justwise: Stop reading other people's interview and rehearsing it, know your course, the university you applied to and the reason you chose that course.

There is nothing wrong in applying for one university alone, just explain why you chose that university, what attracted you to that university? Their academic history in regards to your course? Course content and cost? Facilities?

When people are asked what they intend to do with their degree a lot of people start by saying.....coming back to my country..bla bla bla..that is one of the over-flogged explanation ever, look for another reason.
Oga Justwise where u dey since.. @Justwise wetin we do u wey u jst abandon your boys for here.. It's been a long time bro. Hello nairalanders, I have a problem, I registered for the November 3rd SAT in Lagos. And my exam comes up in 4 days time and i have not received my admission ticket.
I just don't know what to do. I called the office where I registered but the man keeps telling me stories and made me waste a lot of money.
I tried printing out my admission ticket online through my collegeboard account but the page keeps taking me back to "update my Profile" and it keeps telling me invalid email address. And this was the same email address I used in registering for the SAT. Please help because I'm confused, I won't be allowed to take the SAT if I don't provide the admission ticket. And I have been practicing for the SAT for more than 7 months nw. The devil is a liar, all my efforts won't just go in vain like that. Pls who is having the same similar situation and who can help me out here.. Please I need advise and solutions.. Thanks.

imperiouxx: (S)He is your sponsor, (s)he should be able to assist till you succeed. Asking for bank statement doesn't cost a thing. Unless the school agrees you can send scanner, else, you'll have to get 5 statements. I collected 4 original statements and 8 original transcripts(including those I didn't bother to send after I got the first admission) and got 2 admissions.
@Imperiouxx, I intend telling him about it after my SAT exam next week. I will head to his office and explain everything to my sponsor. I try to get 5 original Bank statements from him. I will have a letter and have it addressed to whom it may concern.. The worst that can happen is for me to have the Bank statement scanned out and print it and send it to the school. After all I hv tried. I should even be happy my sponsor released a bank statement than being greedy and looking for 5 Bank statements. If the school want to verify let them call the Bank and they will see dt every thing is NOT fake they will know it is REAL.. My sponsor is the Full owner of the account. Thanks @Oga imperiouxx, @Kpolli, @Ferdii for your suggestions.. I nw have so much candid information from you guys. I will yield your suggestions..

eduson002: I am in same situation as u.I intend scanning and reprinting.
@Eduson002, please make sure you are not on the wrong path. Contact your school and ask if they accept scanned document. Because I will have prefered dt method of yours.. It very easy dt way. But most schools know hw to detect scanned documents and they don't accept it. Let me knw if they accept scanned documents so I cud easily do the same for mine. By the way r u going for undergraduate studies?

imperiouxx: @mr swagger,

Means they won't pronounce you admitted even if you were until they see you bank statement.
@Oga imperiouxx, so dis means I have to send my Bank statements to them. But is it possible for a Bank to issue 5 Bank statements because I intend applying to 5 schools and sending them the Bank statement at once.. is dis going to be possible?. They even want the original Bank statement and a letter from the Bank. I'm kind of confused. I jst don't knw wht to tell my sponsor.. Because it seems awkward, asking for a Bank statement when I'v nt even gotten any admission. Or has anyone in house encountered a similar problem like me here.. Pls help.. I need advice and suggestions

imperiouxx: Yea, after admission before issuing I-20. If I were you, I will use a stone to kill 5 birds by sending everything during submission of my documents for admission so that the I-20 gets to me fast.
@Oga Imperiouxx, dis is the mail I got from one of the schools I intend applying for admission.. See wht dey said in their mail.

Dear Kelly,

Again, please carefully read the requirements in the link I sent you earlier. SATs are not required, but international students are not admitted or issued documents without financial and bank statements. Please let me know if you have more questions.

Warm Regards,

They need Bank statements as proof of financial eligibility for admission purposes.. Na wa ooo. I jst don't knw wht I will tell my daddy's friend nw. He is the one sponsoring me.. I jst hope he issues me dis Bank statement. It will have been more sensible if I was to issue my Bank statement for getting I-20..

imperiouxx: The first place you get grant is in public schools because they are government funded schools. In other words, public schools offer affordable tuition, some tuition waiver and all give grants from government. Most private institutions are also good but more expensive (since they try to maximize their profits) just like in Nigeria.

