AgricultureRe: How I Started My Earthen Pond Fish Farming In Abuja by msogunro: 11:22am On Nov 18, 2016
Kaykaymil:
Okay I have been away for Long been working on our transition from foreign to local feed with the help of a Nairalander here @Ttalk who is a specialist in formulating local feeds we have acquired the machine and the skill required to be producing our feed inhouse.

The cost of buying foreign feed aquamax for example is #6,500 6mm for a 15kg bag which means 1kG = #433.33 if my fishes eat 10 tonne of feed which means I would spend 10,000 X 433.33 which is 4,333,000 that is what I would have to spend to hit that amount.

Now with reduced cost we can actually make local sinking feed at #250 naira per kg which means if my fishes eat 10 tonne of feeds I would spend
10,000 X 250 = 2,500,000 which is relatively fair. even though it has its disadvantages.
How much was the equipment?

@raff my brother, my fish are showing similar symptoms.
Tommorow will mark exactly one week since I stocked one half of my tarpaulin pond (7x4x4deep) with 500 juvenile catfish. I noticed that two were eaten at the point of introduction and I discovered no fewer than 12 fish were eaten when I changed the water this evening. Some have bruises and some white patches.
My pond constructor/consultant has not picked my call for the past three days.
I plead with the kind hearted gurus to help a brother.
Are you adding juveniles to a tank filled with juveniles? Make sure you're properly sizing your fish. Catfish are also omnivores and will eat smaller fish.

Dug a borehole of 80m : my water analysis- PH is 7.04 Fe is 4.50mg/l Zn is 0.320 mg/l TDS is 38.5. e sanu aje!!!
White spots? HOPE it's not ICH.

I suggest you remove any fish in your system that has a white spots on them. They will spread the disease and later die.

Put the fish that do not have white spots in a quarantine tank.

Clean the now empty tank with bleach and fresh water. Let the bleach and water solution sit in the tank for 24 hours. After 24 hours, thoroughly rinse the tank with fresh water. Refill the tank with fresh water and place the fish in quarantine that have not developed white spots into the clean tank.

Follow the same process with the quarantine tank.

If you currently have a lot of fish wit white spots, I would not even bother about putting them in quarentine. Just clean the tank and start fresh.

N900 per bag and they can do between 10 - 15 bags per day based on how many they produce per bag. I will need to give them at least 2 weeks notice in advance because they are always busy and on sites.
N900? Thanks, but I will have to pass.

I don't have not know any block moulder in Agbowa but I'll help you make inquiry. The other option is I have a team of moulder's I can bring in from outside Lagos that all they do is contract block moulding, you buy all the material and pay them for moulding per bag of cement and wetting the blocks. You decide how many blocks you want moulded per bag of cement.
What is the fee per bag?

My people, I'm back with another one. You know I always have to watch my back. I feel like everyone is out to get me. My associate is very honest, but he doesn't know much about construction.

Please help me with this estimate.

I want to mould 4,100 blocks on my site in Agbowa and I came up with the estimates for materials.

Following the 1:2:4 ratio

4,100 of 6" blocks /divided by 26 blocks per cement bag = 158 bags of cement (7,884 KG or 9 tons of cement)

18 tons of sand.

36 tons of granite.

Am I correct?

How many fishes can my pond contain?
My pond size
Lenght=20ft
Width=10ft
Depth=6ft.
= 1,200 cubic feet = 8,977 gallons

My rule of thumb is 1lb of fish for every 2 gallons.

I would stock 1,125 fish that would eventually grow to roughly 2.2lbs/1kg.

That is what I would do. I'm sure others will say you can stock more.

What a disappointment. I asked my associate to call you. You don't sell less than 300 bags of cement is what I was told.

How many people on Naira land will NEED more than 300 bags of cement?

From my recent findings, they normally charge 650-700 per bag. 30 blocks per bag is very good. 35 per bag is not good enough for 6" blocks. 25 per bag for 9" blocks. Cement is currently sold at 2100-2150.
Ok thanks for the info.

Is that the price of 1 bag of cement or when you buy in bulk?

I think my legs are being pulled, but I'm not sure so I hope my people will be able to help.

I was just told by a block moulder that he will only make 30 blocks with 1 bag of cement and the charge is N800 per bag. The problem is I want 35 blocks per bag. Making 30 blocks per bag adds about N40K to my budget.

This is supposed to be a fixed price in Agbowa. Can anyone confirm if this is the case? Have you heard of such?

My humble advise to builders is this, if your charges are too high the investors would always get someone to do the job for lower fee. Just be considerate and everyone will be happy.
Can you recommend a bricklayer working in Ikorodu (Agbowa)?

. You said it already extremely high tell him to work out how he got N300k.l think you should add N30k for digging,N10k for mixing of cement for the gate and N175k for the 3,500 Blocks.
Thanks.

N215K to lay the block's and hang the gate?

Mallams that dig in Ikorodu are not that sophisticated. They charge you a blanket price and you negotiate a good bargain depending on the terrain and soil texture.
Ok.

What about bricklayers. In Ikorodu, is it N50 per block and is the mixing of the cement included.

I was recently given a quote of N300K to lay 3,500 blocks, mix cement, and hang the gate.

3,500 blocks * N50 = N175K

That leaves N125K for the remaining work. This is extremely high compares to a fence and gate I just completed in Ibadan.

The fence in Ibadan has been completed, so I can now focus on what will actually make me money in Nigeria. This is phase 2 of our "moving back to Nigeria" plan.

You mentioned you wash your vats. What are you washing it with?

How big is your tank and how many fish are in it?
