On August 28, 1928, in the Scottish highlands, began the secret story of oil.


Three men had an appointment at Achnacarry Castle - a Dutchman, an American and an Englishman.

The Dutchman was Henry Deterding, a man nicknamed the Napoleon of Oil, having exploited a find in Sumatra. He joined forces with a rich ship owner and painted Shell salesman and together the two men founded Royal Dutch Shell.

The American was Walter C. Teagle and he represents the Standard Oil Company, founded by John D. Rockefeller at the age of 31 - the future Exxon. Oil wells, transport, refining and distribution of oil - everything is controlled by Standard oil.

The Englishman, Sir John Cadman, was the director of the Anglo-Persian oil Company, soon to become BP. On the initiative of a young Winston Churchill, the British government had taken a stake in BP and the Royal Navy switched its fuel from coal to oil. With fuel-hungry ships, planes and tanks, oil became "the blood of every battle".

The new automobile industry was developing fast, and the Ford T was selling by the million. The world was thirsty for oil, and companies were waging a merciless contest but the competition was making the market unstable.

That August night, the three men decided to stop fighting and to start sharing out the world's oil. Their vision was that production zones, transport costs, sales prices - everything would be agreed and shared. And so began a great cartel, whose purpose was to dominate the world, by controlling its oil.

Four others soon joined them, and they came to be known as the Seven Sisters - the biggest oil companies in the world.

EPISODE 1: DESERT STORMS

In the first episode, we travel across the Middle East, through both time and space.

"We waged the Iran-Iraq war and I say we waged it, because one country had to be used to destroy the other."

Since that notorious meeting at Achnacarry Castle on August 28, 1928, they have never ceased to plot, to plan and to scheme.

Throughout the region's modern history, since the discovery of oil, the Seven Sisters have sought to control the balance of power.


They have supported monarchies in Iran and Saudi Arabia, opposed the creation of OPEC, profiting from the Iran-Iraq war, leading to the ultimate destruction of Saddam Hussein and Iraq.

The Seven Sisters were always present, and almost always came out on top.

EPISODE 2: THE BLACK EL DORADO


At the end of the 1960s, the Seven Sisters, the major oil companies, controlled 85 percent of the world's oil reserves. Today, they control just 10 percent.

New hunting grounds are therefore required, and the Sisters have turned their gaze towards Africa. With peak oil, wars in the Middle East, and the rise in crude prices, Africa is the oil companies' new battleground.

Everybody thought there could be oil in Sudan but nobody knew anything. It was revealed through exploration by the American company Chevron, towards the end of the 70s. And that was the beginning of the second civil war, which went on until 2002. It lasted for 19 years and cost a million and a half lives and the oil business was at the heart of it.

But the real story, the secret story of oil, begins far from Africa.

In their bid to dominate Africa, the Sisters installed a king in Libya, a dictator in Gabon, fought the nationalisation of oil resources in Algeria, and through corruption, war and assassinations, brought Nigeria to its knees.

Oil may be flowing into the holds of huge tankers, but in Lagos, petrol shortages are chronic.

The country's four refineries are obsolete and the continent's main oil exporter is forced to import refined petrol - a paradox that reaps fortunes for a handful of oil companies.

Encouraged by the companies, corruption has become a system of government - some $50bn are estimated to have 'disappeared' out of the $350bn received since independence.

But new players have now joined the great oil game.

China, with its growing appetite for energy, has found new friends in Sudan, and the Chinese builders have moved in. Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir is proud of his co-operation with China - a dam on the Nile, roads, and stadiums.

In order to export 500,000 barrels of oil a day from the oil fields in the South - China financed and built the Heglig pipeline connected to Port Sudan - now South Sudan's precious oil is shipped through North Sudan to Chinese ports.

In a bid to secure oil supplies out of Libya, the US, the UK and the Seven Sisters made peace with the once shunned Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, until he was killed during the Libyan uprising of 2011, but the flow of Libyan oil remains uninterrupted.

In need of funds for rebuilding, Libya is now back to pumping more than a million barrels of oil per day. And the Sisters are happy to oblige.

EPISODE 3: THE DANCING BEAR


In the Caucasus, the US and Russia are vying for control of the region. The great oil game is in full swing. Whoever controls the Caucasus and its roads, controls the transport of oil from the Caspian Sea.

Tbilisi, Erevan and Baku - the three capitals of the Caucasus. The oil from Baku in Azerbaijan is a strategic priority
for all the major companies.

From the fortunes of the Nobel family to the Russian revolution, to World War II, oil from the Caucasus and the Caspian has played a central role. Lenin fixated on conquering the Azeri capital Baku for its oil, as did Stalin and Hitler.

On his birthday in 1941, Adolf Hitler received a chocolate and cream birthday cake, representing a map. He chose the slice with Baku on it.

On June 22nd 1941, the armies of the Third Reich invaded Russia. The crucial battle of Stalingrad was the key to the road to the Caucasus and Baku’s oil, and would decide the outcome of the war.

