NIGERIAN MUSIC AWARDS: THE UNTOLD STORY

A week ago, when the first flight, that is, the Soul Train of the Nigerian Music Awards took off at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, NFC ran an interview with Chief Tony Okoroji who claims to own the right to the NMA. Despite all odds the train moved to the Sam Mbakwe International Airport and the first visible thing on arrival at the airport was a branded vehicle with NMA logo and that of Imo State governor, Ikedi Ohakim that confused the first timer at the state capital, whether it was a music award or rally in support of the incumbent governor. Apart from the buses, there were posters and flyers with the same logo. The carnival-like train with over 50 vehicles and two limousines conveyed Nigerian music stars, actors, actresses and Entertainment practitioners, to the Imo Concorde Hotel, where they were received by some government officials including the state Information Commissioner.

Against the promise by the Okoroji-led Tops Event, organisers of the event, many music stars who were given the “treasure box” containing flight, accommodation and feeding tickets, had difficulty securing accommodation at the hotel that was a co-sponsor of the event. As the cloud of the accommodation problem was about to clear, the first event at the Banquet Hall of Concorde Hotel, which is a dinner with the music stars, commenced.

The hall was full to capacity and a lot of music stars had to stand on their feet throughout the duration, even as security operatives and members of the organising committee found it difficult to control the crowd. In the process, many music acts, movie personalities and journalists were rough handled at the entrance as it became an all comer’s affair.A drama which could have caused an uproar if not quickly nipped in the bud was when a member of the organising committee asked veteran juju musician, Pa Fatai Rolling Dollar, to vacate his seat for Ucheria Anunobi, who was late for the event. He was later cautioned by those in the hall.

At the dinner with the stars, veteran musician like Sir Don Obonu, Sir Douglas Oriche, Ikenga Super Stars and Chief Okonkwo performed. The event which was supposed to be a night of music and dinner turned out to be one of praise singing and homage paying to the governor of Imo State. It became so boring to the extent that many stars abandoned the cold dinner as time was fast running out.

The planned trip to some tourist centres like Oguta Lake was cancelled for poor organisation and worse still, those who came to Owerri on the second day were also busy looking for accommodation.Saturday, the awards day, was worse as the Arcade near the Imo Concorde Hotel became an all comer’s affair. There were lots of security lapses as music stars and actors found it difficult to gain access to the Balmoral Tent, where the event took place, while petty thieves and hoodlum had a field day picking pockets and stealing valuables. Yours truly lost a valuable wrist watch in the process.

During the awards proper which was devoid of the razzmatazz and hype given it, from the comedian to the organisers and award presenters, it was praise singing galore for Ohakim, who was grining and whispering to his wife all through, while music interlude provided by Geterman, Mamuze and Sammy Okposo was drab.Although Djinee won the Best Voice Male; Lara George, Best Voice Female; Tuface, Best R&B; X-Project, Best Hip Hop Song; Ruggedman, Best Rap Artiste; Best Highlife, Sony Bobo; Best Fuji, Dekunle Fuji; Best Raggae, Faze; Timaya, Dance Hall Song; Gospel Tradition, Nwockocha; Gospel Contemporary, Sammy Okposo; 9ice, New Musician Male; TY-Bello, Best New Artiste Female, Record of the Year, P-Square; Song of the Year, Olu Maintain, P-Square also clinched the Artiste of the Year award. Those recognised were Oliver de Coque, Ken Calebs Olumese, Pa Fatai Rolling Dollar and Bongos Ikwe, while Sir Warrior won the Post Humous Award.

Some of the flaws in the awards is in the area of organisation, planning and presentation, as movie stars were given prominence than their counterparts in music circle, even as some of them who were supposed to dress glamorously were not properly dressed. When the event ended at about 2.30 a.m., it was good riddance to bad rubbish!

