intercontinental at N27.90 which I bought at N24.  If I had not sold it, the returns as at today price of N44 would have been gargantuan grin  Hence I am watching to catch NIWI at the first bus stop tomorrow or Friday.  I am ready to wait it out at least for the next 2 years until they prove me wrong.

This THREAD is most entertaining in addition to the prospect of making dohs, hence people are kind of attracted to CICO.  It has its own obvious DISADVANTAGES as you must LIVE on information, and RELIABLE information at that, otherwise, you are sure to have WAPCO injury.  Yes, at times when you compare the returns in addition to the labour, you would find that there is nothing to write HOUSE about grin
