Sure brother! I dey ready o. But why all of una dey take the cold scare me? cheesy Was at the consulate today for my interview that lasted a minute or so. I doubt if this would be helpful to anyone, but make I sha drop am:

VO: Hello, how are you?

Me: I'm good, you?

"Fine thank you," he answered.

VO: So you are going to UW-Madison on a Fulbright program. That is great.

Me: Yeah.

VO: Been to the US before?
"No," I answered.

VO: Let me give you this, consult it in case you have any difficulty in the U.S - which I doubt because you are on a government sponsored program. Meanwhile, you should collect your visa at the Public Affairs Section on Monday. Have a good day.

Me: You too. Thank you.
Congrats godG. Enjoy your stay and studies in the United States.
Food / Re: I Made Fried Chicken For The First Time Today by MsNas(f): 11:35pm On Jul 21, 2015
TheRealAdonye:
I knew today was going to be a lazy Saturday so I had made plans to try something new in the kitchen.
I decided it was going to be KFC styled Fried Chicken. I spent the week familiarizing myself with different recipes I came across. I was at the market yesterday to get the remaining ingredients which I needed and were not available in my kitchen.

Recipe:
Colonel Sanders' recipe had 11 spices. These are Paprika, Onion powder, Salt, Sage, Allspice, Garlic, Oregano, Chili, Black pepper, Marjoram and Basil.

I wasn't able to get all the spices but I made do with what I had, so here goes.

1 tablespoon of Black Pepper
1 tablespoon of Thyme (substitute for Basil)
1 tablespoon of ground garlic (I couldn't get Garlic powder so I bought the fresh one and used approx. 1 cm of it)
2 tablespoons of Salt
1 tablespoon of Onion powder ( I used half of a medium sized Onion instead)

4 cloves of Ginger (not in the recipe but because Individuality)
In addition,
3 cups of All-purpose Flour
1 tin of Milk
2 fresh eggs
Chicken.

I was ready to begin.

Very nice try. You were trying to make breaded chicken drumsticks.

I have a few pointers though....
The Chicken was brown. Why? Because instead of the flour, you were supposed to use breadcrumbs instead of the all purpose flour you used.
Then instead of the eggs, you actually needed to use buttermilk. Both the breadcrumbs and buttermilk are used to coat the chicken.

I usually get breadcrumbs in a pack, but i watched it somewhere on YouTube where someone made her own. Its pretty easy. Looking at this actually made me hungry. I am definitely gonna make some of that when I get home from work. Nice job!

Please take this as a suggestion not criticism. Just offering my own suggestion.

Forgetting that we all different!!!!
I learnt mine in my first job, I lost it after being caught with coy's letter head papper as recommendation letter to pursue my masters degree abroad! Was fired immediately! Haven't recovered from it yet!
It pays to be truthful and smarter...

I swear, I appreciate your truthfulness. You acknowledged wrongdoings....and that is the problem with a lot of us Nigerians. We like to cut corners. Thinking we can get away. Sometimes in May, I was somewhere in Oxnard at one of those training with him. We had to go to the harbor to go eat alongside his coworkers and somewhere long the line someone mentioned that they use their company card to even buy booze at the bar and all sorts. In fact, the food we ate (we were like 6-10) was paid by someone with his own company card. It was a huge sum. The guys were like "You can put anything on your company card".

But later when him and I got talking, we just decided it was not worth it. Is $200 or even $50 even worth losing a job that pays you thousands? These people that even charge every expense on the company card are old guys with decades of experience. Their wrongdoings can be easily overlooked. People like awoof, forgetting that "Awoof dey run belle". I pray you get over the disappointment of losing your job and get a bigger and better one.

Career / Re: How A Guy Was Fired By One Of The Biggest Oil Companies In Nigeria by MsNas(f): 5:43pm On Jul 21, 2015
This story might actually be true. Most of these Oil companies always send their workers on training, and if you are a full time worker you always get a credit card you can use without limits. So far you use it for yourself and on things (food, gas, hotels etc) you only need during the course of the training, conference or workshop.

The mistake anyone will make is incurring extra and frivolous charges on such cards or accounts. For goodness sakes, this guy killed himself. I do not pity him one bit. You had the money to pay the airfare of wifey and kid to fly to Kenya, how much is the extra $300-$500 you would have to pay to upgrade an hotel room? Why cant he allow his family sit in Nigeria if he can't pay extra?

My man works for such, and anytime I go with him on such, he pays for my airfare out of his own pocket. When we go out to eat, we pay with two cards (He puts his food on his company card and mine on his own card). In situations where the training is In-State, he does not go with the company car, lest they accuse him of using company car for something else. He uses his own car, uses their card for exactly the amount of gas he should have used and pays for the rest of the gas out of pocket. Nobody will be questioning him about mileage of the company car because we had to drive with the car somewhere fun, or take the car somewhere with me and God forbid it gets carjacked.

My advise to the guy is to just forget Nigeria. Its easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a camel than to get another job with a multinational oil and gas company after you got fired from your previous job in Nigeria....word travels fast, and they might find it so hard to trust him. He should go to grad school or something and hopefully he will get a job after he graduates.

