hottyarewa:I understand you. I will advise you to shun the thought of seeking help or housing from anybody. Some people are all for it and will accomodate you in an heartbeat, other people wont do it and this is not because they are not good people, its because we are different people who have things we can tolerate and things we cannot. I was housed by a friend for a day and I got my apartment the next day and moved in. I didn't have a bed then but I bought blanket and sheet and I slept on the carpet. Heck, the electricity was not not even on, I bought candles. I had prepared for my accommodation at least 6 months straight before I left Nigeria. So I wasn't bothered. She has even done more than enough to even accommodate me, taking me places and all that. It is when we are expecting too much from other people not forgetting that we are all humans and different individuals that we begin to feel disappointment. This is America, everybody has their own struggles 12 Likes |

bbdd: Thank You. I tried to be as objective as possible so that it won't look like I'm condemning Canada in favor of America. My advisor's exact words during the interview was "Canada is not for the young who are just trying to start their careers. It's very very good for retirement and not for career starting. There is lesser possibility of changing jobs easily like it is done in America because many people tend to hold on to their jobs and not move. Thereby positions don't open often for people to get hired". This is someone that lived in Canada for at least 15 years, he told me his first two kids were born there too. Canada is a large country but small in population in compared to the U.S. Which means lesser jobs. I'm not in any way saying people don't get jobs in Canada but the more population, the more the available jobs. I can't deal with the weather too. I regretted dressing for summer from the U.S the cold was another story. And in May oo. Lol. But thats just me Sha. Some people don't mind 1 Like 1 Share |

akin3102:I understand your concerns and fears. They're not unfounded. But please, bear in mind that it's different strokes for different folks what worked for you might not work for your friend and vice versa. As I said earlier, weigh your options well before making any major decisions. I know it's hard but it's gonna be worth it in the end. I won't lie and tell you you're gonna get visa sponsorship in America and not get in Canada. It goes both ways. I know people both here and in Canada who either got jobs that filed for them or got PR. (I dong know how Canadian PR works btw, but I heard PhDs stand better chances.) I also know people in both countries who are trying to get jobs and stuffs with no success. One was my classmate in Nigeria and he did an Msc in geophysics at one of the best schools in Canada. Completing your degree in either of the countries doesn't guarantee a job neither does it guarantee working visas. Just weigh your options well. Maybe by the time you're done, oil prices will turn to $120 per barrel then they go on an hiring spree. It's late, I'm going to bed. |

akin3102: Like OjaP said, Canada is always the worst hit when oil prices fall. They fire almost immediately and the retrenchments are always massive. I know a couple of people who are living in Canada, got fired because of the oil prices mess and are currently applying to jobs in the U.S. I'm not a geologist but I've got geologist interest. Lol You mentioned that you are looking for ways to save as a student. Might I remind you that you're a student, your main reason for being either in the U.S or Canada is to study and not to work? Which means even if you have a part time job while working in school you will just be cutting it close in terms of finances. No student can save millions of dollars while on a student salary, either Canada or America. There is no much difference between the standard of living in the U.S and Canada. Infact I found stuff in Canada more expensive than the U.S (Maybe I'm just too stingy or that store was just expensive ) Plus it was freezing in Canada in May....when it's summer in the U.S... Lol, j/k You also need to take your finances into consideration. You mentioned that you have an Assistantship here. Do you have one on Canada? Or do you have the promise of one? To me, a bird in hand is worth a million in the bush. Weigh your options. Lastly, think about career prospects. Last semester, I was there with my advisors conducting interviews for the new GAs in my department and one of them got talking about her brother in Canada. My professor who worked in Canada and is a Canadian PR (he's Taiwanese though) said he moved to the U.S because career advancement was just not forthcoming. You might wann think about your job prospects after graduation. Do your list, weigh your pros and cons and I pray God leads you aright. 10 Likes |