The Funeral prayer

The performance of the funeral prayer over a Muslim, known in Arabic as Salaat-ul Janaazah, is a communal obligation - Fard Kifaayah. If someone is buried without it being performed, the whole community incurs a sin for not having fulfilled this obligation. A child born dead or aborted dead after four month, or one that dies before puberty, does not have to have a funeral prayer. This is in light with the hadith of Aishah who said: "The Prophet's son Ibraaheem died when he was eighteen months old, and the Prophet (s.a.w) did not make (funeral) salaat for him." Although it is not obligatory in this case, it is still recommended as it was done by the Prophet (s.a.w) on other occasions. Likewise in the case of those killed on the battlefield, such individuals may be buried without the performance of Salat-ul Janazaah, as was the case with the martyrs of the battle of Uhud. However, the funeral prayer may be performed for martyrs, given that the Prophet (s.a.w) did perform it over those who died in battle on other occasions. The funeral prayer should also be held for those known to be corrupt, such as drug addicts, alcoholics, adulterers, and the like. In their case it is preferred that the scholars and the pious not take part in the funeral prayer as a punishment for them and deterrent for others like them. It was the practice of the Prophet (s.a.w) not to pray for those who committed major sins, allowing others to partake in it.

It is preferable to pray the funeral prayer outside of the mosque, in a place designated for that, known as the Musallah. This was the most common practice of the Prophet (s.a.w). The funeral prayer may be carried out in the mosque, however praying it outside the mosque was the predominant practice of the Prophet (s.a.w). It is permissible to pray Janaazah (but not other prayers) in a graveyard, either away from the graves, or in an area designated for that. It is also permissible to perform the funeral prayer over a grave, after burial, in two situations: If the dead person was buried before performing the prayer; or if he was buried before giving chance to the Muslims to perform the prayer. This was done by the Prophet (s.a.w) over a black woman who used to clean the mosque.

The reward and benefits for offering the funeral prayer is very great for both the deceased and the one who performs it. Allah's Messenger (s.a.w) said: "Whoever follows a funeral procession and offers the prayer for the deceased, will gain one Qeeraat of reward. And whoever follows it and remains with it until the body is buried, will get two Qeeraats of reward, the least of which is equal in weight to Mount Uhud." And he (s.a.w) also said: "Whenever a Muslim man dies, and forty men pray over his janaazah, none of them joining anything with Allah in worship, Allah grants them intercession for him." The only way the Prophet (s.a.w) and his companions offered the funeral prayer was in congregation. It is preferable that those behind the Imaam form at least three rows, even though the rows may not be complete, as this is the Sunnah. The Imaam should stand facing the Qiblah behind the head of the dead man and behind the middle of the dead woman.

The Imaam begins the prayer with takbir. It is possible to do either four, five, six, seven, or even nine takbirs, as all of them have been recorded in authentic hadiths and acts of the companions. With the uttering of takbir, it is permissible to either raise one hands with each takbir, or to do so only for the first takbir based on different sound narrations. After each takbir, the hands should be placed on the chest, as one would do in regular prayer. After the first takbir, Surat al-Faatihah should be recited. It is also permissible to recite another small chapter after it. The recitation should be done in a quiet voice. After the second takbir, the prayer for the Prophet (s.a.w) should be made, similar to that said before one ends their salaat. After each of the remaining two or more takbirs, sincere prayers (du'a) should be made for the dead and their relatives. There are different invocations narrated by the Prophet (s.a.w) found in books of supplication one can choose from to say. After the final takbir comes the tasleem - giving greetings of salaam, as one does in regular prayer (salaat) to conclude their prayer. One may do so by making tasleem to both the right and left sides, or the right side only, as both have been authentically transmitted.

If a Muslim dies in a land where there are no Muslims to pray the funeral prayer over him, then in this case it is permissible to perform the prayer for him in another land. This is known as salat-ul Ghaa-ib - The prayer of an absent person. This is what the Prophet (s.a.w) did when news reached him about the death of an-Najaashi, the ruler of Abyssinia at that time, and a Muslim who concealed his faith. Some scholars took this action of the Prophet (s.a.w) as a sunnah and permission for Muslims to pray for everyone who dies afar. This is the opinion of Shafi and Ahmad. Other scholars took this incident as a special case only applicable to the Prophet (s.a.w) and no one else. This is the opinion of Abu Hanifah and Maalik. The correct opinion and Allah knows best, is that if the funeral prayer was not performed in the land where the person died, it is permissible to pray salat-ul Ghaib. The Prophet (s.a.w) prayed for an-Najaashi because it is appears that the prayer was not performed for him, given that he died amongst the disbelievers.