Good so Please give everyone equal chance like you gave Tinubu who came all the way from Osun state to control ndigenes of Lagos
Can you substantiate your claims with evidence? No? Then it's none of your business wherever Tinubu came from. He's Yoruba isn't it? Then Lagosians do not mind. What they have a problem with is you "at'oko wá ba'léjés" demanding what's not yours in the first place.

You will never find a Yoruba person, even if they were born and bred in Lagos claim to be Lagosian (even of their mom was from Lagos), cos we all know where we came from and we do not covert what's not ours. It's only your people who are too greedy that they keep coverting what's not yours while your ancestral homes falls into derelict. Èmi ò ní f'owó òsì juwe ilé bàbá mi. Be proud of what you are and stop dragging what's not.

Thankfully, Yorubas are aware now and we know not to treat you guys with kids gloves any longer.

Sanchez01:

Yes, Sam Omatseye is an Itsekiri man, and so also the Guild of Editors at The Nation. Being a man from the SS and a someone who is born the SW, the article is much needed. The Yorubas are the most accommodating of all the tribes. They throw away differences and stand behind you whether your root is known or not.

I could remember meeting Omatseye on several occasions. The rapport between him, Gbenga Omotosho, Lekan Otunfoduri, the online new editor, is examplary. I know the three and I believe this article, coming from a third party is needed. I'm not tribalist or whatsoever but I believe the gentility of the Yorubas are being taken for a ride.

The Yorubas often make me forget my roots and at no point in my life has anyone of them insulted me as not being one of them. Jonathan and Agbaje really succeeded in reminding us who we really are, this, I believe, is our root cause. Oba Akiolu, though, went far but I honestly do not blame him.

My Yoruba friends who served in the SE narrated on several occasions of how a Champions League night is so disturbing. They are often reminded as being Yorubas and called "N.gbati"( the word has been substituted for Yoruba on the forum) people. I strongly feel some of the ethnic tribes in the SW are way too comfortable such that ownership claims are the next on their agenda. Modakeke and Ife comes to mind, but that's a bit different because both are Yorubas.

Regardless, being defined by ethnicity and religion in a country of over 160 million people is bad. The need to be cohesive, not only in the SW but also in the North, the SE and the SS is paramount. At the long run, we would say Nigeria binds and defines us.
Thanks a lot for the bolded. Even the ones I call my friends here will not hesitate to call me Ng.bati at the slightest opportunity, Their mom actually called all Yorubas slaves and saboteurs just because I chose to support Buhari and she also claimed my people sabotaged their useless civil war. I politely asked her if she expected my people to lay their lives and those of their children down so they could fight a fight that was none of their business in the first place?

Igbos are the most tribalistic people in Nigeria, yet they will be the first ones to cry wolf when you retaliate. My roommate who is a bible thumping liar, always forming holier than thou called me Ofe Mmanu when she was explaining what led to a shouting match between herself and I on the phone to her sister. Just because I asked her to return my stuff she took.

Thankfully, this whole scenario has made me realize one thing.... I am Yoruba before being Nigerian. These people do not mean well for me, cos trust me, its not only the ones who live in Lagos that deem it a No Man's Land, the ones in America do too. Afi bi eni pe won shepe Eko fun won ni. Awon Olori pelebe, baseje Obi tin so leerun!

Walmart uses ECM technology, they couldn't tag all the items, that's more than 50,000 items in one single store... That will be ridiculous. The CCTV are set to monitor HOT area such electronics, HBA and some other areas. That you left with a $3.99 pack of water is insignificant to the store. When you steal a $1,000 TV, that becomes a different issue.
We are pretty much saying the same thing. The other person said there is no way you can get out of these stores with anything you have not paid for and I made an argument that not all of those things go noticed. It is not as if you walk out of there with a pin that isn't yours, the security guys are gonna be hot on your heels.

I pretty sure the ladies in the video would not have attempted to steal the bag (the one the woman was examining) as well, its these small things that those petty thieves target. Stores that stock up on small items like these hardly have somebody watching the cameras.

Have you seen the security control room of Harrods before? I have and they have security men with radios monitoring the screens as well as patrolling the shop floor.
They don't just rely on tags and yes they do pay people to monitor CCTV and that is a hard fact..

Nuff said
Yeah, they have staff monitoring them, but I don't think the staff do their jobs well, just as coogar said. I know Walmart does little or no monitoring, even many of the big, name brand stores do not have anybody monitoring the floors(expect some of the very exclusive designer store sha o). There has been a time, my friends and I went shopping and we bought water and lots of other things. Because it is too heavy, we put the water and some other heavier stuffs under the cart and we checked out the items. It was after we reached the parking lot and unloaded the cart that we noticed the items underneath... yet the door sensor let us out without beeping, we had to go back in to pay for it. Even the cashier didn't notice. Most big grocery stores hardly do monitoring.

