You are touting the same mistake the world made about Hitler as solution - appeasement. You are telling a sovereign nation to sign away part of its land - Luhansk and Donetsk. Ukraine is a sovereign nation and should have rights to determine to be a member of any association just like Russia. Russia belongs to any union she wants.

Russia is about to default on its debt. Russia's foreign reserve has been frozen. It is a case of having money which you don't have access to. We are not talking of a million dollar companies, most of these companies are billion dollar companies.

I repeat you need sound technical know how and lot of money to bring them back to life. And those companies that left aint stupid, they would have gone away with some critical components which will be irreplaceable. In Russia, most of those companies will become abandoned with rising unemployment in Russia.,

It is not enough to just nationalise a firm. Do you have the technical know how and the budget to make them functional? It is not easy. Do you see how much US has spent in Ukraine...billions of dollars. Russia is not as rich. They have little financial capabilities to do as you envisioned.

Its not sustainable. The Central bank of Russia is constantly intervening with restrictions on foreigners from dumping their shares. The stock market is not fully open with some number of shares not being traded. Russia will soon run out of resources to defend the roubles. Forcing many companies to convert their earning in dollars to roubles is not the way to go.

The whole world knows the value at which Rouble is being traded is artificial, and the US is also pushing Russia to default on its debt by freezing out its assets and financial warchest. That will negatively impact on Russia's global rating which will be suicidal for Russia.

And these are just states in the US. That is to tell you that US is the biggest economy in the world, Russia does not come near.

US generates money from different sources, Russia does not enjoy that. So, US is the biggest producer, and they are storing for the future because the future is not certain for any country. When other countries oil and gas run dry, US will still be functioning. Infact US was even buying from Russia till late, despite being the biggest PRODUCER. That should tell you something.

Russia has no existing infrastructure to divert the volume of gas being bought by EU to either china or India. India is paying Rupee for Russia oil. It is an arrangement of Rupee-Rouble between the two countries. China is paying in Yuan. Don't forget that India is buying at a discount which does not pay Russia either.

Russia has just made some moves that are going to change the global financial system forever.

Those attempts were successful for a few days, but now the value of the rouble relative to the U.S. dollar is almost all the way back to where it was before the start of the war.

“I have decided to implement … a series of measures to switch payments — we’ll start with that — for our natural gas supplies to so-called unfriendly countries into Russian roubles,” Putin said in a televised government meeting, adding that trust in the dollar and euro had been “compromised” by the West’s seizure of Russian assets.

Secondly, the Russians have decided that U.S. dollars will no longer be accepted as payment for anything that they sell to other nations. Pavel Zavalny, the head of the Russian parliament, says that U.S. currency “has lost all interest for us”…

Much more interesting was Zavalny’s main point, even though it has been mostly overlooked. If other countries want to buy oil, gas, other resources or anything else from Russia, he said, “let them pay either in hard currency, and this is gold for us, or pay as it is convenient for us, this is the national currency.”

In other words, Russia is happy to accept your national currency — yuan, lira, ringgits or whatever — or roubles, or “hard currency,” and for them that no longer means U.S. dollars, it means gold.

“The dollar ceases to be a means of payment for us, it has lost all interest for us,” Zavalny added, calling the greenback “no better than “candy wrappers.”

This is huge, but it isn’t being discussed much by the corporate media in the United States, or Australia!.

The Russians aren’t just saying that they do not recognize U.S. dollars as the reserve currency of the world any longer. That would be bad enough.

At this point, they are actually saying that they will no longer accept U.S. dollars as a form of payment at all.

This is the largest seismic adjustment to ve been cut offthe world financial system since the end of World War 2.

I respect the view of your friend but I will disagree with it. Russia has no choice but to jettison USD anyway since they have no means of earning in dollars. Did your friend tell you that Russia is ARTIFICIALLY propping up the roubles by a lot of interventionist policies, which are not sustainable from the Central Bank of Russia. The stock market is not fully open, they have restricted Russians from sending money outside Russia and lot of foreigners holding stocks have been restricted from dumping their shares. Many companies have left Russia and unemployment of immense proportion is looming large. Also, Russia has forced Gazprom and other major Russia exporters to convert 80% of their foreign exchange to Roubles. That's artificial and not sustainable. Roubles will slide again.

Sanctions always have long term effect, and Russia economy is hurting so badly. Russia's action has no impact on USD being the world's leading currency. Russia has SPFS as an alternative to SWIFT, how many transactions in volumes and participants are on it compared to SWIFT. Russia is boxed into a corner already. Some people are talking as if EU cant call the bluff of Russia on gas. Lithuania has just done it. Germany has said it would never pay in roubles. The same with Italy. Let us see who blinks first. Russia needs the EU money, and while EU will be hurt, trust me, Russia will hurt more as they have no means of diverting the EU gas to China right now, and anyway China will buy at a discounted rate. Russia needs money so bad. It is a game of who blinks first, let's continue to watch how it unfolds. Putin is no genius, he is a crazy leader who will be known to fight a needless war that pushed his country to the precipice.

Our lifestyle depletes the foreign reserve too. When we buy anything from abroad, FG settles the bill on our behalf using the dollars in the reserve, while debiting our Naira account. And we are still surpirsed that naira keeps losing value when what we can use to defend it keeps dropping.

The policy that makes FG to provide Dollars to students going abroad or anyone visiting abroad should be stopped. If you want to go abroad except on health ground, seek for your own dollars. We keep depleting this foreign reserve over frivolities.

Court of arbitration doesn't handle sanctions. That's not their mandate. Let me give you a simple illustration, you come to my house to keep your gold, I reserve the right to tell you what I can do with your gold in case we have issues. It is up to you to determine if you still want to go ahead to keep your assets at my house. Your gold will be subjected to my local law. It is not a business, it is your sole prerogative to determine to keep your assets in my house or not.

Let me school you, US is not a member of international criminal court (ICC). So how can ICC try Bush when US did not sign the treaty to be a member. ICC is a voluntary organisation. Let me educate you, even South Africa revokes their membership from ICC which means ICC automatically lacks jurisdiction to prosecute any south African in ICC.

For court of arbitration, Russia is a member and a Russian is currently the vice president of the court of arbitration. Thus they are subjected to the jurisdiction of the court.

Tell me what contract is breached. When you have assets on a foreign soil, you are well aware of the degree of risk you are exposed to. The government can nationalise or freeze your assets. All governments of the world are aware of this. It is a written contract.

Obasanjo nationalised then Barclays bank in Nigeria. This is a tool available to every government. Sales of oil is guided by a different kind of contract. Both the seller and the buyer agree to a set of rules which is enforceable by court of arbitration.

I can see that many people struggle with the idea of contract because they hardly fulfil their obligations to contract in this part of the world.

For the educated illiterates on this forum who think international contract is run anyhow, try and read this article, maybe, just maybe, you will be open minded enough to learn one or two things:

I am sorry it doesn't work that way. Sanctions and Contract are not related. Russia will pay a heavy fine from Court of Arbitration. What Putin said cannot be enforced.

Not when signed contract is involved

Putin cannot just wake up to unilaterally change a signed contract agreed by all parties. The contract states Russia gas would be paid for in Euros and NOT in rubles. Russia will be dragged to Court of Arbitration for resolution.
