pumping777: @Pumping777, nawaooooo your statement no de complete againooooo. You say "Better stocks dey for NSE in my own opinion that meet my objectives." As I de read de go, the next thing I saw was full stop So which stocks at present meet those your objectives. I know every body will like this my question. I have one LOUD policy, if I must buy a stock whether for CICO or CICOCELL, it must meet my required list of fundamentals. So when I buy, I give myself One Year, if any good thing happen before that period, I AM NOT ALLERGIC to profit But to buy stock and expect the price to run by the following day and when it refuses, I begin to develop malaria or typhoid, I am not for that at all. My personal experience has proved that if anyone buys any stock with good fundamentals, no matter how NSE disbehave, within one year, you must reap something. So Pumping777, what are those stocks that meet your objectives right now. I know GURUs are very cautious now. Some even use Japanese Whatever language you all gurus use, even speaking in tongues, we de de read una lips |

pumping777: On a more serious note Pumping777, 257,000,000m units of FBN at over N14,000,000,000 is no joke at all. Could that be an institutional investor who was disappointed in the just concluded PO Do you know that FBN today accounted for some 51% of the whole market sale. This ELEPHANT BULLDOZER IS TOO TEMPTING. I am praying against the temptation as I just bought 20k units only last two weeks at 41.25k See me see profit and yet I am afaid. Abeg it is good to be afraiding. I no de SELL Diamond too no wan here, sales of over N1,000,000,000!!!!! May be the guy planned it. Even UBA is not left out. Sales on UBA, GTB, Oceanic, Zenith and FIRST BANK amounts to over N19bn in one day. What does the future hold?? |

Investment / Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by MrRisky: 11:29pm On Feb 10, 2008 |
If I were to give BUY MANDATE to my brokers this week, I would go for the following stocks: Beta Glass - Short - Medium Term NASCON - Growth Stock ( I will explain) First Alluminium - Good result expected 7 Up - Will come up strong - Medium/Long term buy UBA - Relatively cheap at current price International Energy Insurance - May move still further Wapco - If the BONUS rumour gets stronger FlourMills - Still have potentials Eterna oil - Still have rooms based on happenings in the oil realm For insurance companies, my opinion is that no one should expect the prices to drop far lower than we have seen. They would likely begin to maintain some resistance around the N5 range. JUST MY OPINION, though. What is driving the insurance stocks is not necessarily their expected results, but the happenings in that industry. If you have flare for penny stocks, some insurance companies still have the potentials. I particularly have my soft spots for STACO, Mbenefit, Law Union and Rocks, Crusader and Unic. Wapic will need to justify its price in the days of reality. Technicalists may now need to raise the bar of their PEs for insurance stocks to 40 - 50. Easimoni, abeg raise the bar, . That said, let me speak on NASCON. NASCON was a moribond company for years until it was injected with life by Dangote only recently, and the news pushed the stock price from 34kobo last year to close if not more than N30. Dangote was asked to offload some of his portfolio of NASCON and it came at N22. A lot of people bought thinking there was some magic in there especially with the name DANGOTE linked to it, and also that they too had been scouting for the stock at a lower price band. Shortly after the deal, the price shot up to about N27 and then did a Boeing nosediving to even N15 in less than a month! Don't ask me how short termers felt. Some still express their frustration up till now. But what is the true picture. NASCON which had been making huge losses in the past before DANGOTE went into it returned a six month PAT of some N516m, though 3rd quarter PAT and END OF YEAR PAT are still being expected. If you ask me, the company is on the path to success, what some might be disappointed with is the price not getting to even the N22 within this short term period. A company rising from the dust of huge losses to profitability within a year is to me a GREAT COMPANY WITH GREAT POTENTIALS. I have told myself, I will grow with NASCON. And so be it. With the release of subsequent results the price is going to rise, and rise it will be. I have given this background to substantiate the point that NASCON for me is a growth stock, and anyone thinking of long term should consider it. Also that Uncle Dangote is a generous biz man, and will pay dividend as business permits. NASCON has only 2.2bn outstanding shares, less than 50% O/S of MOST INSURANCE COMPANIES. ON FLAKY, @Pumping thanks for being your mature self. As for others, please let's learn to mediate in matters rather than stoking the fire, it will lead to no where. Flaky it was nice you apologized. One thing we must learn, though, is that Nairaland has been one place most people are able to let off their steam over the inefficiencies in the system. If some of us get to know the calibre of people that read this thread, we can better appreciate what we all are benefitting. The culture of employing patronizing terms in addressing the inefficiencies inthe system will have to die, but not an instant death but a gradual one, and the killer will be the effectiveness of the regulators and the POWER OF KNOWLEDGE! Recently, in addition to my normal commission, I had to pay money into my account officer's personal account as a gift (for he goes to the floor) so he can be there to EXPEDITE my buy/sell orders. You may think I am mad, believe me, the easiest people to send one to the psychatrist units in any hospital are BROKERS! Recently, my broker bought Afribank at N26.50. I USED ALL THE NOBLE NAMES I CAN RECALL TO BEG HIM TO REMOVE THE STOCK worth some N1.1m from my account. He eventually did, but at N26.30, so who pays for the LOSS?? Remember, stock trading is not the main work of most people. If you had to FIGHT THE BATTLE straight ahead without applying some caution and wisdom, you may end up endangering yourself. So most time, you had to BEG and plead, and be friendly before the right thing can be done. Or you take him to the court!!! Unlike in developed land, when someone in Naija threatens you "I will call the police". He truly has not said anything. Of what use is that?? Will the police make any difference. Assuming the police comes and you make him your customer Who loses? Who gains Absence of justice system is the BANE of our Naija society, hence service delivery is the way it is, hence we have to show even though a modicum of appreciation for those that are even responding to our constructive criticism. GOOD NIGHT AND WELCOME TO ANOTHER BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISH WEEK ON THE NSE! |

