The pastor called the new workers in the church to fall out and be on a line. They were asked to close their eyes and Pray. The enemy within? Fear of Islam: Britain's new disease

Last week, Martyn Gilleard, a Nazi sympathiser in East Yorkshire, was jailed for 16 years. Police found four nail bombs, bullets, swords, axes and knives in his flat. Gilleard had been preparing for a war against Muslims. In a note at his flat he had written, "I am sick and tired of hearing nationalists talking of killing Muslims, blowing up mosques and fighting back only to see these acts of resistance fail. The time has come to stop the talking and start to act."

The Gilleard case went all but unreported. Had a Muslim been found with an arsenal of weapons and planning violent assaults, it would have been a far bigger story.

There is a reason for this blindness in the media. The systematic demonisation of Muslims has become an important part of the central narrative of the British political and media class; it is so entrenched, so much part of normal discussion, that almost nobody notices. Protests go unheard and unnoticed.

Why? Britain's Muslim immigrants are mainly poor, isolated and alienated from mainstream society. Many are a different colour. As a community, British Muslims are relatively powerless. There are few Muslim MPs, there has never been a Muslim cabinet minister, no mainstream newspaper is owned by a Muslim and, as far as we are aware, only one national newspaper has a regular Muslim columnist on its comment pages, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown of The Independent.

Surveys show Muslims have the highest rate of unemployment, the poorest health, the most disability and fewest educational qualifications of any faith group in the country. This means they are vulnerable, rendering them open to ignorant and hostile commentary from mainstream figures.

Islamophobia – defined in 1997 by the landmark report from the Runnymede Trust as "an outlook or world-view involving an unfounded dread and dislike of Muslims, which results in practices of exclusion and discrimination" – can be encountered in the best circles: among our most famous novelists, among newspaper columnists, and in the Church of England.

Its appeal is wide-ranging. "I am an Islamophobe," the Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee wrote in The Independent nearly 10 years ago. "Islamophobia?" the Sunday Times columnist Rod Liddle asks rhetorically in the title of a recent speech, "Count me in". Imagine Liddle declaring: "Anti-Semitism? Count me in", or Toynbee claiming she was "an anti-Semite and proud of it".

Anti-Semitism is recognised as an evil, noxious creed, and its adherents are barred from mainstream society and respectable organs of opinion. Not so Islamophobia.

Its practitioners say Islamophobia cannot be regarded as the same as anti-Semitism because the former is hatred of an ideology or a religion, not Muslims themselves. This means there is no social, political or cultural protection for Muslims: as far as the British political, media and literary establishment is concerned the normal rules of engagement are suspended.

"There is a definite urge; don't you have it?", the author Martin Amis told Ginny Dougary of The Times: "The Muslim community will have to suffer until it gets its house in order. Not letting them travel. Deportation; further down the road. Curtailing of freedoms. Strip-searching people who look like they're from the Middle East or Pakistan. Discriminatory stuff, until it hurts the whole community and they start getting tough with their children." Here, Amis is doing much more than insulting Muslims. He is using the foul and barbarous language of fascism. Yet his books continue to sell, and his work continues to be celebrated.

And we found the language of Islamophobic columnists such as Toynbee, Liddle, or novelists such as Amis, duplicated by the British National Party and its growing band of supporters.

All over Europe, parties of the far right have been dropping their traditional hostility to minorities such as Jews and homosexuals; in Britain, the BNP has come to realise that anti-Semitism and anti-black campaigning won't work if they are serious about electoral success.

To move to mainstream respectability, they need an issue that allows them to exploit people's fears about immigrants and Britain's ethnic minority communities without being branded racist extremists.

They have found it. Since 9/11, and particularly 7/7, the BNP has gone all out to tap a rich vein of anti-Muslim sentiment. The party's leader, Nick Griffin, has described Islam as a "wicked, vicious faith" and has tried to distance himself and the party from its anti-Semitic past. Party members are now rebuked for discussing the Holocaust and told to focus on terrorism, the evils of Islam, and scare stories of Britain becoming an Islamic state.

Griffin's strategy has been inspired by the press. He said: "We bang on about Islam. Why? Because to the ordinary public out there it's the thing they can understand. It's the thing the newspaper editors sell newspapers with."

Last month, we visited Stoke-on-Trent, a BNP heartland with nine BNP councillors, a council second only to Barking and Dagenham in far-right representation. The party has made this progress in large part by mounting a vicious anti-Muslim campaign. Stoke has one of the lowest employment rates in the country since the pottery industry collapsed. The BNP has tried to link this decline to Muslim immigration.