@mr. Swagg,

I'm talking in general. About bank statement, yea all schools request for that. They need it to be sure you/sponsor got fund in bank for your studies. So that you don't come and depend on public fund and that's the government rule for schools.

@imperiouxx I appreciate your comment. I understand wht u said, but wht I'm asking is that do schools request for this Bank statement before you apply for admission or AFTER you have been ADMITTED and ready to get the I-20....

Euma: @Olami1224

Google search schools that offer your chosen course. Check their requirements. Then shortlist a number of schools that are closer to your area of study & availability of financial aids/scholarships/grants or any other form of waivers, check school's rankings (it mustn't be an ivy league school) also consider school's location, cost of living, weather conditions.
Meet all application deadlines, take the standardized tests.
When you are accepted into the school, you'll be requested to submit some financial documents, proof that student has financial support with or without assistance from the school. when you meet all requirements, an I-20 form(Admission letter) will be mailed to you.
Pay a SEVIS fee at any ECOBank in Cotonou or Seme border or If you have anyone in the states, the person can pay online for you. NB: You'll need the receipt for your interview so, be mindful.
Visit the US embassy website to fill an onlne application DS-160 form. i think it varies depending on the type of visa you are applying for.(not certain)
Visit any GTBank to pay a visa application fee. You'll be issued an MRV receipt(whatever its called)lol
With all these things done, visit the usembassy website and schedule a visa interview appointment. You should know the rest.

@House Anyone can add more tips to this. If I'm missing out some details.

To all the Spring'13 students, I wish you all God's grace as you prepare. Amen!
@Euma, I appreciate your comment. some schools indicate on their website for the items to be submitted for admission, they say you show proof of financial abiltity when applying for admission. Is it mandatory for us to show bank statement to get admission. Because this doesn't make sense. My Daddy's friend who is sponsoring is only willing to show his Bank statement after I have gotten admission and to get 1-20..
Or wht do u think..

bigfrancis21: I'll suggest some good universities for you:
1) University of Tennessee.
2) University of Alabama.
3) University of Illinois.
4) University of Connecticut.
These universities offer full tuition waivers (you wouldn't have to pay tuition) if you're awarded a scholarship (called fellowship at graduate level) or graduate assistantship. They are also good academically.
My own two coins.
Thanks alot @Bigfrancis, I appreciate your kind gesture. After during my research I discovered that most schools in USA give assistanship or grants to graduate students. Those going for masters... But I intend going for undergraduate for fall 2013... Are these schools you listed giving funding or grants to undergraduates?

masterprad: What Should You Do In Case of a 214b Visa Denial?

If you were refused a visa under section 214(b), you may reapply. When you do, you will have to show further evidence of your ties or how your circumstances have changed since the time of the original application.

First, carefully review your situation and realistically evaluate your ties. You may want to write down on paper an outline of what qualifying ties you think you have that may not have been properly evaluated at the time of your interview with the consular officer. Also, you should review any documents that were submitted for the consul to consider, and look at what documents could have been presented that weren’t.

It may help to answer the following questions before reapplying:
Did you explain your situation accurately?
Did the consular officer overlook something?
Is there any additional information you can present to establish your residence and strong ties abroad?
The guy should have take the Gre or Gmat, I guess his chances would have been high. He didn't convince the VO enough that he was serious and going for masters. Pls let him try to do Gre.. And be prepared for the interview.. No worries and fears.. God Rules...

Hello guys, pls I need your help on this, I graduated from high school in 2007 and I intend applying for undergraduate studies for fall 2013 resumption to washington university st louis. After filling in my application through the common application website I was shocked when I received this email from them;

Dear Kelly,
Thank you for your recent application to Washington University. Because you have been out of high school for several years now, it is difficult for us to accurately evaluate your academic record.

We recommend that you attend a community college as a part-time or full-time student for at least a year to re-establish your academic record and to explore classes that may be of interest to you. Once you have established a current record, you may then apply to the University as a transfer student to complete your studies.

I refuse to take this as an insult, but is it that I am not qualified to study at university or what. Based on what I have learnt so much on nairaland, it is not advisable to apply to a community college, like u guys said because of the VO. Pls help on this. I need your advise. Do u think other universities will accept me.

Thanks
