Employers don't want to hear opt work permit, which makes OPT a waste of time. Actually it's more of time for one to think of what to do next and to remain legal in US rather than a period of getting jobs. People should know that foreigner is foreigner. An international student is a foreigner, Americans weigh this well when it comes to hiring anyone. The only field that I've see foreigners getting instant jobs within a month of graduation is nursing and other lucrative healthcare courses. But I don't know if those without green card benefit the same way or not. Also I won't recommend wasting money on healthcare if one knows nothing about chemistry, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology etc or simply lazy to study. Tuition for healthcare fields is expensive.
You're right. But IMO, OPT is not a total waste of time. You're gonna search harder and encounter a lot of rejections while on OPT, but you'll still get jobs on OPT and if you're STEM that gives you 3 years to get that coverted American work experience. In many situations, plenty of emoloyers will file for you if you prove to be a valuable employee. I know about three or four people who got H1B filed for them immediately they were hired on OPT. Some top guys at my work yesterday were even telling me that the company will file for me if I needed it and that they've filed for countless of people (I did not even ask or approach them to file for me before he started saying that o).

But you're right, as a foreigner you have to work twice or thrice as hard to even land a job. The hustle is real.

I'd like to chip in something here though,

Getting a degree in IT does not automatically hand you a job or does not make your job search easier. You still have to work twice as hard or even triple harder than an American to land a gig because your international student and OPT status will be a huge stumbling block. Some emoloyers don't want to hear OPT EAD. Resilience, Luck, Location also plays a huge role in that as well. Like I tell people, I applied to more than a 100 jobs and I have even lost count of the number of interviews I've had. No joke! And I also started my application way early before I graduated.

Again, getting a degree in IT is no free ticket to a job (Many of my my classmates who are international students like me are jobless). Make sure you're well versed in the course, take certification courses in IT, try to get an American work experience even if the pay and the conditions are crappy, move to a state that has more IT opportunities and most of all, tailor your resume all the time to fit the job requirements of the job you're applying to (don't submit the same generic resume over and over again, tailor it to suit what skills the job you're applying to requires) and like I said before, try to get that American work experience even if the pay is crappy. And lest I forget, ditch that crappy Nigerian "CV" that has horrible formatting and unnecessary information like Date of Birth, Sex, Local Government Area, Marital Status, Religion and all that crap. Trust me, I have seen tons of Nigerians here trying to get a job with that kind of resume and I just cringe internally.

A lot of recruiters like seeing an American work experience on your resume. It opens doors for more opportunities. My first job right out of college was not the ideal one I wanted. But I took it cos I needed the experience on my resume. I got my dream job with all the peeks you can ever think of 6 months later. God help us all.

Just curious as to which legit doctor who values his job will want to risk his license to give a bogus surgery requisition. And all just to work minimum wage jobs. But when I heard "Eastern European" I totally understand. Their "Hospital" is in someone's basement.

lol.. i got to social security office and got letter of ineligibiltity for the same purpose however getting a letter from a physician stating u have need for immediate surgery in America is a way to get non work social although people use it to work.. you can always beat the system bro..
Beating the system just to earn minimum wage? Okayyyy.... I hope it's worth it.

I'm curious as to how you can persuade a boar certified and fully licensed physician to give you a letter that you require surgery when you don't actually require any surgery. Because I can't seem to persuade my doctor to do a lot of things for me (even necessary stuff) for the life of me embarassed

Are you paying Medicaid taxes? They don't take out Medicaid taxes from an International Student's paycheck. Only State and Federal taxes (which you even get back when filling for taxes), so no, your wife should not take Medicaid.

While I don't support bickering on this thread, I also will admonish everybody not to allow Angelapinkytoes waltz back onto this thread and act as if no allegations (serious ones involving huge sums of money, btw) were leveled against him/her.

With time, he/she will settle back on this thread like nothing happened and if the allegations are true, eventually he/she will succeed in scamming someone of their hard earned money. In this kind of Nigerian economy, that's suicide. So, Angelapinkytoes, it's either you clear your name or excuse yourself from this thread.

Someone was saying she/he might not be a scammer because Angelapinkytoes posted questions about entering the US on either a B or F visa. Lmao, I laugh. You really do not understand the depth of scammers. They put effort into appearing very legit, which makes you drop your guard and trust them. One thing I'll give the person behind the Angelapinkytoes moniker is that they're very intelligent. Kudos grin. But if you're a scammer and you think you're smart, well newsflash!!! I can detect bullshït from miles away!