Other campaigns have focused on planning issues over mosques, a flashpoint elsewhere too. The BNP accuses the Labour council of cutting special deals with Muslim groups in exchange for support. Wherever we explored tension between Muslims and the local community we tended to discover the BNP was present, fanning discontent.

Many categories of immigrants and foreigners have been singled out for hatred and opprobrium by mainstream society because they were felt to be threats to British identity. At times, these despised categories have included Catholics, Jews, French and Germans; gays were held to subvert decency and normality until the 1980s, blacks until the 1970s, and Jews for centuries. Now this outcast role has fallen to Muslims. And it is the perception that Muslims receive special treatment that fuels the most resentment. When we investigated clashes at a Muslim dairy in Windsor, we found the perception that police had failed to investigate what seemed to be a racist attack by Asian youths on a local woman played a powerful role in fanning resentments.

But by the same token we believe that Muslims should be given the same protection as other minority groups from insults or ignorant abuse. This protection is not available. Ordinary Muslim families are virtually a silenced minority.

We should all feel ashamed about the way we treat Muslims, in the media, in our politics, and on our streets. We do not treat Muslims with the tolerance, decency and fairness that we often like to boast is the British way. We urgently need to change our public culture.

Nsofor moves closer to Inter

The agent of Chievo Verona star Obinna Nsofor claims that his client will be playing for Inter Milan next season.

The 21-year-old Nsofor is one of the most highly rated youngsters currently plying his trade in Italy, and the lightning paced striker last season played a key role in Chievo‘s promotion to Serie A.

The Under-23 team star joined Chievo from Enyimba in 2005, but Inter actually helped finance the move, and also partly own a percentage of the player‘s contract.

It has been reported that Inter will sign Nsofor and then immediately hand him over to Roma as part of the Amantino Mancini transfer, but the forward‘s agent Gaetano Paolillo says that this isn‘t the case.

“The Nerazzurri haven‘t spoken to me about the prospect of Victor joining any other team,” he told Centro Suono Sport.

“Last year there was direct contact from Roma to the player, but Chievo put a stop to everything.

“The lad will go to Inter and in my opinion he will stay. There is a chance that he could go to Napoli, but that‘s no more likely than Roma.

“Most likely he will be with the Beneamata. Great teams need great players and I think there will be space for Obinna.”

Nsofor came out in the press earlier this week saying that he would like to play for Napoli

Xenophobia is foreign to me — Mbeki

The attacks on foreign nationals in May this year — which left 62 people dead and thousands displaced — were, rather, the direct result of “naked criminal activity”, Mbeki said.

He was speaking at a tribute to the victims of the xenophobic violence, held at the Pretoria City Hall. It was attended by cabinet ministers, politicians, religious leaders and families of victims.

While Mbeki offered the country’s apologies for the attacks, vowing they would never happen again, he vehemently denied that xenophobia was behind “the dark days of May”.

Referring to his visits to urban and rural areas across the country, Mbeki said it was clear to him that foreigners had been accepted by local communities.

“When I heard some accuse my people of xenophobia, of hatred of foreigners, I wondered what the accusers knew about my people, that I did not know,” he said.

These masses [South Africans] are neither antipathetic towards nor do they hate foreigners.

“And this I must also say: none in our society has any right to encourage or incite xenophobia by trying to explain naked criminal activity by cloaking it in the garb of xenophobia.

To support his assertions, Mbeki said the violence was not targeted at poorer immigrants.

“Those who have eyes to see will have seen that much of the violence we experienced was targeted at the immigrants who had property to loot. Those who have eyes to see will have seen that the majority of the immigrants who live in conditions of poverty, as do many of our people, were not attacked,” he said.

But Mbeki did not mention the attacks on jobless foreigners at the Central Methodist Church in Johannesburg or the necklacing of a Mozambican man in the poor Ramaphosa informal settlement outside Boksburg.

Mbeki, who has been accused of being out of touch before, said there “are some in our country who will charge that what I have said constitutes a denial of our reality”.

Mbeki offered South Africa’s apologies to the rest of the world: “I humbly convey our apology that we allowed criminals in our midst to inflict terrible pain and damage to many in our society.”

Minister of Safety and Security Charles Nqakula said that 21 of the 62 people killed during the attacks were South African.