Some clothing stores do not as well. But I know quite a few that tag their clothes with one little plastic thing (I think the thing contains ink) and only the people at the checkout counter can remove it. If you try taking it out of the store the alarm will go off and if by any means you succeed in taking it out, you cannot wear it because the contraption cannot be removed. Forceful removal will cause the ink to be spilled on the clothes and it does not wash out, rendering it useless. But lots and lots of stores hardly monitor those stuffs. Which gives a field day for thieves, sadly.

Don't panic. The school knows how much time you need to complete your credit hours. The fact that you have 32months on it does not mean you cannot complete your requirements in 18-24 months. It all depends on you. My I-20 isn't also the normal 24months and I have like 39-42 credit hours, but I could chose to fast track and complete it in 24months or earlier than that.

You will be given a 2 year visa like every other Nigerian F-1 visa holder but you can renew it anytime before or after it expires, or you could stay back in America, so far you are not out of status, you are good.
Culture / Re: Igbo Language And Its Downward Trend by MsNas(f): 5:40pm On Mar 03, 2015
Although I am Yoruba, I can attest to the fact that Igbos outside the SE are somewhat ashamed to speak the language and is disheartening. Maybe 7-8 years in Lagos, I took a bike and when I came down I asked the bike man to wait for me to get him change, but I spoke it in Yoruba, totally forgetting myself (I was supposed to speak pidgin, but Yoruba was the first language that came to my head), if you see this how this man berated me? It was as if I committed a crime. His exact words were "How would a fine girl like you be speaking Yoruba? ". I was so embarrassed cos he was shouting. Why should I be ashamed to speak my language?

Another case is about some of my friends, siblings. They were born and bred in the SE but feel so uncomfortable speaking Igbo to themselves. I asked the eldest why she doesn't speak Igbo to her siblings and she told me its weird for them to speak Igbo with each other. I was like, what She even asked me what kind of language I speak ro my boyfriend? I replied, Yoruba. Cos we both are Yorubas who understand Yoruba so why should I speak English to him?

I had to beg one of them who is married to a Delta man to Please teach the children Igbo and not restrict them to one language (English) only. It's inevitable that they will speak English cos they live where everyone speaks English therefore they are gonna speak fluent English anyways. Na so children dey take lost for here if you don't give them an Identity via the Language. I have met several people who will gladly tell you, My Dad/Parents are Nigerians but I am American. Like WTF? Some Yorubas are guilty of this too. My Uncle's children that were born in Ibadan barely speak Yoruba and their father will gladly tell you that. For what? I feel weird speaking English with my parents. Really weird.

Phones / Re: Is Atm Card The Same To Credit Card by MsNas(f): 4:40am On Feb 26, 2015
iamrealdeji:

Ok,i just see the reason why guarantors are required, but what if you work for government and your boss has nothing to do with your salary, and also, must the boss notify the bank that they want to sack the account holder like a month before they sack him? Cos mst bosses sack immediately,or is it when they give quarries that the bank take action? Also,if the person collects let's say 150k per month, can he withdraw like 400k even if he doesn't have up to 150k in his account,or there's a limit to what he can withdraw?
I never knew they give credit cards in Nigeria. But this is what I know about it...
First, credit cards can be given by banks (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, Citibank etc) or normal credit card companies (Discover, Capital One, American Express and so on) .

So when you apply for a credit card, before the application is approved, a background check is carried out using your name and your social security number and some other stuffs. What they do in essence is to input your Social Security Number into the credit reporting database and see what's up. The credit reporting database is usually FICO or something. You might be wondering, how would they know my credit score? Well, everything you do here (okay, almost everything) involves your social security number.

So let's say you wanna open an account, they would need you to provide an SSN. After opening that account, and maybe you take out a loan of say 1000 and you don't pay it back. The bank will close your account and report you to one bureau like that ( can't remember the name) . After they have reported you, the debt will go into what is called collections and then show up on your credit score and credit report.

So when you apply for a credit card, and they check your credit score and see that you have a pending collections (that is what they call the debt you owe) or low credit score, and if you do, most likely the credit people will deny your application. Cos they know they cannot trust you with their money. You will spend it and not return it. Lol

But if you have a good credit score and history your application will be approved. Then they will set a limit for the card depending on your salary. You cannot spend more than that limit. When you pay it back, your limit will be reset to the initial amount (maybe $500) and you use and pay back.

As your continue and if you're paying regularly and not owing then they will continue to increase your limit as time goes on. I've seen people that had their credit limit increased to like $1500 in 6 months. Depending on their discretion. But you have to pay back and also pay back on time. Cos if you don't, you will be charged a late fee, sometimes as high as $100 and also interest on the money you spend on the card. Credit card is the devil. The key is moderation.

Hello guys,
how tough is it to score above 25 on the SPEAKING section of TOEFL?
I really want to hit that mark.
Not that tough. Speak clearly and concisely. Slowly too. Don't rush. Neither should you fake an accent. The first speaking task might throw you off (mine did) cos you're trying to manage time while speaking as clearly as possible but you get into the mix after that. It's really easy, especially if you speak good English albeit with a Nigerian accent. Scoring above 25 might also nail you a good assistantship especially one that requires teaching. Aim to score at least 26 on all the sections.