Lmaooo, US Student Visa Thread House of Commotion! I cannot laugh abeg grin grin

Shebi when I was calling this girl/guy out with his/her lies, some undesirable elements said I was jealous or was it bragging? A lot of things don't just add up, like seriously! From choosing Howard over Yale (Who da fvck does that?), to selling a Camaro for $13,000 grand (Very impossible, except if the Camaro is a 1975 Edition, Lol), to being a citizen in 3 months. Lots of bragging and chest beating, who does that? Certainly not a legit person.

I've been on this thread long enough to detect frauds when I see one. Anybody who has been here long enough will remember these monikers SmithJanetStore and FvckNL or something. Frauds!! Most times I just sit back and laugh at some of the stories people concoct on here.

Anyway, transact business on this thread with care abeg. cheesy cheesy

Slimmy2005 And Msnas take note!
I was sitting in my corner eleven years ago when a gentleman walked up to me. He said " are you the one occupying this bed". My heart jumped into my mouth. The owner of the bed space has come and my time in that room was up!. I was a struggling student at O.A.U then. Been a finalist i already sold up my own space and used the money to register my final year tuition. I only kept the rest which was #5000 which cannot even buy the cheapest space at Awo Hall at that time. My fate hanged on that young man right in my front. But he looked at me and smiled and told me not to worry. He said i will only come here once in awhile. I was relieved even if those times i will have to sleep in the reading room when he comes but he never for once came. My fellow roommates said this is rare and that i must have used a charm on this youngman cos even if he doesnt need the space he would atleast sell it to ever willing and desperate student who needs somewhere to bunk. I never for once forget that man. I was just lucky to meet a great man. That was my first encounter with a great man and i knew not!
Many years later and many waters over the bridge, i received an anonymous call. I was with my fiancee when the call came. When the person told me he is a popular nairalander, i never knew he was that young man who gave me his space without collecting a kobo from me. We have even shared correspondence without knowing. A perfect fine gentleman and someone i so much respect to on this thread.!
I want to say that even though u think i forget, i never did. That year was the most challenging year i had at O.A.U. at the Department of Geology, White House. I lost all my contact and thank God u called. I maynot have said a proper thank you then but know that i never for once forget your good deed. I know you called me with +1403***********7, I was just seeing my fiancee off and charging my phone but i Got ur contact if you were the call i missed.
I never imagined i could ever met u or speak with you again. That call was one of the best thing today apart from $ being #253. LOL
From the bottom of my heart i want to say God bless you GBOYEGADD. When you need one to attend to you many will line up to do all your wishes.
Bottomline is that you may think this is faceless forum where you can trade insult and what-have-you but some destiny can be determined by that harmless insult you dish to someone. You never know who person at the other end is. let us treat ourselves with Love and Respect. May we all share our success story ijn.
I wasn't initially gonna respond to this. But just thought i'd set things and also set you straight. Take note of what exactly? I beg you in the name of everything you hold dear, do not mention me in anything that pertain to insults or whatever because my patience has really worn thin at this point. I have been on this thread for more than 4 years, I don't pick fights with people. What I will not tolerate and condone is someone attacking my personality and coming for me with no provocation. Yesterday when the other person you mentioned was acting up, I never traded insults with him or insulted him in anyway. I made sure of that, and for you to be sure, I suggest you go read my posts on that matter. He called me names (iidiot, Liar etc) severally and not once did I retaliate by calling him names. So please, I humbly ask you to spare me the satire and not mention me on whatever issue that pertains to insults henceforth.

I have made friends, lot of friends on this thread so yeah, I know you meet people in the weirdest of places. But I will not lay down and allow myself to be trampled upon just because I do not know who the person on the other end is. If you treat me with respect I will reciprocate, and if you treat me otherwise I will also reciprocate. So thanks a lot and have a great day.

Angela, you too have to take it easy.
What regular traveler means? Let me define who a frequent traveler is for you. A frequent traveler is someone who travels at least 4 times a year. Since I've come into America, I make at least 10 trips inside and out of America every year, so yes I qualify to be called a frequent traveler.