Stalin told his troops: "Fighting for one’s oil is fighting for one’s freedom."

After World War II, President Nikita Krushchev would build the Soviet empire and its Red Army with revenues from the USSR’s new-found oil reserves.

Decades later, oil would bring that empire to its knees, when Saudi Arabia and the US would conspire to open up the oil taps, flood the markets, and bring the price of oil down to $13 per barrel. Russian oligarchs would take up the oil mantle, only to be put in their place by their president, Vladimir Putin, who knows that oil is power.

The US and Putin‘s Russia would prop up despots, and exploit regional conflicts to maintain a grip on the oil fields of the Caucusus and the Caspian.

But they would not have counted on the rise of a new, strong and hungry China, with an almost limitless appetite for oil and energy. Today, the US, Russia and China contest the control of the former USSR’s fossil fuel reserves, and the supply routes. A three-handed match, with the world as spectators, between three ferocious beasts – The American eagle, the Russian bear, and the Chinese dragon.

EPISODE 4: A TIME FOR LIES


Peak oil – the point in time at which the highest rate of oil extraction has been reached, and after which world production will start decline. Many geologists and the International Energy Agency say the world's crude oil output reached its peak in 2006.

But while there may be less oil coming out of the ground, the demand for it is definitely on the rise.

The final episode of this series explores what happens when oil becomes more and more inaccessible, while at the same time, new powers like China and India try to fulfill their growing energy needs.

And countries like Iran, while suffering international sanctions, have welcomed these new oil buyers, who put business ahead of lectures on human rights and nuclear ambitions.

At the same time, oil-producing countries have had enough with the Seven Sisters controlling their oil assets. Nationalisation of oil reserves around the world has ushered in a new generation of oil companies all vying for a slice of the oil pie.

These are the new Seven Sisters:

Saudi Arabia's Saudi Aramco, the largest and most sophisticated oil company in the world; Russia's Gazprom, a company that Russia's President Vladimir Putin wrested away from the oligarchs; The China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), which, along with its subsidiary, Petrochina, is the world's secnd largest company in terms of market value; The National Iranian Oil Company, which has a monopoly on exploration, extraction, transportation and exportation of crude oil in Iran – OPEC's second largest oil producer after Saudi Arabia; Venezuela's PDVSA, a company the late president Hugo Chavez dismantled and rebuilt into his country's economic engine and part of his diplomatic arsenal; Brazil's Petrobras, a leader in deep water oil production, that pumps out 2 million barrels of crude oil a day; and Malaysia's Petronas - Asia's most profitable company in 2012.

Mainly state-owned, the new Seven Sisters control a third of the world's oil and gas production, and more than a third of the world's reserves. The old Seven Sisters, by comparison, produce a tenth of the world's oil, and control only three percent of the reserves.

The balance has shifted.

What sort of backward thinking is it? Women in Northern Nigeria already have it hard, they are being sold as wives to old men everyday. They have been stripped of their rights as human beings already.

The bulk of our problem in this country starts from parents having children they cannot care for. These children are being put to the street at a very young age to work, given as house-help, maltreated and abused daily. They in turn, grow up to be abusive and wicked just like how they were treated. Its an ugly cycle.

It's a nice story, but it's also entirely besides the point. To be sure, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant doesn't equal "Islam", a reality demonstrated by its daily brutality against fellow Muslims. Fundamentally wrong
But that doesn't mean that there's not something fundamentally wrong with beliefs and practices drawn from its most fundamental texts, tenets and doctrines.
Even US President Barack Obama has resorted to quoting the Quran, specifically 5:32 - "Whosoever slays a soul it shall be as if he had slain all mankind; and whoso saves one life it shall be as if he has saved all mankind" - to demonstrate Islam's peaceful essence.


Indeed, the problem with critics of Islam like Bill Maher and Richard Dawkins is not so much that they are wrong about Islam as much as that they assume Islam and Muslims are somehow unique in their prejudices, chauvinism and violence. If only that were true.
If we turn to the original "People of the Book", Jews, the situation is little better. American Jews might be the country's most reliably liberal demographic; but for half-a-century the community has, almost whole cloth, actively enabled and supported one of the world's most brutal and longest occupations, which has been carried out and deepened year after year in their name and in the name of their religion.
But why stop with Jews? By many measures, the worst country on earth to be a woman is not Muslim, it's Hindu India , where Muslims have also been subject to horrific massacres and systematic discrimination. If we move a bit farther east, even Buddhism's reputation as a religion of peace falls apart the moment we cross into Myanmar and observe the near
genocidal treatment of the country's Rohingya Muslim minority.
If I have saved Christianity for last it's only because the crimes committed in the name of Jesus are so vast and heinous that it would take volumes just to highlight them.

Yes, the problem is religion, which as believed, practiced and otherwise lived by billions of people across the world remains bad for humanity, and even worse for the planet. As a newly published study of the effects of religiosity on children makes clear, the more religious their upbringing, the more selfish and mean they are. Of course, it only gets worse as they grow older and have the power to affect the world around them.