Praying at graves and the conditions of intercession

I was in a converstation with a follower of the sufi way of islam and that person asked me what did i think about praying at the graves, or about religious scholars interceding during the day of judgement. i told that person that praying to someones grave is shirk and no one can interceed except the prophet. and i wanted to know what was the ruling of the people of knowledge on this matter and where can i look for proof ?

In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother in Islam, thank you very much for having confidence in us, and we hope our efforts, which are purely for Allah’s Sake, meet your expectations.

Islam, indeed, is the religion of easiness. A Muslim is allowed to perform prayer in a Church if he is forced to pray there. If a Muslim prays in a Church without necessity his prayer is valid but still it is reprehensible or Makrooh. Whenever the necessity warrants a Muslim to perform prayer in a Church, he should obtain the prior permission of the Church authorities as Islam respects other people’s places of worship.

Tackling the issue from a broader perspective, the eminent Muslim scholar, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, states the following:

“The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said: “I have been given five things that no one has been given before me. (Among them is that) the earth has been made for me as a Mosque and a source of purification. So if any man from my nation realizes that he has to pray, then he may pray.”

It is clear form the aforementioned Prophetic Hadith that the whole earth is considered as a Mosque for Muslims and a place for performing Salah and prostration.

However, it is better for one to stay away from those places (such as a Church or a Synagogue) out of fear of doubtful matters. If one finds it extremely difficult to find a place to perform prayer except for a Church or a Synagogue, and he performs Salah in them then one’s prayer is valid as the whole earth is for Allah and all of it is considered a Mosque (i.e. meaning a place to perform prayer and to prostrate) for all Muslims. It is reported that `Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, refused to pray inside the Church and he prayed outside it in order to ward off any false notions that may occur to the minds of ordinary Muslims who may be enticed to pray at the exact place where `Umar performed prayer (i.e. inside the Church)”

Tackling the issue from another perspective, Dr. `Abdul-Fattah Idrees, professor of Comparative Jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University adds:

“A travelling Muslim may be allowed to perform prayer in a Church if he failed to recognize a nearby Mosque on his way. It is not necessary that a Muslim who does not know the Mosque to perform prayer in a Church as there are many other places to perform prayer.

The reason why it is not recommended for a Muslim to pray in a Church is that a Muslim praying there may be distracted during performing prayer by the crosses, statues as well other Christian symbols drawn on the wall of the Church.”

Dr. Muzzamil Siddiqi, former president of the Islamic Soceity of North America (ISNA), concludes:

It is permissible to pray in any place, as long the place is clean (tahir). However, praying in a Church, temple or any other religious place without any necessity is Makrooh.

It is possible that some people of those religions may not like to see us praying in their places of worship and we should not hurt other people’s feelings. If we have to pray in those places then we should take proper permission from the authorities that govern those sanctuaries.”

Allah Almighty knows best.

Question:
Many religions exist in this world, and I assume that all of the people having a religion, worship their own religion as 'the truth'. So do Muslims, and I respect them for that. When someone is absolutely convinced of the truth, he will try to convince other people of that truth.
My question is how far must and may someone, in this case a Muslim, go, in trying to convince a non-Muslim of his truth. Don't Muslims have to respect others to have an own thought of what the truth is? Or respect that someone simply doesn't know and cannot be convinced by others' 'versions' of the truth?
You can answer by argueing that the Quran, which tells according to you the truth, tell you do convince others, but that argument doesn't hold for a non-Muslim, because for him the Quran is not the truth. Do you understand my point?

Answer:

Islam's view of other religions is balanced, realistic and moderate. Islam doesn't view other religions as being either completely true nor completely false, but believes that all true religions were at one time divinely revealed. However, over time the teachings of the various religions, due to a variety of reasons, have become distorted and mixed with made-man ideas. But nonetheless, Muslims are required to be tolerant of other revealed religions since the Qur'an clearly says: "Let there be no compulsion in religion".