He said the government’s reintegration plan for those displaced to return to their communities were well under way.

Currently, about 9 000 people are still living at the temporary refugee shelters set up after the attacks. Some 5175 are in the Western Cape and more than 3 000 in Gauteng.

According to Nqakula, some of the bodies found during the attacks had not yet been identified.

Their fingerprints are not on our systems, which means their movement into this country was not documented,” he said.

As part of the government’s plan to deal with the more than 1200 people arrested for xenophobic crimes, special courts were set up in the Western Cape and Gauteng.

Those arrested face charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery, arson and public violence.

Reports of Zambian President's death prove to be exaggerated

President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa would have been an embarrassing corpse. The Zambian leader, who chairs a bloc of southern African nations, collapsed with a stroke on Sunday and was rushed to hospital in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh just as he prepared to confront Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe at an African summit. Mr Mugabe's most vocal opponent on the continent was transferred to a Paris military hospital for further treatment after reportedly suffering a brain haemorrhage. Egyptian doctors said he was in a "semi-coma".

Yesterday morning, a South African radio station reported that the 59-year-old Zambian President had died in Paris, setting radio and television stations buzzing around the world. One Johannesburg newspaper ran the front page headline, "Stroke kills Zambian president".

There was talk of a state funeral being organised within five days. Zambian senior cabinet ministers were reported to be closeted in urgent meetings with army chiefs. Then the South African President, Thabo Mbeki, announced that he had been informed by the executive secretary of the Southern African Development Community that Mr Mwanawasa had passed away. He interrupted a remembrance ceremony held to honour Zimbabwean migrants killed by racist attacks in South Africa to hold a minute's silence. South Africa's main opposition party sent condolences.

But about an hour later, the Zambian Vice-President, Rupiah Banda, already being tipped as the President's successor in the South African media, said rumours of the President's death were greatly exaggerated. "The President had [a] satisfactory night at the Percy military hospital in France. The news reports , are not true."

Zambian President dies in Paris

zambian President, Levy Mwanawasa, died in a Paris hospital on Thursday after suffering a stroke earlier this week, South Africa’s Talk Radio 702 reported, quoting a Zambian High Commission spokesman.

Officials in Lusaka had no immediate comment.

Mwanawasa, 59, was rushed to hospital on Sunday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh after suffering a stroke just before an African Union summit.

He was later transferred to Paris for treatment.

“He passed on this morning,” Malone Zaza, identified as the high commission spokesman, told the radio.

Mwanawasa became Zambia’s vice president in 1991 and succeeded his boss, Frederick Chiluba, in 2001 and won a second term in 2006.

He chaired the Southern African Development Community, which has been mediating between President Robert Mugabe and the opposition to try to end a political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe.

The Zambian leader is a favourite of the International Monetary Fund and other Western donors, who extended billions of dollars in debt relief after he cracked down on government spending and launched an anti-graft drive.

He suffered a mild stroke in 2006 but said before being re-elected that year that he was fit to stand for office.

Reps give condition for airing of BBA-3

The controversy surrounding the airing of the reality TV show, Big Brother Africa, in Nigeria, took a new twist on Thursday as the House of Representatives issued tough conditions to Multichoice on BBA-3.

Its Committee on Information and National Orientation directed the South African company to submit a written undertaking to the National Broadcasting Commission that “nudity, sex, early morning showers and other immoral acts” would not be aired in Nigeria during BBA-3.

Multichoice provides the platform for the transmission of BBA, a production of Nnet Series, to its global audience, especially in Africa.

At a meeting between members of the committee and officials of Multichoice in Abuja, the lawmakers observed that BBA did not promote African values, adding that the title of the show contradicted its content.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Dino Melaye, had insisted that the only condition BBA-3 would be aired in Nigeria was if the programme conformed to the Code of Conduct of the National Broadcasting Commission.

Failure to do so, Melaye warned that the NBC would have no option but to wield the big stick against Multichoice.

The representative of Multichoice in Nigeria, Mr. Collins Cullamo, however, told the committee that though his company aired the show, it merely provided a platform for the producers, Mnet.

According to him, in the contract Multichoice signed with Mnet, both parties agreed that the former would not have editorial control over the content of its programmes.

He said that he had informed the officials of Mnet about the concern of the lawmakers over BBA-3.

The MD stated that they were supposed to be in Abuja on Thursday but had problems with their flight arrangements.