And if in doubt, I suggest you go and ask your informant(s), cos if they can be able to tell you my first trip abroad was to the US, they should also be able to furnish you with my yearly travel iterinary wink. Not bragging, just putting it straight. And yeah, I've been here for 3+ years but it's not how far but how well. Don't come for me unless I send for you hombre. It's been nice talking to you.

don't be offended but I'll tell you to shut up. Do you know how many travellers especially Americans have always wanted to see my green passport at the airport. My siblings were all born in America but I was not opportuned cause my mom went into early labor here I was born in Nigeria. I will be a citizen of America in 3months time cause my mom already filed for my citizenship but I will still cherish the green passport. I have friends who want to come to Africa,I still respect Nigeria no matter the economic challenges now.

Busted!!! So you skipped being PR and jumped straight to citizenship abi? You must think all of us on this thread are dumbasses! cheesy How did your mom file for citizenship for you? It's either she filed a petition for you to become a green card holder first or you become a citizen automatically through your parents who were citizens (even though you were born in Nigeria, they just need to file some paperwork, apply for a CRBA(Consular Report of Birth Abroad) if you're under 18 or a Certificate of Citizenship if you're over 18 and you become a citizen as well). I'm pretty sure if the latter is the case, you will know. If you will be a USC in 3 months, why did you not wait until then before you go to grad school instead of hustling for student visa in Nigeria and pay international student fees when you could pay lesser. Even if my Dad was Dangote, I would prefer to wait three months and have the luxury of going to school as a USC, common sense na, lol. Either ways, your story has holes. Small small on this thread abeg!

I am a regular traveler too, and not once has anybody requested to see my Nigerian passport. Haba now!!!

Good day nairalanders,
I need your advice and help on what to do because I am totally confused.
I am 23, holds a Bsc from a Nigerian university.
I recently got into a masters program in the US with full tuition waiver and a generous monthly stipend that would cater for my living expenses. I already have my particulars to apply for my F1 student visa but I'm scared because of the uncertainty that lies ahead; also the exchange rate is not helping matters cry
I am sure I would get the visa but as I'm talking, I only have 100k left on me because I spent a lot during the application processes.
I can huzzle and get my flight fee because I still have 2 months to resumption.
Now, my headache is that I would still need up to $2000(roughly #700,000) to survive for the first month, pay health insurance and other small fees before I start receiving my monthly stipend of $1500.
School resumes August 14, what should I do?
Tried taking up loan from the bank but didn't work out.
I am confused at the moment.
Should I go ahead and get the flight fee, get to US with almost no amount except God provides an helper?
Or should I just forget about my America dream
I have exhausted all my options, God help me.
Please advice a brother.

N.B
My parents are old pensioners that only God knows when the government would answer them.

I am at a crucial point in my life.
Thanks
I have a few questions for you...

1. What is your major?
2. What city/State are you going to?
3. Care to tell me what you need the $2000 for in the beginning? I mean break it down for me...
4. What do you do presently in Nigeria?

Answer those questions and I can give answers to your concerns based on your answers to the questions I asked above

CProf:

1 &2). I studied industrial chemistry, going for MS Environmental chemistry at University of Rhode island,, Kingston.
3) I would pay a deposit of $600 befr registration.
Health insurance is $400/semester and i must pay befr reg. I checked up rooms on craiglist and the cheapest is $500/month. $300-$500 for miscellanous.
4) I finished NYSC in April. Currently coaching some students for neco and GRE where I make 60/month

From your answers, I will advise you to go for it. You're in the STEM field and you have a good chance of landing a job. I don't know much about RI (Rhode Island), but from my research about the town, it's a pretty small town. Cost of living is low You have a high survival chance. I don't know why your school is insisting you pay for health insurance upfront though, most schools will put it in your student bill and you can pay later. Contact the International Student Office or the Students Accounts Office to be double sure about the payment.

Try and connect with Nigerian students who are currently studying in the same school, they might help out with accommodation for a while, pending when you start getting your paycheck. If not, try to hustle the money from Nigeria and pay back when you get your checks. All in all, it's worth a shot and you'll be a fool (excuse my language, cheesy) to pass up on this opportunity. You've got a really good offer that many would kill for. Don't throw it away.

Well,if its so,what's the difference? Been spending money on app fee, sending documents here and there and still got denied.. Funny enof it seems dey don't recognize pgd. So what's the need spending money. I don't think your totally right. Most schools in the US accept ur masters degree for a PhD program. Not necessarily tendering ur undergraduate result.
I wish I could tell you you're right, but sadly.... you're wrong. So wrong. All your transcripts will be looked at from undergraduate to masters when you're applying to a PhD program in the US. The only exception is if you're going the undergrad-PhD route straight. This is first hand experience and not hearsay. Like the other poster said, they might grant you an exception based on your US masters but will be hard with foreign credentials.