Many stocks traded at the highest price for the day and a handful closed with maximum price appreciation of 5%; this led to a further 220 basis points rise of the NSE All-Share Index. Insurance stocks were generally unavailable as the hold-back from investors and speculators continued. As a result of this, most insurance stocks traded less volumes than in recent sessions. Today, all other insurance stocks booked about 5% appreciation except for Crusader Insurance, Niger Insurance and Prestige Insurance. With the expectation of more price gains, there appears to be no end in sight for the bull run. The banking sector also enjoying the market trend, saw First Bank close with unsatisfied bids at the highest price possible for the day, while a market maker prevented Union Bank from sliding below the N45 mark, closing on bid a little above this price. GTB went up by 1.6% despite the fact that huge volumes were traded. Zenith Bank, Afribank and FCMB were the only price losers in the sector shedding 1.9%, 0.8% and 0.5% respectively. Japaul Oil traded for most part of the session at the maximum price for the day but as offers came in unabated, the spread dropped by 1.8%. C&I Leasing also recorded a trading pattern similar to that of Japaul Oil but closed on a flat note. Transcorp, also enjoying a good run from speculative interests, topped the list of most traded stocks with an excess of 110 million units exchanging hands and this did not prevent it from closing with unfilled bids at maximum price. W t th k t t i b lli h f th t f th k The NSE All-Share Index was up by 43 basis points today, closing at 62,516.07 as against 59,125.48 the previous week. However, the gains seen during the week have started to thin out as speculators and investors attempt to lock-in profits. First Bank recorded a further 5% increase today, when a market maker cleared offers with a large bid at maximum price. It closed with an excess of 30 million units in unsatisfied bids. The impressive half year result released by Fidelity Bank buoyed its price by 5% to close with unfilled bids. Market forces favored FCMB and Afribank as they recorded 2.5% and 2.7% price appreciations respectively. On the flip side, seven banks were on the losers' chat, with Diamond Bank and Bank PHB shedding approximately 4% in share value. The outlook for the banking sector in the coming week is neutral. Profit-taking continued for the second day running in the insurance sector. There were more declines than advances, and a handful of stocks in this sector shed about 5%. Continental Reinsurance and Linkage Assurance finished the week unscathed, gaining 5% daily throughout the week. Possible re-entries are expected to give a boost to stocks in the sector in the coming week. In other sectors, Japaul closed the week with a further 5% gain to return over 20 % for the week. It is likely that the stock will see profit-taking mid week. Although trading at maximum price for the better part of today’s session, C &I Leasing still had a marginal trimming of its gain to a 4.8% appreciation. Afroil enjoyed price appreciation throughout the week on the heels of non-availability of supply and a possible slide is expected of Transcorp in coming sessions as an onslaught of supply at the tail end of today’s session suggest a possible release of offers early next week. |