Khadijah 'Sue' Watson - Former pastor, missionary, professor. Master's degree in Divinity
"What happened to you?" This was usually the first reaction I encountered when my former classmates, friends and co-pastors saw me after having embraced Islam. I suppose I couldn't blame them, I was a highly unlikely the person to change religions. Formerly, I was a professor, pastor, church planter and missionary. If anyone was a radical fundamentalist it was I.

I had just graduated with my Master's Degree of Divinity from an elite seminary five months before. It was after that time I met a lady who had worked in Saudi Arabia and had embraced Islam. Of course I asked her about the treatment of women in Islam. I was shocked at her answer, it wasn't what I expected so I proceeded to ask other questions relating to Allah and Muhammad (pbuh). She informed me that she would take me to the Islamic Center where they would be better able to answer my questions.

Being prayed up, meaning-asking Jesus for protection against demon spirits seeing that what we had been taught about Islam is that it is Demonic and Satanic religion. Having taught Evangelism I was quite shocked at their approach, it wa s direct and straightforward. No intimidation, no harassment, no psychological manipulation, no subliminal influence! None of this, "let's have a Qur'aanic study in your house", like a counter part of the Bible study. I couldn't believe it! They gave me some books and told me if I had some questions they were available to answer them in the office. That night I read all of the books they gave. It was the first time I had ever read a book about Islam written by a Muslim, we had studied and read books about Islam only written by Christians. The next day I spent three hours at the office asking questions. This went on everyday for a week, by which time I had read twelve books and knew why Muslims are the hardest people in the world to conver t to Christianity. Why? Because there is nothing to offer them!! (In Islam) There is a relationship with Allah, forgiveness of sins, salvation and promise of Eternal Life.

Naturally, my first question centered on the deity of Allah. Who is this Allah that the Muslims worship? We had been taught as Christians that this is another god, a false god. When in fact He is the Omniscient-All Know ing, Omnipotent-All Powerful, and Omnipresent-All Present God. The One and Only without co-partners or co-equal. It is interesting to note that there were bishops during the first three hundred years of the Church that were teaching as the Muslim believes that Jesus (pbuh) was a prophet and teacher!! It was only after the conversion of Emperor Constantine that he was the one to call and introduce the doctrine of the Trinity. He a convert to Christianity who knew nothing of this religion introduced a paganistic concept that goes back to Babylonian times. Because the space does not permit me to go into detail about the subject insha'Allah, another time. Only I must point out that the word TRINITY is not found in the Bible in any of its many translation nor is it found in the original Greek or Hebrew languages!

My other important question centered on Muhammad (pbuh). Who is this Muhammad? I found out that Muslims do not pray to him like the Christians pray to Jesus. He is not an intermediary and in fact it is forbidden to pray to him. We ask blessing upon him at the end of our prayer but likewise we ask blessings on Abraham. He is a Prophet and a Messenger, the final and last Prophet. In fact, until now, one thousand four hundred and eighteen years (1,418) later there has been no prophet after him. His message is for All Mankind as opposed to the message of Jesus or Moses (peace be upon them both) which was sent to the Jews. "Hear O Israel" But the message is the same message of Allah. "The Lord Your God is One God and you shall have no other gods before Me."(Mark 12:29).

Because prayer was a very important part of my Christian life I was both interested and curious to know what the Muslims were praying. As Christians we were as ignorant on this aspect of Muslim belief as on the other aspects. We thought and were taught, that the Muslims were bowing down to the Ka'bah (in Mecca), that that was there god and center point of this false deity. Again, I was shocked to learn that the manner of prayer is prescribed by God, Himself. The words of the prayer are one of praise and exaltation. The approach to prayer (ablution or washing) in cleanliness is under the direction of Allah. He is a Holy God and it is not for us to approach Him in an arbitrary manner but only reasonable that He should tell us how we should approach Him.

At the end of that week after having spent eight (cool years of formal theological studies I knew cognitively (head knowledge) that Islam was true. But I did not embrace Islam at that time because I did not believe it in my heart. I continued to pray, to read the Bible, to attend lectures at the Islamic Center. I was in earnest asking and seeking God's direction. It is not easy to change your religion. I did not want to loose my salvation if there was salvation to loose. I continued to be shocked and amazed at what I was learning because it was not what I was taught that Islam believed. In my Master's level, the professor I had was respected as an authority on Islam yet his teaching and that of Christianity in general is full of Misunderstanding. He and many Christians like him are sincere but they are sincerely wrong.