But religion is only the beginning, not the end of the problem. How many hundreds of millions of people have been sacrificed and slaughtered in the name of "the fatherland" or the "nation"? No one really knows, because the number is just too big to calculate.

The United States' record in this regard is nothing to be proud of, as in the name of US "exceptionalism" and "values" - read untrammeled capitalism - untold millions have been killed and entire countries laid waste with the full support, it must be noted, of the majority of US citizens. France, the UK, Japan, Russia; who can boast a better record during the heyday of their power?
And these sins are in fact dwarfed by the roughly 150 million people murdered or starved to death thanks to the nationalist and economic fantasies of just three men - Hitler, Stalin, and Mao

As ISIL wages its war against the "the grey zones " where peoples of all faiths interact, coexist and even shape each, its worth noting that its strategy was inspired not by the Quran but instead by George W Bush, whose "you're either with us or against us" threat after 9/11 it directly and approvingly quotes.

So by all means, let us blame Islam for the carnage done in its name. But let's be honest about how much all of our most cherished ideals, identities and ideologies have contributed to the death and destruction piling up around us.

And then, let's figure out how to recapture the sense of justice, mercy and compassion that have always existed - too often in the shadows - at the core of Islam, Judaism, Christianity and many of the world's other great belief systems, before there's nothing left to fight over.

A Professor from University of Abuja delivered a lecture in my school sometimes ago where he told us about the origin of Boko Haram how they started..He said he carried out a thorough research about the evil called bokoharam..

Firstly the word "Boko Haram" was coined by the media "Jama'atu allus sunna Lildaawati wal Jihad" was their real name..I use "was" because the real group have been long hijack by "some powerful force"..The real group was formed by "Mohammed Yusuf" he believe the present Western-style education is mixed with issues that run contrary to their beliefs and that it corrupts their youth..He was extra judicially killed by the police in 2009 which caused the violent protest of his followers during those period..The Prof said with all authority that the then group are not the Demon we know now..That it was since hijack by "Power force" for an agenda..


The Prof linked it to the "CIA" he gave us many examples of how CIA operate and how they use the act of terrorism as a bargaining chip..Many of you don't know that "Osama Bin Laden was once a CIA agent before he turned against and try to expose them he was labelled a terrorist and was accused of the mastermind of 9/11(Thanks to their almighty Media ) later evidences suggest that the 9/11 was an internal operation(Read more about 9/11 conspiracy theory on google)

Secondly the word "Jihad"I think this is the most misunderstood concept to a non muslim.Jihad literally means "to strive".We have different types of jihad The major Jihad is to strive against ones soul as you know human beings are always being tempt by Satan,the act of fighting that inner desire to forbid bad and doing good is the ultimate jihad. The Sword jihad which is the minor jihad one that comes to mind when jihad is mention has a strict condition :

The religious military campaign has to be declared by a proper authority, advised by scholars, who say the religion and people are under threat and violence is imperative to DEFEND them...I repeat only to DEFEND..


Jihad is not a violent concept..Jihad is not a declaration of offensive war against other religions. It is worth noting that the Qur'an specifically refers to Jews and Christians as "people of the book" who should be protected and respected.

Most calls for violent jihad are not sanctioned by Islam...Warfare in the name of God is not Islam..The prophet propagated islam by his impeccable character,humility and sheer morals..He advised us to spread kindness and propagate with our intellect and character not the sword..

Come to think of it..If islam was preached by sword how come we still have billions of muslims and millions joining? If the body can be subdue can you subdue the mind?.God has planned everything in a way that we will will have different religions and you can't force anyone to join your religion..Its only God that guides..


It was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet the scrupulous regard for pledges his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness,his absolute trust in God..

When we say islam is peaceful its an inner feelings we attain by doing GOOD and forbidding BAD..Yes! Islam is Peaceful..Its a feeling only those that have felt will understand.


Its so unfortunate and saddening to read in the news daily how these demons called BOKO haram kill innocent people all in the name of islam..90% of the innocent people they are killing are muslims...

BOKO HARAM are plain terrorist they have nothing to do with islam just as how the KKK are terrorist and have nothing to do with Christianity..I have christain friends and the last thing I will do is to judge Christianity negatively based on their actions..You don't need religion to determine morals if you can't determine right from wrong you lack EMPATHY not religion!!


Physically you know a true muslim by the dark spot on their forehead due to the consistency in performing 5times daily prayer..I doubt if that Ba.stard Shekau pray

A real practising muslim won't tell you Western Education is forbidden when the prophet encouraged us to seek for knowledge even as far as going to china

A real practising muslim will not go to a crowded place and kill innocent people when the Quran says "If someone kill a soul its equivalent to killing mankind and if you save a soul its equivalent to saving mankind" (Holy Qur'an Chapter 5 Verse 32)

A real practising muslim will not force someone to join islam..we propagate with intellect,true nautural facts and morals.