kevyngbash: My brother thanks for your question. Unfortunately, I am not in a position right now to comment on anything PO. My doctors are still treating me from the accident I sustained on the FBN PO and likely another surgery emanating from the ACCESS PO, as the one from JAPAUL is still pending! If PO means anything to me now it either stands for POST OFFICE or POLICE Only yesterday since MAY, I managed to pay in the FBN RETURNED MONEY without interest not even the 5% annualized! That said, no matter how much of a neophyte we might be on this stock biz, there are some very simple questions I feel any investor should want to find answers to: 1) What is the position of this company in its industry? 2) How have been their performance? 3) What are their projections and focus? 4) Can I grow with them? And how long? 5) What is my investment objective? 6) What are my expectations 7) If I fail will I reasonably blame myself? I would rather you answer those questions concerning Springbank; then you might be able to take a PRUDENT INVESTMENT DECISION. I have deliberately avoided spelling investment decisions for anyone. I see that it is not helpful to any individual. Anyone who tries to spoonfeed you is ACTUALLY not helping you. Answer your own internal questions, make your mistakes if at all, and you will learn. Wish you all the best. |

RoughCut: Hi Roughcut, the question could be asked. IN AN EMERGING MARKET SUCH AS NIGERIA'S, WHICH IS MORE BENEFICIAL? BEING AN INVESTOR OR A SPECULATOR? For me in an emerging market such as the NSE, being an INVESTOR will be more beneficial than being a SPECULATOR, as most of the stocks on the NSE still hold great potentials than are found in some stable markets. This is open to debate though, but a hypothetical situation can save the day! But some would be wise to be both, which I AM. Once my stocks makes more than 75% gains I must take profit whether or not the initial game plan was a long term. This is a excerpt from the Thisday article. DEBATABLE, though When you buy shares of a company during any of their Public Offers, which may be Initial Public Offer(IPO) or secondary Public Offer, you are usually sent a certificate which stands as a proof that what is stated therein is true. A certificate is a document,in this case ,a financial document stating how many shares an individual or company owns as equity in another company. If you had bought shares in the last Public Offer of Intercontinental Bank PLC in 2006,you may have received a rectangular hard-paper document in which your name and address are typed therein, together with the units of shares of that company you bought. That certificate also bears the signature of the secretary of the company and also the official number and account numbers of yourself at that company’s registrar. If you are yet to receive your certificates from Intercontinental Bank PLC,you may have received from Oceanic Bank International PLC,or Transcorp Nigeria PLC or a dozen of other companies that recently offered their shares for sale during IPOs.Ownership of shares in a company entitles you to reap part of the profits of that company, usually once yearly,as dividends,or extra stocks as stock dividends(during stock splits or bonus offers). You can also participate at Annual General Meetings and Extra-Ordinary General Meetings of these companies,as a result of your shareholder status. So your share certificates your shareholder status should never be joked with. In fact, you can litigate a company or question its mismanagement based on your shareholder status. One of these strategies is to “Sell Into Strength”.A famous expression in Wall Street is that”No one ever went broke taking a profit”.So making profits in the stock market is the key to wealth. You cannot afford to lose. You must have also read Robert Kiyosaki saying that “Average investors do not make money. While he may not necessarily lose money, he fail to make money”. And that was why his Rich Dad’s advice for him to the average investor was “Don’t be average!”