Two months later after having once again prayed seeking God's direction, I felt something drop into my being! I sat up, and it was the first time I was to use the name of Allah, and I said, "Allah, I believe you are the One and Only True God." There was peace that descended upon me and from that day four years ago until now I have never regretted embracing Islam. This decision did not come without trial. I was fired from my job as I was teaching in two Bible Colleges at that time , ostracized by my former classmates, professors and co-pastors, disowned by my husband's family, misunderstood by my adult children and made a suspicion by my own government. Without the faith that enables man to stand up to Satanic forces I would not ha ve been able to withstand all of this. I am ever so grateful to Allah that I am a Muslim and may I live and die a Muslim.

"Truly, my prayer, my service of sacrifice, my life and my death are all for God the Cherisher of the Worlds. No partner has He, this I am commanded. And I am the first of those who bow to Allah in Islam."

(Holy Qur'aan 6:162-163)

Soldiers’ riot is dangerous
By Adebolu Arowolo

Whether in peacetime or war situation, a nation’s army has an important role to play. A nation is only so in name and can be annexed or wiped off the world map if it cannot defend itself against external aggression or internal insurgency and implosion. It is therefore not surprising that the most important assignment given to the Nigerian military by the 1999 Constitution is that of “defending Nigeria from external aggression.” The armed forces are also expected to maintain the nation’s territorial integrity and secure its borders from violation on land, sea or air. The military is the main apparatus of coercion relied upon by the President to suppress insurrection or rebellion. The military is the backbone of the political power exercised by the Commander-in-Chief.

There are well-founded fears, however, that the nation’s Army is being assailed and crippled by payroll fraud and other forms of official graft. With the rapid evaporation of esprit de corps and group loyalty, there are indications that the army’s combat readiness may have been stymied by rampant venality. Such sad signals came very early in the life of this administration.

I remember how a military attaché to the Nigerian embassy in India was caught with $2m cash in his briefcase in May 2007. The Indian Income Tax officials who arrested him as he was preparing to board an early morning flight from New Delhi to Lagos said the Defense Advisor, Captain G.A. Ojedokun, could not explain the source of the huge cash found on him. The money was seized and the Nigerian diplomat was released after being accused of money laundering. Many international newspapers reported the case and that further tarred the nation’s image.

I recall that President Umaru Yar’Adua ordered an immediate probe of the scandal. But more than one year after the case came to public knowledge, the official has not been brought to justice. He may never be given the opportunity to clear his name as the government makes feeble attempts to deal with scores of more egregious cases of flagrant abuse of public office in the military and elsewhere.

Only last week, soldiers in Owena Barracks of the 323 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army went on rampage. Hundreds of soldiers chanting abusive songs against their superior officers trooped out of their barracks to protest alleged illegal deductions from their peacekeeping allowances. The demonstration was so violent that the soldiers set fires on the road with disused tires, preventing motorists from moving in and out of Akure for several hours. Reports said they later took the demonstration back to the barracks, where the Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. Gabriel Omelo and other senior officers, were held hostage by the irate soldiers.

For many months and in most of the barracks across the nation, soldiers have been complaining about being shortchanged by the military authorities in the payment of peacekeeping allowances. Soldiers who have gone on peacekeeping operations allege that the United Nations and the African Union pay $600 and $400 respectively per month to every soldier on peace mission. But the Army authorities have illegally reduced the pay to $150 and $100 for UN and AU operations respectively. If this allegation is true, it means every soldier on UN peacekeeping operation loses $450 dollars monthly, while the one on AU mission loses $300 monthly.

When the military authorities started this expensive prank, they said the deductions were being saved and that the balance would be fully paid upon the peacekeeper’s return to the country. Now many batches of soldiers have returned to Nigeria from peace-keeping operations, only to discover that they may have been ripped off by their bosses.

