UC92: So sorry about this failure. I think the issue here is: 1.Since there are no vertical support for the concrete fascia, Beams should have been introduced in the internal walls to anchor the fascia. 2. Since the builder opted for 6inches blocks he would have used the 6inches solid blocks even thou this isn't the cause. 3. Chained lintel is important for bungalows without columns.
The bungalow here is a 6bedroom, done without columns except for the fancy ones at the approach. perfectly put sir |

Hatesin: I laugh whenever I read some of this self-acclaimed jack of all trades professionals capitalize on the size of blocks in building constructions. For crying out loud, the size of blocks has nothing to do with the strength or weakness of a structure. What matters is the strength of the blocks irrespective of the size. I have seen a storey building constructed with 5" solid blocks and as I type, that house is still standing and has stood for more than 20years without any single crack.
So, recommending 100-inch size blocks for a client just to appear more professional solves no problem My dilemma is that all these people advising did not see where lintel was done halfway, only the windows carry lintel. There are millions of bungalow with no single pillars and it has not fallen. I am not a builder but I have seen so many and my bungalow with no pillars but 9 inch vibrated blocks.

erico2k2: your are missing the point, this is in the USA, so people who are on the middle class ie teachers and other civil servants in the USA can afford them houses, no Nigeria, if placed in the Nigerian context might have to be N15million or N20 million payable over 30 years Ok understood sir, and sorry for misunderstanding you. |

erico2k2: these are the houses the average MAN livs in bro 200,000 $ × 500 naira = 100 million naira. Ask yourself how many people can make 100 million in 20 years in Nigeria. A house of 20 million is not affordable housing not to talk of 100 million |

BrabusNG: When I told my client to allow us pick a larger chunk of reinforcements needed on my ongoing project, he was kinda reluctant at first and felt like “Prices could come down.”
I told him I have control over almost all other variables but reinforcement. Cement, sand, aggregates and formwork won’t pose a challenge for me on the project as I have better strategies to handle nasty surprises BUT reinforcements.
Today iron rod is 360k/ton... that’s 60k + over budget and the project is not even up 1 month old.
_________
While I was stocking up reinforcements, one of my friend decided to buy 4 wheelbarrows at DPC stage He had only 15 lengths of reinforcements left on his site.
Here’s the thing: Contractors using 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems to plan their projects would do far better than those who “work as the spirit led” in time like this.
For my friend (a certified member of NIQS), a wheelbarrow that can be rented at N500/day is a bigger priority in a very unpredictable market
Even the people we call the illiterates are far smarter. I’d share a project shortly being executed by almost an illiterate man. He bought all the reinforcement for his 3 floor buildings at once and over 1500 planks.
Always remember, a QS quote won’t keep the price at “K” A smarter approach to construction will do.
Good morning all! you should avoid bringing down the institution. You can pass the information without downgrading them. My opinion |

Someone complained that water is finding its way to his parlour. He did not accuse the engineer not any artisans rather he blamed the door and went ahead to look for solutions.
This is maturity and someone who knows what he doing.
Some people would have been shouting fraud up and down, all accusing everyone. |

I’ve never been and will never be scammed in Nigeria. Trust is the currency of fraud. Since I have none then I’m immune.
My involvement was because my project was insulted as “Orule Abule” and I reacted. I’ve put on my big boy pants and shrugged it off now.

Case settled lets all move on. InvertedHammer: / I have been on NL for years (since 2012). I have searched my soul and mind on why I would want to run you down. I couldn't come up with one reason. I can't identify you in a line up and I believe it is the same for you.
Read through the conversation you posted below. You said the Aluminum fabricator said he doesn't want to modify the measurements. Along the line you mentioned that they modify to maximize profit. Those are your words. And you were asked what prompted the discussion about "modification" and "maximizing profit" especially considering that two of you have your measurements? Then you took offense. I
If you don't see the red flag there about modification and maximizing profit that prompted the word "collusion", so be it. I read through the same transcript and formed an opinion. Based on my experience here, I am not worried about dishonest people because they are quick to detect. I am worried about honest people who derail. I believe you know your craft and will not hesitate to give you a job strictly to fabricate if I have some.
Good luck. / |

coldcandy: Education is not only for certificates and employment. Education is for the development of the human person, his intellect and general awareness of his surroundings. A skilled millionaire who is a social misfit is of no use to the society. Let everyone be able to read, write, speak and think/reason in at least one language. A young child learning how to fix things is not education for you. It's common thing to say a hausa or igbo man is illiterate, when he/she can read and write in a given language (definition of literacy). But because he or she can not speak English he is an illiterate. He is receiving or giving systematic instruction and the workshop is the school or university

valencia2012: Even when you end up with a 99 percent accurate measurement, you could still be screwed on site. Having saved over 133 square meters from seven different quotations, my cousin still got screwed during installation. 133 square meters of stone coated meant for his roofing was discovered in a nearby bushy plot. The same 133 that was allegedly saved, The same 133 that would later be required to complete the installation!! This is why my roofing is on hold until am home! Same faces, different voices! mine I got a quotation of 285 from 4 different people, I bought 300sqm because of wastage. I was on ground at the shop during loading and I was counting them in bulk of 30sqm. But to my surprise, after installation 300sqm finished with the work still pending and I have to add 15sqm to complete the house. If they will cheat you they have so many ways to cheat.