. Selling into strength means anytime your stock makes a major move on the upside(i.e increases in price),you should sell a portion of your holdings. For instance if you own 500 shares of Zenith International bank PLC and you make big gains, sell 100 shares each time it appreciates 10%.This enables you to reduce risks and simultaneously sell those stocks at higher prices.Well, selling these shares quickly will be determined by many factors, the most important of which is having the shares already credited to a CSCS(Central Securities Clearing System) account. That forms the core of our discussion: why postal delays in mailing out certificates and the non-verification of these certificates early(if received by investors) impedes their efforts to sell into strength. You will also have read the last time that if you did not make up to 20% profit in your sale transactions, you were not really an investor, although you will factor in your buy and sale commissions. In selling into strength, you become a speculator which is much more important than an investor.William O’Neill took time in his book, “How To Make Money In Stocks” to differentiate the words “investor” and “speculator”.It will be advantageous for you to read it yourself, “Are you a speculator or an investor”,he asks.He continues that: “When you think of the word ‘speculator’,you might think of someone who takes big risks, gambling on the future success of a stock.Conversely, when you think of the word “investor”,you might think of someone who approaches the stock market in a sensible and rational manner. According to these conventional definitions, you might think it’s smarter to be an “investor”. But Baruch, a notable stockbroker defines “speculator” as follows: “The Word “speculator” comes from the Latin “speculari” which means to spy and observe. A speculator, therefore, is a person who observes and acts before the future occurs.” This is precisely what every shareholder or prospective shareholder should be doing. You should watch the market and individual stocks to analyse what they are doing now,and then act upon that information.Another stock market guru,Jesse Livermore defined “investor” as big time “gamblers”. He maintains that they make a bet, stay with it,and if it goes wrong, they lose it all. So “investing”in the strictest sense of the word is not the best way to approach the stock market. “Speculation” is! That is why there is no such thing as long-term investment once a stock drops into the loss column and you’re down 8% below your cost(William’s stop-loss percentage). Worry when your stocks goes down in price! Some “investors” are not worried that their stocks are losing value. They are consoled by the dividends and bonuses which they anticipate or had already gained from these companies. They think they will continue to receive this dividends from these companies but that is not true.If you are in this category, you should rethink this idea and belief and consider changing them. They are dangerous! Let’s take an example of a stock that that goes down 55% in price and pays a dividend of 10%.Would it be logical to retain that stock knowing that a 55% loss plus a 10% dividend gain equals a catastrophic net loss of 45%?So wake up and act smart.Develop precise rules and hard-nosed selling disciplines and you’ll gain a major advantage. Have you ever bought shares in an ipo or po? If you answered yes to that question, chances are that you may not have received your share certificates. If this applies, try and get in touch with the registrar of that company,or failing the company itself. The company should at least be able to tell you who its registrar is.If you have received your share certificates, congratulations! You are one of the fortunate Nigerians who will not be bedeviled by the vagaries of postal delays.Well act quickly to sell your shares into strength.I know most of the shares sold as IPOs have made major price gains, while the shareholders were yet to receive their certificates. For instance,Dangote Sugar Refinery PLC which sold for N18 per share now sells for N39;Zenith Bank PLC which sold shares at PO for N16.90 now sells for N44;Oceanic Bank International PLC which sold its PO at N16.50 now sells for N31;Intercontinental Bank which sold at N13.50 now sells for N23;though Transcorp PLC which sold for N7.50 now sells much below at N2.71, recently rose to N9.71 before it plunged.Other stocks which had made great gains include: First Bank of Nigeria Plc which sold at N33 later sol at N39,though it attained a price of N54;United Bank for Africa(UBA) PLC which sold for N34 now sells for N54;Mutual Benefits Assurance PLC which sold at N0.60 now sells for N3.03;Stnadard Alliance Insurance which sold for N1.10 now sells for well over N4.You can imagine how dramatic some of these increases are. Some investors who had received their certificates have sold into strength, but those who are yet to take advantage of this strategy had witnessed their stock fall back in price after a high price attainment. |