Recently, 46 peacekeepers who had just returned from Sudan perished in a road crash. Questions have been raised as to why those soldiers were made to travel on road when they could have traveled by air. Have their relations been paid their full peacekeeping allowances and other terminal benefits? Has the Defense Ministry investigated the possibility of sabotage in the road crash? Was the crash connected with any plan to embezzle the allowances of the deceased officers?

The Nigerian soldier is enduring a lot of privation and oppression. We are all familiar with the agony of military pensioners whose terminal allowances have been mismanaged or stolen. Many retired soldiers have died in misery as a few officers enrich themselves with the terminal benefits of others. Soldiers live in dilapidated and decrepit barracks. From their meager salary, soldiers buy their own uniform and boots. Apart from the mindless looting of peacekeepers’ allowances, salaries are now being stolen by military pen robbers.

Many have not forgotten the Rukuba Barracks showdown early this year, when disgruntled soldiers protesting the non-implementation of a government-approved salary scale booed the Chief of Army Staff. There was also a major breakdown of military discipline at the Ojo Cantonment in Lagos, when the former Director of Administration and Finance, Gen. O. Lartey’s speech was openly jeered and sneered at. The failure by the army authorities to implement the new minimum wage and for which N100bn had been set aside by the government in 2007, became a major embarrassment early in the year when a group of serving majors wrote the President complaining about how “thieving Generals” were “stealing our salaries and allowances.”

After mismanaging the Army’s finances without any repercussion, the rapacious officers descended on the armoury and looted it. The nation suddenly woke up to discover that some top shots in the Army had been making their millions by selling the nation’s weapons to the militants in the Niger Delta.

In the hands of those who control it, the Nigerian State remains a potent tool for acquiring obscene wealth. The Army is not different from other institutions that have been raped and crippled by those who control them. We may never get to the root of the rampant corruption in the army and the culprits may go unpunished because of the thick cloud of secrecy that envelops its administrative and financial operations. Open and comprehensive investigations are never allowed for “security reasons.”

When the reports on illegal sale of the nation’s arms and ammunition became public knowledge many months ago, I did not expect that anybody would be punished. And so far, I have not been disappointed. The leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, Henry Okah, is being tried secretly for gun running and other offences because the government feels that an open trial might expose ‘the big men’ and top brass of the military who transacted the illicit deal with Okah. I think the morally bankrupt politician is also afraid that any comprehensive probe of the Army may provoke a coup. With the riot in Akure, the decay in the Army has reached a dangerous level. I hope President Yar’Adua will see the need for urgent action

Nollywood Star's Quest for TV Fame

Hollywood, CA, July 02, 2008 | SHOOT Publicity Wire | --- When beautiful Nigerian actress/singer and model Dakore Egbuson chose to shoot the pilot for her celebrity 'reality' chat show as well as her first music video, "Don't Make Me" in Hollywood, there was one company she trusted to handle all of the creative demands each project required: the award-winning Walker Fitzgibbon TV & Film Productions, spearheaded by executive producer-director Mo Fitzgibbon and her partner, writer-director Robert W. Walker.

Walker and Fitzgibbon, joined by their co-producers Fernando Viquez and Deb Snyder, simultaneously shot and generated a sexy and fun filled talk show and music video capitalizing on Dakore's charming personality by creating multiple segments including: news, celebrity interview, fashion and beauty, fine dining and a full performance of Dakore with an R&B house band. The Dakore Show premise centers on traveling to the most glamorous and entertaining cities in the world and discovering true wealth. Anchored in Nigeria and Los Angeles, there is no doubt that the Dakore Show will inspire and entertain! "Inspirtainment!" is the show's concept coined by Dakore and her producing partner O. Lou Akande,

To attain their infamous cutting edge style, Walker Fitzgibbon utilized 3 HD cameras to capture Dakore in multiple set ups including: special effect green screen, camera car driving, and life style scenes in Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

According to Fitzgibbon, "This production really let us fly. Anything we envisioned, Dakore could handle, being an extremely talented actor and singer. We converted the Aqua Lounge in Beverly Hills into our talk show/performance sets. All the sets were uniquely designed using aquatic marine elements, to draw parallels to Dakore's culture."

Dakore's music video "Don't Make Me" is slated to be released, worldwide, in early fall to MTV BASE (Africa), United Kingdom, and BET (US).