You applied to the wrong schools bro. I know countless of schools that will accept you with your credentials, you were looking at the wrong places.

I'd advise you to enter on an F-1 so as to avoid stories that touch from the CBP officers at the point of entry. I've had issues like that, I had two F-1 visas that were both valid (funny but true). They sent me to secondary inspection and kept me there for almost 2 hours grilling me and asking me unnerving questions. It was not a pleasant experience. I almost missed my flight. Until I explained myself well, was I allowed to go.

You never can tell the mood of the officer you're gonna meet at the POE. My opinion

You guys should hear a person out before shredding the person. Many of the comments I have read now shows that we don't read to understand a person's situation then just massacre the person. Haba!

Let's re-read his post less judgmentally and see the learning points inherent in what he is looking for and who it can help later.

Do we have pointers on getting a H1B visa that will enable him work in US legally directly from Nigeria? If his skills are in high demand in US, he should be encouraged to brush his skills, discuss with a few employers/sponsors to seek employment over there during his training period rather than waste away in Nigeria. If accepted, the employer will file all the necessary paperwork to relocate him without him having to 'hustle'. It's all legit

I know of a dude who went for a conference in US on all these nuclear things (he studied physics in school and did masters in Nuclear one thing one thing in UK but came back after studies as per UK law) connected with employers and got offers (his skill is in high demand) Within a year an employer relocated him.

Meanwhile if you study these kind of STEM courses in US, US will strive to keep you in the country by offering 3yrs work permit unlike UK whose looking to throw u out as soon as ur studies are over

LadyG! I sight you peeping!

I really applaud what you just wrote. Kudos, you took time to read and respond to his case. I've been following his story but too busy to respond. There are some points you made that I'd like to correct.

1. The US does offer 1year OPT and then a 2 year STEM-OPT extension (it used to be 17 months). That said, you don't just get the OPT, you apply for it. It's $380. The one year OPT is available for [bF-1][/b] students who either attended a two year college or 4 year college, not a M1 visa holder. The STEM OPT 2 year extension is not for everybdy, it's just for students in the STEM field and subject to strict rules and regulations. After it is approved, you have three months to find a job or you're out of status and have to leave the country. The two year STEM extension is for people who are working in their fields of education and their employers must be e-verified before they can apply for STEM-OPT.

2. H1-B is a lottery system. There is no guarantee. Going by the information he has provided, the course will last him a month or so, if so, he is not even entitled to work authorization or OPT like we all call it because from what I've heard, you get 1 month of work authorization for every 4 months studied. He is studying for just a month.

3. I like the part where you said your friend went to the US, networked, went back to Nigeria and got a company to file an H1-B petition for him. Key is "Go back to Nigeria". Right now, this year's H1-B session is over, anybody that desires such visa has to wait till next year. Can the OP afford to go to Nigeria while waiting for any employer he gets (assuming he gets one) to file his petition? Cos according to him, he is emptying his account for this trip. Bear in mind that if he stays in the US after his training in the hopes of filing for an H1 visa next year, he will have been out of status on his M1 visa and will thereby be illegal and will not be eligible for an H1B

If he plans to go for his training and network and then go to Nigeria and wait for his prospective employer to file for him, that would work. But if he intends to go to the US for training and then stay back in the hopes of getting an employer to petition for him, that definetely won't work.

Also, employers rarely file H1Bs for people in trades and vocations. Most H1s are taken by highly skilled workers because the employers have to prove that they can't find someone in the US to do the job they are petitioning for an H1B for. Tons of Americans have those same qualifications, an employer would not want to spend thousands of dollars on lawyer fees and H1B fees as well. Need I say that those screenshots you attached are positions for highly skilled individuals, people who probably have Bachelors, Masters and PhD in Aerospace Engineering or something. There is no way in hell Qantas is gonna pay a person with vocational training 80grand a year.

Your friend who got an H1 is highly skilled. He has a bachelors in Physics and masters in Nuclear something something (lol). That said Sha, we can't rule out the luck factor and also the God factor. I wish him good luck.

There are specific WU branches that you can make sevis payments. Besides one can help another pay sevis fee. Im sure alot of people have done that. Your best bet is still WU but maybe someone in another state. Also make sure all your info is correct to avoid further delay (school code, sevis id etc) if you cant make the payment before friday reschedule your appointment. You can reschedule once only before it requires you paying anoda visa fee! Best!