Where do you think the price of Sterling Bank would be now that it's planning to come to the capital market, as its propopsed merger with Ecobank has hit the rocks? Just wondering - its a Penny banking stock, remember! |

Salvage: My brother, may be you misunderstood me. I didn't say you might not be able to make some gains. I am simply saying that it is RISKY because its numeric fundamentals (its figures) do not support its present price. What reason did your broker give for recommending it? If its because people are making money from it, that is simply HYPE. Hype is a sword with two sharp edges, survival depends on which side it swings. If it swings to the left, then mourners may be seen returning from the cemetary, but if it swings to the RIGHT, it is jubilation the like that is seen in a wedding reception I made huge money today from insurance shares which I bought last year. At their current prices, I would not dare buy any because it wouldn't fit my risk appetite even though my name is RISKY. Once the 2008 budget funds are released, some may find their way into the secondary market, more so now that the POs that are coming are not the capital intensive type coupled with the fact that many tested hands on the NSE (like Wanajo, Pumping777, WindyWendy, Madam Yodi, Aktopgun, easimoni, and of course BABAof2 ) have all been immunised against POs/IPOs, the BULL run in the NSE is just beginning. This year will dwarf whatever 2007 has recorded. I make bold to say this, except, except, there is a major political earthquake measuring more than 8 on the Ritcher scale, which I do not foresee. So get your money ready, and if you must take added risk, take the one that would not require increasing the number of doctors around you Some stocks which are silent might do a bonus this year, and you can imagine what effect that would have on their prices. I see Betaglass doing a bonus this year, and who knows AG Leventis might follow, and the almighty WAPCO. There are great opportunities ahead both in the short and medium term. SAVE ENOUGH MONEY, opportunities will always emerge, if not weekly, fortnightly. Total 9 MONTH PAT of Linkassure is not even near N200m with unknown staggering figure as outstanding shares and yet its price is more than N5. A company just robbing off the dust from losses of its past financial year |

emotimi: My problem with the POs is not even with the companies floating them but with the SYSTEMLESS SYSTEM. For instance why EXTEND THE DATE OF A PO when it is clear it will be oversubscribed. If they say they didn't know it would be oversubscribed, that substantiates my point that the system as it is is SYSTEMLESS. FBN extended, ACCESS extended, even DANGOTRAP extended etc etc etc. And now they are paying CENTURIANISED INTEREST of N2.50 per N1m returned TOOO BAAAAAAAD TOOOO SAD. |

wanaj0: You are right Wanajo on the great potentials in the insurance industry. It is the outworking of the game that is my concern. What innovative packages have they shun out? How much have they poised to take advantage of the liberal government policies in their favour. Some truly working hard. Top on my list is the Unic you mentioned in the area of healthcare insurance, Staco is another great upcoming insurance firm, also with Continental Re. But let them spread their cards down by midyear before they can declare their holiness. Yes, Mutual Benefit too is going the way of the mortgages. For the long term that is one insurance firm that will take its own among its ranks. The future is bright no doubt, but how poised are they to take advantage of it, my worries - and sincere worries actually. Well ride it on if you have entered, and make sure you took your seat near the exit door. Unless you are waiting for 3k dividend for a stock of N6 plus |

wanaj0: You have said it all Wanajo, And again what is driving the insurance stock prices?? Recapitalization? Which recapitalization?? Where are the innovative market strategies in that sector? Is it the N333m 3rd quarter PAT of NEM with over 5bn outstanding shares that is driving the price. Very soon there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. In a BULL market, if the name of SAVANNAH BANK were to be on the list of quoted companies its shares would still be on BID, not minding the army of lizards crawling in their former branches across the nation. Nothing kills faster than Hype, The way fundamentals have been thrown over board, hope cardiac arrest will not arrest some unwary investors . NOT MY PRAYER ANY WAY. |
